Alridge, Bridges Among Redskins' Cuts (Updated)

The Redskins have just released their 53-man roster and the following players have been cut:

Robbie Agnone; Anthony Alridge; Jeremy Bridges; Scott Burley; Alex Buzbee; Chase Daniel; Antonio Dixon; Dominique Dorsey; Doug Dutch; Keith Eloi, Cody Glenn, D.J. Hackett, Lendy Holmes; Rob Jackson; Dave Rayner; Rueben Riley; Trent Shelton; J.D. Skolnitsky; Robert Thomas; Eddie Williams; Darrel Young.

...

Rick Maese, who tweeted the cuts, also tweeted updates from Vinny Cerrato's press conference: Colt Brennan has a partially torn hamstring and torn labrum in left hip (he'd had a torn labrum repaired in his right hip in 2008); kickers were pretty even, so they went with the known quantity; and Marko Mitchell was "like Chris Horton last year... To me, that one was pretty obvious," Cerrato said.

Eloi reacted via Twitter: "I have been put on waivers, lots of talent, just need another shot!!"

...

Some of these guys may be back when the practice squad is announced tomorrow. Shelton tweeted: "signing back tomorrow so still in dc"

These guys are on the waiver wire for 24 hours, then they can be signed to practice squad. Tune in tomorrow evening to see who has been signed to ps.

Seems solid to me! Looks like Henson beat out Thomas at LB. Hopefully, Dixon, Glenn, Jackson and Eddie Williams make it to the practice squad.

Wouldn't be surprised if there are not a few more changes, especially if someone they like is cut from another team. As for Bridges I guess he didn't play well enough or has less up side then some of the others.

So they're keeping Wynn over Buzbee and Jackson. I am sure that Wynn is better today than either of those two, but I hate to see them not developing players.

Byron Westbrook made it. Six CBs.

Posted by: skinfanman | September 5, 2009 6:17 PM | Report abuse

21 FOREVER:

BRIDGES just didn't play well. As I stated many times here, he was whiffing on run blocks and couldn't handle corner rushers.

The only two surprises for me were that WESTBROOK did make it, and R. THOMAS didn't. That was a surprise, even more than WESTBROOK. Other-wise I was happy with the selections with one caveat, SUISHAM should not have made this team, but neither should RAYNOR. The REDSKINS need a kicker two notches above either.

Wow cutting Jeremy Bridges over BMW....odd. I thought Bridges was going to be a key back up.

I just don't get the angst over Aldridge. Its not like he is leon washington or d sproles. He couldn't hold on to the ball. Nuff said.

Siked about Mason, Mitchell, Will Montgomery,

Wynn is such a waste, would much rather have kept Jackson.

Aldridge gone and Mason stays...as predicted by yours truly the day after the Jax game. I posted then that you can teach "to chip, or not to chip"...but AA had several fumbles both early and late in the preseason. Speed kills, but fumbling kills faster.

Ball security is paramount in the NFL...and is even more emphasized by Zorn et al. See JC refusing to throw picks at the cost of risky high upside throws a la...wait for it...Cutler.

I hope Alridge will be called back in the 53 man roster during the season to make him unclaimable.

The Bridge's cut makes absolutely no sense to me at all... but guess they like the potential in Williams... so O-line depth is Montgomery, M Williams, E Williams & who??

Definitely had to take Marcus Mason over Aldridge simply out of principle... can't have a guy go out & put your team down 10-0 like he did & get away with it when the other guy had another strong camp. That would send the wrong message.

Bridges' failure to make the team is a real shame. He must have really played poorly and lost the confidence of the coaches, because with his ability to play Tackle and Guard - on paper he seemed very valuable.

But if the coaches think he can't play..., then I guess he had to go.

glenn, jackson, bridges, and williams (the FB, not the C) a little surprising

seems like they want to give Colt a chance to heal up and try again next year.

Posted by: pabrian2003 | September 5, 2009 6:38 PM | Report abuse

how they let a speedy runner like aldridge go?

Okay if we must: Tryon has had problems covering passers but this would mean that HE PLAYS WELL on special teams? He can tackle. Alridge cannot. You need someone who can block and tackle not just run back kicks. We have already seen that Devin Thomas can do this as well.

As does Byron Westbrook.

They need cornerbacks. That position is now an area of critical need. Thanks to poor foresight on the part of Danny in releasing Shawn Springs and before that, chasing 1st round draft pick Champ Bailey out-of-town. Great job Snidely, you've done it again!

Posted by: periculum | September 5, 2009 6:39 PM | Report abuse

I guess our backup left tackle is our starting right tackle, and if Heyer goes down it's fat Mike Williams protecting our QB at right tackle. It might be a nice story, but that guy does not belong on an NFL field right now.

Of course it'll be Jason Campbell's fault when this creaky old bunch disintegrates at mid-season like last year.

The front office is a joke. They have no idea what they're doing.

Prove me wrong, go out and get a vet (or two) to provide some depth.

Posted by: mcasady | September 5, 2009 6:39 PM | Report abuse

Not to upset with these cuts... woulda liked to see antonio dixon make the team but thats a tough task on this team...

Woulda also liked to see bridges kept. Don't get the logic behind cutting the only real backup lineman with experience, but then again he never looked real good... gotta be a good sign for rinehart.

Never was a huge fan of alridge or dorsey, one will likely be back on the ps... and likely have a chance next year but as much as I do not like Betts... I'm happy we didn't keep either of these guys...

Other than that, not bad. Expected most of it not all but not unhappy with it... Good for Mason kid deserved it.

@Rachel216,

Betts does indeed play well on special teams. That is why he is there and Alridge is not. If Alridge wants the job, (and Mason), and they don't want to be cut or relegated to inactive they need to learn all aspects of the game. Not just one.

I remember Truth. Is he not around anymore? Maybe he's busy crying right now? Oh well, I may be crying later tonight too. Va Tech's QB looks fast & the Tide may have a hard time keeping him in check, but we'll see.

why stress over this? this team's gonna be somewhere around 6--10 to 9--7 best case.......when in doubt--throw the old f@&kers out......honestly if they coulda fig'd a way to trade a package of Betts\ARE\Cartright all together for a 3rd or a 4rth woulda been huge for future of team.these guys are average and on back side of their very average careers........

8--8 again is what I see..............

Anyone saying that cutting Alridge was a mistake does not understand how football works. Alridge is nothing more than a glorified speed back. The kid can run but he struggles elsewhere... mainly pass blocking (A KEY ELEMENT TO A RB'S GAME)... Mason struggles there as well whereas both Betts and Portis EXCELL in that area.

Mason was the better player than Alridge and Betts is a better player than he is as well. Hopefully we can get Alridge back onto the ps so he can learn and develop a little more but right now he was not nearly good enough to make this team.

Best bets for practice squad

Williams
Daniel
Shelton
Alridge
Burley
Dutch
Young

ryanohalloranCerrato: The #Redskins have invited 10 players back tomorrow for the eight practice squad spots, but they will look at the waiver wire.

Why invite 10 if you can only keep 8? Sounds odd. Probables to come back tomorrow:
RedskinsDotComJust guessing here: Practice squad candidates include Alridge, Daniel, Dixon, Dorsey, Eloi, Glenn, Holmes, Jackson, Shelton, Eddie Williams

Posted by: will_ga | September 5, 2009 6:51 PM | Report abuse

I assume Alridge fumbled too many times ;-

Mitchell was a no-brainer to make the roster. He might be the second best WR on the team already. I'd like to see him as the starting split-end; with Moss as the slot receiver and Kelly as the flanker....

I was surprised Batiste make it over Bridges. I guess he's a better backup OT and special team player. Glad to see Montgomery and Williams made the squad. Much better OL depth vs last year. I bet M Williams will be inactive for a few weeks until he regains his quickness...

Henson, Glenn, and Thomas must have been competing for a single LB spot after the emergence of Orakpo and Wilson. We could see Glenn back on the practice squad.

Jarmon is certainly an upgrade as a backup DE over Buzbee and Jackson. I think the Skins can still bring Jackson back on the practice squad after he clears waivers.

Apple IIC, Apple IIC? You're joshing me? You are trying to do this with a 6502 eight bit / kind of 16 bit processor with a very limited amount of memory ... okay so a lot is written in assembly so it is far more efficient that sluggish brain-damaged windoze?

Still, wow!

Still wish for Hanley Ramirez -> Nats in a trade.

i think the practice squad is going to have a lot of guys who will actually make the team next year as they are basically reshirted this year because there are going to be a decent number a guys on the roster this year that are going to be let go after this season such as:

Rabach, Thomas, Wynn, Daniels, Griffin, and sellers

and guys such as smoot and london aren't getting younger so you never know

In case you forgot. Snyder didn't chase Bailey out of town. He was traded for Portis. I agree though that letting Springs go even if he was often injured was a mistake as he was our best corner.

By Jason Reid | September 5, 2009; 6:02 PM ET

Ok, may the cuts belong the Redskins!

The thing that is funny....How do any of you know better than the coaching staff that see guys compete everyday...run the same plays 100 times a week and watch film and watch how the guys conduct themselves as well as study habits...how well they know the playbook etc etc etc....

how do you know better? sitting at home watching a few plays in preseason games?

You don't that's the fact...lol

i think the coaching staff and ALL involved who know the players and see them everyday working....well They know more than me!

I'm not sure how many fools and friend of fools one must deal with but .. YOU KNUCLEHEAD Bailey wanted to LEAVE. Gibbs gave him that option, leave or play for him. Bailey decided that he preferred NOT TO HAVE ANYTHING FURTHER TO DO WITH SNYDER! They would not give up the best corner back in the NFL for Clinton Portis! It was not and is not the SAME VALUE!

But at least they came away with something. Thanks to Gibbs NOT Snidely Owl.

Congrats to long shot FA Edwin Williams and T Mike Williams.

I really feel bad for, Antonio Dixon I hope he make the Practice squad, as well as Scott Burley.

And I cant figure out why Justin Tyron, is on this team, and Jeremy Bridges isn't.

But then, I cant figure out how or why Snyder still owns this team.

Posted by: dashriprock | September 5, 2009 7:40 PM | Report abuse

My little team is growing up. I didn't think they would man up and admit Bridges was a mistake. Then, letting go two draft picks from this year... I'm getting all choked up. Vinny can finally admit he was wrong.

I'm hoping Robbie Agnone makes the practice squad. I think he did enough to get consideration. I expect Young, Eloi, Dixon and Aldridge will be placed on the practice squad as well. Daniel is the unknown commodity here. I don't see that it serves much purpose to have another QB on the practice squad... unless you are pretty sure he won't sign with another team and unless you're planning on keeping only two QB's on the roster.
