Alridge Returns, Hopes Fumbles Do Not

It was a great week for running back Anthony Alridge, whom the Redskins re-signed from the Houston Texans' practice squad on Tuesday.

Alridge failed to make the opening 53-man roster, in large part, because of his fumbling problems, but Washington brought him back when a roster spot opened because right guard Randy Thomas was lost for the season with a triceps injury. The coaches still are eager to see if the speedy Alridge (he has been clocked at 4.36 in the 40-yard dash) can provide the change of pace they are eager to have in the running game.

With top back Clinton Portis possibly slowed because of bone spurs, Alridge could get some chances to carry the ball against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. After practice on Friday, Coach Jim Zorn would not commit to Alridge being active against the Lions, but Alridge was told he would play.

"I'm looking forward to my opportunity," Alridge said Friday. "I can't wait to get out there on the field and just show everybody what I'm capable of. I just want to be out there and know my assignments, do my assignments, and help the team get a win."

In a highly unusual move, the Redskins are carrying five running backs on the roster: Portis, Alridge, Ladell Betts, Marcus Mason and Rock Cartwright. Portis, Betts, Mason and Cartwright are considered tackle-to-tackle guys. Alridge is the only member of the group with home-run potential, and he moved ahead of Mason and Cartwright as soon as he was re-signed.

Although Betts began the season as the third-down back, I don't think his grip on that role is as strong as it was before the opener. He has a 2.0-yard average on only six rushes and 48 yards on two receptions.

Alridge would have to dazzle the coaches to take opportunities from Betts, but he has the type of big-play speed the Redskins want to have on the field. Portis's situation also could have an effect on how much Alridge is in the mix against the Lions and moving forward this season.

If Portis's supposedly sore ankles prove to be a lingering problem, many things could change in the running game. Foremost for Alridge, though, is that he must show he can hold onto the ball.

"Definitely, you got to take care of the ball," he said. "I remember everything about the offense, just certain things have to come back to me, but the main thing if have to do is just hang onto the ball.

"I know if they put me in there, I'm going to know what they need me to do. They just told me to be ready, stay by the coaches, and when it's my time, it's my time to get out there and show them what I can do."

Do you thing double A. No doubt you need to hold onto the ball or it will be a short life for you in the NLF.

Jason, I am glad you are able to write about your boy playing tomorrow. Congrats to you for not writing about Marcus in this piece... I know it was hard to not throw a grab at Mason for one tread. But the night is not over.....

It goes against the power-running ethic that has long been a staple in Washington, but the Redskins' best strategy in this game may be to spread the field and go after the lower defensive backs on Detroit's depth chart. Last year, only New Orleans and the New York Giants had a higher offensive DVOA than Washington with four or more wide receivers on the field, while Detroit was the league's worst defense against four-wide formations.

If the Redskins do spread the field, look for short passes with yards after the catch. The 2008 Lions gave up an average of 6.1 yards after catch, the highest figure in the league. The 2008 Redskins' offense averaged 5.4 yards after catch (sixth in the NFL).

The New Orleans Saints have been carrying only two quarterbacks this year, with receiver Lance Moore serving as the emergency quarterback behind Drew Brees and Mark Brunell.

But Moore won't play Sunday, due to a strained hamstring.

So Chase Daniel, the former Missouri standout, has been elevated from the practice squad for Sunday's game at Buffalo, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Chris Meidt is that person. Based on how he coached in college (albeit, small school, St. Olaf College) not sure why Zorn calls plays so conservatively.

To me we should not have five RB. This is part of Zorn's problem- indecisiveness. Zorn refusing to name the starting WRs in preseason and giving JC and the starting WR more time to work together in the preseason games and his delay in naming Rhino the starting RG this week, also not allowing him maximum snaps with the rest of the starting OL is further proof.

I say make a decision and cut Rock and let DT and/or AA return KO. Get another safety or LB if needed to cover his ST tackling duties or use his roster spot on another need position (cb, ol, lb).

And call plays with confidence. The young guys will make mistakes, but with our D, we should be able to overcome most mistakes. Get the young guys the ball already!

I smell a trade of Ladell coming if they can get a 2nd or 3rd for him. CP is the man, and I figure MM is not a HUGE drop off from Betts. AA is the speedy homerun/ 3rd down threat. Rock is a teams guy period, even he knows it.

Betts is most valuable to the team as a future draft pick.

Disagree?

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | September 26, 2009 7:11 PM | Report abuse

Yes I disagree, in what scenario is anyone giving up a 2nd or 3rd round pick for Betts? We'd be lucky to get a 7th. If a team needs a running back they can sign Domnick Rhodes off the street at the vet minimum and no loss of picks.

The only move the Skins have to reduce RB numbers is cut Rock. Or Double A if lays the ball on the carpet in the next few weeks.

Or Portis on IR. Bones spurs in ankles are no joke. Yikes, did I just type that? I really hope Portis is OK.

Personally i would like to see this kid play a little. Our offensive line is garbage at run blocking so I don't want to see him between the tackles with his fumbling issues but if we can get him out in the open field like on screen passes or pitches then he may be the skins version of Sproles...no I am not saying he is that good but you never know how someone can perform unless you play him and with the way things look this year what do we have to lose I mean ESPN is picking the Lions to beat us that is just terrible.

Landry ran a 4.35 at the combine. Landry barely edged Portis in a race last year.

Alridge was clocked at 4.36 in the 40. So why is Aldridge the only back with "home-run" (to use The Mayor's mixed metaphors) potential? What changed about Portis in such a short span?

Posted by: Alan4 | September 26, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

I don't think y'all are seeing the forest for the trees with this RB situation. I think Betts and Cartwright are both gone next year if Mason and Aldridge pan out. If they don't perform, the Betts/Cartwright continue as Portis' understudies.

CP's cap numbers pretty much mean keeping him, but as he wears out Mason is basicly a Portis clone, and they are hoping Aldridge can be a faster version of Joe Washington.

Posted by: ProfessorWrightBSU | September 26, 2009 8:39 PM

He might be a Portis wannabe, but if he were a clone he would already have put up a thousand yards in his first two years in the league, not kicked around on three different rosters.

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 26, 2009 7:24 PM

I read that article as well. I just pray we are ahead by atleast 10 to start the second half. If you've watched enough Skins games, you can almost tell how the game is going to play out midway through the second quarter.

If I remember correctly, we were down through the first quarter last year before we blew it open with the Moss 50 yd-td catch.

Spread it out, Campbell has been playing excellent from the shotgun.

Posted by: saltine182 | September 26, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ProfessorWrightBSU | September 26, 2009 8:39 PM

Totally disagree with this post. Next year will be an uncapped year which the Skins FO will take advantage of to cut lose players with high cap #s.

IMO CP, and Betts will be gone next year. I do not expect Rock to last the whole season and could go sooner rather than later based on the play of AA and MM.

No cap next year will allow the Skins to sign a younger RB either through the draft or maybe by trade.

Although the Skins FO have been able to work the salary cap to some extent, the constant redoing of contracts has not allowed them to cut players because of the cap hit they would take. Next year allows the Skins to move players via trade or outright cutting them without having to take the cap hit.

This comment is obviously from someone who has never put on pads. 40 yard speed in shorts, healthy and rested is 1000% different than 3rd and 4 after you've been beat down for 25 carries. Portis is no longer a home run threat, but that has nothing to do with straight line speed. He's already taken 4 shots by the time he's hit the hole. He's beat up by week 4 every single season. This is why people who think they know football annoy me...

Despite your mistaken assumptions about me and unnecessary grumpiness, I appreciate your attempt to reply.

Here's another: if Portis has already taken 4 shots by the time he's hit the hole, and getting beat up is the problem, do you really think it would be any different for Aldridge? Or will the "home run" potential be sucked out of any back we acquire by such a beating?

rich, the 40 is a decent measure of speed, period. The difference you're trying to quantify is quickness/elusiveness vs straight speed.

On this we agree: a ballplayer doesn't have to be a track star to be quick.

Some straight track speed runners have been solid home-run RBs over the years (Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker, Eric Dickerson) whereas others were explosively quick (Barry Sanders, at 5'8" could dunk from a flat-footed position) and/or freakishly strong (Walter Payton).

Darrell Green was a track star (still holds the Lone Star Conference 100m dash record). And he caught a lot of "football speed" people from behind.

I'm not touchy about getting disagreed with, I actually think the rebuttal(s) makes sense. Too bad we can't get some value for betts though... with this year's RBs on the roster, he seems redundant.

I'm wondering why you have to be such a curmudgeon about it though.

Rent the original. Alan Parker is a great director....better yet, rent "The Committments," which he also directed, and which is one of the very best movies about music EVER,...

The Skins have 7 OL active, with 5 guys playing every play. One of the active backup OL guys is BMW, who hasn't played in this league in about 4 years and struggled a lot in preseason.

The coach is foolish ... last year (vs Bal), we had 3 OL go down during 1 game.

Of our OL starters, Heyer has had injury issues every year, Rinehart has never played at the NFL level in regular season, so its hard to know if he'll hold up. BMW may not be very durable if called on and we all know Samuels had multiple injuries last year and finished on IR. Depth on the OL is good, but if you only have 2 subs on game day, you're risking too much.

Make 8 OL active. We may need them.

And now I sleep. Hopefully.

If Portis's supposedly sore ankles prove to be a lingering problem, many things could change in the running game.

By JReid
==============================================

So, is he saying that he doesn't believe Portis has 'Sore ANkles'/Bone Spurs? Because the only time I use the word 'supposedly' is when I don't believe a person or I am not confident in their statement.

Or is this another conspiracy that doesn't hit the dart board?

Yo Fame, I'm really happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Battlefield Earth was the worst movie of all time.

No, jm220, not the only one. I was just musing over Cork's movie recommendations. He missed the point. He thought you wanted to see a good movie. I thought that you wanted your daughter to pick a bad one so that you would have that on her. That'll be good for the next five weeks or so: "You're not picking another movie after Fame."

Oh, and Beep Beep.
