It's Battle of the Kickers, Part II

A leader has not yet emerged in the position battle between kickers Shaun Suisham and Dave Rayner, but that could change Saturday when the Redskins play host to the Pittsburgh Steelers at FedEx Field.

Because of the team's poor performance on offense in last week's 23-0 loss to Baltimore, Suisham and Rayner did not attempt field goals. Special teams coach Danny Smith did evaluate each kicker on his kickoffs, but accuracy and distance on field-goal attempts are the biggest factors in the two-man competition.

"Obviously, the game weighs a little more" than what occurs in practice, Smith said. "We need action in the games. It's hard, it's very difficult, but there's nothing you can do about it. Hopefully, games work out and things have a tendency to even out."

Against the Ravens, Suisham handled kickoffs in the first half and Rayner took over after halftime. Smith said he had not spoken with Suisham and Rayner about this week's plan, "but if you think about what we did last time and predict that we might do that again, you'd probably be right.

"I'm just trying to be fair. They're both good guys. They both deserve work. They're both tireless workers. They both do what I ask them to do. I just want to win and I just want the best guy for the job. So I'm trying to make it as fair as I possibly can."

Maybe the Steelers will let us kick a few from 40 yards out just so we can pick a kicker.

It's your world, homey.

I prefer actual measurements like attempts against, incompletion %, yards given up, TDs given up, yards per attempt, and team defensive rankings, but if all it takes is a number of INTs for...more power to you.

Doesn't seem right to call a kicker competition a "battle of the kickers".

A battle would be if they kicked EACH OTHER.

How sad is when you don't have a possession in the red zone, AND you couldn't even give your kicker the opportunity to kick a field goal.

I'd say if they get in Elam/Dempsey range let em' kick it. They might not get much closer.

F it. Hail to them 'skins and the preseason.

Redskins Fan Base Declaration of 2009
______________________________________

It appears that the Redskins fan base is partially comprised of a group of "football geniuses". These football academicians are obviously wasting their lives in their current jobs!

Moreover, I think they are wasting their time even posting here because the rest of us fans are just not smart enough to understand how terrible the Redskins are for eternity!

In order to save these football geniuses' time, I suggest we all admit the following principles so to free the football geniuses to perform other scholarly football activity.

Summary of Redskin Football Status per RFKROX and other super-smart and negative posters:

1) Redskins are the worst team in the NFL forever.
2) Redskins need a new owner, a new general manager, a new head coach, a
new set of offensive and defensive coaches. They need a new QB, A new offensive line, a new set of recievers and tight ends. Redskins also need a new set of defensive players, plus a new stadium in a new city.

3) Unless #2 above is accomplished, the Redskins will have horrible seasons forever.

4) Redskins are worst than all other NFL teams

5) All other NFL teams have better owners, coaches and players

6) Anybody who ever hope that the Redskins will have any success is devoid of any football acumen.

As the representative for football-dumb Redskins fans, I admit that above information is forever true. We worship the ground where the football geniuses consume large amounts of brew daily.

Based on the above admission, I ask the football geniuses not to waste their time on these boards anymore. They should start consulting other fan bases and enlighten them on a daily basis regarding how inadequate their teams are. Redskins are a lost cause, so why bother?

We have also asked the Redskins gestapo to stop holding a gun to people's head to force them be a Redskins fan.

Effective immediately, all football geniuses are thereby relieved from their state-sponsored duties to be a Redskins fan. This is true, I am not kidding. Nobody is going to be sued if they stop being Redskins fan. Moreover, people are also free not to watch the games on TV or go the stadium!! I am absolutely not making this up guys!

You all have the freedom to adore Wade Phillips and Tom Brady. Hell, you guys can even date them, both, at the same time. Feel free to take along your family too!

If anyone on this team has proven their incompetence, it is Danny Smith. Let's look at the facts:

Except for a brief burst early last season, Suisham's kickoffs have been terrible usually reaching only the 10. Kickoff depth is one of the undervalued but clearly significant statistics in successful play.

Suisham has repeatedly missed makeable FGs at home.

The punting situation has been horrible. The revolving door has done little if any good.

Using Antwaan Randle-El as the punt returner has been a disaster. Who keeps designating him as the returner? Are they not watching the games?

Rock is steady and gets his yardage but there is absolutely no breakaway threat.

Without a potent offense special teams play is a critical element in reducing the length of the field for us and lengthening it for our opponents. In my view, the team has failed miserably in this area during Danny Smith's tenure which extends over two coaching regimes.

So many games are decided based on a couple of distinct events, a fumble here, a dropped pass there, and before you know it, the momentum and the game is lost.

Redskins went 8-8 last year despite all the crying on these message boards. They could have easily gone 10-6 and the playoffs would be an open competition (Arizona? puhleeze!)

I'll review the plan for those of you who choose to snort your ADD medication:

a. Go 5-5 the first 10 games.

b. Go 4-2 the final 6 games.

c. That's a record of 9-7, but with a mix of defensive scores and some additional scoring--an luck--one more win is 10-6.

9-7 or 10-6 ain't the worst in the league.

But it is an improvement.

I have a sense that with the skins putting some of their stars on the field Saturday night, we might see a very good performance out of the team this week.

In fact, again, with the stillers and pats being the next two teams, I'm quite sure a lot of redskin players will 'man up' and give us a two solid games.

And please don't put me to sleep with, "It's only preseason." When the 1s are playing against each other for a couple of series, it should be rather violent and well played.

Lol! Ya, I just threw up in my mouth a little, but I appreciate it. A little brevity and levity never hurt nobody.

That said, I'm gonna go out to my rental car and change the oil, and find something else to fix while I'm at it. Maybe some drywall, do a little welding. Ahem....

For all the out of towners, Mrs. Kay's in Silver Spring is the jam for Sunday brunch. It is THE place you go to for all-you-can-drink bubs 'n' OJ, AND you can eat crabs at the same time! A little too pricy for me as a college or grad student (10 years ago), but stretch the credit for the sloppy seconds.

IMHO.

That is all.

Conclusive evidence from Steinberg's blog that Zorn is on the outs with the Danny:

"No, I'm not much of an athlete any more," Zorn said. "Well, I can still play racquetball. I've been looking for a racquetball game."

BMW, I'd say that the frequent change of holders didn't help Squeezem last year, but I'm not sure it affected the distance of the FGs, or kickoffs for that matter (duh). That said, I hope Hunter S ADD makes it the entire year for punting reasons.

As well as for holding reasons. How many of our players can you say that about? Not D Thomas, for sure. Nor CR22.

Wasnt Orakpo precious thursday night, seeking the veterans approval and advice along the sidelines.I love it.If Crabtree had half the humility and work ethic of Orakpo he would be dangerous.I love Orakpo. But Sanchez looks as though he could be for real.

That would be eight times last year? You need to get her interested in hockey or baseball. Caps had 50 wins. Even the lowly last-in-the-league Nats have won 43. Put Strasburg on the roster and dude, you won't be able to come up for air.

Romo, Moe,

Sorry if I interrupted anything. I'll be leaving now. Go about your business. I didn't see or hear anything. I was looking for the Nats blog and opened the wrong door by mistake.

"I was looking for the Nats blog and opened the wrong door by mistake."

So how do you feel about Strasburg getting paid $15 mil?

Will he one day be the Nats' Doc Halladay?

Feel free to elaborate as with it being late night, all the 'it's gotta be redskin football or else types' are off somewhere in their wifebeaters complaining about Obamacare.

From the USA Today:

Taylor, traded to the Redskins last summer after 11 seasons with the Dolphins, never felt right in Washington. While his family stayed in Florida, the sack specialist endured a miserable season that included a mysterious calf injury, two surgeries and his lowest sack total in nine years — 3½ sacks in 13 games.

He also played out of position in coordinator Greg Blache's 4-3 scheme. Washington obtained Taylor after left end Philip Daniels blew out a knee on the first day of training camp. But the 6-6, 255-pound Taylor, now positioned at left outside linebacker in the Dolphins' 3-4 defense, made his name as a right end. Left ends are typically bigger and more physical, with more defined run-defense responsibilities.

"You can't put me in a spot where I can't be successful," Taylor says of the Redskins' experiment. "That was real frustrating. I go up there and coach Blache was set on what he wanted to do. It's like trading for Manny Ramirez because you need a home run hitter, and when he comes you say, 'We need a left-hand hitter, too. Bat lefty for us.' It doesn't work."

After the season, Taylor and agent Gary Wichard hashed it out with Redskins owner Dan Snyder and personnel chief Vinny Cerrato. Although the Redskins wanted a cap-friendlier, restructured contract with a $500,000 workout clause to address the offseason conditioning program, Taylor says he was assured his take-home pay wouldn't be reduced.

"Money used to be a driving force in a lot of ways," he says. "I could be in D.C. right now, making a boatload of money. But it became unimportant to me."

Yeah, right!

TE,

I didn't say that was the ONLY time she went topless, but lets just say the Michigan girl appreciates some hockey, and thank god she's not a Redwings fan (in more ways than one).

WASHINGTON — The ranks of poor and uninsured Americans are likely increasing – with more than 38.8 million believed to be in poverty.

Rebecca Blank, the Commerce Department's undersecretary of economic affairs, spoke to The Associated Press in advance of next month's closely watched release of 2008 census data.

Blank said the numbers likely will show a "statistically significant" increase in the poverty rate, to at least 12.7 percent. That would represent a jump of more than 1.5 million poor people compared with the previous year.

Re: Strasburg.

Layman here without the time to read the Natinals blog, but it seems to me this was a shrewd move by Mike Rizzo, with the Lerners as reluctant sponsors. (BTW, "Frank" Rizzo was a handle used by the Jerky Boys in the '90s. No shame in that mistake.)

If I'm wrong on the reluctant part of that, it's because of the $$ offered to T-whatever his name is (Yanks). If I'm right, it's because they offered that $180+ million deal knowing he wouldn't come here.

One would hope that Nats management, such as it is, would instantly forget the money paid for this guy, and regard the media with cold-blooded apathy and let him develop as he will, at his own pace.

"Taylor, traded to the Redskins last summer after 11 seasons with the Dolphins, never felt right in Washington."

I feel like you do about Taylor.

But do you know what?: he's right.

He didn't trade himself to Washington. The skins made the offer Parcells couldn't refuse.

The redskins' FO brought in a player in Taylor without a thought as to how his presence would effect the defensive scheme or where he fit into to it.

Vinny brought in a lanky defensive end to play against the monster right tackles in the NFC East and watched him get crushed like an Obama-voter's hopes.

Pray Prince Al isn't singing Taylor's song later this year.

Team aqua n' blue now has Taylor back, and turned the second round pick they got for the trade into Pat White, their 'wildcat' quarterback.

I wonder what offensive lineman could've been had with that pick by the redskins.

Don't hate Taylor, hate the lack of game on the part of the Wizards of Redskins Park.

Am I confused? Or would it be impossible for both kickers to have attempted kickoffs if we didn't score any points. Sounds like we would have kicked off in second half, and that is it. So it couldn't have been much of a kickoff competition either, right?

Moe, there's room in my heart to disapprove of both Jason Taylor AND the front office who brought him in. And to forgive both of them... in time.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | August 20, 2009 12:08 AM | Report abuse

mikey, I think I've come up with one and maybe two scenarios for the Redskins not scoring any points but kicking off more than once. Taking for granted that the Skins would have kicked off at the beginning of the first or second half...

a. In the event of a scoreless tie in regulation, the Skins could kick off in the overtime period (depending on the coin toss outcome, kick/receive decision, etc.). That would be two kickoffs.

2. In the event of their opponent's scoring via safety, the Redskins could kick off via place kick, albeit with a holder versus a tee.

Or somethin'

mark65, you gotta have stick-to-it-ive-ness when you're getting started up here. And either thick skin so things don't bug you or a thick head so you don't notice the things that oughta bug you (I have the latter).

"Pray Prince Al isn't singing Taylor's song later this year."

Subtle difference, which you pointed out without realizing it, is that Prince Al chose the Redskins, while Taylor did not.

Still can be skeptical about it, but the circumstances are much less questionable regarding the recent addition. Prince Al was the product of a loving marriage. Taylor? He was a rash decision following a trip to Planned Parenthood.

I supported the Jason Taylor trade when it was made ... because I thought it would be handled much differently. Taylor was a "win immediately" deal, so I figured we'd see a major WR coming next (Housh, Boldin). Didn't happen. Then they kept all the rookies.

And of course, they told Taylor to play LDE, even though he was player of the year at RDE just 2 seasons before!! Take a HOF player and put him out of position? Nonsense. Since I'd seen exactly that swap fail badly with Chris Doleman in SF (horrid at LDE -- after 5 games or so they moved him back to RDE and he was an instant beast), I was pretty shocked.

Gotta blame that in part on the coaches, in part on mgmt.

As for Albert, my guess is that they let him do what he does best. Or maybe I'm just hoping that's what happens...

Once again...all togther now and with FEELING: that 2nd round pick would have been packaged with the 1st for Sanchez. No O-Lineman, no Orakpo, and no continuity once again for the offense.

Well, at least the first two. That 3rd one seems a bit fairytale-ish at present.

Let's get the record straight, Rayner was the only one who got a chance to kick-off. Suisham did not get the opportunity. Suisham should have the opportunity to show his ability after the revolving door of holders last year. That would unerve anyone.
