Brennan Headed to Injured-Reserve List

Second-year quarterback Colt Brennan will be placed on the injured-reserve list, sidelining him for the season, with hip, knee and hamstring injuries, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

With Brennan out, it would appear that Chase Daniel will be the Redskins' No. 3 quarterback, behind Jason Campbell and Todd Collins. The Redskins also could claim another quarterback off waivers.

Brennan aggravated a hamstring injury and also injured his knee while being sacked late in the fourth quarter of Thursday's 24-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars at Jacksonville. Afterward, Brennan said the injuries were not considered serious.

In examining Brennan's left knee and hamstring, however, Redskins medical personnel apparently expressed further concern about a left hip injury that occurred Aug. 13 against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. In April 2008, Brennan had surgery to repair a slightly torn labrum in his right hip.

On Friday night, Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, Coach Jim Zorn and other key team personnel discussed their options regarding Brennan, sources said. Brennan struggled in the preseason while competing with rookie Chase Daniel for the No. 3 quarterback job.

Facing a deadline today to set the opening 53-man roster, the Redskins were leaning toward giving Brennan as much time as necessary to heal by assigning him to injured reserve and keeping Daniel to play behind starter Jason Campbell and longtime backup Todd Collins. And Redskins officials also were mulling the possibility of keeping an extra cornerback because of growing concern about starter Carlos Rogers, sources said, who was sidelined most of the preseason because of a lingering calf injury.

Nickel corner Fred Smoot is the primary backup for starters Rogers and DeAngelo Hall. Second-year corner Justin Tryon and rookie Kevin Barnes were expected to complete the group. But with the uncertainty regarding Rogers as the team prepares to open the season Sept. 13 against the New York Giants at Giants Stadium, the Redskins might also keep Bryon Westbrook, who spent the past two seasons on their practice squad.

As for Brennan, going on injured reserve would be a disappointing capper to a frustrating experience for him since camp began. Zorn was eager for Brennan to push Collins for the No. 2 job, but the battle never materialized because Collins maintained a steady approach beginning his 15 th season and Brennan struggled with his decision-making throughout the preseason.

Brennan threw three interceptions in the first three games - one was returned 99 yards for a touchdown - and found himself competing with Daniel to remain on the team. Brennan had his best performance in the preseason finale against Jacksonville, completing 10 of 14 passes for 83 yards in an outing cut short because on injury.

Washington used the 186th pick on Brennan, who was a record-setter while playing in a run-and-shoot offense at the University of Hawaii. Some teams had backed off because of concerns about Brennan's past (he pleaded guilty to burglary and trespassing in 2004 and spent a week in jail) as well as issues with his health and weight, league sources said at the time. But Zorn was intrigued by Brennan's accuracy.

In three seasons at Hawaii, Brennan set 21 NCAA records. He passed for 14,193 yards with 131 touchdowns while completing 70.4 percent of his passes. Brennan was unable to participate in the 2008 minicamp and the offseason OTAs because he was recovering from the surgery on his right labrum.

It turns out no one won Washington's battle to be the team's third quarterback.

Despite Colt Brennan getting placed on injured reserve, Chase Daniel will not make the team, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Even more surprising, Daniel will reportedly not be considered for the practice squad.

Ouch.

The Redskins will have only two active quarterbacks after Saturday: Jason Campbell and Todd Collins.

Hey Curz, you out-scooped me by one minute. I went back to check my sources. That's why the "out-of-town" writers get it posted before the locals. LOL.

Posted by: frediefritz | September 5, 2009 12:11 PM | Report abuse

Teams usually like to at least have a third QB on the Practice Squad, to run the scout team and help the Defense prepare each week.

I love the idea of having only 2 QBs on the 53 man roster, but I think you need a 3rd one in the system.

This would make room for LB Darrel Young as the 8th LB as well as Mason as the 4th RB.

Extra spot for a "scat" back who can't play specials? They should keep the linebacker.

This makes more sense. Signing more OL. Big Mike did not have all that great a game ... despite all the accolades thrown his way.

So who is this source who tells Chris Mortensen that Chase won't even make the practice squad? It seems there's a limited number of candidates who would know this. Does Chase know? Has he hauled his gear out of Redskins Park yet? Is there a beat reporter on the premises?

If there is a trade, I hope it's with the Bucs and not with the Vikes for Rosenfels.

In my mind, bringing Sage back to Washington would not be wise.

Forget the scatback ... I think I read that Portis is already sore about them giving away time to Betts. Add a scatback and the guy might sit out for a game with an injury. The scatback probably won't get to play. Best thing to do is to set yourself up for success where you can.

No third stringer means ARE as an emergency QB, in the highly unlikely case of Campbell and Collins getting injured in the same game.

Gawd more soap-operic drama on stage whilst no one is watching the man in the green coat behind those curtains?

Will the ***really**** serious issues be addressed by the coaching staff and Vinnie Mouse, Mickey's cousin.

1. Samuels has recovered nicely from serious injuries suffered last year, Heyer is starting on the right (he too suffered some injuries) but who backs them up? The backup situation at guard isn't all that great with Thomas coming off some serious sh*&t.

2. Perhaps Rogers did not have the best attitude this camp? Apparently, getting burned and he did not play in the last preseason game. Hall has been getting burned regularly ... by Marko Williams in practice just like Rogers. That is a serious problem in Blache's defense. The other corners behind them are even worst. Barnes may develop but he's not there yet.

3. If you're going to trade for a new QB you are going to have to trade/replace Collins because they aren't going to come in to be 3rd stringers if they are any good. These you can get off the waiver wire.
