Brennan to IR List Is a Possibility

Just got off the phone with a couple of sources who are telling me there's a good chance quarterback Colt Brennan will be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list because of a hip injury he suffered earlier in the preseason. I'm still working the phones and, obviously, I'll update this as I gather more information.

First!

Darn. Yeah. Welcome to the family, Chase.

Posted by: TheDuck1 | September 5, 2009 9:38 AM | Report abuse

I'd hate to see the kid go to the IR, but it'd be nice to keep both Brennan and Daniel on the roster!

What the he**??? What hip injury? That was last season.

The Skins just want to keep Chase Daniel...ugh!

Posted by: Lisa_R | September 5, 2009 9:40 AM | Report abuse

How "Gibbsian" this would be a great solution. Keep both in house, let them simmer and let the battle resume next season.

Posted by: chrislarry | September 5, 2009 9:41 AM | Report abuse

Lisa this is the best possible solution, whats your beef? Barring complete meltdown neither would play. On ir, colt still hangs with team and develops. its brilliant.

Posted by: chrislarry | September 5, 2009 9:45 AM | Report abuse

RI has managed to get video of poor Colt in the Skins training facility.

At the 22-second mark, you can see how he re-aggravates the injury.

When did this happen???

Posted by: hanimal03 | September 5, 2009 9:49 AM | Report abuse

Chrislarry, this is definitely a Gibbsian move but I'm pretty sure the rules were more than drastically different back then. Weren't you able to call up from IR? This is a permanent placement on the shelf for the season, right?

If I was Colt I'd be pretty ticked. The way the IR seems to work now it's more damaging to the individual player. If it were Chase it'd be easier to stomach since he's a rookie but a second year player? We'll see what happens...

Posted by: trolly_time | September 5, 2009 9:49 AM | Report abuse

Are you kidding me? The decision is not THAT difficult. I doubt neither of them would be picked up if you released them today...this is making a mountain out of a mole hill. Cheers.

Posted by: MPNangle | September 5, 2009 9:51 AM | Report abuse

trolly time, yes back then u had to prove a hang nail, and it was more like baseball with different time limits (8 games i think)

but Colt wasnt going to play anyway, if this happens he keeps his contract, can still workout and participate in meetings and watch and learn. and he can still be cooley's mini me.

if i was colt, i'd be pleased i wasn't cut outright.

Posted by: chrislarry | September 5, 2009 9:54 AM | Report abuse

I guess this is smart, so they can keep both but it makes me mad. ;( If he had a hip injury we sure didn't know about it. The injury was during first year here. It was a sore hammy and Colt said he was fine, so did coach Zorn.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 5, 2009 9:55 AM | Report abuse

"because of a hip injury he suffered earlier in the preseason."

They totally made that up! We heard nothing of a hip injury.

Keep Alridge!!!!

Posted by: rachel216 | September 5, 2009 9:58 AM | Report abuse

This is good. This is REAL good. Neither Colt nor Chase is likely to see even a single down of action behind center this year, so we get to keep both of them this way.

I think that, if it ever came to it, Chase Daniel showed a little bit more steadiness, so maybe he's the best choice to hold the clipboard. But I've gotta say that Colt Brennan can really make a play and shows some real guts out there.

But I have often wondered why the Redskins need a 3rd-string QB at all. In the unlikely event that we need one in an actual game, can't we just put Randle-El in that role for the game or so until we pulled some has-been off the rack? It seems to me that we could use that roster slot for something that would be more useful.

Posted by: FergusonFoont | September 5, 2009 9:59 AM | Report abuse

If that isn't shady. I was going to say how do you go on IR for a bruised knee but pulling the bad hip card after no mention of it all year and Colt himself saying how healthy he was this camp. haha

This is a Gibbs move taking advantage of IR

its posted on the redskins site -- the Larry Weisman Blitz blog , which i never really knew was there...

"Hey, folks. ... Early news on roster cut day. I have learned that the Redskins plan to put QB Colt Brennan on the injured reserve list. The popular second-year player has been fighting a nagging hamstring injury that he reaggravated against Jacksonville on Thursday night. An MRI exam revealed a tear of the hamstring. Brennan also has a hip injury. "He could be out for a while with his hamstring," coach Jim Zorn tells me. "He's a guy we need to get rehabbed. For us it's an opportunity to not keep putting a Band-Aid on it." Zorn informed Brennan of the decision on Friday but the planned move came too late to be sent to the NFL by the 4 p.m. ET deadline for transactions. The Redskins would still have to make a decision about whether or not rookie free agent Chase Daniel should be their No. 3 QB or whether he might be released and brought back to the practice squad. Todd Collins is the backup to starter Jason Campbell. The Redskins, like all NFL teams, need to be at 53 players, from the current 75, by 6 p.m. ET."

O.K. Tweedle dee in, tweedle dum out for the season. Next, lets grab that running back from the STEELERS that TOMLIN's trying to stash on the practice squad. Then we can forget ALRIDGE, DORSEY, and MASON. Oh, and there's already an OT on the market from KC that looks as good as any in our camp.

Posted by: glawrence007 | September 5, 2009 10:10 AM | Report abuse

mrbrooksbaldwin- You're right, that's sooooooo Joe Gibbs!! How many times during mini camp & training camp has Colt said he feels really good and healthy for the first time (since the hip injury was the problem his first year but apparently they have been lying to us and all of a sudden his hip injury popped up again right before cutdown day.) Strange...

Once we hear from Colt, he's gonna be like "nope, I'm perfectly fine!"

Posted by: rachel216 | September 5, 2009 10:12 AM | Report abuse

"Once we hear from Colt, he's gonna be like "nope, I'm perfectly fine!""

Not a chance in hades he says this, he will toe the company line and say his hip was hurting and that effected his play. If he wants to stay with team he will say this.

If this is true, I say hats off Skins, shrewd move. The system should be gamed this way.

No...

They will have only 2 QBs on the roster to make room for the youth and the od heads....

Wynn, Jackson, and Mason stays!

chrislarry- exactly!! Been waiting all summer long! October 1st vs. the Bruins! It's almost here.! ;)

4th, I think they keep 3 QBs. I just don't see Zorn not keeping three qbs considering his past, his expertise and his desire to teach young ones.

But we will know today...

Posted by: chrislarry | September 5, 2009 10:24 AM | Report abuse

This is exactly what Gibbs 1.O did - but it seemed more "legal" then. In fact, Mark May wrote in his book how certain players were told to "pretend" to get injured during the game so they could be placed on IR.

I have to think this stupid move has less to do with keeping both QBs (Chase Daniel will NOT get signed off of waivers by another team) and more with keeping more RBs - or maybe even picking up another O lineman or another QB not on our roster.

Cl - This is a transition year where we have alot of last year vets we nee this year, and have a lot of great potential youth.

So, In conclusion, we can't afford 3 QBs this year on the team. Next year, Wynn and Daniel, and maybe Fletcher/ARE/Carter will be gone and the youth movement will be in full mode where there will be plenty of roster spots open.

Get it?

good point chris larry.

Posted by: trolly_time | September 5, 2009 10:36 AM | Report abuse

We can keep JC and TC as the two QBS, now we can keep Alridge and Mason!! What happens if your two QBs get hurt? I'm sure some teams carry two QBs only. Pats have two QBs right now.

PFT is saying that the hamstring is torn according to an MRI. I just wonder if it's really Colt's MRI or if they just found one of a torn hammy and said it was his. Either way he lives to fight another day.

It says here that Chase Brennan will be on the practice squad to start the season, and they upgrade the clipboard to the self-holding model.

They can pay for the upgrade with money from suing the deadbeat ticket buyers. I wonder how much of the judgments they will actually collect.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | September 5, 2009 10:54 AM | Report abuse

I think the fact that this team got through camp without a single major injury is good news for the vets.

With everyone healthy, 'skins have to think they have more than a decent shot at the playoffs.

They are more likely to go with the old hands, rather than risk rookie mistakes.

I see Rock (and maybe Thomas) running back kickoffs, I see Wynn as insurance against Daniels getting hurt, and I see Betts making the team, as well as Yoder. I have a gut feeling Monty might go, but if he stays, that's why, methinks.

If it was a rebuild year, all those guys, save Thomas might be cut. Wynn still might if Blache feels Alexander and/or Jarmon could hold up at LDE.

Remember, of course that last year the team kept ALL its draftees on the big squad. I think two of three young LBS (Henson,Glenn, Young) will be on the active team

Posted by: TheCork | September 5, 2009 10:56 AM | Report abuse

Technical question:

Can they just put him on IR now? Or does he have to make the 53 and then be put on IR? Might the skins have to waive someone, like Chase or Mason, and then put Colt on IR and then re-sign the waived player? It would expose the waived player for two minutes.

Posted by: skinfanman | September 5, 2009 10:57 AM | Report abuse

Sounds shady.

I think Colt would be our 3rd QB if he was healthy. Not knowing the rules for placing someone on IR, I'm just going to assume he's actually hurt. I know that's foolish.

Maybe Chase is the man for the 3QB job though...

I'm looking to see JC play 16 STRONG games this year and another 60 or so after that, so Chase/Colt/IR is meaningless.

Just because Colt goes to IR doesn't mean Chase automatically get in.

Think with your GM head, not your fan head!

Posted by: 4thFloor | September 5, 2009 11:10 AM | Report abuse

Well you couldn't ask for worse publicity than "granny gate" and we wonder why some fans hate this team and it's current owner. Think about it; Bobby Mitchell(HOR'er) left this team resigning as Asst.GM never giving a reason why and now we have arguably one of worst personel men in the NFL in Vinny Cerrato ticket prices, parking, food, and beverage items have all escalated through the roof at a time when most can least afford it,to put it bluntly Danny Snyder could care less he is greedy and one day and that day trust me will be soon he will reap what he has sown.

Definitely! A player can only play in a limited number of games and be eligible for the practice squad. Only 47 players are eligible for game days. Once on injured reserve may preclude practice squad
eligibility, i.e., Buzbee. Practice squad players are free agents as well.
