Cerrato Says 'No' on Vick

For what it's worth again, I just got a text message from Vinny Cerrato about the latest Vick rumors/reports.

As I mentioned previously, Cerrato gave me a response of "no" when I asked about a possible Vick-Skins union last week. I put the same question to him today, and his response was the same -- "no."

Now, could Daniel Snyder do a deal with Vick's agent, Joel Segal (who also happens to represent Jason Campbell), without telling Cerrato? Anything is possible, but I don't see that happening. At this point, if Vick were bound for the Redskins, the executive vice president of football operations would know about it. That's The Mayor's take at the moment.

Vick coming here would make sense if the OLine can't protect...at least he can run for his life and gain positive yards doing it. Him being a lefty may add a lil something to it since Zorn knows what that's like.

I'd rather Vinny's 'no' come from a more credible source.

I'd also rather they stop with the revolving door system that now has Shanny coming here after this season. How can a marketing/PR guy have such horrible PR for his crown jewel?? What's next, buy the Post just to control the Sports Section?

Posted by: kahlua87 | July 28, 2009 10:23 AM | Report abuse

If The Owner tries to sign Vick, then he tries to do it as a package deal ... where he also gets the football services (in some capacity) of Tony Dungy, who the Commissioner attached to Vick as part of the conditions allowing him to return.

Dungy would be a bigger prize (and ultimately, the bigger plash) than Vick.

Posted by: dcsween | July 28, 2009 10:24 AM | Report abuse

Vick doesn't make sense at all because an agent will never put 2 starting caliber QB clients on the same team. That's a conflict of interest and doesn't maximize the agent's profits in his pockets......

Yes (not that there's anything wrong with that).

This would be the same executive VP that said there hadn't even been any talks with the Dolphins on Jason Taylor three hours before the trade happened, then afterwords said we don't tip our hand or tell the media what we're doing. I'd say its pretty obvious Cerrato's comments mean nothing at all an nobody knows if he's coming here or not.

What I see is we have an underachiever as our starter who is in the last year of his deal and who the FO tried to dump all offseason, we have a 38 year old journeyman as his backup, and we have two serious projects behind that and the opportunity to get a once premier talent for pennies on the dollar who is from the area and this area more so than any other probably gives him the best chance for the fastest fan acceptance as well as his boy and former teammate at Tech and Atlanta D. Hall being on the team.......I don't think its a definite but how in the world can it not be a possibility/something that is talked about until Vick does finally sign somewhere, and Vinny's word has proven to mean nothing so it will be talked about.

"Vick Candidates? New Orleans, Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami"

The saints already have a Vick-lite player in R Bush, the fins drafted one in P White, leaving two possible spots from your list: tampa and the jags.

Given the proximity to the ATL area and the resultant buzz from his old fanbase, if I own the jags, I bring in Vick as a back up to D Garrard and find ways to get him on the field.

Posted by: MistaMoe | July 28, 2009 10:30 AM | Report abuse

Let's assume that everybody is telling the truth here and there will be no Vick signing. What should Cerrrato be working on? First and foremost, he should be trying like heck to close the deal on Orakpo and Jarmin. These guys both could really benefit from a full preseason. Next, he should try to work a trade with the Ravens sending ARE to the receiver starved team for maybe a quality offensive lineman.

Posted by: RedSkinHead | July 28, 2009 10:30 AM | Report abuse

I'm glad that Mike Vick is back in the NFL. The Commissioner did Vick some justice and is allowing him to find a team and get back to work. Enough of that. Why do we always do this with our first round drafts picks. Wait until players start holding out and then have to rush a contract together. We did this with Rogers, Cambell, and Landry. The only player that we had signed from the first round before training camp was Sean Taylor. R.I.P Teams like the Steelers and Patriots already have their top picks signed and will be in camp on time. Imagine if Orakpo decides to holdout and he doesn't get into camp on time how is that going to look. I though he was supposed to be our starting LOLB. How you going to have your starting LOLB holding out missing camp time in his rookie season like he doesn't already have enough on his plate. We got Haynesworth deal done and he within a matter of hours and you mean to tell me that we drafted Orakpo back in March and he is still not under contract. This deal needs to be done within the next 48 hours. Come on FO get her done.

So are you all saying it goes down like this.

Vinny tells a WaPo beat reporter, No we are not signing Vick
Vinny and Danny sign Vick.
WaPo beat reperter feels like he has been lied to about Vick
WaPo reporter feels that he can no longer trust the front office and is allowed now to get stories by any means necessary, looks for any source he can find, and then reports random stuff.
Vick then hurts himself and is at 30% for the year a total dissapointment.
Reporter calls out Vinny and gets him in trouble with someone and then everyone blames the reporter.

Cycle?

Zorn wouldn't know what to do with Vick if they did get him. I mean Campbell played extremely well when running the offense out of the shotgun the year before but Zorn never accomadated JC with it given the line's horrible performance. He'd probably put Vick at slot receiver and have him run 5yd out patterns all day.

The Orakpo deal can't be done yet. Not without overpaying. Once the 10th pick gets done all the other signings will fall into place. Crabtree is holding out for big money and Agents won't sign there players until they find out if he can bust the slotting system.

That or if come the first or second day of camp Orakpo says forget about it and decides to come in. Without missing camp days though there is no reason for him to sign before knowing if Crabtree can get his team to blink.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...underachiever? A guy who improves his QB rating, Completion %, total TDs despite doing so despite having to learn 3 different systems with this team is FAR from an underachiever. I think he's played ABOVE expectations considering the Redskins best efforts to sabotage him.

But whatever...we've all been thru JC discussion a million times here. Just know that Vick is FAR from the answer.

Redskinsfanatic1: Well said

Vinny saying “no” means absolutely nothing. So Jason Reid asked him about Vick. Was Vinny suppose to say “yes”? lol. Of course he is going to say no. Why let the rest of the league know you’re pursuing the guy? Plus, Snyder loves the big splash.

We’re talking about the same Vinny Cerrato who tried everything he could to get Jay Cutler. We’re talking about the same Vinny who tried everything he could to get Mark Sanchez. Sounds like he has a lot of faith in Campbell, huh? Campbell is in his last year of hi s contract. He has not been resigned yet for a reason. So they tried there damndest to get rid of Campbell in the offseason, no all of a sudden they’re satisfied with him as the starter? Doubt it. Snyder and Vinny do not like him, nor do they trust him!! They will be able to sign Vick for a FRACTION of what he used to make. Why not?? It will light a fire under Campbell’s a$$, and if JC is not producing by week 6, hello Mr. Vick.

Vick we’ll be in a Skins jersey by training camp. Believe it.

Snyder certainly don't give a crap about PETA, neither do I and millions of other human rights groups, I will suppose that if Vick will help this team in any capacity other than QB, Skins will certainly welcome him. Forget about PETA or any animal rights group, any PR nightmare they bring will be counter by human rights group. I'm patiently waiting for any reason to dump my monthly donation to PETA.

Well, I said I wasn't much of a guesser. But the Bush comparison doesn't appeal to me. Reggie is basically a 'tweener, and Vick is what, 225-230 at this point? Plus he doesn't compete with Drew Brees, a completely different QB.

I don't think Jacksonville could get a solid number one pick for David Garrard. But they're a candidate.

The problem with signing Vick IMO is the length of the contract. Teams will want to sign him for one year, but what if he succeeds? He becomes a FA. Does he let them sign him to two successive 1 year contracts?

Considering both Vick and JC are represented by Segal, I can't see Vick even considering the Skins and vice-versa. It's going to take a team with a strong coach, GM, and owner such as the Patriots or Dolphins to take on such a potential PR mess...also, Vick will likely have accumulated a fair amount of rust since he won't have had any game action in almost 3 years before he even played an NFL game.

Although Vinny has been known to mislead the media in the past, I can't imagine even Dan Snyder would want to take on the PR firestorm that would come with signing Vick even to an NFL minimum contract.

Given his financial troubles, I believe his agent should consider the UFL, where he could probably get a larger short-term contract than he could from any NFL team at this point. Then, if he proves he still have some skills left, he would undoubtedly be pursued by an NFL team for next season.

The DA is threating to a grand jury investigation because he 1. took possesion of the unregistered handgun and 2. transported it over state lines. They are trying to get a security gaurd to states evidence against AP.

But it is also said to be a tactic to ensure that AP turns states evidence on Buress when his trail comes.

I am all for signing M. Vick! I know that alot of backlash will come of it, but I think he is better than Colt will ever be. I also think if any org could supply him the chance to succeed again it would be the Skins, he has D. Hall to be friends with and hopefully keep in line, not to mention his family is just down 95, huge fan base in NOVA, MD and DC due to his days at VT. YOu can not question his athletic ability, you just cant. I know him and I know that he will work his butt off to prove everyone wrong and get back into the game at a high level.

If he does not play QB, which I am not sure he will, how awesome would that guy be at Safety teamed up with Landry or even a 3rd down back.

But he would not be a poor back up either. He is somewhat familiar with the West Coast offense, unbelievable quick release, maybe Zorn could help him.

I say give him a shot, but I am biased, obviously.

Hail Skins!

The Skins won't use the Wildcat this year, and they already have a gadget QB in Randle-EL anyway. If Campbell leaves in Free Agency they can sign Vick in 2010. Vick won't get anything more than a one year deal if he signs with a team this year.

From CheezBoy:

Well, it was definitely less than 12 hours from Michael Vick's reinstatement before the Vick-to-Ashburn rumors got ramped up to dangerous levels late last night. Hey, at least it'd be a short drive from Norfolk for the PETA folks. Let's recap:

1) Tanner Cooley tweets the following: "Wondering why Michael Vick is in Lansdowne and even more, why was he at Buffalo Wing Factory in Ashburn earlier today??"

2) Pro Football Talk posts a Vick to Skins? item, with this as the money graf: "We're beginning to pick up some subtle indications from a couple of sources with connections to the team that the Redskins should not be ruled out as potential suitors for Mr. Vick." Ok, so that's a weak chicken broth of a money graf, but it's better than "Not Interested!"

3) 106.7 The Fan's new Skins beat reporter, Chris Russell, chimes in on Twitter with this: "Good Show on Vick to Skins tonight. It is real. It will happen in next few days says me. Rep. spotted in Ashburn tonight. Skins won't resist!"

4) WUSA posts Skins-on-Vick stuff from the Park, "I would welcome him," veteran locker room leader Renaldo Winn says.

5) Rich Tandler attempts to calm the furor on Real Redskins, writing that "I suppose there is a chance that Vick will wind up in Washington, but there's also a chance that a meteorite will land in the reflecting pool today, too."

Gweez,
I think they can sign Orakpo today without overpaying. They just look at what Satfford was paid and what percentage increase that represented over last year's number one pick. Then they just apply that percentage increase to the value of the contract for last year's 13th pick. Guranteed money should be calculated the same way. The one caveat is the length of the contract, and if I am Cerrato, I would want Orakpo for at least a seven year contract. As far as Jarmin's contract, he should get the same deal that Barnes got. I think that is fair: 3rd rounder pay vs 3rd rounder pay.

"Vinny tells a WaPo beat reporter, No we are not signing Vick
Vinny and Danny sign Vick.
WaPo beat reperter feels like he has been lied to about Vick
WaPo reporter feels that he can no longer trust the front office and is allowed now to get stories by any means necessary, looks for any source he can find, and then reports random stuff.
Vick then hurts himself and is at 30% for the year a total dissapointment.
Reporter calls out Vinny and gets him in trouble with someone and then everyone blames the reporter."

There are so many things wrong in that above statement I don't even know where to begin.

Even as a joke or attempt at sarcasm that is a heavily distorted view of what actually happened. ESPECIALLY the implication that the reporter in question was unfairly blamed. Trust me, any criticism was WELL deserved.

I'm not a Vinny fan (are there any?) but if it boils down to a cage match with him vs JLC, I am in Vinny's corner EVERY TIME. It's part of his job to lie to the media. A good reporter doesn't act like a petulant child and take it personally.

And I agree that there is nothing weaker than a guy giving himself a nickname. There is only ONE MAYOR, and his name is FRED HOIBERG. (look it up younglings)

SIGN MIKE VICK

Posted by: smoke26 | July 28, 2009 12:49 PM | Report abuse

I really wouldn't be surprised to see Vick in a Redskins uniform. His mandatory 6-week suspension plays perfectly into the hands of Snyder. Snyder gives Campbell a 6-week "tryout", at least, without the pressure of being pulled mid-game, and if Campbell doesn't play up to Snyder's standards, enter Vick. Seems like a very Snyder-esque thought process. If Campbell does play up to par, then Vick becomes the Redskins utility man in certain packages.

On paper to the unbiased eye, Vick to the Redskins makes more sense than Vick to any other team not named Tampa or Minnesota. Jacksonville seems to be the popular thought, but Garrard has a much heftier and longer contract, is roughly the same age, would be tougher to move, and is about equivalent to Campbell in production so far. Campbell, on the other hand, would be just as easy to replace production-wise as Garrard, has one year left on his deal, and has already attempted to be moved multiple times. No reason to believe Vick would have a better shot there than he would over here. Nearly every other team is set at QB, either with a 'future' prospect or current starters (except Minnesota and possibly Cleveland).

(BTW, if I was Minnesota, I'd snatch up Vick in a heartbeat.)

Posted by: psps23 | July 28, 2009 12:51 PM | Report abuse

Top 5 reasons for the Redskins NOT to sign Vick:

5. The division that will occur amoungst fans and players who can't support Vick after what he did.

4. If we want to run the wildcat (which, let's face it - we ought to be learning how to run our regular west-coast offense first), we can use Randle-El.

3. The obvious backlash will create an absolute media circus that will be a giant distraction.

2. Haven't we shown enough lack of faith in Jason Campbell already? Jason Campbell will have a very good year this year and will keep getting better if the Redskins continue to stick with the same offense and improve the O-line. We don't need Vick.

1. The guy was a below-average quarterback before, and now he has been out of the league since 2006. As a back-up, there's way more upside with Colt. I'd rather start Chase Daniel than Vick if everyone else were hurt.

Sign Vick and let him work out the Preseason, if he does not work, then let him go!

TheNewTruth>>> I am not sure that the Redskins faithful is completely divided in the VICK possibility.

Individuals said the same crap about R. Lewis...cant stand behind a killer, etc...whatever and now he is the darling of the NFL.

I would go out on a limb to say that the fans would be more in favor of Vick than not.

Cyndy, can we do a poll on the readers for the Vick situation????

Posted by: mhartz1 | July 28, 2009 1:15 PM | Report abuse

I say bring in M. Vick if it is at a good price. He can run some Wildcat formations for us, be a reciever at times, be a running back at times, be a quarterback at times and it might be something to keep Campbell motivated. So bring him in, but bring him in as an all purpose guy and not as someone that would compete for the #1 QB job. But if Campbell falters, he could be some insurance as well.

Posted by: Alvin_Walton | July 28, 2009 1:23 PM | Report abuse

I feel like Vick should get another chance to play and as a person. He's been judged and done his time. I recently got a dog and this has made his crime even more heinous to me.

as far as VICK playing for the skins, I REALLY LIKE JASON CAMPBELL AS THE QB.

if we we're starting Collins, Brennan, or Sanchez I would be heavily in favor of getting Vick.

Posted by: pabrian2003 | July 28, 2009 1:25 PM | Report abuse

The Jason Campbell bashing and constant desire to replace him with any available warm body drives me crazy! How good would you be at your job if every year the boss kept being replaced with someone who asked you to do your job a totally new way, switched all the related vocabulary, and expected you to shine from day one? By the way, your supporting cast was questionable, often calling in sick and showing signs of inability to perform? Meanwhile everyone is blaming you for all the problems at work? Wouldn't you be annoyed if people at the job kept trying to replace you the whole time? Wouldn't you feel that at the beginning of the 2nd year with the same boss that you'd be set to really show what you could do? Wouldn't you be fired up to prove everyone wrong? Give Jason campbell some half-decent protection (it's not like he's totally immobile himself) and the redskins will make the playoffs with him this year. If the defense is as special as I think it can be, this team colud even go deep into the postseason. I can promise you that 8-8 wouldn't even be possible with Vick at the helm.

Posted by: TheNewTruth | July 28, 2009 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Vick would make sense here in DC as a two-QB offense where JC and MV go in and out and confuse the hell out of defenses. Plus we can get a deal on Vick for his first year and can assess the situation before putting up real money

What he did was horrific and fans are justified in not wanting to reward someone who behaved that way, no matter how much he says he regrets it. Players play better when they have something to prove. Vick game was not his problem it was his off field issues.

My opinion - the negatives far outweigh the potential positives of signing Vick. As a lifelong Redskins fan, I have to acknowledge that there is a much better run franchise with a stadium paid for with my Maryland tax dollars in Baltimore. What Vick did is so many orders of magnitudes worse than what Ray Lewis did. Don't "Just say 'No,'" Vinny. Don't do it. Please.

the owners were given the green light on vick two days ago. if the owners were half as interested in vick as some of you football fans are he'd be signed by now, WOULDN'T HE?
