Daniel a Redskins Roster Casualty (Updated)

Just confirmed an earlier ESPN report that rookie quarterback Chase Daniel will not make the Redskins' final 53-man roster. Although he was not expected to be named to their practice squad, either, he recently tweeted that he "was told they want me back if I clear waivers for practice squad. I'll know for sure [Sunday]." Are the Redskins are in the market for a No. 3 QB? We'll keep seeking answers.

No, we don't need to have a third QB. But I heard last night on NHL network that Jeff Garcia might get release by the Oakland Raiders.

Bigger headline: will Alrige: casualty or not?

Posted by: periculum | September 5, 2009 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Oops noticed my mistake once I submitted. That was supposed to be NFL network. We don’t need three qbs. I wonder what their explanation is for Daniel not making it. He basically did everything he could do. It must be his height.

Great, let's use the roster spot to pick up a veteran tackle.

No way Jeff Garcia comes to the Skins to be a 3rd QB behind Todd Collins.

We should pick up Dominic Rhodes

It will be nice to finally take this whole issue of which crappy undersized undrafted free agent gets to be a clip-board holding 3rd string scout team QB and SHOOT IT IN THE HEAD!!

Posted by: p1funk | September 5, 2009 1:38 PM | Report abuse

getting exciting as we march to the openning of a 6-10 season! Of course, that 6 goes down for every offensive lineman hurt.

In the first game against the Giants, JC get's his knee blow out by Mike williams running after his blocking assignement. Todd Collins blows out his should. ARE takes over at QBm gains 300 yards running side to side. Defense plays well, but limits the blitzes because they don't want to show to much early in the season. Vinnie trades 2 first round picks to the Raiders for Jeff Garcia. Garcia stubbs his toe getting off the plane, goes through season with Turf Toe.

Danny sues his mother and children for not renewing their seat contracts.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 5, 2009 1:34 PM |

You actually do need three QBs. One of them has to run the scout team in practice. He can be from the practice squad, but you can't get by with just Collins and Campbell.

Posted by: RedSkinHead | September 5, 2009 1:34 PM

Exactly. You've got to have someone to run the scout team.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | September 5, 2009 1:36 PM |

Look at it this way. They can always scrounge around to find a PT QB to do ST. It opens up a roster spot for a shaky DB and OL.

Giants rolling with two QBs
Posted by Evan Silva on September 5, 2009 1:33 PM ET
The New York Giants have released backup QBs Andre Woodson and Rhett Bomar, meaning they'll likely carry just two quarterbacks on their Week 1 roster; $100+ million man Eli Manning and glove-wearing backup David Carr.

Neither Woodson nor Bomar, the Giants' fifth-round pick, was impressive in preseason, so their dismissals are no surprise. Both Woodson and Bomar have practice squad eligibility.

The rest of G.M. Jerry Reese's cuts so far: tight end Michael Matthews, rookie safety Sha'reff Rashad, former Penn State defensive end Maurice Evans, two-way lineman Orrin Thompson, safety Vince Anderson, defensive tackle Anthony Bryant, wide receiver Shaun Bodiford, defensive end Tommie Hill. defensive back Travonti Johnson, defensive tackle Jeremy Clark, linebacker Kenny Ingram, and offensive guard Cliff Louis.

Matthews' dismissal means that Darcy Johnson made the team.

Looks like we have started a trend.

I'm just throwing this out, how about making a pitch for Tavaris Jackson? He's young, and had a pretty decent preseason until #4 showed up. He finished last season as one of the hottest QB's in the NFL (Throwing 9 TD the last 4 games). Another plus is, he has been learning the west coast offense with Brad Childress. I feel with Zorn's tutiledge, he can mold Jackson into a real good QB. A QB with speed to run if things break down. He would make a good #2 when Collins retires, and maybe might push Campbell to either be better or cause Campbell to lose his job.

Mayor,

It looks like the ESPN guys have better sources then our own local beat guy... You might have to be downgraded to the "Councilman". You are also wrong that the Skins are in the market for a 3rd QB, they can and should carry only 2 qbs on the roster. Especially if they plan to keep 4 RBs. I say keep Aldridge, he provides a homerun threat and will work on his fumbling issues...

David Tyree CUT!

Posted by: rachel216 | September 5, 2009 2:01 PM | Report abuse

One to watch: CB DeAngelo Hall

Don't expect Hall to earn that $23 million this season.

The outspoken cornerback burned his bridges in Atlanta and Oakland, but the Redskins liked him enough after half a season to offer him a huge contract with $23 million guaranteed. Hall's coverage numbers improved when he moved from Oakland to D.C., but there are a couple of things that mark this as possible statistical white noise.

In the second half of last season (after Hall had departed), Oakland's rating in Football Outsiders' advanced defense-adjusted value of average (DVOA) metric went from 9.1 percent to minus-1.0 percent. (Remember, defensive DVOA is better when it's negative). Meanwhile, Washington had a 4.4 percent pass defense DVOA without Hall and 8.7 percent with him. When he was in Oakland, Hall faced elite passers like Jay Cutler, Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers. His four starts for the Redskins were against Joe Flacco, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Donovan McNabb and Shaun Hill, so the supposed improvement might not have been quite as significant as most people believe.

Posted by: periculum | September 5, 2009 2:04 PM | Report abuse

Trending down: RB Clinton Portis

In the first eight games of 2008, Portis led the NFL in rushing with 944 yards on 187 carries. In the second half of the season, that 5.0 yards-per-carry average plummeted to 3.5, as Portis and his offensive line struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness. The 374 carries Portis was on track for put him on the wrong side of the overload curve, and he ran for 100 yards only once in his final eight games after doing that five straight times to end the first half of the season.

When left tackle Chris Samuels was out of the lineup more often as the season went on, every element of the running game went down: total yards, adjusted line yards and effective plays in power situations. The Redskins' offensive line has many question marks right now, because the team didn't take advantage of the past two rich draft classes while age and injury eroded what they already had. In addition, on Sept. 1, Portis will turn 28, and that's the age at which most backs start falling back from the elite.

(Articles by Doug Farrar football outsiders)

One up: DE Andre Carter

The Redskins brought a subpar pass rush in 2008, ranking 29th in Football Outsiders' adjusted sack rate statistic, despite the fact that defensive coordinator Greg Blache sent six or more defenders on blitzes 14.4 percent of the time, third-highest in the league. That's why Washington paid elite tackle Albert Haynesworth $41 million in guaranteed money, and veteran end Carter could benefit immensely from that addition.

Three And Out: Redskins

NFC East blogger Matt Mosley has thoughts on the O-Line, Haynesworth's productivity and the development of a second WR. Three and Out

Though Carter had only four sacks last season, he tied for 11th in the NFL with 13 quarterback hits and tied for 12th with 13 quarterback hurries. In 2007, Carter had 10.5 sacks with tackles Cornelius Griffin and Anthony Montgomery playing more effectively than they did in 2008. Haynesworth demands at least a double-team on every play, which is something you didn't see on the Redskins' line last season. Washington is expecting a lot from first-round pick Brian Orakpo, but if he struggles, as many first-year ends do, don't be surprised if Carter picks up the slack.

Another idiot. Campbell might not be Joe Montana, but he is pretty good. Are you that stupid to see what he did vs. the Patriots' first defense as well as his first series vs. the Jags? I guess you are that impossible fan that wants their team to have impossible numbers that the Patriots can't even achieve. Slow your role. Get comfortable, Campbell is only in his 2nd yr. in this system (it has been stated that it takes AT LEAST 2.5 yr.). You can't just ride him out of town if he's not perfect overnight. Every HOF QB was never perfect overnight. A QB is only as good as the team around him. He has not been sacked this preseason (That's probably the reason he's been doing alright so far). If the OL can continue protecting with the same success, Campbell will have a breakout year. My bottom line-
If Campbell has not become a Hasselbeck like QB in his 3rd year in this system, start looking somewhere else. It took Hasselbeck 3 yr. in the same system, it took Montana 3 as well (4th being a SB year), so you can't place impossible expectations on Campbell just yet. Blame that one on the FO for crippling Campbell's development by constantly changing coaches and systems. -Just my opinion.

I should have Jason Reid's job...How much is the pay?

The Skins don't need a third string QB, they already have one playing with the first unit.
Lets looks for a first string QB.

===============================

funny....and i happen to agree. Campbell hasn't come close to proving he can lead a medicore team anywhere. he's already had a lot of chances. maybe he could quarterback a juggernaut, but not a so-so team like the redskins.

the guy can't consistently throw a short pass with accuracy. wait until that critical 3 and 6 moment - it'll be six feet over cooley's head.

I think this is an interesting development, unless of course the management is out-thinking itself.

Let's face it, if it comes down to Colt or Chase HAVING to play this season, we would be royally copulated! And if there will be an interesting guy released soon, well, why not give it a shot!

I have to say I am optimistic about this........

Why can't they just keep Chase Daniel? He looked really good at the QB position. I guess the skins can't decide who they want as QB, big surprise.

I think that we should take a shot at landing Tavaris Jackson if the price isn't to steep!!! Jackson knows his way around the West Coast Offense and has speed and arm strength and he could possibly push for the #2 job and next season compete for the starter position.

Because the Redskins, from ownership to fandom, cannot DEVELOP a star QB, becasue they don't ant to wait...

You have a first round pick, JC, who takes you to 6-2 on accurate and smart playing, and when the TEAM collapses to 8-8, everyone acts like the guy is worse than dirt. So with this mentality, you think ownership/management/fans can sit around for Chase Daniel to take them to glory land? NEVER.

Redskins need a Hall-of Fame QB who is born with a pro-bowl invitation out of his mom's uterus. Redskins need a QB who can throw 23/25 for 400 yards, 4 TD's no INT by ythe time he hits kindergarden.

If you wanna know why Redskins offense sucks, look in the mirror and hold a picture of snyderatto next to yourself

peace out

Getting rid of a class guy like Chase Daniel (who has more class than the rest of the team); suing people going through hard times when they cannot afford their tickets. This team just stinks all the way around!!

Who cares about the Redskins. The most exciting team in football - college or pro - is Ole Miss.......period.

I don't understand why the name of the column is "Redskins Insider," since there is rarely any inside information.

C'mon, you can't get this before ESPN and you cover the team?
