Daniel Appears Out at No. 3

Apparently, rookie quarterback Chase Daniel will not be the No. 3 quarterback.

We're trying to confirm a report that Daniel will not be on the roster, which really would not be a move that would surprise me. As I indicated in my last post on Brennan, there was always a possibility the team could look elsewhere to fill that spot as other quarterbacks are released today across the league.

I always thought the supposed competition between Brennan and Daniel was just the organization's attempt to light a fire under Brennan, who some felt became too comfortable after achieving cult-hero status with fans as a rookie. The bottom line is that Daniel does not appear to measure up to his 6-feet listing and short quarterbacks historically have problems in this league. Coach Jim Zorn knows a little something about the quarterback position, and I figure he doesn't think Daniel could be anything more than a No. 3 quarterback. So with Brennan out for the season, it appears the Redskins will go outside to fill the job.

Pick me for 3rd QB! Sitting is one of my best things.

They can't be too worried about this. They know there will be plenty of possibilities on the waiver wire.

Skins put Brennan on IR, to cut Daniel

ESPN.com news services
The Washington Redskins say they've decided to put quarterback Colt Brennan on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, ruling him out for the season.

The team reported on its Web site Saturday that Brennan aggravated a nagging hamstring problem during Thursday night's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Brennan and Chase Daniel spent the preseason battling for the third-string job.

Still, Daniel will not make the 53-man roster and is unlikely to be a practice squad candidate, a team source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

The Redskins plan to carry just 2 quarterbacks on the 53-man roster -- Jason Campbell and Todd Collins.

I think I like this. You have Randel-El for an emerg and you can always pick up somone if there's a long term injury. This leaves more room for another RB, OL or DB.

go with 2 qbs...need more depth elsewhere. it also gives the team some optioins as far as the rb situation goes.

Haha, he's too short.

Not gonna happen. You need to be able to stand on the sidelines while holding a clip board. Sitting just won't cut it.

Gotta have a lot of faith in our O-line to only carry two QB's...

Posted by: edvar | September 5, 2009 12:54 PM | Report abuse

you know, this would be a really really stupid move if we didn't think the offensive line was going to perform well this year. I guess the O-line has got some confidence. These are high expectations.

Still kind of sad. Smart, gutsy kid who played his heart out. Maybe the CFL or coaching. Still, with his mind and heart, wherever Chase lands he'll do well. Things worked out O.K. for Babe Laufenberg; he's now the radio voice of the Cowboys.

The Redskins **ARE** known for doing some really blatantly stupid silly things with Daniel M. Snyder in charge.

Keep in mind; Jeff George is still available and wants to play. sigh ...

Good luck with the confirmation JReid. I doubt the Redskins are none too happy with WaPo right now ...

Rachel216, Clinton Portis will have a fit if they do. If the guy takes even one carry away Portis will throw a tantrum. Alridge can't really do much on specials (he's kind of small) so he would likely just end up on the inactive list every week.

Better to look forward to Nyjer. He was in the dugout last night. After watching the latest losing streak he said he planned on being very, very determined when he comes back next year.

Posted by: periculum | September 5, 2009 1:04 PM | Report abuse

He came in and threatened Colt's job. Haha. JK, obviously the coaching staff didn't think too highly of him, he isn't even going on the practice squad.

But in all seriousness, neither would've played a snap all season. I much rather give the roster spot to Alridge. ;)

why not place Cult Brennan on PUP list. They could have postponed decision for Cult to sit out entire season in case they need him later.

PUP not available once a player goes to training camp and is on active list.

Why would we want Tarvaris Jackson? That guy looks terrible and would require a considerable amount of coaching and reps to ever be a real starter - which he won't get as a 3rd stringer. Yeah, he won some games last year, and you see where that got him...

Pass on that "project", we've got bigger fish to fry.

periculum- I saw him too in the dugout with a big smile on his face. It made me sad. We've been basically having auditions for the leadoff spot and center field, and no one does it like Tony Plush does it. I can't wait to see my favorite Nat in center field again. We need Tony Plush back to make our offense go again.

maybe they will convince the oregon running back to quit school and sign him as a free agent to cap off a great week of PR for the skins.

I like the move with Colt to IR and bye to Daneil, use ARE if you had to and this reaks of them picking up some "gem" that gets cut....

I can totally do that! I'll even wear a baseball cap, and I'm really not a hat guy. Wool cap when it's cold out, but that's it.

I can also make spastic motions with my hands should the speaker go out in Jason Campbell's helmet.

Posted by: freakzilla | September 5, 2009 1:15 PM | Report abuse

periculum isn't Sproles pretty small too? I don't think size is really as important on teams if you've got the speed to make up for it.

Posted by: trolly_time | September 5, 2009 1:16 PM | Report abuse

It makes sense.

If they don't want, him, he's gone.

If they want to hedge their bets, the move devalues him so he may be unbothered on the PS.

If campbell and Collins are both out for any period of time, the season is lost anyway.

If a vet is cut elsewhere, he can be signed as insurance against Campbell leaving after or bombing out during this season.

In the event of a body bag game, Randle El can play the B. Mitch role.

(No communications from Mr. Potter, Vinny Cerrato or Jim Zorn were received by the writer in the preparation of this speculative post.)

Posted by: TheCork | September 5, 2009 1:18 PM | Report abuse

Alridge should make this team because he's Vinny's guy and Vinny's guys make the team. Vinny won't let him go. ;)

Whoopdeedoo.

wrangling over 3rd string QBs = power rankings

Cut him and use that roster spot for a veteran backup tackle.

If both of our QBs get knocked out and can't play, you can sign Chase Daniel off the street.

It's not like he's gonna be a hot commodity out there.

If we need a 3rd QB the season is over anyway. Use that roster spot on O-line depth!!

The Chiefs just released last years starter Damien McIntosh.

Sure there is a reason he got let go, but a 9 year NFL starter is way better than our current options.

Along with the Skins players sweating out the cut to 53, the RI's own JReid must be feeling the heat as well:

1. Completely missed the boat on BMW. Said he shouldn't even be on the field.

2. Recent RI banner "Redskins Escape Preseason Unscathed". Duh. What about Carlos Rogers? Didn't play any of the preseason. Probably not ready to start the regular season. Even if he does start against the Giants he will be out of shape and unprepared. Smoot as CB replacement? Pass the maalox.

3. Completely out to lunch on the Skins carrying only 2 QBs.

Beg to differ. The smartest thing JReid has said in his career is that Mike Williams does not belong on a football field.

That will still be true even if we make the blundering error of keeping him.

You're kidding right? McIntosh has been an NFL starting tackle for the last 5 years. Williams hasn't seen real NFL game action since 2005!

McIntosh: 111 starts at tackle, at our thinnest position, since 2000. 31 starts over the last 2 years.

Williams: 48 starts, none since 2005. And he's clearly better suited at guard.

This is a no brainer.

McIntosh got toasted by a Rams scrub trying to earn a roster spot. At least BMW got beat by a first stringer. McIntosh failed the physical at the beginning of camp. He's not a good football player any more. He was cut for a reason. I don't care what he's done. It's all about what he can do in the future. He is done. BMW is not.

Posted by: PAskinsfan17 | September 5, 2009 2:38 PM | Report abuse

PAskinsfan17:

Where are you seeing all this improvement from Williams? He was seen as a bust of first round pick and he can't even break through on a weak, old, thin O-line rotation. He got beat o his sack, and he was playing guard! Is he going to be better out on an island at tackle?

McIntosh isn't the second coming of Jim Lachey, but he's a vet that could play tackle in a pinch.

I don't even care if we get McIntosh specifically, but we definitely need to pick up a veteran tackle who got lost in somebody else's numbers game. If Williams has to play tackle we're through.

Training camp-He looked like crap against undrafted FA's.

Baltimore-he looked like crap against their second team. He looked good against their third team.

Jacksonville-he looked like crap against their first team. He looked good against their second team.

The thing is that BMW is the last guy on the depth chart. He most likely will not play this year anyway. Now BMW lost a lot of weight. He is back down to his college playing weight. Once he learns how to play with his much smaller frame he'll be a pretty good tackle. He is a good run blocker. He just needs to work on his footwork and hand placement. Since he's not going to play unless we lose 2 other tackles why not keep him on the roster? by the time two of our tackles get hurt he'll figure out how to block speedy edge rushers. If he stops improving then cut him. McIntosh, Fabini, Pashos and a whole bunch of others will be available. We're talking about a 3rd string tackle here. This spot is usually used on a rookie project anyway.
