Defense still looks to help out with turnovers

Although the Redskins again are among the league leaders statistically on defense, they didn't produce enough big plays - interceptions and fumble recoveries - while going 2-5 and losing their last three games before the bye week. The defense must do more to help the offense, secondary coach Jerry Gray said, and getting more turnovers would be a good start.

"Obviously, we haven't played well enough to win the games," Gray said before practice at Redskins Park. "You look at numbers, and we have the numbers, but we don't have the numbers in areas that change games. We don't have the interceptions, the turnovers and stuff like that.

"I think if we did, then we'll be a lot better off. And you gotta go out there and do that every week. That's our big goal. We've got to get more turnovers. The ball's been on the ground but we haven't gotten 'em. It hasn't bounced our way like it has on other teams."

Cornerback DeAngelo Hall has the Redskins' three interceptions. Washington and the Seattle Seahawks are tied for last in the league in interceptions.

"We've got some guys that are playing really well. We've got some guys that are doing some good things," Gray said. "You look at Andre Carter. He's got six and a half sacks in seven games. DeAngelo, he's in the top in interceptions, so we've got some individual guys. But we think that we can get better. The obvious thing is we got to be No. 1 in defense and not just settle for a top 10."

So I guess we'll cut Renaldo Wynn and sign another backup punter again?

Its about time someone spoke up who knew something. Honestly, Snyder's biggest problem is his decision not to defend himself. There are two sides to every story, and now we've heard the other side.

Lets stop complaining and whining and hope this team can make a turnaround.

What other side did we hear? That Snyder is generous with his money? So what? That obviously doesn't win championships. No one has come out and rebutted the claim that Snyder meddles in football affairs. As long as he meddles, this team will continue to lose. End of story.

CPT Obvious.......

Coach, why don't you get somebody on defense to get a little mean. I actually miss a few accusations of ST21 spitting in another players face. Let's intimidate someone for once. Draft the Linebacker from UF!
When players are scared to cross the middle or get hit, then they will make mistakes like tip a pass, etc. That's how you get turnovers.

People trashing Ryan Howard for the 6 games they actually watched are misinformed. The Phillies lost because of starting pitching. Howard had 17 RBI's in the playoffs and was clutch in both the Colorado and Dodgers series. He never hits left handed pitching. The Yankees did their job and won the series. No surprise a Red Sox fan acts like a know it all. The same guy who complains about the Pats fans. Pot kettle and so on.

Sorry to drag this over but was too funny not to post.

I mean, Ryan Howard hit .174 for the series, but I'm misinformed for saying he gagged/choked/sucked during the WS...and you bring up what he did in the prior playoff games?? Nice job avoiding reality, please tell me how that helped his team in the world series?? He set a record for number of strike-outs, but what do I know, I'm just a sox fan.....ufb....

Blache's comments were more in response to Riggo saying that Snyder has a "dark heart".

Riggo is probably just looking for some publicity and a pay day and is just bitter that Snyder won't have him as part of the Redskins org.

He does have a "dark Heart" for putting us all through this gd misery every year. He knows he is ruining the team and he is the sole reason we are a constant joke. How could he not?

You can't get turnovers playing bend-don't-break.

The typical sox fan at that. Bet your lady-friend has a nice, new looking pink Sox hat. Or is that your hat?

Redskins lack of TO's are more a matter of poor coverage by our CB's and safeties than anything else. The fact that our free safety is playing out of position is part of the problem. He's a strong safety who is out of place and his lack of INT's is a symptom. Rogers has hands of stone so its not surprising he doesn't ever come up with INT's. Not keeping Springs as our nickel corner is looking to be a bad move, particularly when he was our best cover corner and made plays. Any INT's from Hall are generally outweighed by his poor tackling and cushion he gives to most receivers.

The ability to make big plays in the secondary has declined since the passing of S. Taylor and the injuries to Springs. The draft picks Tryon and Barnes are both projects who don't appear close to being major contributors. It's not a coincidence that the Redskins are in the bottom of the league in TO's.

The Skinz are like last in the league in takeaways, worse than last year. Wasn't the point of spending $$$ to secure players like AH and DH to have an impact on this sort of thing? Sheesh.

Having played five of the worst teams in the league, and gone 2-3 against them, I would not consider this to be a league leading defense by any stretch of the imagination. The only statistic that counts is winning percentage.
