Doughty Will Have Major Role

Even if Chris Horton starts at strong safety, Reed Doughty is expected to play a major role on defense and special teams.

"He's always been a [John] Havlicek for us," defensive coordinator Greg Blache said. "He has no problem coming off the bench, being that sixth guy, making plays, helping win ballgames, without having to a starter. The one thing we talk about here, in this day and age in the National Football League, your starters are just the first 11 guys that run out on the field. It doesn't mean that they're necessarily the most intricate portion of your whole football team. You can't function without the Reed Doughtys ... because nobody can play the whole game.

"It's not like when guys could come and play the game from start to finish at all positions. It's such a physical game that you have to have a lot of people, even on that second level and on special teams. Reed has always been a dynamic special-teams player for us. He comes in on our 'Cobra' package [three safeties] ... there are packages that we'll have Reed on the field that'll help us match up. He's a true professional. ... He's had a good camp, and we're expecting a big year from Reed. And one thing about our business, you're one play away from being a starter."

"The fact remains that Carlos was our third best corner last year and doesn't belong on anyone's top 10 list. I'm okay with the fact that we threw $ at DHall because he's a better player than Carlos. So was a healthy Shawn Springs, as Bill Belichick would tell you.

Posted by: Kenbeatrizz"

The fact remains that Carlos Rogers IS on 2 Top 10 lists from last year from football analysts paid for their opinion, that both of the supposed 'better' CBs were cut in the last year while Rogers remained a steady presence, that Rogers received more starts and snaps than either of the 'better' CBs for the #4 defense, that the Redskins actually have a winning record when Carlos Rogers starts (surprise!) and a losing record when he does not, and that when the 'better' CBs were starting over him the defense let up 47 pts against CIN and SF (two teams that finished up worse overall than the Redskins).

And I'm okay with Hall getting paid as well. Not because he's better than Rogers (which he isn't), but because this defense will be nasty with 2 top-level corners.

Good for Doughty. I remember last year a number of RI "experts" predicted Doughty would not return in 2009 after his surgery... that he wasn't really NFL-caliber.

Sounds like Blache considers him an integral part of a very good defense. But what does he know?

Wow. How did I miss that? Carlos Rogers -- he of the 6 career INT's in 4 years and appearances on 2 websites' top ten lists -- is actually the single most important piece to the Redskins puzzle. Forget signing O-linemen. Gimme 11 Carlos Rogers!!!

Ok, I officially don't give a rats butt about the Carlos Rogers vs. DHall debate, or anyone else for that matter, but didn't he have a hammy issue at the end of last year?

All this crap about him falling off late was due to some leg issue, if I remember correctly.

Of course, I wouldn't want that fact to screw up someones argument, though. I certainly wouldn't want to call an argument on factual grounds. That's not my style.

I'm a bit concerned that so far we've only got one post on the all-important 'Is Carlos Rogers Really Elite?' debate. I fully expected to see at least four long posts on the subject in every thread for the next three days. You people are falling down on the job. If you're not going to attack or defend Carlos, then who can we count on to do it?

Carry on.

Reed plays hard, one of our best guys coming off the bench.

I need help with Greg Blache.{please}
I'm not sold on GBlache's schemes. He doesn't get pressure on the Qb, because his front guys and blitz guys have hole responsibility they can't waver on and this tends to tame the rush.

What do you guys think?

I think you have a point based on last year, but not before. In Chicago he had arguably the best pressure defense in the NFL for several years running. Pressure defenses usually don't score quite as high on other defensive measures as the more containment-oriented schemes. But Chicago did extremely well, and won a number of games because of TOs produced by the defense.

Before last season, Blache said in the press that he aimed to simplify the Greg Williams model so players could be more instinctive and quicker to react. Last year was the result. I thought the squad could have benefited from some trickery, but you can't argue with Blache's overall results. That was far from the most talented defense in the NFL, but it was one of the most effective.

But they lacked pass rushers. Once the Jason experiment tanked, he was left with nobody to rush the passer, and adjusted his tactics accordingly. I'm pretty confident he was more than happy with Snyder's offseason acquisitions, and with the return of Phil Daniels, one of the toughest ends in the league.

"he of the 6 career INT's in 4 years and appearances"

The mere fact that you're basing your argument (multiple times) on his number of INTs shows just how elementary your argument is.

Do yourself a favor. Go list the top CBs in the league in terms of INTs last season, then correlate that to the ranking of their defenses. Here, I'll start it off for you. These are all the guys with more than 4 INTs on the season, in order from most INTs at the top:

Name ----------- Team Defensive Ranking

C. Woodson CB, GNB - 20th
B. McDonald CB, CLE - 26th
C. Finnegan CB, TEN - 7th
Jason David CB, NOR -23th
T. Williams CB, GNB - 20th
A. Goodman CB, MIA - 15th
D. Revis CB, NYJ -16th
DeAngelo Hall CB, OAK/WAS – 27th/4th

But go on. Continue harping that INTs are what makes a great CB. You've done a hell of a job so far.

Posted by: psps23 | August 19, 2009 4:46 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Samson151 | August 19, 2009 4:46 PM |

I agree, Samson. The whole was greater than the sum of the parts and when that happens it's the coach's accomplishment.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | August 19, 2009 4:49 PM | Report abuse

It would be better to use a 3/4 yr average vs. one year since CB's INTs can go up and down year to year.

I'll take INT's as a better measure of effectiveness than the number of snaps and top ten list appearances. But hey, if top ten list float your boat, have fun with it. Maybe you can cite some power ranking lists while you're at it.

Redskins Fan Base Declaration of 2009
______________________________________

It appears that the Redskins fan base is partially comprised of a group of "football geniuses". These football academicians are obviously wasting their lives in their current jobs!

Moreover, I think they are wasting their time even posting here because the rest of us fans are just not smart enough to understand how terrible the Redskins are for eternity!

In order to save these football geniuses' time, I suggest we all admit the following principles so to free the football geniuses to perform other scholarly football activity.

Summary of Redskin Football Status per RFKROX and other super-smart and negative posters:

1) Redskins are the worst team in the NFL forever.
2) Redskins need a new owner, a new general manager, a new head coach, a
new set of offensive and defensive coaches. They need a new QB, A new offensive line, a new set of recievers and tight ends. Redskins also need a new set of defensive players, plus a new stadium in a new city.

3) Unless #2 above is accomplished, the Redskins will have horrible seasons forever.

4) Redskins are worst than all other NFL teams

5) All other NFL teams have better owners, coaches and players

6) Anybody who ever hope that the Redskins will have any success is devoid of any football acumen.

As the representative for football-dumb Redskins fans, I admit that above information is forever true. We worship the ground where the football geniuses consume large amounts of brew daily.

Based on the above admission, I ask the football geniuses not to waste their time on these boards anymore. They should start consulting other fan bases and enlighten them on a daily basis regarding how inadequate their teams are. Redskins are a lost cause, so why bother?

We have also asked the Redskins gestapo to stop holding a gun to people's head to force them be a Redskins fan.

Effective immediately, all football geniuses are thereby relieved from their state-sponsored duties to be a Redskins fan. This is true, I am not kidding. Nobody is going to be sued if they stop being Redskins fan. Moreover, people are also free not to watch the games on TV or go the stadium!! I am absolutely not making this up guys!

You all have the freedom to adore Wade Phillips and Tom Brady. Hell, you guys can even date them, both, at the same time. Feel free to take along your family too!
