Fletcher Praises Young

One of my guys on the team told me I really should speak with middle linebacker London Fletcher about rookie linebacker Darrel Young, who is in the mix for the 53rd spot on the opening roster.

The Redskins signed Young as an undrafted free agent from Villanova, and he has impressed coaches and players with understanding of the game and strong work ethic. In fact, my guy told me Young reminded him of a young Fletcher, and Fletcher agreed.

"I see a lot of potential in him," he said. "I see a lot of me in him."

Since minicamp, Young has surprised many of his veteran teammates with how quickly he "absorbs everything," Fletcher said. "He pays attention in the meeting room, he watches film, [and] he asks questions. Each week, he's gotten better in the areas he needed to improve on.

"Obviously, it's a jump for him coming from Villanova to the NFL. But he has done the things to get himself noticed to make the team as a special teams linebacker."

Young helped himself in Thursday's 24-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. On the game's opening kickoff, Young beat everyone on the coverage team down the field and wrapped up Rashad Jennings at the 23-yard line.

"I think I put myself in a better position than I was," Young said. "I tried to make the coaches' decision a little harder."

Special teams coach Danny Smith has been complimentary in his assessment about Young, who understands what his role would be if he makes the 53-man roster.

"London ain't coming out, Rocky McIntosh ain't coming out, and they just drafted [Brian] Orakpo, and he ain't coming out," Smith said. "You've got guys in those positions. I'm just trying to help the team in any way I can on special teams. It's an important part of the game."

This is the first time I'm first, so I have to say "first!!"

"I see a lot of me in him."

Automatic keeper!!! Coming from London, this is high praise for Young.

Oh good SkinzFanzz,

I feel much better now. I'll think of you when we need to make a stop on 3rd down late in the game.

Posted by: Dorf | September 4, 2009 6:10 PM | Report abuse

....I believe Zorn, like Gibbs, has a mental block regarding how to call plays. I believe he overthinks it while the defenses just play to our weaknesses.

I believe going from 6-2 to 2-6 could be partially balmed on play-calling. Like there is a"quota" to be met. We are down 14 points, there is 7 minutes left, it's 2nd and 8: please either pass or call a trick play. There is no shame in calling 5 passes in a row if that is what is needed. Using run to set up the passing game is a historical consideration. it doesn't fool any one south of Detroit.

Posted by: peaceful2008 | September 4, 2009 6:02 PM

++++++++++++++++
Agreed.

Along with the offensive line falling apart last year, I got the distinct impression that the 0pposition knew exactly what we were going to run, and when we were going to run it. Zorn was sticking too closely to the "Bible of the WCO"--when it called for a draw, he'd always run a draw. When it called for a screen, that's what you'd see.

More variety and 'nonconformity' will be needed this year, to keep the defenses on their toes. If Zorn doesn't branch out away from the 'Bible' more this year, then I'm afraid we're gonna see a lot of last year repeated.

On a good note, I think we are already seeing major changes via the increased emphasis on downfield passing. Hope that is a harbinger of good things to come.

Less predictability. More trickery.

Peace coming at you, straight from the underground....

Can someone educate me about what is wrong with the QB stepping back and rolling to one side or the other? It seems that would allow bringing more help on one side and the time for the receiver to run down field. Rypien made a career out of it. I see Brady do it all the time. It appears to me to fit JC quite well. Is it the curse of WCO that prohibits it? Help?

(reaching for the third Corona....stumble...)

Posted by: peaceful2008 | September 4, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

The defense on third down worries me a bit. We need to sure that up especially when it's 3rd & long, we seem to have trouble with that. The penalties extending drives are annoying. I really hope Carlos is ready to go cuz we need him.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 4, 2009 6:15 PM | Report abuse

Smurff says:

"Less predictability. More trickery."

Agree absolutely. in 1991, Redskins had the power to stand there and run/pass at will. They could run to set up the pass all weekend long. In 2009, I think we need to freshen up a little. We don't have the "talent" advantage" over many teams. We need the "mental advantage" from great coaching. JustMHO

Posted by: peaceful2008 | September 4, 2009 6:18 PM | Report abuse

rachel,

The best way to shore up the 3rd down defense is to have a mentality of "turnover". That is going to get us far. Sure, the offense can burn you from time to time, but if you play aggressively to take the ball away on every down, good things are going to happen.

I'm thinking about the Star Wars VII link that alex35332 posted.

This is a conversation between me and Blache.

Greg: "So what's your pitch?"

Dorf: "I was thinking... of NOT blitzing on 3rd down."

Greg: "That's great! Blitz more people on 3rd down!"

Dorf: "No, not really. Instead of blitzing on every 3rd and long situation why not just play tight coverage and make sure they don't get a 1st down... you know, mix it up a bit."

Greg: "Oh my... (Greg falls out of his chair)

The Chiefs recently released their starting right tackle, McIntosh. What are the chances we pick him up?

Excerp from PFT.com
The biggest surprise is McIntosh, an eight-year starter who was due to make $2.2 million this year. He started 16 games last year at right tackle for the Chiefs, and he has been a regular starter at left and right tackle since 2001 for the Chargers and Dolphins, too.

In all, McIntosh has starter 111 career games.

Because he's a vested veteran, he instantly becomes a free agent, and he likely won't be out of work for long.

Comment: McIntosh anchors the right side of the Chiefs' line and gives the team a powerful drive blocker who excels in short-yardage situations. He is more of a finesse blocker who walls opponents off and simply gets in the way. He reacts quickly to stunts and twists. He is a solid technician who understands angles and how to position himself.

Scouts 2009 capsule -- Washington Redskins

Offense

Head coach Jim Zorn is a disciple of the West Coast offense, but he seems to be making adjustments in Washington to fit his personnel. As a result, we may continue to see more runs than passes behind a big, zone-blocking front five. When the Skins do throw the ball, it will be in a short, rhythm passing game with a lot of horizontal routes off three- and five-step drops, allowing for a variety of low-risk passes. That should lead to limited turnovers and, with the ball out so quickly, it's hard for pass-rushers to get to the quarterback.

However, how will QB Jason Campbell play knowing that his coaches and front office were willing to trade him whenever a big-name quarterback became available in the offseason? It can't give him a lot of confidence heading into the last year of his contract. The young signal-caller still seems to have the support of his teammates and is talented but inconsistent. (In his defense, Campbell has played in seven different offensive systems in the last eight years.)

This offense may not be overly explosive in 2009, but its principles are solid, and the Redskins should move the chains without a lot of turnovers. There are questions on whether Zorn has the full support of his players, and he is thought of as having a little bit of an unorthodox coaching style, but another year with this system and offensive staff continuity should help. However, this pass offense needs more of a vertical presence and it must try to keep defenses on their heels and not be so predictable.

Scouts 2009 capsule -- Washington Redskins

Defense

Coordinator Greg Blache preaches a tough, physical style of 4-3 defense with aggressive pressure up front and a lot of tight man-to-man schemes behind it. The Redskins want pressure and penetration by their front four, and they will even keep a safety in the box to help create that pressure.

Ironically, this isn't a sack-oriented defense, but Blache wants his defensive line to be not only disruptive, but also eat up blockers, while the linebackers flow to the ball and make most of the plays. This style of defense puts the corners on an island at times, in man coverages with limited blitzing, but the roles for the players are well-defined. Even with new addition Albert Haynesworth, however, there are concerns the pass rush won't produce a lot of big plays.

Things are much better on the back end, with good depth in the secondary -- safeties who have range and corners who can turn and run in man. This is a solid matchup pass defense, and the Skins can get into their sub packages without a lot of worries. There is a strong feeling among the coaches that the improvements up front and the ability to cover on the back end will keep the Redskins in games and overcome a suspect offense.

Blache will be challenged to find the best ways to utilize his prize free agent, Haynesworth, and top draft pick, DE Brian Orakpo, but this fourth-rated NFL defense from a year ago should be as good or better in 2009.

That's not "gumption." It's the path of least resistance.

I would rather have seen them suspend him indefinitely, with the possibility of rejoining the team when/if he makes convincing changes in his attitude/anger control. This would encourage him to solve his issues, and the school -- an educational institution -- would be fulfilling it's mission. As is, they're just passing his problems on to someone else.

I'd keep both Henson and Young and drop the running backs ... Sellers is one he plays on the specials.

Zorn will be most effective with the short pass to guys like Cooley, Davis and Betts.

Special teams and defense getting field position will be critical to this offense. Linebackers look to be more valuable.

Posted by: peaceful2008 | September 4, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

When you roll to one side you cut the field of play in half - makes it easier for the defense to react and close down.

The D automatically know that play/throw is going to go to whichever side the QB rolls; unless the QB is a pussmuffin and decides to throw across himself back to the far side of the field, in which case the pass can easily get picked off.

...I think I'll have a Corona myself...excuse me for a moment...

Don Banks on CNNSI:

"Last place: Washington (5-11) -- With a tenacious defense that will keep them in most games, the Redskins won't look like a last-place team for much of the season. But that's where they'll end up because offensively they scare almost no one. Even winless Detroit scored more than Washington's 265 points last season, and only a quantum leap from fifth-year quarterback Jason Campbell changes that dynamic. And that's if a shaky Redskins offensive line can give him enough time to survive in the pocket."

a) Creedence Clearwater Revival

8) If Skins have a winning record but miss the playoffs, should Jim Zorn be fired?

a) Yes- Too much talent on this team to miss the playoffs, only concern is oline depth and teams with worse olines than us did just fine last year. A top 5 D should have had us in last year miss them again its for one of two or two reasons poor adaptation to your personnel by the coaches and/or poor QB play, both of which fall on Zorn as he is the HC, OC, and QB coach.

Speaking of Phil Silvers, my wife and I watched "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" for the several-eth time a couple of weeks ago. A seriously great comedy.

My favorite part is always the scene where Jonathan Winters destroys the garage in a fit of rage, with Marvin Kaplan and Arnold Stang as the garage attendants trying to subdue him. Phil Silvers isn't in this particular scene, but he does instigate the whole scenario.

Okay, so this was a surprise to everyone, but here's a killingly funny line from Don Bank's 2008 predictions for the Miami Dolphins:

"Miami (5-11) -- Rock bottom was reached last year, and that means the onetime playoff perennial Dolphins are on their way back. But nobody goes worst to first in the AFC East. The Fish will be bigger, and play tougher and smarter. That's enough progress for '08."

the poll:

1. Mitchell - At least Vinny always has a sleeper (Horton too).

2. Coaching - Not with the offense... I think we have weapons on offense now & the O-line is just fine, I just don't want Mike Williams on the field anytime soon, but Bridges could fill in nicely for an injured player. The problem is GREG BLACHE... I said it... I'm tired of the corners playing soft letting the receivers release off the line of scrimage which leads to many 3rd down conversions... We have a stud pass rush now & they should be bump & run all the way with a safety over the top especially when the heat is coming. Jim Johnson would leave 0 coverage (no safety) with eveyone blitzing... you gotta bring it sometimes & make the QB make a quick decision.

3. A/B - JC & the young guys are going to help our team this year... it is clear that Kelly & Mitchell will add a new dimension near the goal line... Thomas will step up because he will have no choice, otherwise he will slip down the depth charts with Mitchell right behind him. I would like to see a no backfield set of Kelly, Mitchell, Moss, Davis, & Cooley on the field together a couple times per game.

4. Stephon Heyer... He is the reason JC hasn't had any sacks this preseason, honestly the o-line has been much better than advertised... I really think only question mark is Williams. Other guys have been solid that will be here after tomorrow.

5. Kelly - He looks like the real deal, good size & great hands, never lets the ball hit his body.

6. A/B - I GUARANTEE WE WILL BE BETTER THAN 6-10 MR KING... HE MAKES ME ANGRY... GO F BILL BELICHICK OR HOWEVER THE F YOU SPELL HIS NAME.

We as 'skins fans though sometimes overhype the team.

7. AC/DC - Verizon Center... I know, it's not listed.

8. No - fire the defensive coordinator... see above. A big name coach isn't going to put forth the effort of this coaching staff. I really think sky is the limit in the future if our offense could stay together now that the weapons are in place... just keep drafting O-line & a future feature back & we should be good for a long time.

I actually think we should keep Mike Williams. Remember...he's not a starter. I bet by week 6 he could fill in for someone.

Maybe yes and maybe no. Hard to tell from what little we've seen on TV. But, if you can't trust Joe Bugel's judgment on this, why bother to be a Redskins fan?

I would rather have seen them suspend him indefinitely, with the possibility of rejoining the team when/if he makes convincing changes in his attitude/anger control. This would encourage him to solve his issues, and the school -- an educational institution -- would be fulfilling it's mission. As is, they're just passing his problems on to someone else.

Interesting take on it TE. I would have to agree to disagree with you on this one though. I do not believe it is the role of the school to teach behavior modification. Just as a certain minimum score on college entrance exams is required, I believe a certain minimum level of conduct is too. Both players were talking but only one assaulted another. Football and College are not rights of birth, they are a privelege and as such require better behavior. IMHO of course.

Okay, A to D, on the terms of suspension. But, we do agree on this sentence, and that is why I would go with "suspend indefinitely." Both require better behavior, so when the boy has demonstrated he can meet the school's standards then I would let him play football again.

BTW, I was exactly where you are -- permanent suspension -- until Lou Holtz visited me on ESPN last night and made the case for indefinite suspension.

Seems like most people missed the part of the "suing old ladies" WaPo article that stated the Redskins filed 125 law suits. Out of those 125, only 34 actually went to court because those people either didn't respond to their summons or refused to negotiate with the Redskins.

So .01% of season ticket holders lost law suits to the Redskins because they refused to negotiate. Why is this even a story?

Today feels like some weird reverse christmas morning....waiting for the list of people who get fired. That said, I am excited to see how it shakes out.
