Gibbs isn't likely to be in the mix

There has been speculation for this season that former team president and coach Joe Gibbs might return again in some high-ranking position, or even as a Redskins minority owner, if owner Daniel Snyder initiated a major front-office shakeup.

As soon as word emerged this morning that Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, unexpectedly resigned, Gibbs's name quickly became part of the buzz at Redskins Park. Well, Gibbs still is focused on his racing team and other interests, according to an email from a source close to Gibbs.

When word first emerged weeks ago about the Gibbs possibly returning to the organization, the same source stressed he did not envision that ever happening again. "Nothing had changed on his front with regard to that," the source emailed.

So, at least for now, remove Gibbs's name from your scorecard. Obviously, the situation remains extremely fluid, and we'll provide more information as soon as we can confirm things.

It figures to be a very interesting and long day.

BRUCE ALLEN HIRED

Posted by: 4thFloor | December 17, 2009 9:44 AM | Report abuse

980 just said Bruce Allen has been hired.

Posted by: Flounder21 | December 17, 2009 9:44 AM | Report abuse

This dude any good? And who would he bring in as Coach? Shanny?

Posted by: FedorEm | December 17, 2009 9:44 AM | Report abuse

Greg on the last post I listed all Bruce Allen led drafts I'm not sure if he was in charge all 9 years in Oakland though.

Posted by: Flounder21 | December 17, 2009 9:45 AM | Report abuse

You guys are going to nail me to the wall for this I'm sure, but I hope VC stays with us as a talent scout. As a friend of mine says, his problem wasn't evaluating talent, it was over paying. I say let him find some great players, which he has unquestionably done over the past couple of years - and let a GM confirm those talents and handle acquisition. This has a 0% chance of happening of course, someone else will probably hire VC as a GM.

Posted by: REXskins | December 17, 2009 9:45 AM | Report abuse

"La Canfora just said that it's Bruce Allen with Shanahan."

I trust this.

M Shanahan will be coaching in DC next Fall.

And Jimmy Clausen will be the starting quarterback.

And we will get an offensive line.

This means the Vinny v. Danny divorce was over his wanting it his way versus Dan's way.

And Dan owns the team.

So now, big name, shiny object, and major changes in place.

There's no stability like redskins' stability where constant change can always be expected.

Posted by: MistaMoe | December 17, 2009 9:45 AM | Report abuse

I was thinking the same thing, but didn't he and Gruden get held back because the Glazer's didn't want to spend money on the players they wanted?

Posted by: TWISI | December 17, 2009 9:40 AM

True true....But as Flounder just posted previously....His Tampa drafts were TERRIBLE...and that has nothing to do with spending $$$...

But his Raiders drafts was really really nice...

Posted by: 4thFloor | December 17, 2009 9:45 AM | Report abuse

Is Bruce Allen's record for player personnel moves really that much better than Cerrato's?

Posted by: saltine182 | January 22, 2009 9:29 PM

I'm glad to see Cerrato gone - but this is a valid question. I'm also wondering if this is another "buddy" hire. Snyder gets a guy from a family that he's close to.

I guess time will tell how this all plays out. As fans, we'll know a lot more about how things will go in April.

Posted by: Kev29 | December 17, 2009 9:46 AM | Report abuse

Wow just wow! Merry Christmas, sports fans.

Posted by: SMACK1 | December 17, 2009 9:46 AM | Report abuse

Its another Festivus MIRACLE! Oh wait, Bruce Allen sucks!

Posted by: trezmartin | December 17, 2009 9:47 AM | Report abuse

Slow down folks.... Let's hope Danny doesn't just hire "a football guy" because he's famous and available. That's the approach that failed in the past (Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, Jeff George, Ray Rhodes, Marvin Lewis, Schott, Spurrier, I could go on all day). I fear that some of the names being batted around, like Wolf, Holmgren or even Shanahan fall in that category. Wolf hasn't been a personnel guy for years, and Holmgren and Shanahan are lousy personnel guys. There is a reason none of those men is with a team right now.

No, just hiring a smart football guy is not the answer. Hire THE RIGHT FOOTBALL GUY, one who is hard working, innovative, who shares your vision for the team you want to build, is driven by success and not just money, who will stick it out for the long haul, and who you can get along with on a personal level so we don't have another Schottenheimer "one and done" year.

Posted by: jksesq1 | December 17, 2009 8:40 AM | Report abuse

I have to agree with you, jksesq1. We need someone who is #2 at a very successful front office operation, someone who is younger than Holmgren. I'm not totally opposed to Holmgren, but would prefer someone who is younger. ANd we need someone who is familiar with contracts and cap management.

THE RAIDERS ARE AWFUL.

Not that I pay that close attention to other team's drafts, but how could they possibly have been good?

I CAN'T FRICKIN BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE UP HERE ARE COMPLAINING!!!!

ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?!

VINNY CERRATTO JUST GOT FIRED AND PEOPLE ARE WETTING THE BED ABOUT WHETHER BRUCE ALLEN HAD GOOD DRAFTS?!??!?!

WHAT DO YOU WANT????? JESUS CHRIST TO BE HIRED AS GM; THE PROHPEHT MOHAMMED TO BE HEAD COACH; AND MOSES AS DIRECTOR OF PLAYER PERSONNEL????

in other news, McShay in his first mock draft has us taking Bradford at 7, with Suh going #1 and Okung #5 to KC.

It cant be bad unless he becomes another yes man. but he has the title of GM, not prez etc...

Posted by: League-Source | December 17, 2009 9:50 AM | Report abuse

Bruce Allen? Wiki says he is George Allen's son, so there is a link to Redskins history. So, is he with Gruden or Shanahan, or neither?

Posted by: RedSkinHead | December 17, 2009 9:51 AM | Report abuse

I thought Holmgren was going to Cleveland?

Posted by: memyselfI1 | December 17, 2009 9:51 AM | Report abuse

Bruce Allen worked with davis for 9 years, he should get a medal for that. He is no yes man.

Posted by: Flounder21 | December 17, 2009 9:51 AM | Report abuse

"PFT is reporting that his first order of business as GM of the Redskins, Bruce Allen plans on trading Ladell Betts for a 2nd rounder, and bringing back Leigh Torrence"

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | December 17, 2009 9:51 AM | Report abuse

If you don't think Bruce Allen is light years ahead of Ceratto as an overall GM you nutz.

Also even if their record is mixed, I am MORE than willing to give someone else a shot at this.

Quick name another GM/Coach combo who has succeeded with the Raiders in the last 25 years? I mean they were one horrible call away from the SB, and

You are a FOOL.

When Bruce Allen was in Oakland the Raiders were a perennial NFL powerhouse who were legitimately contending for a Superbowl berth.

AND Allen was able to do that while fending off the perenially insane Al Davis.

This is a GREAT move.

Unlike Vinny, Bruce Allen is:
1) widely respected around the league
2) won't be a Danny-boy yes-man
3) has proven his ability to be a successful GM

Dude....The Raiders were GOOD back in the late 90s early until he left one year after Gruden left.

The went to a SB....Drafte Namdi...Woodson...The Tuck game changed that team's path. But the Raiders were GOOD under Allen.

Some donkey posted that in speculation about 45 minutes ago - before 980 even said a word about it.

What's funny is that the news is flying fast and furious. I wonder how old man Kornheiser is going to keep up with all this.

Posted by: Kev29 | December 17, 2009 9:52 AM | Report abuse

"Ugh, NO to Clausen."

Agreed.

I have no desire to sit through three to four years of watching some kid get tutored into being an NFL quarterback after just watching Jason Campbell go through it.

Take what you have with Campbell, build on it, and move forward.

Posted by: MistaMoe | December 17, 2009 9:52 AM | Report abuse

skin head, shanahan wants gm too... he is going to dallas.

So either chuky is coming out of the booth, or it will be a young assistant, i would guess

Posted by: Zeebs | December 17, 2009 9:53 AM | Report abuse

I think its a great fit! Bruce knows the franchise, knows the importance of the team to the area, knows the expectations, he was able to get the Raiders to the Super Bowl with Al Davis, I think he's a great hire! if Gruden comes with him, great, but I've also read a couple of places that Shanahan is still the guy....

Posted by: zjfr2 | December 17, 2009 9:53 AM | Report abuse

its official Bruce Allen is Executive VP and GM.

On a sad note. Chris Henry just passed.

Prayers to his family and to the Bengals fans.

Well, if chucky is the new coach look to keep campbell, draft claussen, then draft pike, and bring chase daniel back. Chucky loves his QBs.

Some of you are proving to be morons...you dont know bruce allen is G. Allen's son?????

You don't know that he and Gruden helmed the Raiders when they were last good and it crumbled within 12 months of their departure???

You don't know that a talking hand puppet is an upgrade over Ceratto....

There should be nothing but joy right now...wow...just wow.

Posted by: chrislarry | December 17, 2009 9:55 AM | Report abuse

Question:

How much control does Allen really have, if Shannahan is already in line for the HC job?

We'll see...

The wiki says he was the Bucs GM from 2004 to 2008.

LOOK at the Bucs. Just LOOK AT THEM. They have no talent, no coaching, what the hell are you talking about with this guy being good.

No GM over a 4 year period has built a WORSE team than the Bucs that I know of.

You can look at past performance, I'll look at recent performance. Which do you think will be a better indicator of future performance?

Allen/Shananhan/Blache or Gray I like this combination.

You people who are so high on Shanahan need to say why! All he did was ride it out with Elway, Terrell Davis and Tony Kubiak as his OC. When these 3 left, the team tanked.

He's a horrid HC with a rep for playing dirty, and if he's the other half of this equation, it's not good news. To me, anyway.

I'd like to see Zorn keep his job and see if Allen can fix some problems like the O-Line. Keep Campbel too. Lets try stability for a change. But, if it is a forgone conclusion that Zorn is gone I would want to give the job to Russ Grim, who knows the importantce of the O-Line. Give Gibbs a Parcells type of job as well. Good news today. Things are looking better.
