Injury news: Samuels, Smith, Haynesworth, Portis

Pro bowl left tackle Samuels, expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the season because of a neck injury, participated in a team photo today at Redskins Park.

"I haven't talked to him," Zorn said. "I don't know any more quite yet."

Samuels earlier this week traveled to California to consult with a specialist. He has not played since suffering the injury during the Redskins' first possession in a 20-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 11. The 10-year veteran is strongly considering retirement, a league source said. ...

Punter Hunter Smith (groin) performed well during practice and should be ready to roll Monday against the Philadelphia Eagles, Zorn said.

"It was awesome," Zorn said of Smith's punting. "He leaped up in the air to chest-bump our trainer, and I just about lost my breath. I'm going, 'What are you doing?' He felt real good. He had a real good workout. I'm confident that we're going to get everything we need to get out of him Monday night."...

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (ankle) and running back Clinton Portis (ankle) are expected to play against the Eagles.

yuh okay.

Here's how it looks to me: the team spent the week talking about everything except the Philadelphia Eagles. That's not as bad as it could be; they know the Eagles as well as any opponent. Philly, meanwhile, is coming off an embarrassing loss to the mighty Raiders, a team whose QB completes less than half his passes. They'll be looking to take it out on Washington.

So far, the only folks to profit from this mess are Sally Jenkins and Tracee Hamilton, who got invites to serve as guest producers on the Jerry Springer anniversary show.

Who knows? Maybe a football team will show up Monday. Let's hope they're not wearing green.

One can only dream of the day in which a Redskins will not "need" to get the most out of a punter.

So, Portis was too injured to practice this week, but he is well enough to play... hmmmm. Every week it is the same thing with this guy. I cannot believe they let him get away with it. How do the other players feel about that? Take a guy like Rhinehart who was hurt, but could have played, but they made him a game day inactive last week because he couldn't practice.

A guy left 2 Redskins tickets on his windshield.

When he got back to his car after work, his windshield was smashed, and there were 8 tickets on his front seat.

What If Football was like the WWE Wrestling?

Sherm Lewis and Vinny Cerrato race to the sideline to confront Jim Zorn as to why he is changing all of Sherm Lewis's plays to run left with Chad Rhinehart as the Running Back. As Sherm and Vinny stand nose to nose yelling at Jim, all of a sudden Steve Largent comes running out of the crowd and places a knee into Vinny Cerrato's back. Jim Zorn then proceeds to beat down Sherm Lewis. After the viscious beating, Jim Zorn and Steve Largent pose over the unconscience bodies of Vinny and Sherm. They then rip off their shirts to reveal Philadelphia Eagles Clothes! They then run to mid field and embrace Andy Reid as the TV Screen fades to black.

"Seeking to douse the raging fires of speculation, rumor and the uninformed guesswork of 'unnamed sources,' the Redskins went to the well for a bucket of clarity concerning questions about coach Jim Zorn’s job security this season."

"Bucket of clarity"?? The Redskins can't even find good PR writers, let alone coaches or players. I could have come up with better metaphors than that when I was in 3rd Grade.

Posted by: acoberst1 | October 23, 2009 3:12 PM

Agreed.

In the 3rd grade, I'd have written, "The Redskins today cut through all of the media noise surrounding the future status of head coach Jim Zorn, like Voltron's blazing sword slicing through a ro-beast."

Having Portis on this time is like having your mother-in-law live with you.

You may not like her very much, but every once in a while, she is helpful around the house.

Dump him...now

Posted by: Lisa_R | October 23, 2009 4:27 PM

First, Portis has had this non-practice arrangement going for him most of the time he has been here3, starting in 2005 I believe under Gibbs. Which was before he had done much to prove himself.

Secondly, should athletes get a pass year in and year out based on perceptions of what they have done for their team? Not all coaches would agree with that - apparently Zorn can't change it even if he doesn't agree with it.

You have players that do this all of the time. You weren't complaining when Pete Kendall did it all of last year were you? Don't compare Portis to Rhinehart either. Rhinehart was inactive because he sucks. It doesn't matter if he's healthy or not.

Go Zorn! The guy could call plays when we had an decent O-line last year and was 6-2. When the line got hurt we went 2-6. When Vinny didn't upgrade we went 2-4.
