Coach Jim Zorn finally made it official after practice, announcing that second-year wide receiver Malcolm Kelly is the new starting flanker opposite split end Santana Moss.
I'll have more on this development shortly.

Gee, who'd have thunk that showing some patience with first year players could actually pay off??

If your were exspecting a new number two reciver well think again it tho old one Randle el at least according to the projected line up on Redskins .com. So once again we wer lied to they said that he would be a slot reciver and one of the younger recivers would be nuimber two but once again the evil spector of special teams will leave the yonger players,Kelly thomas and Mitchell sitting on the bench

Leaving in the same mess that we were in last year and we will be o-16 because if it

Even the article he referenced made it seem like Zorn was going to start one of the other guys. The article just said Zorn didn't know and it depended on field position but all 3 would be getting signficant playing time.

Lemme splain it to you beanboy. The only reason he got it together is because we rode him so hard last year. Patience is for babies. This is the NFL. If we'd been patient with him, he would still be complaining about a sore knee. We made a man out of him. No patience on RI, and this just proves that it doesn't work.

This is why Jim Zorn has so many question marks about him as a HC. Yes, Kelly should be named starter. BUT ... he should have been named the starter 2 weeks ago. That would have allowed Campbell and the 3 top WRs to do a better job of getting in synch with each other.

This is REALLY IMPORTANT to this team. Kelly and Campbell need to develop this rapport. Zorn could have helped this process along by naming his starters and having them get the bulk of the work in practice and games. This mixing and matching WRs stuff made no sense to me. If the Skins passing looks out of synch vs the jints -- its on Zorn.

fwiw -- I don't have much respect for Mangini's similar "I'm not gonna tell you who my starting QB is" game either.

Posted by: freakzilla | September 9, 2009 3:50 PM | Report abuse

tard, cl, right?

From the Times:

If the Redskins open with a multi-receiver formation against the New York Giants on Sunday -- a very likely proposition -- Malcolm Kelly will be the starter opposite Santana Moss.

This isn't a surprise considering Kelly had a strong preseason and Zorn really wanted Kelly or Devin Thomas to assert themselves and beat out Antwaan Randle El.

Kelly became that guy.

"He's gone all training camp really improving along the way," Zorn said. "His overall explosion off the line of scrimmage has been very good and he's working at trying to be the starting receiver. I can't tell you everybody stepped back and watched him go but we're going to give him the opportunity to be out there and hit it."

Randle El will continue to get plenty of playing time, though.

"I think I said this earlier -- you're going to think Antwaan Randle El is the starter as well because they're all going to be involved in the game plan," Zorn said.

Best line is about how he's going to use EVERYONE.....

Thomas will probably need another year. He played a step up from sandlot football at Michigan State. He didn't really have to do much more than run towards the end zone. Now he has to learn short/intermediate routes, getting off the line, blocking, and body positioning. Kelly on the other hand played on a more sophisticated offense and already knew a lot of that stuff. I think Thomas will have the better career but he'll be slower to take off. I'd let him return punts this year and keep developing him in practice.

zjfr2:

Batiste is playing out of position at T, and from what I saw of his play there - "No, no, a thousand times no." He was out played consistantly kinda' like BIG MIKE in his first x-game. But I also saw extensive work by BATISTE at LG where he was passable. The problem is we just don't have anyone else with JEREMY BRIDGES cut, and REUBAN RILEY and DEVIN CLARK gone with knee miseries. No choice in other words. Could there have been a choice with a third rounder picked instead of KEVIN BARNES? That becomes the crux of the issue. The offense was sacrificed to rebuild the defense, and its gonna' hurt this year. The management needs to take a more even hand where draft choices are concerned. BTW, I do believe HENSON will be a servicible backer in time.

Marvin Harrison just knotted his loose end:

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—A Philadelphia man who accused former Indianapolis Colts receiver Marvin Harrison(notes) of shooting him has died from wounds sustained in another shooting.

Philadelphia police say Dwight Dixon died Friday. Dixon, 33, had been hospitalized since being wounded multiple times by an unknown shooter in July.

Dixon was convicted in January of lying to police about the earlier shooting, which happened April 28, 2008. His lawyers say Dixon initially did not say Harrison shot him because he was afraid of him.

Investigators determined that a gun owned by Harrison was used in that shooting but declined to file charges because of conflicting accounts of who pulled the trigger.

The Colts released Harrison in February. He remains a free agent.

Posted by: REDneckSKINhead | September 9, 2009 4:08 PM | Report abuse

Big difference in saying who the starting QB is vs the flanker WR.

1st off a QB has to be on the field for every offensive play. 2. A WR can be brought out/in and be moved into different spots in different packages. QB's play 1 position for the most part, save wildcat. 3. WR's can change "order" game to game, and this is normal depending on things like age and knowlage of the system. Kelly is no 2 right now but Thomas may become no 2 week 3 or ARE may get it. Who knows. 4. Why tell the giants 2 weeks ago, give them less time to focus on Kelly as the no 2 guy.

That dude went from most TDs scored in a season to no one not even bringing him in for a look during the offseason. I think the Bengals may have been the only team.

To date, the 'skins are the only dummies to officially put him on a roster. Of course, if they would have kept Marcus Mason last year they wouldn't had to.

Damn, talk about a dude who was a ultimate benefactor of running behind good linemen his whole career.

I also have a PC question to ask: somebody referred to Malcolm as "Brother Malcolm" up here a few days ago, and while I love that moniker and would like to use it, it does seem a mite disrespectful to the original... can I get a ruling from the judges?

Happy to go with "MK12" if need be, but I'm so happy the kid's healthy and starting that I want him to have a right proper handle.

This move will prove to pay huge dividends this season. Malcolm Kelly is big bodied and has good hands.

Drafting two tall pass catchers in 2008 was a smart move by the FO. As skins fans we are to eager to rebuild the entire team all at once.

Quit whining about the O-line, it will be addressed next season. For right now we have a formidable defense, alot of pass catching weapons, a stud running back and an improved punting game.

The Redskins are being looked over by morons like Peter King in his predictions, which is fine with me. Add some more fuel to the fire Peter.

I also repeatedly bashed Thomas and so far he has done nothing to change my mind, just because Kelly has looked good doesn't mean that Thomas has. The best thing he's done all preseason is return some kicks well.....They were linked way too much together in the past and they shouldn't be linked now, Kelly has gotten on the field looked good and is our #2, Thomas has been out shined big time by a 7th round rookie and is in danger of falling to the 5th spot on the depth chart if he doesn't snap out of his apparent mental lapses, don't go calling him a success story yet....

one question, what about a #4 overall defense suggests it needed to be "rebuilt"....I didn't and still don't disagree with the Haynesworth and Hall signings or the Orakpo pick, but it should have stopped there, that's 3 playmakers to an already very solid unit and other depth issues could be signed cheap or found with UFA the entire draft after Orakpo should have been offense, IMO two tackles, a center, a scat back and a receiver.....liked the Marko pick when they did it, like it more now, and that was it....if Edwin Williams pans out then the center pick was irrelevant but still would have liked oline....

z, sometimes I just don't get what planet you're from.....can you quantify the difference this would have made from 2 weeks ago, up until now?

Posted by: BeantownGreg1

Yes I can. it'd be two weeks more work in the roles that they'll be playing in a game. 3 weeks in total, vs 1 week, to prepare for the season.

Of note, in preseason, you get to be more focused on the basics. In the regular season, you are focused on the team you play next.

Watch the 2 end zone throws from Campbell to Kelly vs NE. Not good. They have plenty of work they need to do together, in practice and in games.

Thanks, Red. (Speaking of which, didn't Malcolm X have the nickname "Red" at some point early in his life?)

I'll look to jm220 for an answer. If he's cool with it, I'm going with "Brother Malcolm" for our young Mr. Kelly.

MK12 is OK as an alternative, I guess. But it's too short for such a tall man.

despite starting through the preseason kelly had 7 for 69, and Thomas had 7 for 67.

They will both contribute. Some of Kelly's production didn't stat like the pass interferance in teh end zone.

we went from zero WR's guys over 6' to 3....finally.

Campbell is in the same offense for the first time AND has a big target for the first time.

I'm liking our chances against the Giants a lot more than last year. 16-7 it was close, let's win it!

Dude, they both were a bust. Stop drinking the Kool-aid.

What did they do to show otherwise? Com'on.

They should both have better seasons this year. In fact the whole offense should be better, HOWEVER, if the o-line does not hold up then it's not going to matter who receiving because Campbell will be on his backside lots.

You must not be a bartender, otherwise you'd know the beverage of choice of the bloggaz up here.

I don't drink kool-aid, not the burgundy and gold kind anyway. Red, (Yes, red is a flavor for those who know) and grape only.

It's straight up idiotic to say that guys who are playing their first season, you know, ROOKIES, are bust.

First of all, they're trying to master probably the 2nd or 3rd hardest position in football at WR. Malcolm had problems with his knees, and Thomas was freakin' 20 with only a year actually playing WR at Michigan State. It takes time to master the WR spot, only hall of famers come and grasp it right away, dudes like Randy Moss and Jerry Rice.

Second, you do not call a second round pick a bust. By the NFL definition a bust is a player that was chosen high in the draft (first round, but I'd say really top 10 picks), had a productive college career, and had a lot of hype coming out of school.

Like Reggie BUST.

So, again I stand by the statement that: "Anyone who was saying that Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly were a)bust, or b)should be cut LAST YEAR during their ROOKIE seasons ought to have their 'net privileges revoked for life."

nice work Kelly, im glad someone stepped up without getting hurt, randle el will be fine, winning solves everything and i think the Skins will do that.
of the 14 analysts on espn.com 12 picked last place and 2 picked 3rd place for the Skins
Retroskins14 picks : Skins 2009 NFC East Champs (if they beat the giants on sunday)
Retroskins14 picks: Skins 27-giants 13

I believe Campbell will breakout this year and be possibly the best QB in the division

If I'm right the Skins win the division, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong and I'm wrong most of the time with the Skins

but not this year, also the D will be nice if the db's and lb's hold up

Now call something in September for March.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | September 9, 2009 3:56 PM

1. We will question everything about the Redskins.

2. Like always, everyone on this blog will think they are correct and everyone else is wrong.

3. None of the so called experts picked the super bowl winner.

4. Bret Favre retires again.

5. T.O wants out of Buffalo.

-----

6. More then one player will do something so dumb it lands them in jail. Fans will endlessly debate wether the Comish's suspensions for said players are equal to the crimes

7. A team will announce a new uniform change form their classic look to something a college football program threw up.

8. Sports Talk Radio will sound very depressed.

9. Random posts on Cowbell.

10. ESPN will cover nothing but Brett's retirement and possible reinstatement.

Don't look now, but Campbell has twice as many tools this year as last.

Posted by: freakzilla |

More, if you count all the tools here on RI.

Gee, who'd have thunk that showing some patience with first year players could actually pay off??

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | September 9, 2009 3:38 PM

Lemme splain it to you beanboy. The only reason he got it together is because we rode him so hard last year. Patience is for babies. This is the NFL. If we'd been patient with him, he would still be complaining about a sore knee. We made a man out of him. No patience on RI, and this just proves that it doesn't work.

In that case, hurry up and write something intelligent, t-e!

I think the reason Zorn waited the extra 2 weeks to name Kelly #2 was because if Kelly got hurt again and based on past history it was and is significant possibility, he could then put Thomas ARE in the spot. CYA for the sake of the press and the large egos of men playing a kids game.

Just a thought, good one? Bad one? Depends on perspective.

Maybe I'm dreaming but I'm hoping these guys could become, Art Monk(Kelly#12),Gary Clark (Moss)Ricky Sanders,( D. Thomas#11) some of you older guys on here know who I'm talking about.
