Landry caught by double moves

Free safety LaRon has struggled in deep coverage this season and did again in the loss to the Saints.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees teamed with wide receivers Marques Colston and Robert Meachem on 40- and 53-yard touchdown passes - both times burning Landry on double moves. The Saints specifically targeted the Redskins safeties, New Orleans Coach Sean Payton said, incorporating double moves into this week's game plan because of the problems the Redskins have had in covering double moves.

"It was double moves on both of 'em," Landry said. "Well, the last one ... that was a missed coverage, assignment. [Great] throw and catch. We played well the whole game and it came down to the last play. Like I always preach, man, 'Finish.' We just didn't finish."

Landry was credited with a team-high 12 tackles. He also had a sack and three passes defensed. Once again, though, he gave up big plays in the passing game.

"No matter how it looks I'm going to try to jump on it, get the break on something," Landry said. "Staring it down, they ran a nice double move. He [Brees] stepped up in the pocket, I watched him step up in the pocket. ... Great call in that situation."

Landry accepts whatever criticism comes from the media and fans. "I mean, y'all talk about it y'all talk about it," he said. "I mean, the nature of it is how it looks.

"Y'all don't really know the play call, y'all don't really know the situation. If it's talked about it's talked about. I can't stop that. All you can do is know the truth behind it and have thick skin."

You're just to dumb to know how to play FS. Time you watched from the sidelines.

Trade this bum already!

"The truth behind it", Laron, is that you stink on ice. You're a FREE Safety, brother, not a strong safety -- know the effin' difference and play the position the right way. Stop trying to be ST, cuz you ain't him and never will be. Stop pounding on your chest like you're a superstar; you alone cost us 14 points today, and the 7 at the end, with the game on the line, was unforgivable.

Oh, and take Suisham with you on your way outa town...

Just fire Zorn already. He is such a Fing loser... its not even describable how much of a loser he is.

He pusses out of going for the kill AGAIN. For what? To kill some time? Great... if you go for the TD and GET IT, the game is OVER. You still can kick the FG and be up 10 with under two minutes.

Then, after Step Child dorks the snap to F up the FG attempt, zorn looked like somebody shot his mother right in front of his eyes.

For sheise sake, wipe that stupid look off your face and act like you believe you are going to win the Fing game anyway.

They deserved to get jobbed by the refs after zorn played like a puzzy again.

If the ref is point to the ground and blowing his whistle calling Sellers down, how could that be reviewable. If Sellers knows itss not a fumble he will let up when the whistle blows and not go for the ball, wtf?!?

Posted by: pquick6165 | December 6, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

And another thing... zorn got lead down the garden path by Payton not once but twice...

Stupid and a puzzy is not the combo you are looking for in an NFL head coach.

Curzon417 that's the only way LL learns from these mistakes. Otherwise the coaching staff is implicitly approving his undisciplined game. The skins neeed to address FS during the free agency period.

I thought they did the right thing - killing time then going for the field goal to (try to) go up two scores. Joe Gibbs would do the same thing during the glory years. But Gibbs could rely on Mark Moseley and Chip Lohmiller so it was more of a sure thing. They need to get out of the Sean Suisham business and send a message that poor play will not be tolerated.

There's been a lot of talk about conspiracy so I'll just join in the vibe and ask you to ponder this. Is LL the perfect made-by-the-League villain or what? He was posing and preening so very much today and yet on the other hand, blowing such big plays that I wondered if he isn't becoming the virus within the system?!

Posted by: sugarstreet | December 6, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

I'd sign up for that as long as he promises not to draft Tebow.

He's on the record as saying he would draft him and has professed his love for Tebow repeatedly.

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 6, 2009 8:10 PM

Did not know this, and am w/you on this.

For me, the PFO would not have input on drafts. This would be the GM and the HC, with input from OC and DC.

But in no way shape or form do I want Tebow.

Like many things today, it's just sad because I had such high hopes for Laron Landry this year, I was hoping he could take that next step into becoming one of the upper echelon safeties in the NFL. But today he proved that he still thinks and at times plays like a rookie.

I think the only way you resolve the Landry situation is by two ways: Either trade him (really unlikely), or you draft or sign a natural free safety.

I know Landry is the free safety now, and any excuses shouldn't be made for him. Believe me, I'm not. But it's a little hard to ask a guy to change the way he's been playing football his entire life.

There are 53 millionaires and 1 billionaire in Ashburn, VA who dont give a ratazz what we, the unwashed, mindless, merchandise buying masses say here.
We're now pulling for a really good 3-9 team (note to WashPost, mathematically out of it) that should be preparing for 2010 and continue playing backups to see who can play at NFL speed and not pre-season speed.

The next 4 games should be viewed as a great opportunity to evaluate 2nd and 3rd string talent. Consider it 8 preseason games before the 2010 regular season begins.

Zorn is a loser... How much better would Campbell have had to play in order for Zorn to give him a shot at winning this game. He had three touchdowns at that point. I really think this could have been a very important game for Jason campbell's confidence. I firmly believe we would have thrown a TD on that 3rd and 1 play when we were up 27-20 the saints were back on their heels defensively we needed to take the wind out of them.

I agree he needs to play SS and has been playing out of position, however he's been playing FS for 2 years now and it's not working. I'm for addressing FS in FA or the draft.

Problem I have with this azz clown is the celebrating on 1st and 2nd down and then getting burnt on 3rd. Not to mention all the missed tackles.

I blame Jason Reid for his article after the Cowboys game saying Landry has grown into the FS position.

Landry is a Strong Safety period. That is what he played at LSU and what he played when he came here. With the loss of ST, he has been rotated and frankly, he is simply not a FS. He is much better suited to play up in the SS possition. They need a true FS and he wiill ultimatly be a Pro Bowl SS. Just watch.

Landry... I REALLY hope you read these comments like you fail to adequately read qbs in the league... You're NOT as good as you think you are! Unfortunately, your posing and posturing after each play does not help us in the end... SHUT-UP, STOP SHOWING OFF and be humble enough to play smart every down... Do you hear me? EVERY DOWN! You idiot! God rest Sean Taylor's soul... But, this kind of faulty play in the secondary would not occur if he were still here and able to play the game.

Landry, who the hell are you preaching "Finish" to? If you're not looking in the mirror, I hope the next guy you say it to in the locker room tells you to shove it.

There were a lot of bonehead plays (and officiating) to ruin a great performance, but you get 2 "game bones" for the 14 points you gave NO.

If Blache has any balls, he sits you until you learn some discipline at FS.

I'm so tired of this guy's antics. He's all about himself. Prancing around after a simple tackle.. get him out of there - he's a cancer on the team. Same situation as with Portis. The offense has played so much better with anyone but portis running the ball. The defense won't get worse without Landry. We shouldn't have guys who have the mental capacity of a 2nd grader playing on our team. I'm sure Suisham will take the fall but Landry cost us 2 touchdowns today.

Look, I hate it when people use this space as a forum to be nasty and vitriolic, to call players and/or coaches bums and losers, to call for guys' jobs. That said...

LaRon Landry is a TERRIBLE football player. He's an explosive athlete, and when he remembers to take a good angle, keep his head up, and use his arms (this happens about as often as a total lunar eclipse), he can be a punishing hitter. But he's completely lost on a football field: in coverage, in pursuit, in making routine tackles, in playing the ball in the air... he's TERRIBLE. He's not "mistake-prone" or "over-aggressive" or "undisciplined." He's TERRIBLE. He's an awful football player. It's not even a slight exaggeration to say that the number of touchdowns - not just big plays, but actual touchdowns - he's personally allowed by blowing assignments, missing tackles, or utterly failing to make a play on a ball in the air, is a VASTLY larger number than the total number of big game-changing plays he's made in his NFL career.

And, with that in mind, it drives me absolutely crazy to see him strutting around flexing, wagging a finger, pumping his fists, generally acting like the kind of guy who doesn't have a five-year deficit in the stupid-plays-vs.-good-ones category, every time he makes a simple tackle. By the tenth time he jumped up after barely making a routine tackle in this week's game, only to start strutting around and making a scene, I actually started hoping the Saints would burn him one more time, just so we could all get on the same page and acknowledge that he's a flat-out AWFUL football player.

Sure he makes mistakes and sometimes the other team does something good, but you sit back and whine like a girl.....

Get over it, the Skins are a decent team with some issues that is having one of those years. Learn to live for more than trite criticisms based on only what you see on NFL Gameday.

LL didn't lose the game for the skins today, he was straight ballin', simple fact is that the kicker has cost the skins at least two games and coaching another two. Quit getting your jollies off of criticizing others who put there junk on the line every week and give me my fries!

Landry is a Sean Taylor wannabe, but he will never be a Sean Taylor. Landry was a wasted 1st round draft pick. Anyone else tired of watching his chest thumping antics on the field after routine plays? He is undisciplined, another player from the "hood" like Portis who can't speak English and acts like a primma donna. Change his name to "toast" Landry. Truth is the field goal kicker and Landry cost the Redskins this game, along with the "play safe" offense tactics in the 4th quarter when they were down inside the Saint's 10 yrd line and did 3 runs up the gut to "kill time", then missed the Field Goal. When you are 3-8 with NOTHING to lose, damit, go for the TD!!!! The Redskins will end up 3-13. Fire all the overpriced dead wood like Portis, fire Uncle Vinny, and draft some young hungry players like #11 who had the game of his young career today.

Landry obviously spent a lot of time watching Marcus Washington celebrate every tackle like he was Kenny Houston stopping Walt Garrison at the 1 yard line to win the game. Wait a minute, Houston didn't mug for the camera after that tackle. He celebrated the game saving tackle with his team mates.

Ok. I heard mention of Sean T. again, check Ed Reid on Ravens, ST would have been awesome.
My take is DON'T LET THIS GAME FOOL YA. You can sit back and say 'O IT WAS THIS PLAY, OR THAT, OR A BAD CALL OR WHATEVER' this is their potential. Bottom line is the skins as a team need help all over. IF the O line was better they would have slammed drives into the endzone. If the D line was better, Breez would have been under more deress. If the safties.... blah blah blah. You can pick on each position The only positions on this team that I would consider solid going into next year..if I should even use that word would be WR and QB. EVERYWHERE ELSE they need an upgrade whether it be age or talent level.

JC throwing the game-losing interception. need I say more.

our team is basically a good team with a lot of good players that is always sunk by a certain number of abject losers (all starters, mind you - note how much better we play when the down-roster players who actually give a crap are out there?) whom Vinny seems to keep around for some reason. maybe to sabotage any good that could come out of scrappy 3rd stringers trying to make a game of it with a loser at QB and a loser at FS.

hi Vinny!

thedirtysanchez, you really do have shyt for brains man. anyone who closely watched the game could see that he bit on the double move and took himself out of position totally forgetting that as a free safety, he should be back in coverage. he's either too busy trying to land the "you got jacked" hit or looking for a pick when all he has to do is cover his man. the fact that he plays fs isn't his fault because blache and jerry gray aren't using him as the ss he's meant to be. by the same token, landry has been a fs since taylor passed away. when you think of discipline at the fs position, you think of ed reed and/or troy palomalu and of course our own "meast" the late sean taylor. guys that are playmakers because they allow the play to actually come to them not vice versa. even his sack on brees was weak! take a look at it. he threw his shoulder just like he did against jason avant (and brees is much smaller than avant). had brees kept his balance, who knows what would've happened? i have 15 years of american karate and olympic taekwondo training not only as an instructor but also a competitor. when i watch the game, i watch all the players. yes, suisham hurt us again w/ a missed short fg but the difference is the score would'be been 30-16 with the missed fg had landry covered his man on the 2 plays he chomped on.

Why dont we ever see Marko Mitchell in on goal line formations? The guy has the height and length to be a for sure "jump ball" target, but for some reason they refuse to give him a shot. You could tell in the pre-season that this guy gets it and that he'll get the ball no matter where it's thrown.

As a longtime Redskin fan since 1974, now unfortunately living in Pittsburgh, PA,and being extremely dissapointed in this season, I am torn as to what the Redskin organization should do to get back on the winning warpath. I was thinking a couple weeks ago(before corresponding with a 'Skins fan in the D.C. area, who said the 'Skins losing season is because of Snyder(and Cerrato?), that the 'Skins should get rid of Zorn. The Redskins front office(Snyder) is not leaving all the play calling to ONLY the coaches. Maybe Zorn's hands are tied because of Snyder. If that is true, Mr. Snyder, please just own the team, hand out the paychecks, let the coaches do their job, and leave the play calling them. I think that is what the late great Jack Kent Cooke, the previous owner, did.

Posted by: mbonhamwolv | December 7, 2009 4:24 AM | Report abuse

Please learn the game before you post, otherwise, you sound ignorant of how to play the game. Going for the field goal was the right thing to do! If you make it, and that is a chip shot, you are up 10 points with less than 2 minutes to go and they have no timeouts. If you start passing and have incompletions, the clock doesn't move. You need a reliable kicker in pressure situations and Suisham just aint that. Where's the obligatory hate on Campbell?

The thing everyone should be focusing on is the 2nd down play preceeding the missed field goal. As much as the love the stretch play, that's the one time it should have been called. If they take 6 seconds off the clock, we're at the 2 minute warning with 3rd down coming up and they have no timeouts. Even with a missed fg, Brees has to go 80 yards with no timeouts and about 1:15 max.

Finally, you can't let them catch 10-15 yard passes and get out of bounds. Too freakin easy!

I understand the fustration.... trust me, I do. Yes, LL got beat by double moves...yes, Suisham missed the fg....yes, JC threw the interception.

Lets talk about the bigger problems.
1. Blatche allows this LL to play FS
2. Vinny never addressed FS or OL and other positions in the off season
3. Vinny brought back Suisham
4. JZ doesn't play to win...he plays not to lose. (It is proven that this team can't win this way)
5. JC is not an accurate QB
6. JZ or Danny Smith allows Randel El to return punts...STILL with no production
7. JZ won't put Marko and Devin/Malcom at the ends and put Santana at the slot (Redzone mistake)

Any other suggestions........

Zorn must goooooo!!!! Apparently, Zorn loves to keep incompetent players on his team. The free safety gets suckered every game for a big play and he's still starts. The kicker is so unreliable that he couldn't make a high school team. If the play calling hadn't been taken from him and given to Lewis the offense would still be struggling to beat the boy scouts team. Zorn should be kissing Lewis' feet on his way out the door.

STOP trying to blow up everyone with each tackle you attempt. STOP posing after you've made a tackle after the runner has gained 9 yards on 1st down. You play FREE SAFETY, which means you keep the receivers in FRONT of you!

LaRon, you're not a 17-year old any more.

You can understand and even forgive mistakes. They're going to happen, but when LaRon Landry postures after every tackle--clapping and nodding his head repeatedly for the cameras, folding his arms in a defiant "you-can't touch-this, chump" gesture, then I say bench him. He's blind to his own limitations and he needs some humility. They benched Carlos Rogers. Bench this guy until he learns to be a pro., take responsibility (which he hasn't--he's only said in effect you don't know what the coverage is, man, and they made a good play), and show some maturity. LaRon, you're not a 17-year old any more.

I love my LSU buys but was hoping to exploit Landry, and glad as to that outcome. Why m I posting? Because I CONGRATULATE & Thank each and every one of you who have been bashing Landry and his running his mouth, posing, antics, etc...

I was embarrassed as an Alum because of his schtick he was putting on. I chalk it up to Karma, he got what he deserved/asked-for. Celebrating after every tackle like you're the best in the World? Geesh, just do your job.

Anyway, great game. Me and my krew over here had basically accepted defeat with a bit over two minutes to go & we were already talking about how at least it was good to get the "undefeated" talk/pressure off the team, etc...

Everyone should visit the NO Saints fan site to see what they are saying about LL. Being a former LSU Tiger, he still gets a lot of coverage there, and after yesterday's game it's pretty funny. I get a laugh out of all the talk about how LL is "out of position" as a FS and that he would do much better at SS in run support. We should ask Turner, Jacobs, Jackson, Barber, etc, etc, who all have cleaned his clock more than once, if they agree that "he would be a pro-bowler" at SS. Putting him at a new position would not:
1. Improve man coverage technique, esp. on tight ends (Shockey ate him alive)
2. Correct horrible tackling technique (if Brees regains his balance, and he almost did, he probably burns the skins for another 40 yd TD),
3. Make him a team player,
4. Get all the screws out of his head,
5. Teach him how to play zone,
6. Cure him of being an incurable A-hole

I just want to know why does he not celebrate on a touchdown he's given up like he does when he makes a big hit?

He'll never be Sean Taylor and I hope he realizes that now.....

Landry should do less jawboning and focus on the game. Brees's is right about karma. Landry running up and down the Saint's sideline throughout the game and taunting them helped cost the Skins a victory.

Like I always preach, man, 'Finish.' We just didn't finish."

Landry is just another 'Thug-Life' player. Low Football IQ and Im sure low IQ also outside the game. It shows in his comments.

So what!? Like he said: You people dont know what's being called in the game...someone of you may have never even played the game, dont know the ins and outs of football ...So, like little Richard says: Shut up, just shut up.
Mr. Snyder dont want to hear it, get it.

The truth Landry is that you suck big fat hairy donkey dick. You pose and preen for the camera on routine plays - you know doing what you are supposed to be doing.

You are an overpaid loser, plain and simple. That is the truth.

laron's a metairie native (that's right across the 17th st canal from new orleans), he played for lsu, face it:

boy is a true blue BAYOU boy, and has black and gold in his veins, even if he doesn't consciously acknowledge it! subconsciously, though, maybe that's why he gave the saints such big plays...

It is awesome to read a bunch of computer jockeys who likely never played any sort of organized sport much less learn a playbook sit here an criticize LL. Fact is, he is right..you don't know the calls or the responsibilities, you just assume that he got beat cause you saw his number on your TV screen. Sure he makes mistakes and sometimes the other team does something good, but you sit back and whine like a girl.....

LL didn't lose the game for the skins today, he was straight ballin', simple fact is that the kicker has cost the skins at least two games and coaching another two. Quit getting your jollies off of criticizing others who put there junk on the line every week and give me my fries!

To TheDirtySanchez,

First rule for a Free Safety, especially during the last defensive stand when the game is on the line... NOBODY GETS BEHIND YOU FOR THE BIG PLAY - AS IN A 53 YARD TD -NOBODY - PERIOD. Regardless of the call, or his assignment, or how much he likes to see himself on TV clowing like a narcissitic idiot, LL should have NEVER LET ANYONE GET BEHIND HIM - EVER - PERIOD. 'Nuff said, do you understand?

BTW - Is giving up a 40 yarder and a 53 yarder what you refer to as "straight ballin'?" Cause if it is, we sure don't need to see any more of that flawed technique ever again.

Landry needs to: 1) Go back to his natural position of Strong Safety and 2)Cut out the posing, posturing and self glorification when he makes a simple play. And whatever "straight ballin'" is, if that's what he's been doing, then he can flush that trash straight down the crapper. Period.

And I'm pretty familiar with the music of Little Richard, but I don't recognize the lyrics you're quoting. From what song might they come from, oh double not invisible one?

I know that this is Just a Dream Because of all the other needs that we have.. We gave Landry a chance at FS and he is just not that. Sean taylor was one of a kind and he could make up ground on defenders, landry seems to think that he can do the same when in fact he can't even hit like sean.. Imagine if sean had a shot at D.Brees like Landry did with that sack he might have been out the game.... BUT ANYWAYS I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE TAYLOR MAYS(USC FS) BACK THERE AND MOVE LANDRY BACK AT SS.... again i know he is going to high up for us to adress all our needs and also get him... BUT I WANT EVERYBODY TO KEEP IN MIND THAT THE O.LINE POOL is not that deep in this years draft so Free Agents might be our answer.

ALL u guys who are on landry for his mistakes during the saints game are stupid and dont kno football did u see how many tackles he had during that game and you guys act like he asked to be put at that position the only reason he is there is because of sean taylors death

Posted by: dauntebradshaw

Are you blind. He doesn't know how to tackle.

Who cares if we lose these games. Maybe that's the plan so we can get a better draft pick for next year. Let's get one more win (Dallas) and forget about it.

BTW, Landry is a natural SS and next year he will be put in that spot again. The initial idea ofcourse was Taylor and Landry. We need to find a new FS....along with an RB (Portis is done) and some offensive linemen.

Does anyone else here think that Zorn and Lewis should stay as Head Coach and Offensive Cood.? It seems to be working.
I think the problem this season as been not having a RB who wanted to run the ball. Portis has not being the same guy he was in Denver (Slim, Quick, and Hungry).

All of here in The Big Easy would like to thank the 'Skins for an early Xmas present. Y'all should have won that game; but, a W is a W no matter how much it smells.

Go Terps

Dear Redskins Fans,
Don't beat yourself up. As a Saints fan we have been on the bad end of this deal many times. Y'all played very well and gave us a win we barely deserve. The Cardinals deserve some thanks too!

Thanks for giving us 12-0, Home field advantage, and whatever other freakish circumstances the NFL passes our way, though. Skins did a lot better than those Patsies!!! That was a game we will never forget, on a day we will never forget.

Landry is a confused cheap-shot artist. His nonchalant comments and unbelievable posing and showboating are vivid proof that he does not understand what is going on. He should not move from FS to SS. He should be moved immediately to the practice squad, followed by the waiver wire. Is he kidding?

Posted by: FOOTBALLPHD | December 7, 2009 4:45 PM | Report abuse

FS........Put him at his true position.....SS and get a FS. But stop playing dumb until then.

Posted by: creepyjackolopeeye | December 7, 2009 6:03 PM | Report abuse

Yeah right , Leron you're a big hitter, big gamer.. during the Atlanta game when Turner was running right at you, you went down on your knees faster than a harlem hooker and all turner did was jump right over you and run 40-50 yds for a touchdown. Some tough , mean hitter you are. There's a difference between a cheap shot artist and a hitter. The league is laughing at you and our dumb ass coaches for not having courage to cut you outright.

This guy cares more about a big hit than playing defense. He poses when he makes a tackle like he did something great.

I am a LSU graduate and until yesterday, a bid Laron Landry fan. I'm not a fan anymore, not because of his play but rather his behavior. He took several cheap shots at players and appears to TALK TRASH way too much! I know for fact he didn't act like that when he played for Saban. What is his problem?

Posted by: boudreba | December 7, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Landry has a point when he says that we don't know the defensive play call. Within the defensive scheme, Landry may not have license to lay off the aggressive play to avoid being beaten on the double moves. Being overly cautious and getting beaten consistently on underneath routes would be just about as bad.

Does the free safety have the inside help he needs to play behind the receiver without giving away the store? It is not clear what the scheme demands. I expect that the scheme demands he be both aggressive on defending the inside cut and quick enough not to get beat on the deep cut. Given the performance envelope of even the best talent, there is going to be a trade off between the two. This is something that can be addressed in practice. I am certain the defensive coaches are aware.

Essentially, the Redskins played well. That they lost after such play was a freak accident. It does not invalidate the play. 90% of the time that level of play would have won the game. That the unlikely 10% probable outcome occurred does not invalidate the effort. If they keep playing at this level, the wins will come.

This team has come a long way over the course of the season. That was a great NFL game, played at a high level on both sides of the ball.

Let's be real, people. Can anyone tell me what DB or FS has NEVER been burned on a double move. How about rarely? I know there are good DBs out there, and I know there are some that don't take the bait all the time, but let's get real!!! I'd like to see you out there on the field guarding against a double move. You'd likely be flat on your back watching the ball sail over your head. Oh...such pretty clouds....
You all talk like you're seasoned professional football players. Grow up!
