Moss Could See Additional Returns

Although Antwaan Randle El still is the team's primary punt returner, top wideout Santana Moss has been involved in the return game and could have a bigger role for the remainder of the season.

"If you've noticed, I've had Santana back there," Coach Jim Zorn said. "They are going to split opportunities there. But based on what we do and how we do it, Antwaan will be back there.

"He's a sure receiver. He wants to go north and south, and his decisions have been good."\

Randle El has a 6.3-yard average on six returns with a long gain of 15 yards. He has seven fair catches. The eight-year veteran also has 16 receptions for 186 yards.

I do believe Zorn consults with RI for making personnel-use decisions.

Let me speak to the upside for this team for a moment.

The defense hasn't played to its capability. Its playing well, but it can be significantly better. Especially if Orakpo develops and Tryon plays well as a 3rd DB.

If the defense plays up to its ability, we're competitive in most every game.

The special teams have been adequate. One huge muckup last week and 1 long KO return. We did score a TD on teams and have missed just 1 kick. We're holding our own on teams.

Which leaves the offense. Campbell is about middle of the league in QB rating. Cooley, Moss and ARE have all shown they can contribute significantly. Our run game looks weak, but a good part of that is our OL.

Its really about the OL. Can we make it adequate? Well, YES. There are guys out there.

Would I take Heyer and Runyan at T, Dock and Kendall at G and Rabach at C? Yes!!! World beater? No. Good enough for Campbell to find his receivers? Yes!! Good enough to open a few more holes for the RBs? Yes!!

Good enough to have fewer sacks and more points? Yes!!!

Thing is, if the front office wants this team to be better, they can make that happen.

But they haven't. Why? I can't explain it any other way except this:

The front office has QUIT on this team.

Not a bad idea to mix it up a bit...

what about Aldrige? If he has the kind of speed they say he does, that could give us a boost.

Posted by: CheyenneWY | October 16, 2009 4:34 PM | Report abuse

how about D'Angelo Hall returning kicks?

Posted by: 3rings | October 16, 2009 4:37 PM | Report abuse

Why not put Moss in the mix for PR?

Now that there's no Oline, it's not like he's gonna be seeing a whole lot of passes.

Might as well get some work out of him...

Best charity I have seen so far in my handy hand-out

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Is nt he the guy that created the telephone? thats rude.

But if they allow "lighthouse for the Blind" to keep their name, I guess everything is fair game.

Hmm, we could just punt on every first down. Then we'll let Moss return their punts. As long as the defense holds up we should be ok. If he takes 2-3 to the house everygame...PLAYOFFS!!!!

Posted by: PAskinsfan17 | October 16, 2009 4:42 PM | Report abuse

Moss is dangerous, but he's also too valuable to have on PR more than a few times per season.

Last year vs Det, he took one to the house and on our next possession, his hammy went out. Related? Who knows, but injuries to PR are pretty common.

The fact that the Skins didn't develop an alternate PR guy is a coaching issue. Another problem courtesy of Jim Zorn.

And returned punts & picks for six.

You can't hate him for how he carried here in Washington. They knew what they were getting before he showed up in his burgundy suit.

Posted by: RedDMV | October 16, 2009 4:16 PM | Report abuse

Returned punts & picks for 6? I only remember him getting tackled on the 5 yard line after a punt return on a Monday night game? Almost, but not all the way.

No doubt, the only reason they signed him was P.R. His skills and speed were clearly diminished by the time he got here, and

I'd like to think someone in the FO knew this, but since the same goof troop is there, prolly not.

The Skins should consider Runyan he has a mean streak that could open holes in the run game..I think he's a RT put him and BMW on the right side. If Big Chris is out the rest of the season Heyer can hold down the LT spot. If Chris comes back then Heyer will be our top backup with flexibility to play both sides. Plus Runyan would probably like to get back at Philly and he has handled the Giants in the past. As for the Cowgirls..Texas Girls are EASY...

Really, you want Heyer to be LT? You want him protecting the blind side of the quarterback? Heyer couldn't protect the blind side of Ray Charles or Helen Keller.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | October 16, 2009 4:53 PM | Report abuse

He's provided a remedy from the blight of turnovers the defense was suffering from before his arrival.

POSTED BY: Chia Pet

Not to get all English-y on you, but it was more of a dearth than a blight. I know at LEAST two of his three int. came from lucky caroms off receivers he wasn't close enough to actually cover.

He has good hands and manages to be in the right place often, like a good rebounder.

I'll let Buddy Holly handle this one:

There you go and baby here am I
Well you left me here so I could sit and cry
Golly gee what have you done to me
Well I guess it doesn't matter anymore

Do you remember baby last September
How you held me tight each and every night
Oh baby how you drove me crazy
But I guess it doesn't matter any more

BRIDGE:
There's no use in me a-cryin'
I've done everything and now I'm sick of trying
I've thrown away my nights, wasted all my days over you

Now you go your way baby and I'll go mine
Now and forever 'till the end of time
And I'll find somebody new and baby
We'll say we're through and you won't matter any more

Has anyone actually figured out what Sherm Lewis is doing.

I know there's been alot of jokes and such, but for real, when he came in here it was reported that he hadn't talked to Zorn and he didn't quite know what his role would be.

Apart from providing his "eyes", does he do anything else?

Offer any other body parts?

People out there need hearts and livers and kidneys and stuff too...

Jeff Bridges?

I don't think even The Dude could help out the 'Skins at this point.

The Dude: I dropped off the money exactly as per... look, man, I've got certain information, all right? Certain things have come to light. And, you know, has it ever occurred to you, that, instead of, uh, you know, running around, uh, uh, blaming me, you know, given the nature of all this new sh!t, you know, I-I-I-I... this could be a-a-a-a lot more, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, complex, I mean, it's not just, it might not be just such a simple... uh, you know?

The Big Lebowski: What in God's holy name are you blathering about?

The Dude: I'll tell you what I'm blathering about... I've got information man! New sh!t has come to light! And sh!t... man, she kidnapped herself. Well sure, man. Look at it... a young trophy wife, in the parlance of our times, you know, and she, uh, uh, owes money all over town, including to known pornographers, and that's cool... that's, that's cool, I'm, I'm saying, she needs money, man. And of course they're going to say that they didn't get it, because... she wants more, man! She's got to feed the monkey, I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?

So just to recap: Bridges wasn't good enough to crack the 53-man roster for the Skins but now he starts for the NFC Champs.

Since we’re looking at the strong possibility of having an interim head coach soon, can’t we have the possibility of an interim GM as well? Promote Morocco Brown for the rest of the season. Come on Snyder, throw us a bone at least.

Keys to Redskins' turnaround for the rest of the season.

- Defense - must force turnovers and put pressure on quarterbacks. The team needs to blitz more often and to hit the quarterback every chance they get even if it means a few late hit penalties. Hits on quarterbacks take their toll. Turnovers shorten the field and given the unlikely nature of this offense ever driving more than 50 yards on any team for the rest of the season, we need the ball in the opponent's territory as often as possible. Defense also needs to find a way to make a score - safety or interception/fumble return. This will give the insurance score for victory!

- Special teams - with Moss being back there hopefully this will spark yardage for the team. Key is to give the offense as short a field as possible.

- Offense. Perhaps now is the time to employ no-huddle and wildcat formations. Get the defense tired since they'll be obviously going after the quarterback. And with the opponent likely to blitz more often than not, perhaps reverses and double reverses or other misdirections will slow down the pass rush. Key for offense will be a field of no more than 50 yards to cover. Offense must score 21 or more points - defense isn't giving up many points so the offense has to find a way to make 3 touchdowns.

There are 11 games left in this season. The Redskins should look at how the Ravens won their Super Bowl when they had virtually no offense. If the defense can be dominant, even Jason Campbell and the Sheriff Wanna Whines can do some damage - maybe.

Why r they so set in ARe taking punts an rock taking kicks they r both equally hurrrrrrrting . Rock needs to put up a return past the 35 or shut up with he's loud mouth. ARE seems to lack hunger 4 the position . Someone needs to b inserted who's fighting 4 there check. I would rather watch paint dry on my living room wall on Sunday then continue to watch these heartless slow turds embarrass the jersey the wear. Seriously doesn't ARE have to take some blame on the turnover agaisnt the panthers . Did he call fair catch or not?

Um, don't you have to have a team built for the wildcat, that's practiced the wildcat, and a coach that knows how to run the wildcat?

I kind of feel like Vinny C has a lot of say in the starting lineup-not just who gets drafted and makes the team. I think he feels like he may be fighting for his job too, possibly Snyder is hinting about making a move there. We all see veteran O-lineman on the market that arent certainly headed to hawaii but their an upgrade, who do we put in, lineman who are too young to play, not up to par or who the skins have invested a lot of resources in (big mike). Vinny might be trying to show Snyder hey I found another diamond in the rough with williams. Same thing on O, why havent we gotten Mitchell in at WR even though he showed skills in the preseason, because Vinny was the one who wanted to spend 3 high draft picks on ball catchers who have yet to show anything. Even though he might have found another Horton but this time on the O side in Mitchell, he simply cant let his pride and joy second round picks look like flops. He is more worried about his own job than worry about putting the best players (or signing better ones for the o-line) out there. Maybe Zorn is telling players hey, we have the players to switch in and out but my hands are tied on who I can or cant activate any giving week. Just a though

Randle El is a great character guy, but he-- like nearly everyone else on the team-- has been overestimated by the team's internal talent evaluators. They always give their own guys good grades without properly comparing them to the rest of the league.

And compared to the rest of the league... Randle El is a sub-par punt returner. Sorry, but it's true.

FIRE VINNY!
FIRE VINNY!
FIRE VINNY!

Posted by: drischord | October 16, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

I agree with a previous poster's comments ... fire Vinny and promote Morocco Brown to GM. Brown seems to have respect from a lot of folks in the league and he was working with Jerry Angelo with the Bears before the Skins scooped him up. Only question is whether Morocco Brown could fend off Snyder telling him what to do ... a young guy so I doubt he could resist the advances of the billionaire owner.

In terms of punt returns, put Devin Thomas back there! ARE has not been effective for TWO YEARS. Jim Zorn says he "wants to go north and south" .... CHILD PLEASE! ARE might WANT to go north and south but I just see the brother every Sun GOING east and west. Do my eyes deceive me? I think not! Devin Thomas is doing JACK anyway so put him back there on punt returns and see what the kid can do!
