What to Expect as We Blog the Season

Judging from the comments, a few of you apparently believe I've been too soft on the team. With the Redskins only a few days into camp and having practiced three times to this point, I don't know what I would be critical of even if wanted to take that route.

Based on my 20 years in this business, I'm sure many situations will arise this season that will prompt me to be critical in my analysis of the team. That's just the way it works because stuff usually happens.

In my previous position as the day-to-day beat reporter, I would simply chronicle what occurred and leave the opining to my former partner and buddy, Jason La Canfora, and the paper's lineup of super star columnists. But now it is my responsibility to weigh in, based on dispassionate reporting, about potential or actual problems on the field and in the front office.

Although I could always be wrong, I don't believe we're at the point where a heavy hand is needed from me. And if circumstances change in the next minute, we'll adjust. I just don't see the need to beat you all over the head about the state of the Skins during the Daniel Snyder era.

Do I really need to constantly write about how the team has missed the playoffs in seven of Snyder's 10 seasons as owner? Would it make me seem tougher if I let you know about some of the derogatory things people around the league say about Skins management? And do I need to point out each week that this franchise hasn't enjoyed elite status in the sports world since the end of Gibbs 1.0, which was a long time ago in what seems like a galaxy far, far away?

There's about as much sport in that as clubbing baby seals (and before anyone from PETA calls, I DO NOT advocate clubbing baby seals). I definitely don't view the world through burgundy-and-gold colored glasses, but I also don't see the need to be negative every day just for the sake of being negative. It's just not that type of party for me.

My new gig, as I see it, is to provide news about the Skins as fairly and as quickly as I can. If the Skins make poor decisions that lead to a poor on-field product, then that's what I'll analyze. If they make sound decisions and have a successful season, then that's where I'm headed.

If you want to read constant rants about everything that's wrong with the Redskins, I'm not your guy. But if/when it's time to bring the wood, I'll be there.

I'm headed out to the field now. Perhaps I'll find something to rip.

No need to be negative/nagative? Then don't start any more posts with those two words JASON TAYLOR.

How can you be soft when we just started?

"Perhaps I'll find something to rip."

Looking for something to 'rip'?

Not good.

Honest observations beat 'ripping' everyday.

And right now, with nothing going on but practice, what is there to 'rip'?

Rip two months from now if Haynesworth and Blache are fighting, CR and MeAngelo dropping INTs, Portis is hurt, Jason Campbell ineffective, Betts non-productive, Fred Davis still sleeping---well, you get the drift.

Right now, all we talkin' 'bout is practice.

lol, rip ahead! good post, JReid.

Posted by: RedCherokee | August 1, 2009 9:16 AM | Report abuse

Really, that's all most of us want Jason. Just report the facts and leave the agenda elsewhere. Criticize when it is warranted (which with the clowns running the team should be fairly often) and praise when it is warranted. I don't think we need you to tell us how this franchise got to the point as you so refreshingly point out

YES! Stop repeating what we have been through. THE LAST 10 YEARS has been well documented and engraved. No need to repeat a billion times....

Keep it up Reid. I'm loving you in here instead of that other guy. He had an obvious ax to grind and it showed in every piece he wrote.

Don't worry about to ones who will call on you to bash the Skins regularly, many internet fans live to "vent" and never seem to get enjoyment out the Skins. Kind of makes you wonder why they follow them at all?

We, the average fans appreciate your consistent updates and good info. We look forward to your unbiased opinion, positive or negative on the team. Keep up the good work!

Thank God, Jason. It's about time!!! But be careful, you're approach seems practical and well-reasoned, which will probably upset most of the idiots that sit at their jobs all day drooling over their keyboards waiting to rip every post and poster along the way.

Three cheers for The Mayor!!!

Just a suggestion, but you may have a few more readers if you do EXACTLY what you've been doing! Or you could invite the "jilted children coalition" for beers and act like a spoiled brat. Do you have an ipod too?!

Thank you, Mayor Jason. This has to be the most sensible thing I have read in this blog in almost two years. But in case you are wondering, apparently it is okay to drone on and one about how this team has missed the playoffs upteen times, etc in umpteen years.

Do players hear it when the fans cheer and chant their name?

Yes, of course.

Most of them pay no attention to it, though. It's nothing personal.

Except in MK's case it would be more accurate to say "I just go out there and ride the stationary bike."

You're doing great Mayor - except for that whole getting to the field late and not getting a seat thing (I still think we should call you "Sleepy"). Hey, what I would like to hear is who is standing out, who is struggling, what the injuries are, etc. and what your opinion is on how this impacts the team. You're right, by now we all know about some of the good and bad moves the Redskins have made and we don't need to have our noses rubbed in the problems with the offensive line.

Posted by: RedSkinHead | August 1, 2009 10:20 AM | Report abuse

Reid, you can't please everyone all the time. If you "rip" stuff, you're JLC all over again. If you keep it positive, you're soft. Just keep it real and let the sheep fall in line. YOU set the tone, bro...not any of us in the comments section.

Play on, playa.

Here, here Mayor! You are gaining my respect. No seething Skin hatred, no irrelevant update on what you're listening to on your Ipod, and no self aggrandizement. Just non judgmental and open observations. You de man. Now, could you please blindside Larry Michael for me... just once?

I don't want negative, and I think MOST fans don't (just the ones who think downtalking their team makes them look smarter), I just want objective. So far, you're doing a great job and always have.

I was extremely excited when I heard you'd be taking over here and I think you'll see that your writing and reporting style will bring in readers rather than drive them away. You've already got me checking the blog multiple times a day when before I checked once a week or so before.

Awesome job, ignore the haters that want this to be the "Anti-Redskins Insider". They can go wallow in their caves on someone elses time. You're doing awesome.

Posted by: abxinc | August 1, 2009 11:07 AM | Report abuse

You're doing a good job so far, JR. Just try to be objective and that's all anyone can ask for.

Try not to take the blog feedback TOO seriously here. As time goes, anonymity is going to make some people say some ugly things. Keep in mind most people who post on these things represent the fringe and not the majority of your audience. Good luck in tackling your new position.

Mayor, JR, Poster of Terrible Quality Vidoes Last Season;

Great Post. Just give us facts, what you see, and give us a lot of one liner comments about what's going on. An occasional rumor is OK by me too.

Please don't be like your former partner and make everything personal. Especially during a bad season we need to hear the positives too.

Finally, we all watch the games and we all read ESPN, Post.com, Yahoo Sports, NFL Insider, etc.. so we get the view from 20,000 feet. I'd like to hear stuff during the season that we otherwise would not hear. For example, last year I would have liked to have heard what Bugel had to say about Rhinehart and why he went from pre-season hopeful to inactive / bench rider. I will never hear about that kind of stuff if I don't hear it from you.

Oh, and finally....don't root for the Ravens. I don't want to hear it.

You're off to a great start in my book.

Posted by: isnadd | August 1, 2009 12:51 PM | Report abuse

YES. Thank you, sir. I stopped reading Redskins Insider once it became clear that negative = good reporting. As soon as JLC left I began to follow it again, and I've been impressed.

Keep up the good work. Criticize when there's good reason for it, sure. But for the love of God just don't end up like -him-. You are doing a great job so far.

Posted by: praxis22 | August 1, 2009 1:03 PM | Report abuse

Jason,

Great post. I appreciate the ground rules. Many of the people here appreciate an honest observation, and some want an insider to be critical. There are always going to be critics. Last year it was tough because at times to read the blog because it was really negative. The play on the field had a lot to do with that but off the field, it seemed that every move was reported with a negative spin. I am not enamored with Snyder. I wish the best for Cerrato and I hope he succeeds. I like Zorn in his quirky way. Given the level of talent in the division, the Skins are facing an uphill climb but I think the team is headed in the right direction. Time will tell and that is the most important thing, time, give these guys a chance to find their identities and come together as a team. Sure it's been a tough 17 years but at least we are not in the Spurrier era when we could really say that this team stinks and be right about it. I think this team is going to surprise a lot of people this year.

That's what I'm talking about JReid. Glad to see you're laying the ground rules for all the whiners up here, all the folks that had/have nothing better to do than criticize you and JLa in the past.

Posted by: PEACE8 | August 1, 2009 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Well put Jason, Real Redskins fans read this blog that love the team but want an objective point of view. If you were negative all the time that would be no fun to read. Hail the Mayor
