Orakpo earns his teammates' respect

From the moment he arrived in Ashburn, rookie defensive end/strong-side linebacker Brian Orakpo made a favorable impression on his teammates - especially the Redskins' veteran leaders.

Orakpo and veteran defensive end Andre Carter share the team lead in sacks with 11. The Redskins are not surprised by Orakpo's success.

"Brian is just a very talented young player," Carter said. "His approach, the way he prepares to play ... that's what you'd like to see all young players do."

Orakpo plays the game "the right way," middle linebacker London Fletcher said.

"Brian is an extremely mature rookie. He's not like your typical rookie," he said. "He's not distracted [easily]. He's very focused. When he's here [at Redskins Park], he understands what he's here for.

"It's all football for him when he's in this building. I appreciate that about him. He wants to get better. He works hard. He has a tremendous work ethic. And it shows on the field. If he makes a mistakes, he's going to try to get it corrected right now."

In the Zone ...

Today's question in the Redskins Tailgate Zone: Was Brian Orakpo the Redskins' best draft pick of the decade?

Steinberg's take

Dan Steinberg has a couple of Redskins-related items. He crunches the team's offensive numbers, with and without Clinton Portis, and talks to Joe Theismann, the real star of "The Blind Side."

I have to say no. The best pick of the decade was the Reaper.

My friend just texted me that Vinny Cerrato resigned.

Please, please tell me this isn't a cruel joke. I might have to end out friendship if this isn't real.

I thought Shanahan and Vinny were tight? Might mean Shanny isn't coming here. Which I'm totally fine with.

"Free at last, thank God almighty we are free at last!" (with apologies to MLK, who doesn't deserve to be in the same discussion as Vinny). Mike and Mike just made the announcement.

Anyone is going to be better than Vinny. I'm rooting for Bill Cowher, myself.

Orakpo's teammates should be lucky to earn HIS respect. He is the only decent player on the ENTIRE team.

Who the F cares if he is earning their loser ass respect?

Vinny resigned? Oh, please, please, please be true! How long until we can buy a "Vinny Quits" Redskins jersey?

Posted by: RedSkinHead | December 17, 2009 8:12 AM | Report abuse

Can we steal Holmgren away from Cleveland? Keep Zorn and Campbell?

Posted by: mmeixler | December 17, 2009 8:13 AM | Report abuse

This gets very,very interesting now.

This discussion is about REAL news, which is that Orakpo's teammates respect him... this Vinny resigning thing doesn't compare to what Andre Carter thinks of Orakpo!

Posted by: Sports_Guru | December 17, 2009 8:17 AM | Report abuse

is this true, or simply a ruse??

what does PFT have to say about it??

Moe, ellsbury, buchholz for Adrian Gonzo....whatcha think?

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | December 17, 2009 8:18 AM | Report abuse

"Vinny resigned?"

I didn't see the story on the team website.

And before it's official, who might be the best candidate to do his job?: whatever that was.

Posted by: MistaMoe | December 17, 2009 8:19 AM | Report abuse

Casserly?

Posted by: shanteefamilee | December 17, 2009 8:19 AM | Report abuse

It's true... but this thread is about the fact that Antwan Randel El thinks Orakpo is a good player!

bean

"...ellsbury, buchholz for Adrian Gonzo....whatcha think?"

I chatted up a sawx fan this morning.

He likes Lackey, but doesn't feel the rotation is strong enough to withstand injury.

So maybe you don't trade Buchholz.

And young, good defensive outfielders who can run aren't a dime a dozen.

You're paying the price for trading away Hanley Ramirez.

Deal with it.

Keep what you got and wait for some guy to be made availiable.

Someone will.

Hire Little Polian as GM
Cowher as HC
Jim Harbaugh as OC

"Can we steal Holmgren away from Cleveland?"

Even if My Cousin Vinny will be no longer showing at FEDEX Field, I'd hold the phone before calling Mike Holmgren.

Yes: we're like the baby Seahawks with Zorn and S Lewis in the house.

But I'd like to take a gander at a young personnal guy from one of the teams listed below, including a guy who's already in house:

Morocco Brown (knows the roster)

Eagles (they've become a dynamic scoring team in the space of a year)

Pats (always solid)

Steelers (always solid)

Falcons (this team got rebuilt quickly after the Vick mess)

Saints (the rebuilt in the wake of the Haslett mess)

Colts (always solid)

I bet one of these teams has some young, sharp, hungry GM type waiting to be the next league recognized personnel guru.

That's who I'd look for.

Posted by: MistaMoe | December 17, 2009 8:31 AM | Report abuse

Holmgren, Zorn, Lewis combo?? First to say I disagree with that. I dont want us to turn into some damn softies, in case you guys forgot everyone knows the Seahawks folds underpressure, Seahawks 2.0 in the rugged NFC East division??? Heeellll nooo!
