Portis called 'very, very doubtful' for Sunday

Coach Jim Zorn all but ruled out running back Clinton Portis from Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos, saying Portis, who suffered a concussion Sunday, is "very, very doubtful."

Portis, who did not attend practice, met with Zorn at Redskins Park before leaving to consult with a physician and review an impact test Portis underwent after he suffered the concussion early during Washington's 31-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. "I had him in my office this morning and he was still ... you could tell that he wasn't quite 100 percent," Zorn said. "We're not going to mess around with any concussion. He does have a concussion."

Quarterback Jason Campbell has encouraged Portis to be careful with his health and return only when he believes he is completely at full strength.

"You're talking about a serious injury. It's something dealing with the head," Campbell said. "Any time there's an injury that way, you're just not talking about short-term, you're talking about long-term. It's very important that they [take precautions] and he takes precautions because this is something that deals further than just football."

Don't worry about those 10,000 other sub-concussions CP, you'll be gone from our consciousness by the time you have dementia at age 40.

O noes, where will we ever find a guy to run 3 yards then fall down?

Posted by: PAskinsfan17 | November 11, 2009 3:14 PM | Report abuse

head may be woozy, but pockets are straight.

Seriously, the NFL needs to do a better job of understanding how to protect these guys. The stuff that has been coming out over the long term effects to these players of these hits just can not be ignored.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 11, 2009 3:17 PM | Report abuse

If you can't practice than you shouldn't play, the Skins haven't had a running game all year and it suddenly shows up when Portis gets knocked out.

Zorn finally loses his temper at halftime in Atlanta, and the team shows a little bit of a heart beat. Now he's back to the wishy washy - well gee, I don't know, I'll get back to you on that.

Portis should be parked, not only because he has headaches, but mainly because he's een ineffective. Betts was running behind the same Offensive Line, and yet he average 4.7 yds a carry?

This season is toast, Vinney and Zorn should be gone Sunday Night! Preperations for next year should start now! Players need to be put on notice, Play hard -- play smart or be gone?

Probably a broke season tix holder getting sued by the team who needs to pay some lawyer fees...

The more JC speaks the more respect I have for the guy beyond football. I only wished he had a better line because they are going to get him really hurt. F Vinny and his damn not draft for need thinking.

Posted by: jm220 | November 11, 2009 3:29 PM | Report abuse

why is Portis in Zorn's office? Not that he shouldn't be there, but really, isn't this the docs that need to be making the judgment. Zorn whould have just about zero say in it.

Like Tomlin did with Ryan Clark in Denver and his problem with playing at altitude. Tomlin went to the docs and just shut it down.

IR Portis and get those bone spurs taken care of. Get him ready for training camp next year since he most likely will be here next year.

From DC Sports Bog

(Rypien didn't offer any specific suggestions for how the Redskins could improve. But when I asked about the offensive line during the Bandwagon year, when Skins QBs were sacked just nine times, he made a few things clear.

"Ninety-nine percent of quarterbacks out there will tell you, you're only as good as the guys up front," Rypien said. "I would never say anything negative about Jason and his play, because they've had the injury bug up front, they have guys not playing to the level. When Jim Lachey was removed from our lineup, when Mo Elewonibi is playing against some of the best rush ends in football, we're not gonna have a very good day on Sunday. Let's not sugarcoat it. Let's say it what it is. We're not gonna be very good running the football or throwing the football when Jim Lachey, one of the best left tackles in football, isn't in the game. Everyone's a professional, everyone wants to be good, but if they're not playing at all cylanders and playing well, you're not gonna be that good offensively. As a quarterback, you're only as good as how they are and how they play. Y.A. Tittle, Sammy Baugh, Sonny Jurgensen, Billy Kilmer, Doug Williams, Joe Theismann, myself, anyone's that's put on a Redskins uniform is not gonna be very good if your line's struggling.")

Yeah, the stuff on the ATL sidelines had more to do with ATL than Albert or Hall.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | November 11, 2009 3:11 PM

Zeke--That's where the Atlanta players and coaches are supposed to be, on their sideline. Neither Hall nor Haynesworth had any business over there. Those still pics that were on Steinberg's blog showed that LL had already cleared the area when Hall went over there.

At $7mill, CP is definitely not getting traded or cut.

I agree that the best we could do is shut him down, let him get all the necessary surgeries he needs with plenty of time to recover.

Hopefully next year we'll have a young dynamic RB that we can platoon with CP26. Maybe it will light a fire under him, force him to practice, and we'll get a small renaissance of production like Fred Taylor had when they threw MJD into the mix.

The only fines should have been to the Atlanta coaches, they should be in control of their emotions. It was a late hit we got a penalty, but it wasn't with intent to harm or even blatantly o.o.b.

totally ga y

anyone besides me think that the 7-2 Broncos look like the 6-2 Redskins of last year?

anyone besides me thing we might as well have overpaid Springs instead of Hall, at least he can tackle and is good enough to play for NE?

Posted by: pabrian2003 | November 11, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

Put Portis the Tortoise on the shelf for the rest of the year. He's done anyway, finito, kaput, see ya. At least Betts has a bit of a spark. We've been losing with the Tortoise, we can lose without him.

The Broncos struggle against tough aggressive physical defenses. They thrive against bend-don't-break defenses. Blache won't attack on Sunday and the Broncos will dominate time of possession. Too bad, cause the Broncos are very beatable.

No reason to mess with concussions. Cal's star RB, Jahvid Best, suffered a concussion last Saturday, and since he'd suffered a mild one a week earlier, he's now being shelved for the remainder of the season.

ccwbambam, Betts is averaging 3.5 yards a carry on the year and Portis is averaging 4.0. My money is on the guy getting 18-22 carries a game who is averaging .5 yards more per carry.

To think that some poor misguided soul 9(Rappcounty,city or some sh it) would actually wish injury to Jason Campbell or any other player just shows the callousness and cruelty that exists in this world today, and the sad part is, the poor pathetic jerk doesn't even realize it.

In sundays lost to Atlanta, after Portis got knocked out. Betts rushed for 70 yards in 15 carries, that's a 4.66 average if you want to get technical.

Portis should be parked until he's able to practice during the week. No Practice - No Play on Sunday.

Zorn and Vinney should be gone after Sunday's game.

hey danny boy, why don't you hire Mike Tyson, hell since you brought in a bingo call from Detroit, why not a ear bitter from the midwest. he could be a blocking full back for portis and after a few ear bites and punches to the opposing defensive lineman faces should open up some holes for slow butt portis to walk through, or put him on the line to block on passing downs, be created danny, think of the future.
