Portis Isn't Winning Any Fans Among Teammates (Updated)

I just received a few more texts and calls from league sources about the Mike Sellers-Clinton Portis incident, and this is not good for the Redskins.

Some people in the locker room wouldn't have been too upset if Sellers had landed a couple of blows (no punches were thrown), because Portis's act has worn real thin with some of his teammates, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. His teammates long ago accepted that Portis holds himself to a different standard and often has simply chosen not to practice, and that Portis's chummy relationship, at least in prior seasons, with owner Daniel Snyder is what it is.

Through a team spokesman, Portis and Sellers declined comment.

But for Portis to actually go to coaches to request/demand that a teammate be removed from a game? As word emerged about Portis's effort to essentially have Sellers demoted during Sunday's16-13 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, many players were upset that Portis even felt emboldened enough to attempt to make such a play.

But, really, why should they have been surprised? In an excellent piece on Portis written by my guy, Barry Svrluga, back in August Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, said former coach Joe Gibbs referred to Portis as an assistant general manager. On Wednesday, Potis jokingly said he got "fired. They released me from that duty. Right now, I'm just a part-time running back."

Asked about the incident after practice, Zorn played down the argument.

"These guys love each other. They absolutely love each other," Zorn said. "This is just how a team goes. I thought it was great. There's no fisticuffs. There's no shoving and pushing. These guys just, you know, ah, 'You didn't say hi to me.' 'No, you didn't say hi to me.' You know? I don't know really what the discussion was.

"In reality it's just a lot of nudging and posturing. It's just something that goes on. These guys are like brothers. And they care about each other. Seriously, it's not an issue."

Zorn was asked whether the events of the week at Redskins Park -- which in addition to the Sellers-Portis incident also included the hiring of a consultant, Sherman Lewis, to help Zorn on offense and the decision of defensive coordinator Greg Blache to reduce his involvement wit the media -- have created a perception that things aren't going so well.

"Only if you [reporters] create that perception," Zorn said. "There's nothing in our locker room that would cite that:"

To be sure, Portis has been a productive player throughout his career with the Denver Broncos and the Redskins. He hasn't attained the type of superstar level, however, that leads some players to set themselves apart from their teammates, sources said. Portis had played through pain, runs hard in games and has been effective in blitz pick-up -- but so what? All these guys have some form of pain.

Middle linebacker London Fletcher also has been among the most productive players at his position in the league, and he continued to practice hard last season while dealing with various injuries. Left tackle Chris Samuels takes practice reps despite a knee problem that could eventually cut short his season. And right guard Randy Thomas also continued to apply himself during practice while dealing with, well, pain from many areas on his body until his season ended because of a triceps injury.

Sellers has been an effective blocker for many years. He has opened many holes that have helped Portis become the league's highest-paid running back at the moment.

Granted, Sellers did mess up on that goal-line play. He blocked the wrong guy and acknowledged he did, but no one is perfect.

Apparently, though, Portis believes differently.

"...Edge James operated out of the stretch run offense.."

And when he lost that 'burst to daylight' first step at a seam or hole in the blocking, the colts let him go.

What we haven't seen is any kind of play action or boot action where the stretch is a fake to Portis and JC hits a receiver open to the backside of the play.

That would freeze backside pursuit--backside pursiut is what kills the zone-stretch-- and give Portis a cutback angle.

Sorry for the scheme talk.

Will everyone stop acting like this doesn't happen anywhere else. Sellers hasn't blocked well this year. I'm tired of seeing him and "Sleepy" Davis miss blocks.

Posted by: dcwun | October 9, 2009 2:54 PM | Report abuse

I'm glad Portis punked Sellers. He drops a TD one week, misses YET ABOTHER block the next, and finally Portis had had enough against the Bucs.

If the coaches would hold the players accountable for failing to make BASIC PLAYS, maybe Portis would not have to do so.

F Medium. I want the coaches to light these guys up who cant make the simple plays.

snyder sees the jersey sales from portis number, and the amount of investment already sunk, and thats the players value.

whether portis has lost a step is not the main issue - its what he's being paid. last year, a number of rookie, cheaper running backs were breaking through. he's still pretty good (although second tier) but paid as if he's at the very top.

however, portis was extended - to reduce his portion of the cap space, they re-upped his contract (with a huge second signing bonus, pro-rated over the remainder of the new contract term). now, they are stuck again.

the dissension or tension arises from losing in a losing culture.

From the Times, Wynn is active this week I get...sigh, this sucks....not jumping ship, but man I wish they'd get themselves right:

Clinton Portis and Mike Sellers went to the 2008 Pro Bowl as a backfield tandem, but WRC-4 reported that they got into a heated argument this week at Redskin Park about the latter's blocking for the former, one that required teammates separating them.

The Redskins declined to allow Portis and Sellers to talk to reporters on Friday and coach Jim Zorn said the incident was blown out of proportion.

"This is just how a team goes," Zorn said, not very convincingly. "There's no fisticuffs. There's no pushing and shoving. I don't really know what the discussion was [about]. These guys are like brothers. They care about each other."

Cornelius Griffin is questionable with the left elbow he injured against Tampa Bay. Fellow defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery (knee) will miss a fifth straight game. Offensive tackle Chris Samuels will start despite being limited in practice this week with knee and shin ailments. Kedric Golston will start if Griffin can't play.

"It's hurting me," said Griffin, who missed at least one game in four of his previous five seasons with the Redskins. "It's going to be a game-time decision. I'll do my best to go out and help the team, but at the same time I don't want to hurt us."

Linebacker Rocky McIntosh missed practice to attend a funeral.

Portis is a higher performer than so many on the roster. He is frusterated that others aren't making the same effort he is. Gibbs liked Portis because Portis is a hard-charging, "give-it-your-all" type player; those players need to be rewarded and their effort made an example of. Zorn is a sissy loser who can't motivate his team with force; only kindness. THIS TEAM NEEDS TO MAKE ITS PLAYERS PLAY DISCIPLINED BALL! Don't blame Portis for trying to make that happen. This is a horrible article that misses the point.

Unless you, JReid, can name names of who doesn't like Portis...This post is 100% irrelevant and speculation to just further separate fans/teams/management.

Windmill my a$$....

For all we know, the people mad at him prob are Betts, Rock, Mason, and Aldridge? I wonder why they would mad? hmmmm?

This is true. Somebody pointed it out earlier, but most of the playactions run by this offense seems to be fake delays or fake draw plays. Rarely has it looked like a genuine run attempt, or a hard charging Campbell faking it to a hard charging Portis.

The playactions at this point don't seem well designed, well executed, or a combination of the two. The misdirection is simply missing right now.

Portis is a d-bag.

I'm becoming more and more convinced this team would function much better without him.

Anyways, let the doom and gloom proceed up until Sunday. Then we'll find out if they have any fight left in them.

Of course, they could just...not be very talented, or any good - a thought that many don't want to acknowledge, including the owner and VP.

A golum is a monster that consumes the wizard who creates it.

When you give a guy a boatload of guaranteed money, let him pull himself out of games, not practice, get more carries than justified, and insult his offensive without reprimand, you make a golum or arrogant out of control monster.

Now, the monster is about to consume the whole team.

Let's see. Sellers has one dropped TD and other dropped catches this year. He missed the block on the famous 4th and 1 play but gets a freakin pass by the media. Not to mention all the missed block assignments so far this year??? And he gets a pass?

So, when did the media get to pick and choose whose fault it is?

Because Sellers is the most friendliest guy in the Clubhouse. Him and JC17. And neither of them get bashed like Portis does. All Portis does is go out and produces 1,500 yard seasons.....

I think it's high time we had some accountability in the locker room. And I am refreshed to hear at least someone on that team is as P*ssed Off about the level of concentration being shown in games as we are.

He hasn't post good numbers in a while, though I grant the O line has a lot to do with that...still, Portis is at his worst when things go south...hence, all his finger pointing every time the O suffers (which is often these past years).

Again, there is a reason he isn't a captain on this team, despite his tenure and his past production, and meaning to the team.

This anti-Portis stuff is ridiculous. Mike Sellers LOST US THE DETROIT GAME! He almost LOST US THE ST. LOUIS GAME! And somehow, because Jason Reid and some team mates don't like that a football player has a personality and gets some preferential treatment, that he is somehow the real problem.

The three best players on our team are 1) London Fletcher, 2) Albert Haynesworth, and 3) Clinton Portis. Everyone else kind of sucks.

I think Sellers should have been pulled too. Honestly, I believe that. And what is the matter with a player saying so? Zorn was an idiot for not pulling him.

There's 60 players in that locker room. They're not all going to get along. My guess is you could find unnamed sources who say Portis is great teammate too. Printing one anonymous side to an inter-office pissing match is tabloid garbage.

It's bad enough we have such a train wreck for a football team but the least the Post could do is assign a professional as the "Insider".

Please.

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are players that have EARNED the right to voice their opinions on who plays and who doesn't, not you... and why is that? Can't help but think that Portis performance is related to his lack of practice. This relates to working with Sellers and also not hitting the creases that he used to hit. I don't think he has slowed down that much but if you are not out there practicing at full speed you can't expect to feel those openings and get that quick burst too daylight. If he will not practice put who ever is running in practice in there and see if they can hit it. The rest of the league practices for a reason, it's to get the timing and teamwork down.

Generally speaking, ESPN analysts aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, although there might be an exception or two. We've heard this story before - not adapting the play selection to (a) fit the capabilities of the resources at hand and (b) provide the best chance for success against the schemes the defense is using.

There are many theories being bruited about as to why the Skins offense is offensive. What I would do and what the FO probably has already done is have a panel of experts (consulting firms whose specialty is just this type of thing) independently evaluate the O performance using tapes and stats and then sift through their reports to see what common themes might emerge about the root cause of the problems. After all, if a "fresh set of eyes" helps, a "fresh set of a set of eyes" would help even more, wouldn't it.

I mean, how can you take any facet of football that the Redskins run seriously?

Let me know when the defense can get their asses off the field consistently on 3rd downs.

Let me know when the receivers can get open and run a f'ing NFL route.

Let me know when Portis can make a damn cut-back on a run again and take it to the house.

Let me know when Sellers stops dropping the ball, fumbling the ball, and starts to pick up his blocks.

It sad, probably the worst player on the team last year, is probably this years best.

I think even he would realize that writing is that is just fueling the fire. My bet is the source is a player who has been around the locker room for a while...just a guess though...

Clinton Portis has always been a whiner and continues to be one. Both he and the GM need to be fired now, because it sends the wrong message when incompetence and lack of effort are continuously rewarded, of course this wont happen as long Snyder refuses to grow up and realize he is no Rooney or Jones and doesn't have the skills or patience to ever reach their level.

Posted by: clintolive2 | October 9, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Usually you see a team (baseball, basketball, etc) get fired up and play with intensity after a fight with the OTHER team. Fights happen on the practice field all the time but this seems a bit different. Calling for another player to be benched just seems like bad mojo. I don't see anything good coming from this.

Posted by: skinswest | October 9, 2009 3:27 PM | Report abuse

Yeah JReid is in a tough spot.

It is "news" because it relates to the redkins and validates his idea (and alot of others) that the Skins are at the point of implosion.

There was no veil on it at all. He is basicaolly calling out Portis for thinking he is above everyone else on the team.

I backed up Portis for speaking out about what he thought was a problem for the team (asking for Sellers to be seated).

Looks like JReid was doing the same thing and I beat him up.

My hypocracy knows no bounds.

Has anyone checked if anyone is supporting CPo's stance in any of this?

He didn't call out Sellers to other players, did he? He asked his coach to make him more productive. You've never done that in your career? Asked if a better performer could be put on a particular task.

I see it all the time.

And I see a lot of comments supporting my position today. Nice to see I'm not alone in my opinions.

Man some people must have been born with some strange genes ... please explain to me how avoiding practice reps, necessary to be able to perform plays in games is DISCIPLINED BALL!? Are you that blind! Samuels IS THE MOST valuable player on this offense and he probably won't last the season because he is out there practicing? People wanted Pete Kendall (who was a very effective guard) cut because he didn't practice on Wednesdays? And now you are giving a free pass to Portis, supposedly the "money guy" who has only scored 2 TDs in 13 games with around a 3.5 yds/carry average!!!? Moron.

Prolly starts at the top with arrogant meddling ownership, goes through Cerrato to a nice guy coach who never should have been selected by the arrogant owner and his beige-nose crony, to the QB picked against all odds by the can-do-no-wrong Gibbs. People who stay with this combo of stupid, arrogant, and weak have only themselves to blame. Keep hoping, folks.

How effective is Portis as a running back? He's currently 35th in both of the footballoutsiders' ratings, DYAR and DVOA (roughly, total value to the team versus value per play). That's way, way off from last season, when Portis ranked third in one and 8th in another. And last season he had a particularly strong start, so the contrast is even more startling.

What's wrong? Your guess is as good as mine. But I think it's worth noting that the Skins' running attack last season was notable for the number of runs under 10 yards, as opposed to, say, the Giants or the Vikes. To the stats guys, this suggests that the blocking is mainly responsible for the yardage, as opposed to the efforts of the back. Which does fit with the observation that as the o-line broke down with injuries in the second half of 2008, productivity fell off the proverbial cliff.

Gibbs and Saunders viewed Portis and Betts as fairly close in ability, while the Zorn regime seemed to think (at least at the beginning of last season) that Portis was something special. He's certainly been productive, but maybe the blockers should have been getting more credit for both Portis and Betts.

Clinton seems to me to have the same limitations that backs like young guys like Ray Rice and Matt Forte have -- they really depend on their blockers.

I hear you...but I highly doubt JReid, who btw seems to be a lot less inflammatory that La Canfora, would print that line if the source was someone like Aldridge or Mason. I think even he would realize that writing is that is just fueling the fire. My bet is the source is a player who has been around the locker room for a while...just a guess though...

Based on other posts and his chat sessions I think you're giving JR too much credit. I'm sure he's not a bad guy but I believe he's out of his depth here.

I appreciate his willingness to say what's on his mind regardless of who's toes it may step on, that takes a certain amount of courage in his line of work, but I think he carries it to a point where he has lost sight of fairness and objectivity.

"F anonymous sources."

Covering a dysfunctional franchise is an uneviable gig. Either the fans will hate you for being honest or your boss will scorn you when someone else reports the dirty secrets you're trying to hide.

Remember how we all loved Dexter Manley and Riggo's follies when this team was terrorizing the NFL?

None of these stories will matter if the offense starts scoring and this team gets on a winning streak Sunday.

Portis's reluctance to play in pre-season games is the reason why the Dead-skins never get off to a good start.

Bench Portis and play Betts until Portis sees the light that he is not the only running back on the team.

Sellers didn't blow the play in Detroit, it was a bad call. Portis started out in the right backfield and went left over Samuels. This is a play that needed six inches, was going to have nine defenders on the line charging hard, and we take the "long way home".

Portis is a primadonna. Has been since he arrived here, probably was before.

If we've learned anything from teams like Pittsburgh and New England, there is no room for attitudes. How much better are the Giants without Tikki Barber (a guy I loved) and Shockey (I guy I can't stand)? Eleven guys working together work better than eleven going in different directions.

I'm sorry the mayor is an idiot on this one. seems to me that the fake mayor is trying to drum up fake drama to cause Skins management even more problems. Its full scale attack the Skins now.

Teammates fight, players don't like players for all sorts of reasons I'm certain some of those same players who don't like Portis are jealous he got paid as well which always is a bone of contention.

Portis plays harder on gamedays more than the majority of this team. He plays tailback which is as emmit smith put it is like having a bunch of car accidents every week.

so this notion that he should be practicing when he's getting crashed into 20+ times a game is petty and just the mayors weak attempt to link Portis to the management of the team as a sympton of disfunction.

of course teams management is a mess has been for awhile but please lets not make this a referendum on Portis as the tool to sow more discontent with the team.

I'm betting those same players cheer Portis on Sundays for playing hurt more than most players would attempt.

we want accountablity and if Sellers who missed blocks in the rams and Lions game is messing up and shopuld have his position reviewed as a source of concern so be it.

Portis didn't run to the media to dog sellers he went straight to the coaches to say look Sellers is hurting us. I have no probelm with that.

thats holding Sellers accountable.

add the missed blocks with the dropped td pass and Portis has a point that sellers may need to indeed be subbed in for.

I hope 2010 will be an uncapped year. Instead of going on a spending spree, I hope we trade a bunch of players and take the cap hit during next season. That way we can start fresh with a new GM and coach in 2011.

Thx cL. I'll take that as a complement.

My beef is....The Media is choosing, ahead of time, the point of implosion for this team and only post stuff to back up their argument. They go out and look for stuff to back it up, but not to dispell it. And the magority of onlookers have yet to break free from the media's hypnosis (ala the Matrix). I have been free since 9/11 and enjoy it very much.

JReid already did it earlier by saying he realistically thinks they may not win another game. How about letting it happen 1st (channeling in my inner Greg)? No one gets bonus points for a correct prediction. Only ones who win are the WaPo shareholders.

So, when we are in the playoffs this year, make sure you (cL), JReid, and RedDMV keep y'all SJKs away......

love the skins. team of my childhood, source of much joy during the 80's and 90's. Guess what? It's over. Angelos made the O's a laughingstock and impossible to root for. Snyder has achieved the first and is working on the second. The only thing that kept this ship from sinking over the past 5 yrs was Gibbs, who stabilized it and provided sanity for a few yrs. now it is over. Panthers. Coming off a bye week at home.

Skins. Sherm Lewis. Portis-Sellers. Good thing there aren't any distractions so the team can focus on following up a WIN with what would be their first win on the road.

Sorry man, but get a clue. Portis is reported to be out of shape this season and hasn't done anything in the first 4 games against 3 terrible opponents to merit going to the coaching staff and demanding a player be benched. He doesn't have a problem trashing his own coach on a radio show, throwing his offensive line under the bus to the media last preseason, etc.

He's a locker room cancer -- talent be damned.

Other thing of note about our blocking: for 2008, the Skins ranked 5th in run blocking and 15th in pass blocking (basically a measure of sacks allowed). Four games into the '09 season, we're 20th and 21st.

im not buying this crap from the WaPo, was the team source that said some players have grown tired of CP actually a player?

i got no problem with Portis calling out a player for F'ing up, i'd be pissed if CP took it to the media but he didn't, this was "leaked" out of the locker room.

i swear to GOD that i know more about football and the redskins than anyone who covers them for the Post, Sellers has been doing this all year, CP is pissed Sellers head hasn't been in the game all season and its the 5th game coming up, do some research WaPo before you call CP out, he RIGHT in this instance and what he did... there's nothing wrong with it, he told the coach his opinion on what he's repeatedly seen all year, big deal

this should have stayed in the locker room, but the WaPo would rather stir up Skins fans for more traffic

Posted by: destewar | October 9, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

Yeah this is seriously ridiculous... Bad reporting in my opinion to the utmost degree. JReid knows the implication of this post yet doesn't think twice to post it! Come on man, you seriously think the main offensive guys on the team are upset with Portis calling someone out?! There are mini skirmishes throughout the season that stay IN HOUSE! Whoever leaked this is clearly upset for reasons that really should be investigated. You think Cooley, Campbell, Moss, or any of the O line have the same opinions??? Even if they did, do you really think those guys would tell "sources" haha. Hell no!

Mr. Mayor, you should know that this is negative publicity and you are spinning it pretty hard. Why did you discuss Portis' contract numbers?? Let's not forget he is getting paid heavy next year because he took a pay cut the previous years to make sure the team was under the salary cap. It also allowed management to sign other big name guys like Big Al and London Fletcher! If you want to blame someone, blame Snyder for the pore financial management/distribution.

Mr. Mayor why didn't you discuss how these two guys are close friends and MORE IMPORTANTLY maybe Portis is right? Portis was right in calling out the O line last year and it produced beautifully until the inevitable injury bug came around.

The rest of the nation is going to hear this and then blow it up even more. This only adds icing to the cake if you are a redskins hater. You should fairly report issues like this rather than jumping the gun....

aight I'm done ranting. Let's hope Portis lit a fire in Seller's @$$ and he might block the right guy!

Posted by: REXskins | October 9, 2009 3:50 PM | Report abuse

OK, now the gloves come off. Now I see where this is heading. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the Portis/Sellers thing was such a big issue. I mean who doesn't talk sh!t in the locker room and when you mess up, you do get called out by your teammates. Big deal, every locker room in every sport has this going on everyday.

But this latest post from Reid, explains it. He's reaching. Maybe Portis pissed him (Reid) off don't know. But this was the paragraph that really throw my hands up in the air: "Portis had played through pain, runs hard in games and has been effective in blitz pick-up -- but so what?" So what? Really? I wish Reid would stop typing in the air conditioned room and get off his fat a$$ and try it. And I'm not asking for him to take on a rush from a DE or a blitzing SAM, try blocking in on a corner blitz, I would love to see that.

I'm quite sure Sellers gave Portis his two cents on how Portis has executed through the season as well. So what? In football and Reid I hope you read this:

RB/TB are always going to be critical of Fullbacks/H-Backs and the O-line.

QBs are always going to be critical of the O-line/OC/RB/WR
WRs are always going to be critical of the QB/OC

And they are critical with each other in the cafeteria, the film room, on the practice field, and in the weight room. In rare instances it can happen on the sidelines during a game. Sometimes punches are thrown. So what its FOOTBALL its nothing personal!

DS,

Portis allegedly went to the coaches and demanded that Sellers be taken out of the game. If true -- here's the problem with that: IT'S NOT HIS JOB! His job is to run the ball and score TD's. His job is NOT coaching, or telling the coaches what to do. But that's the problem with CP -- he thinks he can do stuff like that. Many athletes with big ego's do. But maybe CP should just focus on doing his job -- which even you should admit he's not doing right now -- and don't give me his 3.9 yds / carry against lowly TB...

Actually...I got the best of him.

It's a distraction that the professionals miss their blocks, drop TD passes, can't throw a pass accurately, can't tackle accurately, and catch an INT that's in their hands.

The stuff the Media puts out there is an additional distraction. But this ain't the olden days. The majority of their dirty laundry gets aired out all the time. Then the distraction is created because that's all the beat guys and bloggers and national media wants to talk about.

I just went back through the old "Snyder and Gibbs Press Conference" story on RI, and paged my way forward through the blogs there as the FO went about picking a new head coach.

It's kind of depressing, actually, recalling the loss of Sean Tayor (RIP) and the process following Gibbs' departure.

I think Tony Dungy pinpointed the problem best:

Dungy had a different view.

"Well, I'm not going to blame it all on the quarterback. He threw for a lot of yards [340 in Sunday's 19-14 loss to Detroit] today; they're having trouble scoring," Dungy said. "But I think it goes to a bigger thing, maybe an organizational thing.

"It's always new free agents, new players, all-star guys. They've got to build a team concept there ... and it's not always getting the best players, it's building a good team, building a team that everyone has confidence in, and right now they don't have confidence."

Well said, coach.

I understand that reporting only the negative is going to get you more clicks, but there is certainly some good going on with the Skins as well. Granted, its almost all off the field charity work, but some mention of that somewhere would be nice to read.

I mean, I know it's a one way street and if I want all sunshine and lollipops I should just go to redskins.com/the redskins blog, I know this. I guess my point is that if you ONLY read the insider, you'll get such a terribly negative view of this team that it'd seem like there's nothing positive going on at all and all of the players are pissed off and negative.

CP was involved in a charity event to raise awareness for domestic violence. Santana was involved in a play60 united way event at a local dance theater. Its nice to hear that these guys are doing nice things outside of football, at least

Posted by: --swb | October 9, 2009 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Here is the problem, with have too many writers and posters with instant access via the internet blog so people are soo busy trying to have something juicy to say like Reid that they have resorted to selling negativity because it sells better. No one wants to read nor comment on the skins as a average team that is trying to improve. That does not sell. What sells is the perception that the skins are a troubled team thats only going to get worse by the minute. We are predicting loses and whats going to happen as a result of the losses two and three weeks ahead of the actual games. Some source is giving Reid blow by blow accounts of what is going on in the locker room by the minute and he is running out and reporting it in real time and we are all feeding into it. We treat the skins like they are a winless team 4 games into the season. We should realize that Jason has to sell a story to put food on his table therefore we should not take everything he reports seriously. He is just trying to sell a story to make a living. He cant sell normal stuff on a daily bases to readers. Thats too boring. He needs something that catches your eye. So why not create a perception that the skins are in disarray, the team locker room is fractured and the coach is about to be canned at any moment if he loses. That sells better than an average 9-7, 8-8 team trying to improve and playing out their season with the hopes of being a 10-6 playoff team.

I have followed this team for many years. When I was a kid 9 was throwing the ball to 42.
This team is an absolute mess - it begins and ends with the little man at the top.
JKC negotiated some contracts but generally the football guys ran the team. Hire a coordinator and when nobody else wants the job make him a gead coach. He has to use the previous coaches running game and the defense is already set. Zorn isn't setting the world on fire but if Shanahan comes in is it going to be better?? Last years Broncos?????

Jason is becoming tabloid like. I think he reads these blogs and realizes that right now people want to vent about the skins not being an elite team so he feeds into the readers negativity by trying to give us something negative about the skins each day. Its becoming ridiculous to read the post each day knowing that although nothing has happened on the field since the last game one way or another the WP writers manage to come up with a new negative article about the skins from Monday through sunday morning. They do it to keep you fans reading their articles and fans read this crap and get all worked up against their own team. No one says good luck sunday or I hope they win anymore. Its just I hate this guy, I hate that guy, this guy should be fired or cut, that guy is a moron, that guy is an idiot. This is what we have become as skins fans. Haters of our own team. Its like the internet has become the official place to hate people and be negative. I guess anonymity sometimes brings out the worse in all of us. How about GO SKINS!!! for a change. Portis is a football player, he is not running for public office.

Truly, the '09-'10 Redskins are all about the pursuit of excellence.

The D-baggery flows - if you will - straight from owner on down to part-time running backs.

Next up: DHall vs. "Donnie" Marko M. Let the steel cage match begin!

Oh, wait, Donnie Marko would have to see the practice field with the first team...oh well, maybe next year. No worries, this dysfunctional organization ain't goin' nowhere! Plenty of time for backstabbing and in-fighting for years to come.

Everyday in every way, one step closer to Raiders East. Are we there yet?

Why punch Portis when can knock him down by breathing on him.

Sellars has 2 bricks for hands, so a punch would most surely hurt a lot.

Posted by: dclifer97 | October 9, 2009 4:32 PM | Report abuse

So why not create a perception that the skins are in disarray, the team locker room is fractured and the coach is about to be canned at any moment if he loses. That sells better than an average 9-7, 8-8 team trying to improve and playing out their season with the hopes of being a 10-6 playoff team.

Please tell me how you measure a team or players overall performance in 4 games or less of a 16 game season? One poster said that the team would be better off without portis. Where have I heard that kind of remark before by fans? Hmmmmmmmmm.. Oh yea, now I remember, they use to say that about Gilbert Arenas. Do Wizards fans still think that they are a better team without Gilbert? Fans are usually more wrong about their teams than right. Until you show me a player on the skins roster at RB who is clearly better than CP the team is not better off without him. Ask the cowboys are they better off without T.O. right now.

So whatever JR tells you about the skins is true? He is not paid to be right, he is paid to sell a story. Its like how ESPN uses Brett Farve to sell its programming. When he plays good, its a story, when he plays bad, its a story, when he takes a leak, its a story, if he is not playing switch to T.O and its a story. Its called selling.

Sellers has been terrible this year. Whined all offseason about not being paid enough, gets his payday, then stinks up the joint so far this season.

He's not paid to tell a story, ged0386...honestly dude. Of course the Post wants people to read about the Skins from their paper, but if you haven't noticed they don't need to sell anything to us fans. We sell out FedEx and buy jerseys like hotcakes even though the team ranges from mediocre to bad every year...trust me if JReid was telling stories and making stuff up, he wouldn't be here...

You "broke free of Media," after 9/11 yet you manage to read RI and post here. I see your point tho, I HATE the way the Media flew those airplanes into those buildings, and then Al Qaeda reported it.

If you are really hypnotized by Media, I suggest you adjust the contrast on your TV, read differing opinions, do your own investigating, and some homework to see which media tend to be accurate most often.

You might even, as a little exercise, come up with supporting material to back up your unsubstantiated claim that the "media" only posts stuff to back up their argument that the team is imploding.

for all Portis's supposed closeness with Schneider, his pall never bought/drafted him significant line upgrades, and so Portis has wasted his health and the prime years of his career just trying to get to the line of scrimmage. He got the money, but he'll not get the glory.

Just face it - stop drinking the KoolAide. They're right and you're wrong - they have access to the issues and the stories are being corroborated by other sources. Portis is the guy who wants to win ALL THE TIME.
Please read the below TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE statments add Davis and Cooley to this list too for blocking reasons.
BTW Seller got an extra 600 grand from Snyder for doing a good job and that was reported in this blog.

'm glad Portis punked Sellers. He drops a TD one week, misses YET ABOTHER block the next, .
If the coaches would hold the players accountable for failing to make BASIC PLAYS, maybe Portis would not have to do so. F Medium. I want the coaches to light these guys up who cant make the simple plays.

Portis whines a lot for a guy who hasn't done very much at all since the midway point of last season. He's the worst starting back in the NFC East and Sellers should have clocked his A$$.

Wish he would be traded. But there is only one team in the league dumb enough to pay him his current salary ...

Tell me what has Sellers done? other than miss a gimme td pass against the Rams and a crucial momentum turning block against the sorry azz Lions now let me say this Portis may be a diva(in more ways than one!) but he is a still a very good running back Sellers has played poorly since the season started, this after getting a hefty contract extension, now Portis was wrong if he went behind Sellers back and if the players as Jason Reid reported have a problem with CP then should collectively go to the powers that be and state their case if not then shut the fu&k up and play ball.

This is a soap opera that the local media just feed off of. As far as Sellers and Portis winning cures everything.
Sellers cried and got a raise then he goes out and drops a sure touchdown and he blocks the wrong guy in the Detroit game.

The load Portis has carried for this team allows him to call people out maybe just not in this way.

Who plays harder then Portis ofensively and defensively

Hello to All Suffering, Burgandy and Gold Bleeding Friends, This story seems to realize our fondest dreams - BLOW IT UP!!! only we have our own suicide bombers inside the very unit that is failing to produce on Sundays. Really, I am damn sick of the Portis act, he has not produced for two years but it all rolls uphill to the owner and his butt-buddy. Let's not draft for need, let's draft for marketability. "Vinnie, just how many jerseys did Jacoby or Grimm sell? Let's think SEXY!!!" A decent guy like Jim Zorn gets pushed too far by the Boss and now he gets submarined, as if he had something to do with the accumulation of talent.
Stop apologizing for management and Clinton, without an epiphany and a moment of clarity by Snyder, this proud franchise and it's loyal fans are the new "Aints".

To say that this team is dysfunctional and in complete disarray would be a comical misrepresentation of the fact.

Sellers made a racist comment. He's a racist. He's like the Michael Steele, the Karl Malone, of the Redskins locker room, always putting down the players of color. You've seen him do it during the other player's interviews. One report even claims that Sellers used the "N" word.

Portis was only trying to stick up for his own race against the racist rantings of the racist running back.

Racism was involved.

It was all a big misunderstanding due to race.

PS - Go Dallas!

shaunsherman12, this team would function better without CP? Are you crazy?!?!?! Thats like that nonsense that the Cowboys are a better functioning offense without T.O.!!!

I wish people would stop blaming the best player who happens to speak his mind. CP gives it his all and has been doing it since college. He is a proven commodity. Where is the criticism of Laron Landry, Chris Horton or Derrick Dockery in being able to sustain his blocks. I'm sick of people hating on the guy with the most confidence and shows it. CP gets it down and just went to the Pro Bowl but you wouldn't know it the way some fans all local sports writers pile on CP. Its like a lot of jealously of his money, success and supreme self-confidence. The later is what I love MOST about him. Its what made him the nasty running back he was at The U and the record breaking running back in the NFL. Don't we have like a ridiculous winning percentage when CP gets 100 yards in a game. Give him the freaking rock and shut up!!!

WHo cares if unnamed sources don't like portis...I don't care if portis doesn't practice he is not a rookie and he is injured so he needs the rest. he can run in his sleep put him on the giants, colts, or steelers right now and he leads the league in rushing for sure. f-mike sellars, jreid and bmitch so what we have caveman sellars it isn't so easy a caveman can do it obviously if you are dropping crucial passes and missing block and confusing plays. Portis is just a gamer who loves football and realizes that the skins winning percentage without him is very low. AND a injured PORTIS still beats ALL of the healthy running backs on our roster even BETTS who is majorly overrated and does not need to be the dedicated 3rd down back PORTIS needs to be back in there he is TOUGHER and A MUCH BETTER RUNNER in short yardage he PUNISHES a la S. TAYLOR. I'm OUT U CP HATERS get on his jock cause he will have a BIG game SUNDAY!

Wah Wah Wah. Who cares if Portis asked that Sellars be benched? Quite frankly, the guy is totally overrated. He can't catch very well, and his blocking is not particularly impressive - he's no Tom Rathman. And that isn't just based on one 4th and 1 play, just my general observation. I think people make more about the idea of Mike Sellars than anything based on his actual play. The "idea" is he's this huge tough guy who tears people up on gameday....but not really, if you're honest about it. He often makes only one block and then is either distracted by that, or goes down. He's not someone who lays someone out and then moves onto the next defender.

On another note, is it true that Sally Jenkins lives in NYC and is only in the DC area 1 day a week? lol

Posted by: OldManGibbs | October 10, 2009 11:52 AM | Report abuse

PS agree with comment above - good article. Better than your typical nonsense when discussing Kelly, Thomas, and Davis where you cite the same gripes over and over again with nothing new. By the way, JReid, since we can't typically see the whole field watching a game on TV, has anyone done an analysis to see if Kelly or Thomas are frequently open when they run patterns, and perhaps Campbell just isn't throwing to them at all? Or are they usually covered (i.e. they're unable to get open consistently?)?

Posted by: OldManGibbs | October 10, 2009 11:55 AM | Report abuse

It's obvious from your entries over the last few months that you have it out for Portis and are looking for any excuse to jump on him and say he's washed up.

This is not to say that Portis may not deserve criticism for this incident, merely that you have lost all credibility when it comes to any thing he's involved with.

Did he give you a mean look in the locker room once?

Posted by: ReadCasey | October 10, 2009 1:50 PM | Report abuse

It really is a simple question: how many starting running backs practice during the week?

I have answer according to over 10 college and high school friends currently in the NFL:

NOT many. To back it up, look at a story NFL Network did a few weeks back highlighting Jones-Drew. He hasnt even be a true number one starter until this year and he said he has hardly been able to practice his entire career. When they came back after the feature, Marshall Faulk said he did not know of any running backs who practice all week. He said he was lucky once that entire season during the Rams Super Bowl year. Michael Irvin followed it up by saying Emmitt didnt practice much.

Practice for a running back is very overrated. It is the easiest position to play in all of football - Run where guys are not, keep your legs moving, dont fumble, and pickup blocks in the passing game. Jim Zorn CHOSE to go the media and make this an issue last season because he wanted more control over a locker room that will follow Clinton Portis to the gates of hell - as rightfully they should since he twice put the team on his back in late season runs to the playoffs.

Is Clinton overpaid? Yes
Is Clinton a tad slower? yes - atfer 9,000+ yards in the league, every back is
Is Clinton still capable of 1500 yards? Yes. You put him on the Vikings, Giants, Jets, and Cowboys and CP is leading the NFL in rushing. Warren Sapp said as much on Inside the NFL.
Is Clinton one of the last of a dying breed of workhorse backs? Cant name more than 3 others: AP, Turner, Forte.
Should he have called the booth and asked for Mike Sellers to get benched? No
Has Sellers deserved a benching? YES. Doc Walker said quite frankly he hasnt seen Sellers play an NFL game since last season.

Point is, the amateur coaching staff (Zorn and Sherman Smith) has overblown the Portis not practicing issue and made it easy pickings for a controversy starved media corp in town. True signs of QB needing the spotlight. It makes Clinton either the savior or devil himself. Blame Zorn for creating this miss rather than embracing his most talented offensive player. Love Clinton or hate him, he isnt going anywhere.
