R. Thomas Likely Out for Season

Right guard Randy Thomas is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a torn right triceps, according to multiple NFL sources. Team officials said Coach Jim Zorn will comment on Thomas' status Monday, when Thomas is expected to undergo an MRI.

"To fill Randy's shoes is gonna be tough, and whoever steps in has to be ready to play," left guard Derrick Dockery said. "It's gonna be hard, we're gonna miss him, but that's just part of the National Football League. Injuries happen. We just have to find a way to rebound."

Center/guard Will Montgomery filled in for Thomas on Sunday. Chad Rinehart, a third-round pick a year ago who has been inactive for both games this season, would be another option. Dockery was asked whether the team has a fill-in who could play up to Thomas's level.

"Anything is possible," Dockery said. "You just have to have faith and belief. It's gonna be hard and difficult, no doubt about it. Randy's one of the best guards in the National Football League, so it's gonna be a real challenge, but we have to find somebody to do it."

Thomas tore his left triceps on Sept. 17, 2007; he underwent surgery and missed 10 games. That year, the team opted not to place him on injured reserve, which would have ended his season, and he returned to the lineup Dec. 6. However, he reinjured the arm and was placed on IR on Dec. 13.

I hope so. 16 games is always too short. I hope it's the full 19 games. I that what you're predicting?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | September 20, 2009 5:15 PM | Report abuse

Campbell: Played great. Two TD passes dropped (DT and Caveman). Made plays when things broke down. One Def holding in the end zone not called.

Refs: Embarrassed themselves. Jarmon late hit, Tana fumble(booth overruled the field), ARE no call in endzone, and the piece de resistance: Griffin or Golston def holding against an opposing interior lineman????? R U F'ING KIDDING ME??????

Defense: Came through with big stops when it mattered. They bent, never broke, and slapped that a$$ at key moments.

Zorn: What a GD JOKE!!! His play calling, which I did not think could POSSIBLY get any worse after last week, set a new all time low. Outside runs from 1st and 2nd and goal at least half a dozen times? CP pass after two of the afore mentioned no gain sweeps??? Another wide run on third and three(boot leg or play action would hjave gone in in a walk IMO)?

Right now, this team's largest weakness is the Head Coach and there is not a second place anywhere in sight. He is lapping the field. Period. He is LUCKY the D bailed him out from the HORRIFIC go for it vice FG late. You have to kick the field goal there to force Rams to get a TD. And then he runs yet another wide run on 4th?? Idiotic, at best.

It is not like this was totally unexpected. We have had an OL go down each of the last several seasons.

However, we have done little to mitigate that risk and that is on Vinny and Danny.

Benjamin Franklin said the following:

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

I think that it definitely applies here.

Heyer + whoever else on the right side = Redskins are screwed beyond belief.

Any team playing the Redskins should just overload that side and blitz them to hell. Zorn will have that shell shocked look of Spurrier.

Redskins lose every game from here on out.

We get a good draft pick.

Shanahan or Holmgren accepts the job offer because they know we have high draft picks

I'm shocked the over the hill, hanging by a thread, no solid backups or groomed draft picks, barely still average offensive line is already getting thinned out. It's going to be another long season Redskin fans! They are already unwatchable and I don't see it getting better.

Next season: new coach, new QB. Book it! And, hopefully if the team has any sense which is doubtful, about 2/3 offensive linemen drafted. Time to look for a CP replacement as well.

I watch Adrian Peterson a lot being that I live in Minneapolis now. That dude has explosion like nobody else. The point being, CP has zero explosion left in his game. AP makes CP look like a grandfather on the field.

I think the best thing for this season is some sort of Offensive consultant. Play-calling in the red zone is atrocious. When even Fox's lowest rung announcers are calling for the fade to Kelly, it's really bad.

Dan Snyder clearly has Clinton Portis in his fantasy football league, how else can you explain running it on frist and second down every snap this season in the Red Zone.

Teams that have confidence/like their QB (Dallas, New Orleans, New England etc) seem to throw on first, play action on second and throw on 3rd (if necessary).

To Zorns credit the predictable play calling outside the red zone got better. I suppose the Skins are lucky they have these two games v Rams and Lions to fix things.

Posted by: hakimallen | September 20, 2009 5:28 PM | Report abuse

Lets go Rinehart. This is why he is on the roster. Best to see if he is any kind of answer at all NOW against the Lions and Chiefs. IF he can pass muster, good deal. If not, release him, give it to Montgomery, and get another guy to come in.

Posted by: PAskinsfan17 | September 20, 2009 5:30 PM | Report abuse

No surprise here losing Thomas for the season. He was done last year. The only mistake is not drafting a solid O lineman this year - or last year for that matter.

So far, we've used a second round pick last year on a TE who was basically not needed and has so far been irrelevant, and a 3rd rounder this year on a CB who can't tell if his play book is upside-down or not.

One of those would have made a solid O-lineman.

Gotta hope Chad can fill in or someone else can step up. O line is gonna get worse as the season moves on. Tick Tock on Samuels knee.

Posted by: edvar | September 20, 2009 5:30 PM | Report abuse

If I'm Dan Snyder, I am seriously marching down into the lockerroom and chewing out JZ in front of everyone.

Then when I'm done with him, I'm calling the offense together and chewing them out in front of everyone.

Then when I'm done with that, I'm gonna find a mirror and chew myself out for putting together this joke of a team/coaching staff.

Then I'm gonna make Cerrato stand in the middle of the room while I take a leak on him.

The worst thing about the Redskin fan is their lack of compassion for it's current players and their injuries. Why would you wish injury on any player who play this game we all wish we could still play and love? I am not sure why people are upset at a win on this level. Do you know how hard it is to win in the NFL every week? You play each game one at a time and just win because at the end of the season you don't get anything extra by beating a team 40 to Zero. Three weeks from now you will see it's a win in the win column and you hope at that time you have more win than loses.

No team is a Super Bowl team in week two but all teams see what they need to work on to get to that point at the end of the season. We are 1 & 1 which is much better than 0 & 2 so be proud and hope we win next week....

Dude, ain't no "awesomeness" to LaRon Landry, except his potential. And he's been getting by on that alone for a minute now.

Dude whiffs on more tackles than a little bit. If his natural position is SS, shouldn't he be tackling with "awesomeness"?

Landry tries to go for the SportsCenter highlight hits. He just needs to make a solid tackle and STOP trying to be like the homie Sean Taylor.

You are probably one of the dumbest people I've spoken with before. What the hell is wrong with saying another team is better than my own team? It's the TRUTH.

Seriously, you are making this a huge deal, if you go back and look, my comment was totally fine. I basically made the comment because I was laughing at how bad the Eagles were losing, and how the Saints were good. So how do you turn that into me liking the Saints?

I don't know you long you've been a Skins fan

You do NOT want the Skins to win any worse than some of us diehard fans, for some of us, the Skins will always be our team, win or lose.
But to wish a bad injury on Jason Campbell?
To Wish a coma on Jim Zorn?

Do you even realize the evil of your heart?

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | September 20, 2009 5:39 PM | Report abuse

Oh, by the way, Detroit didn't look half bad today against Minnesota who are a much better team than us. Take away a pick by Stafford in Viking territory and an iffy chop block call that took back a 50 yard completion in the 4th and that game is much closer than the final score. Don't be surprised if next week we lose and/or have another struggle like today.

I'd take Stafford over Campbell in a heartbeat already. He makes rookie mistakes, but already looks like a real NFL QB. He is no Heath Schuler. Sanchez looks like a real QB as well. Campbell just lacks a pocket presence or QB IQ or something. Can't put my finger on it exactly, but whatever it is he doesn't have it. Whenever he has a game where you think it might be a turning point in his career, he reverts right back to the same old average Campbell.

peaceful, please take your ranting somewhere else.

Askinsfan, I don't think SSmith is a play caller either. I was shocked that JZ didn't have a clue, after all these years in the league, about clock management. I don't agree with the run calls "wide" near the goal line. Betts has to stay in bounds on 2nd down around the 5 yd line with 2:12 remaining. So call should be up the middle.

Posted by: frediefritz | September 20, 2009 5:52 PM | Report abuse

Some people in here are completely unintelligent.

First, to be a fan does not mean you can't criticize the team. Especially a team that has been as dysfunctional as this team has been since Snyder bought it. It's a testament to the fan base that people even still care enough to line Snyder's pockets with more cash.

Second, no matter how bad it is, to wish bad health and/or injury on people in the organization or other posters is pathetic. Get a life! It's just a game.

First, Peaceful2008, you need to change your name. That was a stupid, vicious statement, little boy. Second, losing Randy Thomas to injury is an annual happening for the Skins, this should be the last one. Third, this is one crushingly boring team. A pinochle tournament would be as exciting. Once again, Danny Pooh has given us nothing and wants us to pay more for it. He's nothing but a walking ego, greedy and needy at the same time. All I can say is Go Ravens!

Football is a game where injuries are expected, yet the Redskins spend up to the cap on the first string without concern about backup linemen. They have an old offensive line and we could see this coming. They could only manage 3 field goals against the Rams and they are relatively healthy. Wait until later this year.

Let the injuries flood-gate begin! This is just the beginning, people! This is the chance you take when you spend all your money on just the first stringers with no adequate backups. How many 9 to 7 games will the Redskins continue to win?

Been saying this for years. The worst part is when you know you have an old injury prone offensive line and you do nothing but add Dockery. Dockery plus two of those picks being O linemen would have made sense, but, alas, this is the SnyderSkins.

Attention Redskins Insider,

So far on this thread alone Peaceful2008 has called for terminal cancer to certain members of the organization, season ending injuries and comas for others, and thrown in derisive comments about "mexican" people.

If you find peaceful2008's comments offensive and borderline racist, please send an email to borenc@washpost.com and ReidJ@washpost.com and ask them to have his IP address blocked from posting to this site.

Only way to get him off here is if a lot of people make a point to contact the Post about it.

Thanks.

--- Don't know that the D is a whole lot better than last year yet, but clearly D is not the problem (anytime you can win a game when the offense doen not score a TD the defense must be doing something right, even against a bottom-feeder like the Rams).. But offense seems to be shaping up as the teams fatal flaw (still/again), and not gonna be easy turn that around with R.Thomas already out for the season .. Offense DID put together 4 sustained drives ,which I guess counts as progress of sorts for them, but couldn't close the deal on even one of those drives? Sheesh .. (so can we start wishing Zorn good luck with his next job yet? Probably Campbell too) ---

Dear Pete Kendall,

We're really really really sorry about that little non-re-signing misunderstanding. Bygones?

[Actually, other than the penalty, the guard Montgomery actually did not horrible ... they actually did get Portis to the second level up the middle and the pass protection was solid all day ... did anyone notice that, by the 3rd quarter, Jason Campbell had his first step up into the pocket for the season?]

Posted by: dcsween | September 20, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

What's everybody so upset about? One thing you knew coming into this season was that Randy Thomas was one smack away from being out of the league and now it happened. I mean, unless you're totally lifeless you knew this was going to happen.

It's not like this team was going to be within sniffing distance of contention. Look at the way they hired this clown Zorn. Nobody of any substance wanted anything to do with The Danny or the Vinny. Any half-baked offense on this team could propel them into the playoffs with the defense they have, but it's not to be.

So don't worry; it's 16 and out for the 2009 Redskins....

#1. R.Thomas Out
#2. Terrible Pass Protection & Run Offense
#3. Decrease in avg pts scored (...yes, we'll start putting up negative pts)
#4. J.Campbell Injured
#5. C.Portis gets 1.0 yards per carry
#6. 1-7 Record Half-way thru the Season
#7. J.Zorn fired in mid-season
#8. 1-15 Record
#9. Somehow trades away 1st Round pick
#10. Vinnie is promoted to Head Coach in Offseason

You hate to wish someone get injured but losing Thomas might be a good thing. Now, we can have three starting lineman under the age of 30. Thomas's contract is heavy but with next year's salary cap free year, it should be easy to get rid of him so we can get someone in the draft.

No surprise here. A team has about a 100% chance of having a starting lineman seriously injured in the first half of the season. The biggest rap against the O-line has been the lack of depth not so much the competence of the starting five. A third round pick with O-line depth so thin is inactive one year later?? Nice pick Dan and Vin...

You can root for the team but root against Danny and Vinnie at the same time. As a 49 year fan of the team (yep - Eddie LaBaron, Johnny O, Dick James, etc.) that's the only way I have been able to continue viewing the train wreck.

Off last year, I'm glad the 'SKINS played well enough to win, but I'm surely not pleased that we did not dominate a clearly inferior team. Too dammed many penalties and turnovers kept St. LOUIS in the game.

MONTGOMERY drew one penalty, but looked as good today as he did during the x-season. And he played out of position at RG. I knew THOMAS was done. I believe he will call it a career. SAMUELS is next, but his departure is not imminant by any means.

Still, we need two o-line draftees in the second and fourth rounds next year. You do not want to see RINEHART filling in for either THOMAS or MONTGOMERY. I believe ED WILLIAMS should play before RINEHART despite CHAD's badd-azz chin whiskers.

Still believe 'SKINS should pick CB #1 in 2010. If we can do something about CAMPBELL during the off-season in FA so be it. Otherwise, keep him through 2010 then draft a #1 QB.

Did you see the route DEVIN THOMAS ran down the side-line when he made the out-of-bounds catch? Too close to out-of-bounds, and smothered by the DB. Why didn't he run a little more inside the side-line so he could fade out a bit and stay in-bounds while making the catch? The announcers laid it on CAMPBELL, but I think JASON would have put it in-bounds if there had been any room to manouver.

I gotta' believe MARKO MITCHELL would have run a correct route and made the catch in-bounds. He is a smart receiver. THOMAS's route-running looks as dumb as owl-shyt. Oh hell, I'm just pyssed that he didn't make the catch in-bounds.

Anyway, we won. No need for recriminations. I'll let the coaches do that. Maybe ROBERT HENSON would like to critique his teammates play since he so good in that regard where the fans are concerned.

And yes, I saw DANO warn off JIM on the play-clock thing. Makes me wonder who's in charge of the zoo.

You do know bloggers, SPAGNOLO would be the REDSKINS head-coach if DAN SNYDER was a JACK KENT COOKE-type owner. But DANO just can't stay out of the kitchen, and too many cooks.....well, you get the idea why SPAGNOLO and every other potential head-coach worthy of the name avoids WASHINGTON's franchise like the plague.

Voila, offensive co-ordinator to head coach. Don't be too hard on JZ. He's in over his head, and knows it.

I gotta say, Zorn is in over his head with the play calling... Probably the "coaching," too.

Time for the Danny to get all Snyderfied on his tookus and make Danny Smith Head Coach. Let the Offensive Coordinator (whatshisface - I forget, but he does collect a paycheck) call the plays. It's not too late. Zorn is getting worse. He's lost his mind. He has actually driven himself insane.

Somebody stop him.

Has anyone noticed how the Giants got three young wideouts, that they plugged into their offense, who are scorching defenses at will in the NFC East?

I wonder if their "Coach" actually "Coached" them into the playbook and onto the field.

WHAT is so hard about that?!?!

I believe Zorn is killing this team. Bad play calling, Lack of Coaching. That's all it really takes.

Sad. What a waste of talent and fan base.

PS - And Zorn seems like a pretty nice guy. I don't dislike him. I just think he's too cerebral for football.

No more ex-QB coaches!
Defensive ex-players, only!

ex-QBs=
Norv Turner (team comes out flat in big games)
Steve Spurrier (will not change blocking scheme no matter how much the QB gets killed)
Jim Zorn (can see the "progress" in a 9-7 squeaker at home against the NFL doormat... And goes for a 4th and 2 instead of kicking a field goal to go up by 5 with 2 minutes left... And when the Defense holds the Rams after we give it up on downs because he doesn't believe in running the ball straight ahead, he takes knees... and he lets the RB attempt a pass on 3rd and Pass, which means the DBs aren't giving up coverage as they MIGHT on a Run down... He's crazy. You get the picture.)

... is there a pattern forming here?

Posted by: Thinker_ | September 21, 2009 1:30 AM | Report abuse

Aybody got Joe Gibbs number so I can ask him how Zorn got a hold of his play calling sheet? Was it me or did this game remind me of Gibbs 2 seasons ago just trying not to lose the lead? How do u take a knee with 1:27 to go from the 9 yard line? Zorn has until our bye week to fix this offense or we will see Danny boy pull the plug mid season no matter what our record is.

This happens every season. Each injury to the first string is more costly than it should be because the team has no depth. 10% of the players are using 90% of the cap money. This leaves no room for quality backups. Buying a team through free agency vs. building a team through the draft.

Posted by: RalphZero | September 21, 2009 12:57 PM | Report abuse

Why is Chad Rhinehart on this team? Is he Vinny's nephew? Why not tell the truth? The Redskins wasted all but one draft choice last year. How in the world is he not dressed? He was a third round draft choice. The other three second round draft choices are being nurse maided and we hope and pray they get to play. What kind of team is this? Randy Thomas is done. He gets hurt every year. Wait a week and we will lose another dinosaur from the offensive line.

Posted by: HelloNewman1 | September 21, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

God Bless him...Dude has been a warrior for this team much like Jansen was.

As for depth, remember Vinny stating that he took 'Sleepy' instead of a lineman or trading the pick because there were no decent linemen in the draft? Now you got a high pick TE that barely plays when you could have had a lineman or two had you traded that pick. Now we gotta get waiverwire rejects.

See what happens when 2 fantasy football 'genuises' own/run a team?

Bad play calling and poor game planning in the red zone. Once this Team gets close to the end zone a form of paralysis sets in. Rarely does this inept offense throw INTO the end zone!! The gimmick plays are so desperate and predictable in their (lack of) execution that opposing defenses are completely ready to stop them cold.
Zorn is a poor play caller, period. No amount of time will cure this problem as his entire offensive phylosophy has been on display for 18 games without results and I see nothing changing going forward.
I watch scoring Teams like the Saints, Patriot's, Charger's, Giants etc. and even the RAVENS that are incredibly aggressive in going after TOUCHDOWNS, not field goals as we do game in, game out.
The Redskons on Offense are surly the most predictable, boring, uninspired and poorly prepared in the NFL.
I for one will not regret the loss of Zorn either during or after this season. The defense will get them to 8 and 8 and we will continue watching paint dry and grass grow every week as it stands now.
Shanahan or Cowher, please help! Rescue this Team from it's Owner, win with some imagination and banish Snyder to his BOX as the spectator he must become!

They put in the wrong Montgomery. It should have been Anthony. Seriously they should draw on their abundant defensive lineman, give them a look. Golston is looking strong and everyone is clamering for Hansey to stay in. Monty may not see much time on D.

This is awful though. With Thomas out the right side of the line is totaly unreliable. I counted 7 sacks on Heyer, had every time he was beat equated to a sack. Another play Campbell began a scramble early being weary of Heyer's side. Even Samuels looked off, getting beat or pushed back a couple 2 or 3 times.
