Redskins' Plane in Colorado, but Not for Shanahan

There was word out of Colorado on Monday that a Redskins corporate jet had landed at a small airport near the Broncos' practice facility, which, it just so happens, is not far from the home of former Denver coach Mike Shanahan.

Naturally this led to all kinds of speculation, given the focus this week on the tenure of Redskins Coach Jim Zorn following the team's 1-2 start that included Sunday's loss to the Detroit Lions.

As it turns out, the plane was indeed in Colorado but, according to Redskins spokesman Zack Bolno, it was not being used for Redskins business -- and had nothing to do with Shanahan.

Several companies use the plane for business purposes, Bolno said, which is why it was in Colorado on Sunday. "It wasn't there for the Redskins," he said.

That's about all we know at this point. But with the heat increasing on Zorn and the Redskins, there figure to be a lot of rumors and reports in the weeks ahead.

And b/c they deny, what they mean is Shanahan has only verbally committed to Snyder. You know, we all talk about how money affects FAs and their desire to play. What about coaches? Assume Snyder pulls out all the stops and $$ to sign Cowher or Shanahan or Gruden, but with the Snyder stipulations still intact. Would they really care to coach 100% or would they try it 1 yr or so and then hightail it out with a major payday.

Posted by: pgugino | September 29, 2009 2:47 PM | Report abuse

No coach can help this team right now. The players themselves need to man up and right this ship. IMO, LFB is the only player who appears to be playing with any heart.

Another thrill an hour in FF for the Peeps league. And its wide open as there are ZERO unbeaten teams left and only the Steers are winless. Its a 7-way tie for the top spot!!! Ironically, two of this week's winners had a Redskin as their leading scorer, Campbell for Nate and Moss for Future.

My Futaleufu team led the league in FF points this week, defeating Skulls, 127-89. The Futa used a balanced attack, with everyone scoring at least 9 points enabling my team to overcome a huge day from Skull's Maurice Jones-Drew.

The Fins were dropped for their 1st loss by Nate, 81-75. Fins got 31 from Peyton, but it wasn't enough. The nail-biter went down to the end, but when DeAngelo Williams posted just 7 points on Monday night, Nate joined Fins as part of that 7-way tie for 1st, with records of 2-1.

The aformentioned winless Steers fell to the Shaft 99-61. Shaft had 6 slots in double digits led by the jints defense. Meanwhile, the Steers' dynamic ATL connection of Michael Turner, Roddy White and Matt Ryan were busted ... just 18 points total for the 3 studs. Still, Steer's problems aren't all of his own making -- he leads the league in points scored against him.

The Alex's Zombie Hord moved to 2-1 with a 74-49 win over the Jackalopes. The Hord rode desean jax's 22, but it was really a meltdown from the Jackalopes that made this contest. Portis, Jamal Lewis, Housh and T.O. combined for 5 points. I'd say that combo didn't provide the Jackalopes jack ... but that's be too obvious. Instead, lets call the sluggish studs as sucky as a Seattle Seahawk jersey.

In a close contest, the Buffaloes overcame 4-12, 90-83. Trailing by 23 going into the Monday night game, the Buffs got 30 points from their cowboy crap to pull out the win.

Also giving up the ghost of perfection was Noone from Tampa. The Future Winners said the Future is now with their 115-64 victory. 26 points from Santana Moss and 25 from Pierre Thomas led 6 double digit scorers for Future. Noone's beating got a bit uglier, as Frank Gore not only got bagel'd but is also out for a few weeks with an injury.

It couldn't have been more exciting in the Hamsters FF league unless you're a hamster. We've got 2 teams at the top. Suzanne's Trippin Billies and Sween's Ham Stweengs are the only remaining unbeaten's, at 3-0.

The Billies clobbered Butz 110-46, led by the week's top scorer, MJD's 37. Matt Schaub kicked in 21 in the blowout.

Meanwhile Stweengs kept pace at the top with a mauling over psps's Alpa Chino squad, 126-70. This rip job was courtesy of Stweengs 7 players in double digits, led by Pierre Thomas, Jason Campell and tashard choice. Hard to believe, but alpa falls to 0-3, despite a QB named Drew Brees.

Show me some Skin!! Its not out of place here as Ahmad's RealSkins held off the previously unbeaten Zornskins, 80-74. A pair of unexpected guys came up with big games for the Realskins, Derrick Mason and brent celek combined for 38. Still, it came down to Monday night, when romo's modest effort vs Carolina proved too little for Zorn -- not the only time a Zorn coulda used another 6 this past weekend. As they say in the Israeli military, "serves you right' for starting a cowboy QB.

Another unbeaten fell when etrod's E Funk beat cL's F bombers 118-96. The Sunday night game was pivotal, as Funk got 45 points from Manning and Clark. Of note, Peyton and Santana Moss both came over in a trade with yours truly prior to the start of the year. The duo combined for 60 points for Funk to lead him to his 1st W.

The KoolAid kids remained winless at Dealer's hands, 83-52. Dealer's jints defense got 22, while Koolaid got dealt mostly junk. Only Tom Brady made it into double digits for the Kids.

Finally, my Salmon crew knocked the Coproliths from the unbeatens, 75-59. My Packer connection of Rodgers, Driver and Jennings provided 52 points in a game filled where each team had only 3 guys get double digits.

Mistamoe is on the beat:

Keep Zorn.

Reduce his duties.

(Collect Kelvin Gilbride or Jason Garrett's cell phone numbers on the downlow)

Re-sign Campbell to a low rent deal with some guaranteed money to shut him up while he keeps the place warm for Sam Bradford or Jake Locker.

Fire Blache at the bye to shake up the defense.

Let Jerry Gray take over.

If CP is done, admit it, and ask yourself if CJ Spiller would look bettet then him in a number 26 jersey.

Of course, adding Spiller means you're stuck with Campbell at quarterback, so nix the Spiller chatta.

Make a short list of the best availiable free agent offensive linemen and scout them.

Ask yourself if Fred Smoot, Casey Rabach, Rock Cartwright, Ladell Betts, Cornelius Griffin, Renaldo Wynn, Philip Daniels, Andre Carter, London Fletcher, and Randy Thomas have futures with the team, answer, "No," and wave them goodbye.

Good-bye: (INSERT wave.)

But no, I know you don't have the balls to even think about doing that, I would say you're not that stupid, but it's obvious that you feel very strongly in your discontent over Obama. If it was really troubling you, you'd say f it and bull a Booth, but like I said, you don't have the balls.

No way Shanahan would take on this team in the middle of the season.

Also, if there were any sanity in Ashburn, Snyder wouldn't hire Shanahan directly, unless it was to make him the GM.

The ONLY way this team will ever win is if Snyder follows these steps:

1. Fire Vinny
2. Hire a GM and stay the heck out of his way
3. Let the GM hire the coach, pick the players, rebuild the scouting department, etc.
4. Let that new coach hire his own staff

But it's all predicated on Step 1, and I'm not sure that Snyder can ever bring himself to fire his Fantasy Football cohort.

When asked for comment about redskins-one being in Denver, Zorn stayed medium then he put on his headset and called a pass over the middle with time running out, followed by a run to the left. Then he repeated that call to run to the left a few more times. Later he couldn't get in his office becuase there was some guy named Mike in it.

Someone asked why hiring Shanahan would be a bonehead move...a few reasons:

1. His teams haven't been very good after Elway retired.

2. He would want full control of all football operations, and many of his personnel decisions (especially defensively) were very questionable in Denver.

3. Based on the first two points, it would set the franchise back another 3 years once he was gone.

If we end up firing Zorn, go the proven route and hire a GM, a young bright coordinator (akin to Tomlin, Harbaugh, Rex Ryan, etc.) as head coach and build this team the right way...

Posted by: mattylight | September 29, 2009 3:10 PM | Report abuse

little early to hire a new coach, but the desperate feeling is understood. After years of being kicked around and being medium (average)i don't want to be told that the coach is preaching being medium, i think that is a slap in the face. I know he wants his players to be under control, but not all players should be that way... for example the o-line, the running back, the te, the full back, the d-line, the Linebackers, and on run plays the dbs (wr's too) so that means the only player that alwyas needs to be medium is.... the qb (the kickers too but 130 lbs of rage never hurt anybody)

I haven't weighed in on this since the horrificly embarrasing lose to the Lions but I feel sufficiently distant from it now to be somewhat subjective.

This team plays like a bunch of dying fish. Having said that, a new coach sets us back again. I don't know what else to say. Zorn has too many responsibilities for someone that hasn't done 2 of the 3 jobs he has right now. He needs help.

The players look tired. I don't mean physically tires I mean tired of being alive. Most nteams have players that are highly psyched up and animated throughout the entire game. A guy makes a good play (or even one he's supposed to make) and he's jumping around like an epileptic in a room full of strobe lights. I don't see that on this team. There's no fire, no energy, and no heart.

This sh!t starts at the top...

I really don't think Shanahan is considering the skins. Our offensive personnel doesn't match up to what he does. None of our O-linemen and and only one of RB's (Aldridge) fit his running scheme. He doesn't use ball-control type TE's. He might be able to use some of our wr's. He'd want a more decisive QB than Campbell. So if Shanny came to D.C. he'd have to rebuild the entire O-line, bring in 2-3 RB's, find an athletic TE who can stretch the field, probably bring in 2-3 new wr's, and develope a QB. He'd probably get faster results with the personnel they've assembled in Dallas.

And should be taking heat for some of his ideas ... dontcha know.

Forget that stuff he's been drinkin Port 1 o4 2 quart:

1. Get an OL like the Ravens had. They lost their starting center last year AND actually IMPROVED!? Their young starting QB gets to work in a stable environment with a pretty damned good offensive line featuring 2 first round picks on it. The Ravens!!? The Redskins, HOGS remember?

2. The defense has plenty of guys on the line and at linebacker. They actually released some pretty good guys. Focus on cornerback and safety again just like Mssr. Williams did. Ask yourself: is he doing well in his new digs in Naw Leans? Yes. Do what he would do not what silly Snidley and fans think. doh.

3. Come up with a reasonably stable offensive system like Indianapolis has? Why do you think Peyton Manning is a franchise QB. Yeah he has talent but he also has a stable system he has been working in for a good while. Don't worry about who the damned QB is. If your line is good and your system is good, it doesn't matter if the QB is Joey T, Jay Schroeder (named the worst of the worst by Jimmy Johnson), Mark Rypien; imagine Jason Campbell, these underachieving recievers with the Hogs. Doh.

Do some investigating about the plane. Why was it there? Who was using it? The story leads to nowhere...no story. Then make the decision not to write about it because nothing is there. We never know about it AND there is no place to lob cheap shots about Shannahan as a replacement. But instead we have a reporter who wants to make up news by reporting about the plane and SPECULATING as to why it is in Colorado. That is so tactless. I wish you were above this crap.
If Zorn is a nice guy and you like the players and coaches then stick to reporting the real news and drop all this circus side show nonsense.
I can just hear your first question to Zorn at his next news conference. "Coach Zorn, would you care to comment on why the Redskin plane was dispatched to Colorado, home of Mike Shannahan? Do you think you are being replaced by the former Bronco coach?"

I think because it was reported by other sources before this that the plane was in Colo. the "Insider" felt that it should at least attempt to quell a possible rumor and thus reinforce it's standing as the "Insider".

Sweed, Mendenhall on notice in Pittsburgh
Posted by Tom Curran on September 29, 2009 3:28 PM ET

The two players taken at the top of the Steelers 2008 draft are catching a significant amount of heat from head coach Mike Tomlin.

On Sunday, former first-round running back Rashard Mendenhall didn't take an offensive snap. Mendenhall, Tomlin explained, "wasn't on the details" in the days leading up to the game.

Limas Sweed, a second-rounder last year, did take an offensive snap. And allowed a touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger to squirt out of his grasp when he hit the ground in the end zone.

According to Scott Brown in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, Tomlin was asked today if Sweed could lose his spot to Shaun McDonald, who's been inactive the first three games. "Absolutely," was Tomlin's reply.

Not a lot of gray area there.

As for Mendenhall, Tomlin cuffed down the notion that he's in the "doghouse."

"A doghouse is something you have when you let things stew," said Tomlin. "I tend to take action and I'm done with it."

The third player the Steelers took in that 2008 draft, linebacker Bruce Davis, has already been released. In other words, it's not looking like a bumper crop of players. To put it mildly.

With you there man. I am sick of all the nice talk. I want to see the guy rip some players a new one. I want him to call out Clinton Portis for lazing it out of practice because of boo-boo's. I want him to rip Haynesworth for lying on the turf like a beached whale because he had a little butt muscle pull (you know the real reason was the guy was exhausted).

Everybody says Zorn is a nice guy. He's like that 300 pound blind date your friend's wife sets you up with: "she's real nice". Yeah, nice and fat. Maybe she should go lie on the ground with Albert Haynesworth.

I heard that Dan Synder's helicopter just landed at UMD and Synder was spotted walking from his chopper to Ralph Friedgen's office with 100 bags of Johnny Rockets food.

My guess is that Danny is using food to get The Fridge to take over the 'Skins. Of course the 2 won't be able to fly back to Redskins park in said chopper because of weight restrictions.

Pffft. Whatever. All this speculation, and Snyder hasn't actually fired a coach since 2001. Oh wait! His plane is landing in Los Angeles! Maybe he's hiring Chef Gordon Ramsey to come in and shake things up! HE won't put up with this crap!

I'd be very surprised if they made any moves at this point - a midseason overall haul is a surrender of the year, and that IMO would be a mistake after 3 games.

Reports: A Redskins plane has landed near Shanahan's home.

Zack Bolno: "What's a plane??"

I heard this story last night too and its all bullcrap. There was definitely a representative from the Redskins doing an interview with Shanahan. The Skins can deny it all they want but its way to convenient for a Redskins plane to be spotted in Colorado a couple days after the Skins just had the worst loss of their entire history. It doesn't matter though, no one wants the Skins coaching job with danny boy and vinny breathing down your neck waiting to blame you for every loss.

Huh Clinton Portis became a star under Shanahan's scheme in Denver. And getting a new QB.. I hope so. Many think that was part of the reason the Skins tried to get Cutler to entice Shanahan.

Posted by: zaratealfredo | September 29, 2009 4:49 PM | Report abuse

here is what Snyder refuses to understand that he is already involved as a owner which means all he had to do is hire the right personnel and let them do their jobs and it apprears to me that snyder fails to undestand that you can't always have a winning season year in year out unless you are a team such as the colts or the steelers or the pats but to built a team like that you have to built it carefully and that takes time and it seams that he doesn't have the patience for the skins to become dominant again.

Posted by: rmnkevorkian | September 29, 2009 4:52 PM | Report abuse

Until Snyder comes to grips that he can't run a football team and his Fantasy Football cohort Vinny Cerrato is a joke as a GM, this team is doomed to fail. It won't matter if he hires Shanahan, Cowher, Holmgren, etc., unless he gets a real GM to run the football operations and stays out of the way. Snyder has alienated the entire Redskins fan base and only the hiring of Gibbs v 2.0 has staved off the wolves for this long. Zorn was hired because no one else wanted to work for Snyder or Cerrato.

Is it a coincidence that Jim Schwartz and Steve Spagnulo waited an extra year to take over teams like the Lions and Rams rather than to coach the Redskins under Snyder? Ask yourself that. If there is worse NFL head coaching job than the Redskins, it could only be working for Al Davis in Oakland.

Posted by: wizfan89 | September 29, 2009 5:12 PM | Report abuse

Sovine, it wasn't Shanahan who worked Portis into his scheme. It was Tony Kubiak, then the OC at Denver.

Anyone who thinks Shanahan is a good idea needs to remember the Broncos started sliding the day Elway left. It was the most underperforming team in the league during what was left of Shanny's tenure. The guy is an atrocious coach.

Posted by: messykat | September 29, 2009 6:02 PM | Report abuse

Well, if they said the plane wasn't there for Shanahan, then, it wasn't there for Shanahan, right?

I mean, WHAT exactly are you suggesting?

You don't think the owner would...

No, you don't actually think...

No, I'm sure there's just some OTHER unnamed business going on in Denver. You know, Denver is a thriving Metropolis, you know. Lot's of business dealings there, so...

I'm sure that's all it was.

Also, STOP WITH THE OLD JOE GIBBS POSTS. BUGES IS A BUM!!!

None of them walking thru the door. Buges is old, washed up, and the game has passed him bye bye.

Redskin fans...stop living 20 years ago.

This team is average, its personnel is average, its owner is average....everything about them is average.

The only good thing I read was when London Fletcher called em all out. He was right on!

The reason why no national news media follows them is simple...its not out of hatred...its not out of jealousy...its not out of boredom.

The team stinks right now.....Its up to veteran leadership (if there is any more like London Fletcher) and the COACHES to correct this.

If they can...season is ok....if they cannot...oh well...

I will not be like most of these ignorant bloggers and say "lets blow it up" cause YOU are thinking exactly like SNYDER and WHAT HAS THAT GOT THE SKINS IN THE PAST 10 YEARS!!
