Scratches for Steelers-Redskins (Updated)

Anthony Alridge, Devin Clark and Mike Williams are out for the Redskins; Ben Roethlisberger and Chris Kemoeatu are out for the Steelers.

Malcolm Kelly will start for the Redskins. Charlie Batch will start at QB for the Steelers. Doug Legursky replaces Kemoeatu.

Frank Summers was a late scratch for Pittsburgh. Mewelde Moore also will not be playing for the Steelers.

The Redskins got their first points of 2009 on a 20-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham. It capped a 15-play, 62-yard drive that took 6 minutes, 47 seconds. Tenorio's highlight of the drive: Rock Cartwright's 15-yard gain on a fake punt.

Steinberg Joins Fashion Police

Because it's raining and it's preseason and it's Dan Steinberg's D.C. Sports Bog, there's a FedEx fashion report.

Mr. Snyder's not going to be selling much beer tonight. The few fans who show up won't want to drink watery beer. Wait, this is a Steelers home game again, right? Those guys will pound down the brewskis. Anyone who will drink Iron City won't complain about watery beer.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | August 22, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Oline looked great! still nothing really in terms of passing despite great protection, and zorn is a fag for calling for a FG.

Posted by: zjfr2 | August 22, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Not happy that Campbell missed an open Kelly early and overthrew Moss on third down. But the offense moved the ball well after the fake punt. I wish Zorn had gone for it on the fourth and two. That third down run disappointed me. Sellers missed a key block and Betts was dancing. I'd rather see Clinton try to power through guys. But hey, gotta like the movement and the fact that they scored points.

Posted by: CDon | August 22, 2009 7:54 PM | Report abuse

They faked the punt... someone spoke too soon

Posted by: Dorf | August 22, 2009 7:54 PM | Report abuse

should have gone for it, TD much better statement than FG

Posted by: noonefromtampa | August 22, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

typical JC red zone performance..
Interesting calls.. Zorn appear to now be accepting that inside the 20 in a compressed backfield (DBs and LBs together), JC will not find the open receiver..given his slow release... and thus no second progression..
Field goal from the 3 in an exhibition game??

bad call on DHall

Posted by: Dorf | August 22, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

DHall was a little too intense there. But I love it. It was a pretty crappy call, but whatever, it's preseason. I love seeing DHall fired up.

Posted by: rachel216 | August 22, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Haha, how weird was that??!! Did it touch the ground? It doesn't matter if that's a catch or not, the D looks great. That's just one of the things you can't control. Sometimes the ball just bounces weird.

Posted by: rachel216 | August 22, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

The Steelers can't get another immaculate reception, can they? I thought it hit the ground...

Posted by: CindyBoren | August 22, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | August 22, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

You're going to pin that on JC even though the Skins called run plays. C'mon.

Line is collapsing the pocket. Call against Hall was AWFUL. Good use of replay.

Posted by: CDon | August 22, 2009 8:06 PM | Report abuse

This D is gonna make it very difficult for teams to move the ball this year.

That call on Landry was AWFUL, too. These refs need to clean up their games. That was a block to the SIDE.

But you have to love that first drive.

Posted by: WEWard3 | August 22, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

I haven't been on the DUMP CAMPBELL bandwagon, but after his deep throws so far this game, last game and last season have shown no touch or accuracy on them, I'm becoming concerned.

Posted by: CDon | August 22, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Another AWFUL call. That's not intentional grounding on Batch. Theismann is right about this.

Posted by: CDon | August 22, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Rogers with terrible coverage on that third down. Notice how he circled his coverage. I'm concerned about him at CB.

Posted by: CDon | August 22, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

It might be a little wet still. I'm surprised they started the game with 3 passes.

Posted by: rachel216 | August 22, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

Defense doesn't look so good here.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | August 22, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

good point.. at issue was more that Zorn called running plays...and not passing plays..
In the red zone when its compressed with DBs and LBs together, WRs dont get the separation they can get outside the red zone. As such, the red zone can be a challenge for a slow release QB like JC.

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | August 22, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

CDon,

We've been concerned about his coverage since they drafted him.

Nothing new there.

Posted by: Dorf | August 22, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

This has shades of last year's defense. They're giving up big plays on third and long situations. They're going to have to be more conservative with their blitzes or find some DBs who are more aware in coverage.

Posted by: CDon | August 22, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

Charlie Batch is looking like an all-pro. And he isnt.. He's a cast off from numerous NFL clubs.. not good.

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | August 22, 2009 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | August 22, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

I agree with that. It is difficult to throw for close TDs with a slow-release QB.

And there's the TD, a direct result of giving up big third and long plays. And for all the pressure the D-line got, they didn't really create any sacks or turnover opportunities.

It's also why the Skins can't settle for FGs, like they had to do all last season.

Update
Ladell Betts has a back strain and will not return.

Posted by: CindyBoren | August 22, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Is it bad that another teams old backup looks so much better (even under significant pressure) than our 4 year starting franchise qb? oh wait, I know I know its the system or something right? we can't expect him to look good ever until he's in a system for 6 or 7 years right?

Posted by: zjfr2 | August 22, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

LOL... Why keep Campbell in for this series if it's Cartwright off RT, followed by Cartwright off LT.

Zorn coaches like it's a regular season game.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | August 22, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

weird, campbell on a 4 yard button hook on his first read misses an open davis throwing it towards the waiting defender......great pass....

Posted by: zjfr2 | August 22, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

I'm with you CDon, looking a lot like last year. They need to figure out a new blitz scheme to take advantage of the dline without putting holes in the coverage.

Posted by: Dorf | August 22, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

The pressure from the D-line is nice. But like that last play, they have to actually sack the QB. Two misses.

I'm disappointed in Campbell and in the play calling. I'd rather see Zorn call some real plays, not all these dinky runs against a tough front. Run (gasp!) more than one wide receiver deep.

Posted by: rachel216 | August 22, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

It pains me to watch a guy like Romo complete 14 of his first 17 passes and make the right decision with the football and then see Campbell miss two deep throws and one key third-down throw. The guy has to get better.

A little bit of trivia unrelated to the matter at hand, but may be of interest down the road. Talked to a couple of people who were at the Cowpatties game last night. Evidently Jerry Jones worked really hard to make sure the Jumbotron was high enough to not get pinged; the highest any punter arched the ball before it was installed was (I think he said) 80 feet, so Jones had it put 90 feet over the field. The Titans punter pinged it three times last night, twice in warmups (no accident, that); when it happened during the game, the officials were a little unsure what to do. There's some rock concert in October where the band specified the Jumbotron be 120 feet high to accomodate its stand; the guy I talked to who worked the game last night said that after that, it won't be lowered. Hopefully Hunter Smith can do what the hammer thrower did in the old 1984 Macintosh commercial. Another guy who went to the game said he'd never seen anything with the clarity of the thing, though; that up there in the nosebleed section, where he was, what was happening live on the field itself seemed like a small screen distraction compared to the monumental electronic spectacle. Like I said, a little bit of trivia. Go 'Skins--get well fast, big Mike.

Jason Campbel is not making a case to keep supporting him. His stats are garbage for preseason so far. This is supposed to be pitch and catch man. 1/7?? I am a Campbell supporter but, come one man. You gotta start playing better.
