Skins to Sign Woodson to Practice Squad

The Redskins have opted to try to sign a bigger quarterback, Kentucky's Andre Woodson, to their practice squad, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Woodson, 25, was a sixth-round draft pick by the New York Giants in 2008. Among his achievements at Kentucky, Woodson, at 6-4, broke the NCAA record of 271 passes (set by Trent Dilfer) without an interception in September 2007. He extended that streak to 325 attempts before it was broken. In the Music City Bowl, he broke the SEC record for passing touchdowns in a season; he eclipsed Danny Wuerffel's record of 39 by one.

Earlier, Chase Daniel, generously listed at 6 feet tall, was signed to the New Orleans Saints' practice squad. He fired off this tweet around 7:45: "It's true...things didn't work out with Skins...had a great time, but headed to New Orleans tonight and practice tomorrow morning!"

This leaves the Redskins with two open practice squad slots after they signed Lendy Holmes, J.D. Skolnitsky, Eddie Williams, Trent Shelton and Rob Jackson.

Two other players who were cut Saturday by the Redskins found spots with other teams: Cody Glenn in Indianapolis and Antonio Dixon in Philadelphia.

So who is this year's chump to celebrate making the team only to be out of job before Sunday when the FO finds someone better off the waiver wire?

Posted by: bangkokben | September 6, 2009 5:59 PM | Report abuse

Pretty good pickup... Haven't seen him play since college though. So we'll see how he develops...

Woodson is 6' 5", 230.

He should come right in from the get go and be able to run the offense!

Oh, nm. That was the QB they just let go. :P

Don't think so.

Woodson is the kind of guy you could use some NFL Europe time-- if they had that still.

It'll be interesting to see what JZ can do with Woodson. Physically Woodson has what teams look for in a starting QB. Coach him up JZ.

So the practice squad is currently:

S Lendy Holmes
DE Rob Jackson
WR Trent Shelton
DE J.D. Skolnitsky
RB Eddie Williams
QB Andre Woodson

So, speculation on the final two(?) slots?

I really liked Chase, but had to admit that sometimes he just looked lost back there in the pocket simply because of his limited vision. A few inches definitely makes a difference for a QB in the pocket, no double entendre intended.

I haven't heard here about this rumor that was on ESPN: Will they be releasing Brennan too? Injury settlement and a good luck handshake?

Or will he return?

Posted by: SteveMG | September 6, 2009 6:19 PM | Report abuse

Glen was picked up off waviers by the Colts.

Posted by: lifelongfan | September 6, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

BTW a shout out to the scouting department for the job they did this year. Having three players picked up by other teams shows that there were some good developemnt prospects in the camp. If the skins kept the better players on their active roster, the future is looking a little brighter for them.

Posted by: TWISI | September 6, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Sweet. 6'5" 230 beats 5'11" all day everyday.

Also: Kid set a consecutive passes thrown with no picks mark.

Ball security matters.

Good luck to Chase. Welcome aboard Woodson.

PS My guess is that Chase signed with NO AFTER Redskins chose to NOT give him an immediate offer. Redskins were looking to go elsewhere and were holding Chase in their hip pocket in case they could not get another guy.

Colt can't even practice this year with the team. Tha't not a good situation for a player who needs to work on his fundlementals. I think Colt will not be back with the skins.

I would love to see one of the speedbacks. I know it was just one play in preseason, but Dorsey reminded me of Joe Washington on that TD run against the Jags. Portis said Aldridge can turn corners other backs can't even reach. Isn't fumblitis one of those things you work on in a practice squad? I would have liked to have seen both of them get more chances at KR/PR and swing passes during the preseason. Maybe one of them could develop into a poor mans' Sproles. I liked that TE, Agnone. And I wonder about Cody Glenn. They obviously expected him to be a project, anyway, because he just switched positions, did he really show nothing in preseason to justify the practice squad?

Posted by: kenboy1 | September 6, 2009 6:34 PM | Report abuse

Woodson was signed to the practice squad. This means that nobody on the active roster looses their job... yet.

On the topic of replacing those aforementioned celebrating chumps...Any decent O-linemen available out there?

Posted by: kaasmaster | September 6, 2009 6:50 PM | Report abuse

I don't think teams have to have 8 players on the Practice Squad - instead it is "up to 8" - so they may not pick up any more players.

Posted by: Lisa_R | September 6, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

I am glad they gave Rob Jackson another year on the practice squad; he and Jarmon could be a great LE tandem for the next decade after Wynn and Phillips take up the rocking chair

Posted by: kenboy1 | September 6, 2009 6:55 PM | Report abuse

eloi, hagans, young, agnone would all be decent for former players..

one way or the other, we need a LB to develop

next year after moss and ARE move on, there will be room for a couple of shifty, slot backs.. also, someone needs to push yoder off the team next year

Posted by: shally | September 6, 2009 6:58 PM | Report abuse

its encouraging to see such solid discussions of practice team players prior to the season but i hope it translates to quality on the field by the actual team members. Beat the giants!

A week before we play the giants we sign one of their backup qbs... great idea. Lets see what we can learn from him. This kid's been there for 2 offseasons now, so he should know the offense. Hopefully we learn something and come out and play a little better game this year than we did last year... and lets hope Landry doesn't get embarrassed again.

Don't feel like DANIEL is any great loss. GLENN either. But I hated seeing DIXON gone. Thought he has a long future in the NFL. Glad JACKSON skinned through.

Posted by: glawrence007 | September 6, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

We have to make a big deal about SOMETHING! No real games have been played yet. Nothing actually important is going on, but we're all chomping at the bit with only one week left to go. So we have no choice but to make a big deal about the least important stuff.

Posted by: kaasmaster | September 6, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Clearly with this signing we disregard the 3rd QB spot. Chase Daniel was a Heisman canidate while at Mizzou, He played at a high level. Andre Woodson was terrible, you can make stats show what you want, and he had some good ones, but in the end what has he accomplished. He is another Jason Campbell, and will never be more than that. In the end we will be looking for another qb next year.

Posted by: TNskin | September 6, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

HOLMES has a future in the NFL. Not so GLENN, DANIEL, SHELTON, WILLIAMS or SKOLNITSKY IMO. No, DIXON is the one who got away. Otherwise, fine by me. DAMMED EAGLES.

Dominic Rhodes released yesterday can't remember by whom wonder if the Skins will have any interest, Jint's wideout's supposedly not a threat obviously it's the running attack and of course their defense. The question can the Skins go into NY and win this game?

pgugino:

Sorry I missed your post on an earlier article about KELLY. Here's my response.

glawrence007,
They haven't posted the depth chart yet, have they? And, if Yoder does beat out Davis, it's only cuz Yoder is a better blocker. Either way, Davis will get more playing time this year and he'll have playmaking opportunities. It's up to him on capitalizing.

Posted by: pgugino | September 6, 2009 12:52 PM | Report abuse

Couldn't agree more. It's up to DAVIS, but I'm seeing DAVIS as a two soon, and YODER at three necessitating another TE in the next draft to replace him. Maybe I didn't make myself clear. I'm saying DAVIS has the ability, and needs an alarm clock to go off in his head now - a sense of urgency if you will.

I believe that the skins defense has a good chance of shutting down the Giants. Our strength in recent years has been in stopping the run game, and I don't see that changing. The O-line hasn't had time to be beaten down yet (a definate worry for later in the season). If they can keep Campbel upright, I think we might have a chance. I think this will be an excellent opportunity to see what we really have for an offense this year. If they are successful, we may be in for a happy year. If not, it may be another long season.

Posted by: kaasmaster | September 6, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

BTW,
I was just trying to piece together Woodson's preseason stats. It looks like his completion percentage was below 50%, two interceptions and no touchdowns. This guy is a project and little more, but, as many posters have pointed out, the guy must know the Giants' playbook...

Makes sense to me. If Portis or Betts go down like last year they want someone to go in with that same style of running. Our line isn't going to be opening up any 2 lane highways. Our backs will be fighting thru a lane the size of an a$scrack most of the time so it will be alot of 4 yards and a cloud. Hey, I'll take 4 and 4 more all day long.

Wise up people, if anybody honestly thinks you are getting any valuable intel from a 3rd string QB for this sundays game with the Giants you are insane! I guess the Giants are a bunch of morons and won't make any adjustments to their offense. Only in DC are fans obsessed with who the 3rd string QB is going to be. At least this QB Woodson has the size you look for in a QB. Unless the QBs name is Brees, I'm not intersted in having any QB listed at 6ft tall or under in the case of Chase Daniel. To the person that mentioned that Chase Daniel was a Heisman candidate you really need to do some reading as to how irrelevant that is to a QBs pro potential.
There's a long list of Heisman QBs who never made it in the NFL.

Big Antonio Dixon will be back with us if not by mid season then by next off season when we will not resign either Monty or Golston or if Griff retires!! either way we will get back and his time spent with the iggles might help us in the long run

Dixon was signed by the Eagles. This is why coaches hide stuff in thier playbook until this week. The divisional teams will bring in "spies" after the cuts happen.
