Some clarity -- sort of -- on the Jerry Gray situation
Secondary coach Jerry Gray again declined to comment on reports he has interviewed for the Redskins' head coaching position that Jim Zorn still occupies, but Gray revealed he has spoken with Zorn about the situation and they are "on the same page," Gray said after practice today at Redskins Park.
"Jim and I have had a discussion and the thing that we've discussed is don't let this distract us about what we're doing," Gray said during his weekly media session to discuss the defense. "That's been one of our main deals.
"I know it came up last week, 'Oh, well, what's going on with the staff?' We're together. Trust me. We're going to be together. We've got two more weeks to be together. And then whatever happens, happens."
After Monday's 45-12 loss to the New York Giants, Gray declined to discuss whether he had met with team officials about the position that Zorn has held the last two seasons. Owner Daniel Snyder is expected to fire Zorn after the season and hire former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan as team president and coach, many in the organization believe.
Asked today whether he had interviewed for the head coaching job, Gray, who was a finalist for the University of Memphis position in November, initially said, "No." When pressed about the situation by a reporter, Gray did not deny interviewing.
He seemed to backtrack on his initial response, saying simply: "The conversation is between [Jim] and I. That's what we're going to do. Let's move on, go to the next level and get ready for Dallas."
Given the contradictory information, reporters sought further clarification following Gray's media availability, but the coach waved off reporters. So reporters asked the team's public relations staff members to clarify. They returned to say Gray didn't mean "no;" he meant "no comment."
Here's what the PR staff relayed to reporters: "Any conversation that I have is between me and Jim," according to a quote attributed to Gray. "We're on the same page."
