The Welcome Home Luncheon

I just got home after attending my first Redskins Welcome Home Luncheon, which was an interesting experience to say the least.

Maybe it's just me, but it's a tad unnerving to see grown men wearing dresses, wigs and artificial pig snouts seated at a table inside the Ritz-Carlton, Tyson's Corner. Then again, life is short. Be happy.

Lunch was simply outstanding. For starters, the Ritz's chefs put together a delicious fresh mozzarella and tomato salad with romaine lettuce. The main course was a filet mignon cooked just right (nothing worse than a tough filet), which was served with a potato pancake of some sort, a petit vegetable casserole and bound vegetable spears.

As for the program, Doc Walker handled emcee duties flawlessly (surprising for a Bruin). He struck a nice balance of waxing nostalgic about the good old days as he introduced Redskins alumni in attendance while also stirring up the big crowd (it didn't take much) with his observations about Washington's current players.

I'm a newcomer to the area, as many of you know, and despite being familiar with the Redskins' tradition of success and experiencing the fans' passion first-hand, watching the interaction between fans, coaches, retired players and active players in the room was fascinating. But as Doc talked about the team's storied history, it struck me how long it has been since the Redskins accomplished anything truly impressive.

Running back Clinton Portis (offense), middle linebacker London Fletcher (defense) and James Thrash (special teams) received the respective player-of-the-year awards for the 2008 season. And then it was Coach Jim Zorn's turn.

Anyone who has read Redskins Insider knows how much I respect Zorn for his straightforwardness and professionalism in dealing with the media. But ever since Zorn made his infamous "maroon and black" flub at his introductory news conference, I always get a little nervous for the guy when he speaks in these types of settings.

There were no such missteps today as Zorn addressed fans eager for good news, and he seemed to know his audience well. Early in his remarks, Zorn thanked owner Daniel Snyder for his support and praised him for his marketing acumen. Considering the buzz about Zorn's supposed lack of job security/Mike Shanahan's desire to coach again in 2010, it probably was a good move for Zorn to give Snyder the shout-out.

In keeping with Zorn's positive theme, he said Redskins fans would see "a commitment to excellence" from the team this season. The Oakland Raiders haven't had much use for the slogan lately; perhaps the Redskins could make better use of it. Of course, Al Davis might feel differently.

"We're trying to commit to be excellent on the football field," Zorn said, "and off the football field."

And, hey, shouldn't every team strive for that?

Specifically, Zorn has three big goals for the season: Win the NFC East, win the NFC championship and win the Super Bowl.

"Just to get there is not an important thing," Zorn said. "To win while you're there is the important thing. We can do that with this group."

The applause increased in intensity as Zorn announced each goal, reaching a crescendo with the Super Bowl victory talk. If I recall correctly, they haven't hoisted one of those Vince Lombardi Trophies around these parts since 1991, but if you're Zorn addressing a packed room of staunch Redskins supporters, why not dare to dream?

I didn't stick around for the announcement of door and raffle prizes because, well, I couldn't accept door and raffle prizes if I had won. In an effort for full disclosure, I also didn't pay the $175 individual ticket price listed on the team's Web site, but I attended as a working member of the media. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. Later.

Cannot wait to see an AH- RAK 1-2 punch, ouch!

Who needs offense anyways? We got the 4th ranked defense and added a bunch of monsters to it. Let's get pumped up dudes and dudettes? (that is of course in case there are any dudettes around here, in which case I would like to invite the 7-10 ranked ones to a Redskin discussion here in the good old Santa Monica, CA ;-)

The Redskins will have to cut five players by Sept. 1. Then they’ll travel to Jacksonville to play the Jaguars on Sept. 3 before lopping another 22 off the roster to set the final 53.

I've been looking at the depth chart.. Zorn has said he's not going to keep 4 RBs in the roster.. so either Dorsey or Cartwright will go. Robert Thomas was signed exclusively for special teams replacing Khary Campbell.. so it's hard to say who will be cut.. either Alfred Fincher or Chris Wilson (unlikely since Coach Blache's comments on him). I agree with your take on Will Montgomery making the roster, oh yeah. We'll see.

Deep down I know Dorsey and BMW will be cut but I just don't want to admit it. Robert Thomas and Eddie Williams will probably make instead of Dorsey and BMW. We really do need the depth at FB and LB. It is the correct call I just wish we could find a place for those two.

Technically the Lombardi trophy was hoisted in 1992, Jason, don't push it back farther than it was!

I don't know if the Redskins can get there this year, but they were 3-2 against the teams that were playing in the AFC/NFC Conference championships last year. If only we didn't have to play an AFC team to win another Lombardi trophy....

I think Chase will be on the roster, not Colt. And I think that the 'Skins will actually go with 51 players in camp now and will pick up two players cut by other teams -- a tackle and a corner. All bets off, though, until the next two games are played.

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | August 27, 2009 4:58 PM

Getting on a high horse about semantics, then being stubborn about it, and defending it like its the last popsicle in the box ... to the point of putting posting on the line ... that stuff is going to stick.

You only have 4 corners on there, I think that's a problem. I think Rob Jackson goes. And Cody Glenn has been getting good reviews.

I would love to retire Wynn...but I think he is "locker room" lock.

looking at your list, it occurs to me that most of the marginal guys I would want to let go are on the offensive side of the ball. That's because we have such limited depth there.

If I'm a GM on another team, I'd be looking very carefully at who the Skins cut on the defensive side of the ball. Because we will have to let go of some real talent.

"to the guy from south carolina: you have zero room to talk here: YOUR quarterback, jake delhomme, is one of the worst in the league. luckily, he has a great line, a super running attack and several very good receivers. guess what: he still averages less than 60% completion and gets a lot more picks than our guy.

MY quarterback is named Jason Campbell.

And I think I might take Delhomme over JC. At least Delhomme will throw the freaking ball down the field once in awhile.

I was done with the stupid dink and dunk passes when Brunell left.

Sween - Henson will replace LFB within the next 2 yrs.....(Next yr or the yr after)

Posted by: 4thFloor | August 27, 2009 5:09 PM | Report abuse

How about a commitment to running pass plays beyond the first down marker on 3rd down Zorn?

P.S. That loser that keeps posting crap on here day in and day out obviously has no life, no job, and no woman..correct that-he's probably never been with a woman.

Dont you think they can sneak one of the 7th rd LBs to practice squad. I do and thats how they keep a Wynn or Oline depth.

Think so? I'd put $20 on it that Vinny uses at the lowest a 2nd rounder on his replacement. Rocky Mac replaced Arrington/Holdman, Orakpo replaced MWash, that's how Vinny does it. Or he spends $30 million on a FA. One or the other.

I'm not at all certain Jarmon doesn't start the season on the practice squad. About Cody Glenn I've heard virtually nothing. I can't imagine both Alridge and Dorsey making the club, even before the injury problems. Maybe if Cartwright is more seriously hurt than we've heard...

Samson, what are you thinking? We just spent a third round pick on this guy. Put him on the practice squad and, bingo, 31 other teams in the league will claim him.

The problem is that you're on the wrong blog. That practice video isn't the Redskins. It's the Wizards.

Would someone from the Washington Post like me to show them how to block an IP address or range rather than a user-name so the troll can go back to its cave.

Best idea yet, I know there is a way to block the IP address, and the moron already has a new screen name.

4th, I say Blades replaces LFB. Agree to disagree.

psps, I say next year's first pick is RB (unless they somehow end up with two first round picks, in which case they might pick an offensive tackle first).

For starters, the Ritz's chefs put together a delicious fresh mozzarella and tomato salad with romaine lettuce.

Jason, this sounds like a garden variety salad you were served.

You don't have to be a chef to make this salad.

The place is nicely decorated. There is abundant ketchup bottle on every table. The service is prompt yet friendly. Skip the appetizer if you wanna get to the meat before it gets too cold. The double-double is certainly the overwhelming choice amongst the regulars here, but I suggest the "protein-style" cheeseburger which comes wrapped in a large lettuce instead of the bun. The beverage list is extensive, but most costumer go for the safety of Barq Root Beer. For dessert, the chef prepared a vanilla shake a la mode

What is pathetic is that the guy is reposting on the same blog - if you were really trying to generate traffic, you would do 1 post here, 1 on cowboys blog, 1 on espn, etc.

I will be on an airplane during the draft but hoping my luck holds up--
