This Week's Challenge: Stopping Jackson

The Redskins limited the New York Giants to 3.3-yard average on 31 rushes in Week 1. Power back Brandon Jacobs had only a 2.9-yard average on 16 rushes. Up next, the St. Louis Rams and big back Steven Jackson. In the Rams' 28-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Jackson had 67 yards and a 4.2-yard average.

If you're a Redskins fan, this is probably the guy who concerns you most. I know the Redskins did a super job against the Giants' top-notch running game - in large part because of the strong performance of Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth - but Jackson is a dynamic runner.

He has rushed for at least 1,000 yards the last four seasons. He accelerates through holes quickly and can run over or away from defenders. Defensive coordinator Greg Blache definitely is impressed.

"They have one of the best backs in the business," Blache said. "The guy at Minnesota [Adrian Peterson] is off the chart. I put Jackson just underneath him. He is big, strong and fast. He can go the distance every time he touches the football.

"If the hole is not there inside, he will bounce it outside. He can catch passes out of the backfield. I think the guy is a home run hitting type of back."

Haynesworth, who declined to speak with reporters this week, plans to let his performance do the talking. The Redskins need him to speak loudly again.

In honor of Coach Jim Zen:

----------

It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

It's a neighborly day in this beautywood,
A neighborly day for a beauty,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you,
I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So let's make the most of this beautiful day,
Since we're together, we might as well say,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?

Won't you please,
Won't you please,
Please won't you be my neighbor?

-----------

I *heart* Jim Zen.

In all seriousness, which ain't much these days:

What about Howie Long Jr. (Chris Long,) the RDE for the St. Louis Rams? Haven't heard much from him, but I think he had a modestly productive rookie campaign?

Does he present any challenges for the Redskins?

Redskins need to approach this game as if they are going to play Steelers or Patriots.

Play to score on every down, plan to stop them on every down. I know, that is what you are supposed to do anyway, but way too often our beloved Redskins are found sleeping at the wheels.

The Fierce Urgency of Now--is now! A loss or an ugly win can lead to some very nice people losing their jobs. It will also lead many fans to pull out few remaining hairs on their heads.

Coach Zorn, please assign someone to review the game "real-time" and make adjustments "during" the game if possible.

"Does he (Howie Long, jr.) present any challenges for the Redskins?"

Very good question.

If I'm the rams, I line him up against Samuels with the idea of making the veteran work.

But again: these are the rams, and Howie Long, jr., is just the son of an NFL Hall of Famer--for now.

We take the redskins 31-21, with one of the 'triplets' getting his first NFL touchdown: Marko Mitchell.

I live in LA too, and can confirm that when you wrote your post, it was a beautiful day in LA. But it will stink by three when it’s in the mid nineties and smoggy. And next week it’s supposed to be well over 100 in many parts of this godforsaken desert cesspool, and the predicted Santa Anna winds will heighten fire danger.

I feel so sorry for Jason Campbell. Poor fellow. Could not figure how to go deep on the Giants. Football is such a complicated game. Oh well, hope they are able to figure something out against the Rams. They did not last year.

LarryInClintonMD.

When did Campbell start designing the offense, game planning and calling plays? I love sarcasm, but aim it at the right guy— Head Coach and offensive "Genius" Jim Zorn

Steven Jackson is a big, strong back, who unlike Jacobs last week, is FAST. D.Hall, and L.Landry better wrap this guy up and not whiff and just throw their bodies in his general direction like they did Jacobs last week.

I'm sure Big Albert is going to come to play tommorow and will clog up the middle and help collapse the pocket on Bulger.Hopefully he can get his first sack as a Redskin. We need more than last weeks 1 sack. Maybe Orakpo can get his first NFL sack.(especially if he's allowed to play more of his natural DE position)

JZ needs to call plays for JC to throw the ball down the field,(I don't want to see 1 of those BS WR screens)and get Kelly, Thomas, and Mitchell involded along with Moss.

I hope most of the running plays don't go to the left like last week. Man, that sure makes our run game easy to defend.

When is the last time this team just dominated somebody and just mopped the field with their a##? Even when we were 6-2 last year, every win was close and an edge of the seat nail biter. It seems eons ago when we just beat the sh%t out of somebody and the game was over by the 3rd quarter. We fans deserve such a game from this team tommorow, beleive me, it is well overdue.

With a big decisive win tommorow are Redskins can put that type of comment to rest.

ASHBURN, Va. -- Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot has been downgraded to questionable for Washington's game against the St. Louis Rams.

Smoot first appeared on the injury report Friday as probable with a rib injury. The Redskins haven't said how the injury occurred.

Smoot is Washington's third cornerback, used primarily in nickel packages with starters DeAngelo Hall and Carlos Rogers.

If Smoot can't play on Sunday, second-year player Justin Tryon will likely see more playing time.

During the Cal/Minn game, Bob Griese was talking about the QB/WR relationship he had with Warfield. He said that because Warfield was always doubled, they would always run a route as if he doubled. So Warfield would run the route differently if he was high/lowed or rolled to. I'm not sure if the skins do this with Moss, but giving the team's difficulty with Moss being doubled I doubt it.
