Taylor's Knee Injury Called a Sprain

Defensive end Jason Taylor left the Redskins' game against Carolina in the second quarter after suffering what the team said is a sprained knee.

The injury initially looked more serious as Taylor's leg bent at an awkward angle when he ended up in a pile of players on DeAngelo Williams' 5-yard run. He screamed and writhed in pain for several minutes on the field, then limped off on his own.

"I was running to the ball and I saw him ... it looked like somebody was laying on his leg," Anthony Montgomery said. "I could see the pain in his face, so I just wanted to get the trainers out there as fast as possible. It gave me a scare."

After being examined on the sidelines, he left on a cart and the team announced that X-rays were negative. He will undergo an MRI Sunday.

"When he flipped over and they pulled down his sock that's a very bad sign," Coach Jim Zorn said. "It was a tough situation, but I think we're going to come out of it okay. Our initial evlauation is that I think we'll come out of this one okay."

In recent weeks, Taylor has battled a flare-up of plantar fasciitis, a condition that frequently bothers him. However it hasn't kept the Pro Bowler from starting in 130 consecutive regular-season games.

Dang, for lack of more intense words.

Umenyoura got carted off the field for the G-men as well

I hope Taylor was grooming Evans and the others. FFFFF. and First.

Carlos got beat on a route? Good to see nothing has changed. I hope he continues to give a good 10 yard cushion on 3rd & 2 plays...

Now this is more like the team I expected...can they MAYBE try a seven step drop..

...but Frost is averaging 51.8 yard/punt on 4 punts. He'll win his job back and become Sir Shank-a-lot in the regular season, getting back to his 32 yard/punt average.

Can't make much of comment here because I haven't been able to watch the game. But here are some obvious possibilities - no Marcus Washington no LL = equals no defense. Throw in an injured Taylor and they can now throw it too. Also, again can't watch but are those long runs 1st and 10 and 11 yards are those on nickle or with the base?

Posted by: mattymatty | August 23, 2008 9:06 PM | Report abuse

This is the best thing to happen to the Skins (well, not Taylor's injury).

Realize that if you don't give max effort on every play in every game, you can get blown out. The NFL is that competitive.

Blache is/should gonna rip into this D. You can't just quit. Lack of execution is bad. Lack of effort is UNFORGIVABLE.

It's good to see Zorn get a chance to respond
to this offensive effort. I've always thought the mark of a great head coach is how he responds to adversity. Zorn hasn't had any so far, but he's gonna have to figure out how to get things going in a hurry. Welcome to the party...

This team looks terrible. Even in the preseason, you should be able to make in-game adjustments. The two long runs and evidence that this team is not adapting, and that's troublesome going into the season. This game, more than the others, is telling. And it's a bad sign.

Please don't say it's only preseason, that's BS! Half of the players had been playing together for 3 to 5 years! At least keep the score close. This is embarrassing and the Skins should be ashamed of themselves for playing the way they are playing now. If you're gonna approach this game as 'oh, this is preseason' then you shouldn't be playing football. You're mentally should be, kick a$$ whenever you're on the field.

That said, our defense lines need to be upgraded then again most of us been saying this for years now. As for the Secondary, I just can't help but keep thinking about ST! When the pather runner back lost the ball and smith picked it up, there's no way in hell he would had gotten that ball is ST was there...sigh..

Posted by: DeMJ | August 23, 2008 9:12 PM | Report abuse

sickcuz - shutup. Our OL sucks today because it hasn't had a coach for the 3-4 most crucial days before a game. Our defense sucks because three of its four leaders and bada$$es either aren't playing or went down (JT). This does not neccessarilly indicate what a real game will look like. Especially the Quitting, that in the regular season will be reason to cut these players. In this crap-donkey of a game is almost understandable.

Those that are critical of criticism are nuts! The fact that it's preseason does not excuse this kind of play. Penalties, missed tackles, crappy special teams, mental mistakes are all painfully evident tonight. If you want to be nice and not be critical of a program/team/ownership/staff, I suggest you go watch a HS game. Everybody on that field from, coaches, trainers, and officials to players is fair game.

Posted by: 4skins | August 23, 2008 9:13 PM | Report abuse

That entire offensive putdrity? That's on the O-line.

No protection means Campbell can't make plays (he's not good enough or well versed in the West Coast offense to make plays when the protection breaks down)

No blocking consistently means no running room for Portis or Betts.

And no production means no rhythm. I thought Zorn should've gone to short drops and quick hitters in the 2nd quarter instead of trying to go deep, but maybe he was tryin to get a big play to prevent the safeties from creeping up to the box...

Posted by: hailbg | August 23, 2008 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Just finishing dumping the Koolaid down the drain.
I thought they were going to have the starters play the first half?
About the only thing good about this game is it is preseason.
The scary thing is that other then Frost I did not see a single postive effort on the entire team. What's that say when the punter is the game MVP.
Heck they barely get the ball to the 20 on kickoffs.

Ugh. I'm just listening to the webcast but this is getting ugly. I really hope Zorn has the cojones to rip into these guys.

And I'm about ready to say goodnight to JC. The Panther DEF is good, but hardly fear-inspiring.

I honestly think the starters should stay in til they get it right We don't have a game next week like most teams.

Posted by: Kelly | August 23, 2008 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Jason Taylor or no, the D still got completely destroyed. On offense, everybody looked lost--the O-Line was beaten in pass protection, . Hope and pray that Jansen recovers, or Heyer gets healthy (and better), because that's a serious concern. At least Pete Kendall looks alright... Don't even get me started on Campbell, he looked like he was lost at sea out there...

This is a sign of what will happen if important starters are lost to injury--or are injured during the season. Remember 2006? Let's also hope and pray that Doughty learns from this experience because he got TOOLED.

Then again, this could be a taste of things to come in the NFC South--Delhomme is healthy, Williams is poised to have a breakout season, Jonathan Stewart has ankle-breaking speed, and the defense is quality--the Panthers should go to the playoffs this year.

Anyone notice that Steve Smith seems really focused on playing better after breaking his teammate's nose? He was dominating...

Posted by: dcsween | August 23, 2008 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Wow. I'm not watching it but looking at the play-by-play I have to ask where is the defense?

Carolina drives: 11 yard run, 15 yard pass, 50 yard TD run. Then 18 yard pass, 11 yard run, 60 yard TD run. Then 18 yard pass, 34 yard TD pass.

10 and 15 yards on each play.

Sounds like on both lines of scrimmage the Skins are just getting leveled.

Panthers D. I can't not understand how it energizes a defense to sack the QB in the first (insert how many times in the first quarter? and for how many yards total?). I can't even feel sarcasm. Its double negative.

There are no words to completely express the fear I feel for the Skins' season at this moment. When you look back at those first three games, the Skins' really never did take complete control of either game. Just a lucky break here and there. Now to put this thing into some kind of perspective, the regulars won't be getting too much more playing time before the opener. There is a whole sh-t load of work to be done on both sides of the ball. For starters, my homeboy JC better get his act together; of course that OL didn't do him any favors tonight. The defense got their rear ends handed to them, but, I do believe they will get their act in order. They have to. Peace out and cheers fellow burgundy and golders.

All I can say was this game was being hyped up BIG time! Had the Skinz been on top, it would be like they were going to have a good team. However, they are getting embarrassed and neither side of the ball is doing anything. That shows us that the first two games are average teams, but up against a contender, they fold as usual. Changes are needed and it starts with releasing some of the old players to rebuild. My vote is to rid the team of Portis, Springs, Smoot, Thomas, Jansen, and a few others. It is time to rebuild because the same old same surfaces every year!

Giants lost one too:
Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora was carted off the field in the second quarter of the New York Giants’ annual preseason game against the New York Jets after his left knee “locked up” on Saturday night.

X-rays were negative but further examinations are planned Sunday, the team said.

The 26-year-old could not put any weight on his leg. He was helped off the field with his arms wrapped around the shoulders of two trainers.

Difference is they've got somebody behind him and he's 26. Skins don't have much behind Taylor and he's 34.

I really would like if McMullen is able to get to something like "most improved" by the end of the season. I wanna believe in McMullen.

Rogers' YAC feels like it should be low; was felt like a good sign. Moore turns out to be a very well made 4th round call. Theesman says it was Steve Jackon's find.

Where is Horton on the depth chart?

Also, Springs has been hitting well. He's not getting thrown at.

The honeymoon with our new coach is over. OK, DC sports median, let er rip. My only hope is that the team was affected by the sad death of Joe Bugel's daughter. All the Skins fans that came to root for the burgundy and gold in Carolina will be very dissappoint. There is much to fear.

Rather than drafting two receivers (both of which are behind James Thrash), we should have been shoring up the secondary and offense/defensive lines. The team is also reacting to Zorn's public derision of players before the media. The internal workings of the team under Joe Gibbs was very hush-hush. And although the media sharply criticized Joe for his "its all of us together" attitude, there is something to be said about keeping thing in-house. Zorn, still a naive head coach, with no experience as the head guy (or even second in-command) is only too accomodating to the media to constantly spill his guts about the players. He is much too cozy with the media.

It is perfectly clear that the Danny wanted somebody fluffy and a "real nice guy", a charmer, if you will. The real brains behind the Skin' limited success over the last four years was Gregg Williams. His defenses kept this team afloat despite the inane offesnses with which he had to contend. He deserved his shot here in DC.

In conclusion:
1. DC should never draft any receivers ever.
2. Despite all this, Zorn should still get his shot.

Posted by: illwill | August 23, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

I hope Zorn replaces JC more quickly than Gibbs did. It took an injury for Gibbs to see that JC sucks. I hope it doesn't take an injury during the regular season for Zorn to see that and yank him.

I'm concerned with the effort and the inability to adjust in-game tonight. I saw now effort, and I saw no adjustment, particularly from the defense. Campbell still holds on to the ball way too long, but the offensive line was atrocious, too. Still, Campbell does too much pumping and not enough throwing. He needs to learn to dump it when his line is collapsing on him. He doesn't have time to hit a home run every time he drops back.

If nothing else, this game will serve as a wake-up call to Zorn, his staff, the players, and The Danny.

"Rogers, Smoot and Springs--you won't find a better group of DBs in the NFL." Actually, you would find several in places such as Denver, Dallas, Philadelphia, Oakland, Chicago, Carolina, and a few other teams

"That was great coverage" when Reed Doughty was "covering" the tight end that caught the 3rd TD that bum allowed

What a clown

The O-line is in terrible shape, and JC holds on too long to cover up the line's problems. I drove up to DC today for work, and listened to a radio show where Jansen was saying they actually game planned for this game. Unless the line figures out how to slow down a rush, we're in for a long season. JC isn't the answer, but we don't have anyone else ready. Colt is fun to watch, but is way too green.

No direct negativity from me, unless its completely hilarious, but hilarity is not currently in the neighborhood.

As an athlete, particularly a professional one, having a great game must feel great. I think Derrick Frost should be feeling great, but sharing in the great feeling of a great night of punting ... should not be required of any NFL fan. I want to be positive.

Yes, but not sufficient enough to require surgery (hopefully).

If it's a complete tear, they have to go in. That's not a sprain.

If it's partial (sprain), he can rehab it.

Sprain usually refers to muscle sprains, right? I thought that there weren't that many muscles at the knee. But he was hit from behind, not the side or front, so it didn't seems like the kind of hit guys get when its an ACL or MCL. I was anon about the PCL idea.

Knee Sprain

Definition: A knee sprain means that you have injured one of the ligaments around the knee joint. Saying you have a "knee sprain" is not a terribly useful diagnosis for two reasons:

First: it does not tell you which ligament is injured. This is important because different ligaments are treated very differently. For example, ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries often need surgical reconstruction. On the other hand MCL (medial collateral ligament) injuries seldom require surgery.

Second: it does not tell you how badly the ligament is injured. The reason this is important is that minor injuries usually require minor treatment. More severe injuries may require more substantial treatment, rehabilitation, and possibly surgery.

watching the after game show-game planned, and this is the result?

Jansen allowed JC to get sacked again, and it probably should have been a safety.

Jansen is not good, JC hesitates too much. If the O-line was stronger, he could get away with that, he doesn't have that luxury! Samuels looked like a boy when Peppers pushed him into JC. WTF?

Preseason typically means little, but this game, at least the first half has always been more typical of a regular season game.

Like I posted for a few weeks now during "Zornamania" That the defense had not stopped anyone yet and was worried.....I now...after over 400 yards of offense plus giving up 47 points.....I have tied the noose and it's waiting in the garage....

Gonna be a very long season...I predict Zorn one and done.

WUSA had their camera on Taylor as he got hurt and was obviously screaming in pain. Does anybody have any factual knowledge as to whether the pain level is comparable with "just" a sprain and not an ACL tear?

i agree on bracing for bad newz on JT...butt he has been injury free which means he 1. plays through pain, 2. is a fast healer and 3. maybe he just isnt used to getting hurt so screamed and over reacted...

yeah i am grasping those straws...

Leevi, I couldn't see any coaching action (or inaction) that would justify any grief against the decision to hire Jimzorn as head coach. The players have to play the game.

and NO I am not one of those sold on "Zornamania" I think it's all hype to this point ...I have seen no indication that this team is better than 8 & 8 after tonight...in the preseason game starters are suppose to show excution...getting beat down like that....well let's just say is a VERY bad sign

After giving it a rest, I say that neither Erasmus James or Rob Jackson are or should be cut on Tuesday.

I think its fair to say, regardless of their play, that neither Devine or Goode are not necessary and will survive the waiver wire for a fair bit of time if the Skins have any reason for doubt.

Only three more guys necessary for Tuesday. Hopefully, that doesn't become a lower number because of an involuntary IR listing.

"Kelli Johnson Is Hot" - sorry but YOU are wrong - Kelli had on the blue shirt BEFORE the game (on the pregame show) - she changed into the Redskin shirt during the game - and then back into her own shirt afterwards. No biggie...she does this every week.

I don't know, leevi. Why don't you ask Adam Schefter himself. The report is linked to PFT.com. Might have something to do with having Dr. Andrews on the sidelines as team surgeon.

TAYLOR SPRAINS KNEE
Posted by Mike Florio on August 23, 2008, 11:06 p.m.

Redskins defensive end Jason Taylor went down with a knee injury on Saturday night against the Panthers.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Taylor suffered no ligament damage. He was examined by Dr. James Andrews, who happened to be at the game.

Taylor reportedly screamed in pain after getting caught in a pile up. He walked off the field on his own, but he put little pressure on his right leg.

Lisa,

I think the whole thing is scary. I think "Zornamania" will end real quick....I also think Blache will not work out quite the way it's hoped....I have seen nothing from the defense all preseason...a play here and there but I was worried weeks ago...Now I'm just disgusted.

Preseason or not.....no team at anytime...should ever lose 47 to 3 especially the 3rd preseaon game when the starters are suppose to show execution...this game was the final tune up...

Better get ready for a VERY long year....

"Zornamania" One and done!

T, Zorn was asked about playing the starters longer in the next game and he said he said he might do so (he did not commit but indicated he would think about it). Mike Sellers was asked if he wants to play in the next game considering how HORRID (my words) the team looked tonight and Mike replied he would like to play.

Leevi, I've never seen you so negative! Seems like you were 100% convinced the Skins were so much better off without Gibbs and Williams, last time we had a discussion! Still believe that, or are you having second thoughts?

Posted by: Alan | August 24, 2008 12:51 AM | Report abuse

Man, am I glad that I couldn't watch this game.

My main thought going into this one was that I'd use it as a barometer for how we're doing, after the unspectacular outing versus the Jets.

Ow.

At this point, the only thing that would make me feel a little better would be to hear all of the following:

1. That Zorn absolutely ripped the team a new one after the game.

2. That the captains called a mandatory team meeting for Sunday. No day off.

3. That Zorn and the rest of the coaches ride the team hard all week in practice.

Good golly.

Posted by: Alan | August 24, 2008 12:51 AM

Alan,

I never thought we were better off without Gibbs & and Willaims as it were. Although I have not really been a huge Williams fan through out. i thought he was way over rated. The talk was always what a great Cord. he was. What I saw for 4 years was a D that caved leads consistantly or always let teams march right down the file down the filed when it counted.

I was very disappointed about gibbs having to step down because of his grandson's illness. When i heard of the news Feb 07 I figured it would be his last season.

Now what you remember me discussing was i didn't want Willaims as head coach. For many reasons we don't really need to rehash.

Now as far as this team ...I'm not sold on "Zornamania" I have been worried about the D for a month. Everyone was so focused on Zorn, the New offense and new players. All i knew was that it was preseason and Spurrier hold the preseason scoring record. Enough said there.

I had noticed the D was not really stopping anyone. this includes the starters. After last week I was a bit worried....after tonight.....i'm more than worried....In the 3rd preseason game your starters should be executing. We are definitely not seeing that!

So I'm not being ngative just stating the facts....

Man it sure would have been nice to see what this team, with the bonding it had last season....under Gibbs just one more year......

HAIL!

I would like to nominate Anonymous at 9:04pm for the 'coin a new word/blog catchphrase/nouveau sniglet contest' Cindy challenged us with the other day...

Not sure if this was a Yogi Berra thing or an honest typo or whatever, but the term missery seems perfectly apt for the painful condition of having to watch a defensive player being taken advantage of (like, say, Reed Doughty when he's not at his, ah, best) or an entire D backfield being victimized.

Missery.

folks, this team over achieved last year and all during the gibbs years. and we was fools to think otherwise. and question gibbs as a coach. 0 and 16!!! jc can't play in the nfl. end of story.

nate, cL, jm220, greg...where are you guys tonite? defend your boy tonite.

and please rember coach joe is in the HOF for something. coaching. not finding talent. and he knows who to put on the field. jc, JUST LIKE desmond howard wasn't who he thought he was. so in short JC=desmond howard of gibbs 2.0.

and now the positives:

1. Karim moore, that dude could be a gem. he made doughty look like he was riding the slow bus.

2. the D looked fabulous. c'mon they shut out the panthers for 3 straight series. good enuff for me in the pre-season.

c. Portis!!!! wow! he's got new life. haven't seen him that quick in years.

Posted by: dealer | August 24, 2008 2:25 AM | Report abuse

dealer, hard to defend someone for something that I didn't see, isn't it?

Sounds like there wasn't much in the way of pass protection tonight, was there? Is that Jason Campbell's fault? That guy you love and adore and hold up as the be-all, end-all, Tom Brady, plays behind a line that simply does not have nights like this, even in the preseason. Big part of his success, as I think even he would admit.

Sounded like everything sucked tonight for the Skins, including J Campbell. But again, I didn't see any of it with my own eyes.

The only good things I can say are that this is a preseason game and we have one more preseason game before the real season. But I don't like anything else about anything we heard, especially the injuries.

Also, dealer, you flip flop like a pair of flip flops. You were still drinking Todd-Aid long after that ship had sunk, and then you leapt into the Cult of Colt after a couple of good series by the rookie. Good for you. So you're calling out those of us who have steadfastly supported the starting quarterback of our beloved football team? Good for you. Also, wow.
