Jason Taylor - No. 55 In Your Program ... (Updated)
Jasno calls from the practice field to report that the dudes are in pads today. Ladies and gentlemen, stand by for some hitting. Real football commences. ...
Or at least it did for a while. The players were being told to leave the field, fans were being sent to their cars because of storm and hail (literally, "Hail to the Redskins") warnings. (Take that, Weather Gang!)
The team did get in a few 11-on-11 drills, offense vs. defense in full pads. The offense was notable mostly for a series of prodecural penalties. On defense, Demetric Evans was in with the starters with Jason Taylor still rounding into football shape. As he said during his presser Monday, it'll take a few days. He wasn't preparing to report to camp with the Dolphins until Friday. ...
Kareem Moore was back on the field. ... Rocky MacIntosh was present, too, as he continues his recovery. ...
For what it's worth, the Skins are denoting Taylor as a LB/DE on their roster. And he's wearing No. 55 for now and perhaps for good. Taylor has always favored repetitious digits: he wore 33 in college and 55 in the Senior Bowl. Jasno says that Taylor's brother-in-law, a guy named Zach Thomas, is wearing No. 55 with the Cowboys, so perhaps that number will stick for Taylor. For now, Andre Carter remains 99 -- the number, obviously, worn by Taylor in Miami.
Everyone has said he will line up at left end, but he is something of a tweener who could flip-flop between positions. And the LB playing behind him, Marcus Washington, has been asked to play on the edge with his hand on the ground frequently the past few years. (He spent most of last offseason and training camp working with the defensive line in individual drills, in fact.)
No doubt coordinator Greg Blache is going to find several way to fit Taylor into various packages. ...
Missing from the practice field is London Fletcher, but we believe that is likely to be because his wife is giving birth to their second child (they have a little girl). He'd said she was due at any nanosecond. We'll confirm that asap.

Lot of age on the left side. Springs, Marcus, Taylor. Along with Griffin and Fletcher it's do or die time.

Griff is a great player but hasn't been consistant since 05. He has flashes of that since then but this should be his year. If it's not he might be at the end of his career as far as playing at a high level. Overall he is still a great player though. I guess we will see what he has left.

Fair enough. It is quite upsetting to get into it then be hit with a season like 06. I feel like 25 isn't that far out of the question though. If they skins play up to any kind of potential 12 and 13 sacks shouldn't be a problem or even 11 and 14.

With the added Speed/Flexibility of Taylor I like our options of changing the defensive packages while keeping the same squad on the field. It reminds me of what someone mentioned with the option of having 2 receiving TE's. You can line a bunch of guys up anywhere, yet audible into another formation with the same guys. Imagine you think your going up against a 4-3 and then Taylor stands up and goes to essentially a LB position and its essentially 3-4, so the other QB has to change the blocking and stuff, then Taylor and Washington move into a down stance and its a 5-2, or, you bring up a SS/FS in the box put Taylor down again and its a 4-6. So long as the corners stay solid thats a lot looks for a QB to suddenly deal with while the same group of guys is out there.

All this talk of 25 sacks and multiple packages is making me giddy. Now please stop. If there's one thing I've learned the last few years, it's that harsh reality sucks and we tend to get more than our share. There's definitely potential for all of these things to happen but I'm not ready to call in the Pro Bowl jersey orders just yet. I'm definitely excited but trying to keep it tempered for now. Sorry for pi$$ing in the Kool-Aid...

I hear ya, CC - but Carter & Taylor can both break down a double team, so it's kinda sick. I saw someone on the team's reaction was that Taylor could take them to the superbowl - and for a player to say that, that's intense.

I think 25 sacks for the D this year will be no problem. Everything is going to open up this year.
Zorn is on his first year and eager to prove himself. He will let the players play. I love Joe Gibbs but in this day and age, the conservative approach does not work.
I cant remember the number of times where I was able to know in advance which play they would run. I think Zorn will be able to mix things up early on in the season. It will take opposing teams a couple of weeks to find out their tendencies and adjust.
I think with the pressure off the Skins, because people arent expecting much from them, they will be loser and just have fun with it.

By the way, is anyone else bothered by the fact that Zorn and a couple other people are calling the Daniels injury a "tragedy"? Really? Tragic? Unfortunate, inconvenient, even depressing. But how can the one team that had their best player murdered less than a year ago use the word 'tragic' so carelessly?

Zorn's use of "tragic" made me catch my breath, too, in the same way as "maroon and black" did. I think you're going to have to get used to this quirk in his speech. It's his "up here." Les Carpenter, who has known him for a long time, and I discussed this after "maroon and black" and his wardrobe choice for his introductory presser. He just isn't wired to give second thought to those sorts of things.

I don't mine the Maroon and Black thing, or this stupid thing on the new WR's not knowing the nicknames of our old great WR groups. Honestly, there is only one or two "nicknames" worth remembering from Skins history for non-diehard fans, that's the Hogs and the over the hill gang.

Still, I feel real bad for Daniels. That's no way to end a long and productive career. Tragic only in the modern American sense ... like the guy who saves his whole life to retire without worries ... then dies from a heart attack after his retirement party.

I was thinking about the last thing Romo, McNabb and LBM see before they're on their backs--a white, minty smile behind a gold mask.
But that was a nice point, maybe stealing a tagline from chewing gum's not so fearsome after all. Catchy still, but not the "Steel Curtain."

In all seriousness, I have a feeling that Taylor is going to open things up for other guys, but won't necessarily post big numbers himself. I think Carter gets about 12-15 sacks this year and the DTs are freed up to make plays. But with Carter getting the attention, I think he gets about 8-10 sacks this year.
