NFL quarterback of the future may have the last name of Haslett

The Redskins have ID'd a young quarterback that no other team even has on its draft board. That's because the kid isn't draft-eligible for several more years.

While we wait for the team to take attendance at its offseason conditioning program, which began this morning at Redskins Park, we thought we'd pass along this story from earlier this month from the Orlando Sentinel.

It's about prep quarterback Chase Haslett, son of Washington defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, who recently participated in a quarterback camp in Orlando. Chase is a junior and attends high school in Clayton, Mo., just outside the city/county line of St. Louis, where Haslett was formerly defensive coordinator and interim head coach of the Rams.

Not uprooting his son is a big reason Haslett maintains a home in St. Louis and gets back there when he can. As the Sentinel article notes, Chase Haslett could have a bright future playing football, but he's an especially good baseball pitcher. His fastball flirts with 90 mph and he throws a two-seamer, four-seam, curveball, changeup and a cutter.

Of course, Chase has the genes. His father played eight seasons in the NFL and was the league's defensive rookie of the year in 1979.

As if talent and genetics weren't enough, Chase also has the right first name and the proper precedent. Chase Williams, the linebacker son of another Redskins defensive boss, Gregg Williams, starred at Loudoun County High after his father moved on from the Redskins. Chase Williams will play at Virginia Tech in the fall.

Oh, and one more thing in our quest to leave no connection between the Williams and Haslett sons undiscovered or remarked upon: The father of one Chase coaches in New Orleans now; the father of the other Chase formerly did.

He has a 10 yr old and 12 yr ol who are both starting QBs on their respective teams. Look out for them in about 2020 or so.

Book it! (And I can see someone saying in 2020 'Yo! Remember when 4th was talking about these dudes 10 years ago?? Wow...Just Wow...)

A two and four seam fastball, a curve, a change, and a cut ball?

That can be downright filthy if he's on point with his location.

Man, this dude better act like he know and go play baseball. Kid could be a beast for a long time with pitches like that.

For real, if he just had a 90 something mile an hour fastball, a curve, and a change; I'd still say he should play baseball.

Gotta love the idea of having a "Porti-John" in the backfield this season... and with JC17 stinking up the joint as usual... this is going to be one excrementally bad offense!

Rick Maese, get a f+cking grip on reality. You're writing about a high school junior.

Just when you think the posts up here have hit bottom, Maese or Reid stoops down another level. This is getting so bad that even Cork would be an upgrade. Hey, Cork, you know where to send your resume, right?

I guess from the comments that everyone is comfortable with Campbell as the QB for the foreseeable future? I am not comfortable with that scenario but I also dont feel Clausen is the answer....dilemma dilemma

And if he can do this left-handed, he can make 2-3 million a year for the next 10 years, and be able to walk when his career is done.

Go play baseball, kid.

Isn't there a 'Grimm' in this year's draft???

He could be this year's last year's Clay MAtthews. But just moved to safety or 3-4 OLB if he gains 20 lbs.

http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=75366&draftyear=2010&genpos=SS

03/09/10 - "He is just an amazing football player," Oakton head coach Joe Thompson said. "He could do it all at any position on the field. He is one of the best athletes I've ever coached." Surprisingly, it has often been Grimm's athletic ability that is called into question when discussing his chances of playing football professionally. At just 5-foot-11 and 203 pounds, he is a bit undersized for a linebacker, and some say he does not possess the quickness needed to be a safety at the next level. Grimm is sure to have opened some eyes with his performance in Indianapolis, however. After undergoing examinations at a local hospital and sitting through numerous interviews and tests - including the infamous Wonderlic -- he shined during the drill portion of the Combine. Grimm completed the 40-yard dash, the vertical and broad jumps, the 20- and 50-yard shuttles and the three-cone drill. He posted the fastest time of all linebackers in the three-cone drill and the fourth-fastest time in the 40 at 4.64 seconds. "I knew I was capable," he said. "I was just worried because, what if it's your bad day? You always have that day when you don't catch the ball or you don't come out of your breaks well. I was hoping I would do what I was capable of." Thompson hopes that after this showing, NFL scouts will look past Grimm's stature and see the impact he can have on the field. "Anybody that's doubted Cody's ability in the past has gotten burned," he said. "He's proven them wrong. Anyone that takes him will find out that he's going to make plays and he'll be a reliable guy. Anyone who takes a chance on him, they're going to be happy." Grimm has another chance to impress the NFL scouts March 18 at the Virginia Tech pro day workout. After that, he knows it will be out of his hands and he will just wait to hear if his name gets called during next month's NFL draft. - Dave Buschenfeldt, The Fairfax Times

I wish we would of signed Vick... Eagles were smart to get that 2nd year option because they can control where he plays & keep him away from a team like us that could use an upgrade at QB.

Yes, Vick is a definite upgrade over Campbell... It's all about the W's... he's a winner.

One of their QB's is getting traded for some good return & they still will have 2 better QB's than the 'Skins when it's done.

POST this article under, "See boss, I'm workin'."

My God, what a polyglot assemblage of o-line talent; DOCKERY, servicable; RABACH, old; HICKS, unknown; and oh yeah, last years leftovers, WILLIAMS and WILLIAMS, and MONTGOMERY. RINEHART? Newbies like "Danger" WIL ROBINSON, and who? No wonder BUGES called it a career. Jeeze, what a scary bunch.

And we're gonna' have to draft a QB in the first? You've GOT to be kidding me. Maybe a little trade like HAYNESWORTH to a 4-3 club for an o-lineman worth his salt, and a low round draft choice.

No luck at ILB either. Another point of need in a 3-4.

Oh, and NT. A recovering achilles heel player, and I like the kid outta' EAST CAROLINA, LINVAL JOSEPH, but he's been moved up from the fifth to the second round by WALTER football which means he's out of reach for the 'SKINS unless he falls all the way to the fourth round.

Meanwhile the club has players on hooks in the water fishing for:

SOUP - a first.
HEYER - a ????
DOUGHTY - a second ????.
ROGERS - a first.
McINTOSH - a second.
WILSON - a ????
MONTGOMERY, A. - a fifth.

So far not so good.

I think most NFL teams have an assortment of 'players on hooks' hoping that some chump GM gives up picks for them.

But if you look, the talenting unloading/loading browns are so far the only team pretending to be the 2000-2009 redskins.

I kinda like the idea of waiting out the draft and post draft OTAs for suprise cuts before passing any serious judgement on what Shanny and BA are doing.

Don't feel too special, it's not just you. I've commented on others too.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, the Post doesn't have a good relationship with the Skins. Herego, RI doesn't have the "INSIDER" access (i.e. microphones in players' lockers) that certain people are looking for.

And there's a reason this is not ESPN or CNNSI. It's a blog. It's not the be all end all of absolute Redskins truths. It's a good place to get a summation of Skins info from different places, and on occasion, there is some stuff that can't be found elsewhere.

A good majority of folk (myself included) come here to banter with regulars and share opinions and links, etc. with others.

So I guess you can accept that reality, or you can cry and whine every time a new post comes up that you're not crazy about.

But only a fool goes to the desert and complains that there's no water.

And my handle? Not that handles mean much, but yeah I guess I'm crazy for having our last SB MVP winner as such...

Report: Giants win "secret" coin toss, Woody Johnson outraged
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 15, 2010 12:29 PM ET
The Jets don't have to play in Giants Stadium anymore, but they still feel like they are being treated as second class citizens.

The New York Daily News reports Jets owner Woody Johnson is "outraged" after the Giants won a secret coin toss Monday to determine what team gets to play first in the new Meadowlands Stadium. Apparently, no Jets or Giants representatives were in attendance for the flip.

The decision was reportedly made at the league offices, an odd development after a NFL spokesman said Saturday that commissioner Roger Goodell would solely determine the schedule.

Whether the league likes it or not, Johnson's "outrage" is going to create the impression that the decision was conveniently rigged. And the Jets, as usual, got the short end of the stick.

We can't wait to see Tuesday's back pages after this one.

As the Sentinel article notes, Chase Haslett could have a bright future playing football, but he's an especially good baseball pitcher. His fastball flirts with 90 mph and he throws a two-seamer, four-seam, curveball, changeup and a cutter.

Posted by: Flounder21 | March 15, 2010 1:02 PM
==================================
Any surprise that the ESPN's favorite backyard homer team wins the toss? I would bet ESPN's "NYG's first game in the new Meadowland's stadium" Fall Promo's were already in the can before the coin toss.

The NFL Office should of made the toss public...especially given the fact they are Headquartered in Manhattan and possibly would be knee deep in conflict of interest issues.. Goodall being an ex-atty should understand this?

The more we are rumored to be taking clausen the better... lets drum up as much as possible on that... get the Browns, Seahawks, Raiders, I dont know... any other team that needs a qb worried that both Bradford and Cluasen will be gone before they pick... maybe that way they'll trade up with us and give us more picks and let us move back...

I just hope we dont end up taking cluasen haha.

Height & Weight: 6-7 - 314 lbs.

2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

person
Jason Fox, OT, Miami
Jason Fox started 12 games as a true freshman and did not give up a single sack. That is the kind of collegiate career he has had at Miami. Four of those starts in 2006 were at the left tackle position and as a sophomore he started all 12 games on the left side. He has not given up that starting spot since, except for one missed game in 2008. He even got involved in the offense a little bit in 2008, rushing for a five yard touchdown.
At 6-7 and 314 pounds, Fox obviously has the size to turn into a major contributor at the next level. With his tall frame, Fox even has some room to add a little more weight, if an NFL team wanted him to do such a thing. Throughout the years at Miami, he has been slowly adding a few pounds, but there is still room to fill out a little more.

Fox's size alone will get him a long look by every NFL team. There are more talented offensive tackles in this class, but few that have Fox's size and experience. Fox continues to grade out very well during games and he could quickly move up draft boards if he tests well at the NFL Combine.

2/1 Update: Fox injured his knee late in the season, but up until that point he was a pretty dominating offensive tackle in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The injury is a small concern and Fox should be able to put that behind him soon. After that, he is a quality second or third round selection with plenty of experience and potential

Possible mitigating factor to our viewed suckitude: Shanny the New Sherriff is in town. But, at the end of the day, it won't be enough.

VALUE PICK

03/09/2010 - After anchoring the University of Miami offensive line for four seasons, tackle Jason Fox is ready to take his game to the next level. That includes plenty of lifting - and running - and a new diet plan. "I'm on a nutrition plan just to get my body ready for whatever is going to come my way on pro day," said Fox, who will participate in Miami's pro day on March 26th. That workout will be crucial for Fox, who missed most of the NFL Scouting Combine due to a knee injury that also cost him the final two games of his college career. Fox says this time, there will be no limitations. "I expect to go full go," he said. "I have to put on a show. I've been told all 32 teams will be there, so it's going to be a great opportunity." Fox bench pressed 225 pounds for 23 repetitions at the combine but was frustrated that he couldn't compete with the best draft prospects. "It was frustrating, only because I'm a very competitive guy. Once I saw everybody getting out there showing what they've got, I wanted to get out there and show off my athleticism." Sitting out most of the workouts lit a fire under Fox. "There were a lot of good athletes there, a lot of big time players [and] I think I'm right up there with them. I think I can compete with the best. I use that as motivation." Fox started 11 games for Miami in his senior season and was a four year starter on the offensive line. He was also a versatile player, which allowed the Hurricanes to put him at several positions. He's projected to go in the fourth or fifth round of the upcoming draft. - Dylan Brooks, CBS4 Miami

I've said for months up here that the Skins will be offered up as a sacrificial lamb when the Giants open their new stadium, in one of the premium slots that first weekend (the Sunday nighter or Monday nighter). Fox is a solid tackle. A buddy of mine is a huge Canes fan and I watched pretty much everyone of their games this past season... twice he went out during those games for minor injuries, he ended up coming back both times, but while he was out it was obvious that their line was pretty awful without him... pressure consistently and an inability to move the ball... Once he came back, they were anchored better and would then, you guessed it, moved the ball again.... At the end of the year when he got hurt and missed the last two games, Miami struggled.... I do not know if he'll project to a solid LT, but I do think he could come in this year and beat out Heyer for that RT spot. (Then again, I also think that almost anyone could beat out Heyer so, not that if that means anything...)

Did anyone see 'The Pacific' last night?

I wasn't too impressed, might have to watch it again. Too early to judge, but it clearly isn't 'Band of Brothers'.

MOre facts about Fox:

* He was the 2009 Offensive MVP of the team.

* Fox started 47 games in his Miami career. Only William Joseph (50) and Ed Reed (48) had more in their tenure with the Hurricanes.

I've said for months up here that the Skins will be offered up as a sacrificial lamb when the Giants open their new stadium, ....

Posted by: NateinthePDX | March 15, 2010 2:12 PM

If you've been saying it, I didn't hear it. If I heard it, I would have stopped you. If the League or networks want to make a media event about the Giant's first game in the new stadium, it will be against the Colts or the Vikings. Book it ... or book something like it.

I'm guessing that the Skins don't even get a Monday night game this season (but if they do, the night's meme is going to be how this team has "struggled" of late and that this is a "rebuilding" year for the team ... and about how Collinsworth is still a d-bag, as is Joe Buck).

Damn Red...

I recorded the Pacific last night and was getting geeked up to go watch it. I still watch band of Brothers all the time and was hoping this would be close.

Falling off the wagon is my middle name. I have no problem with Okung at #4 and this Fox fella in the second round.

Bingo. After all, we do have zero starting-caliber OTs on the roster as of this moment.

Red-
I agree...Pacific was good but it wasn't anything special last night... I wont say it was bad as i was entertained... I will say that the first episode of BoB wasn't the best either so you gotta give it time to grow... plus I will say that I liked BoB the first time I saw it, but the 2nd time I really did enjoy it a lot more.

Also, anyone watch How to make it in America... HBO's replacement for entourage... so far been pretty decent.

My problem with Pacific is that unlike Band of Brothers there were no basic training scenes that allowed you to get some sense of the characters before the bullets started flying. I have no doubt that it will get better as the series progresses but last night was a bit disappointing.

Mistatoe- how can you argue that any other way? Giants are clearly the Yankees of Football and the Jets are CLEARLY the Mets...

Posted by: peoplearestupid1 | March 15, 2010 2:09 PM | Report abuse

I think the problem with that statement is that the Yankees have won something like 1 of every 4 world series.

I've said for months up here that the Skins will be offered up as a sacrificial lamb when the Giants open their new stadium, in one of the premium slots that first weekend (the Sunday nighter or Monday nighter). It just makes too much sense... the league, with a straight face, can trumpet the great history of this division rivalry while virtually guaranteeing the glorious new stadium will open with a win for the locals.

==================================
too true.. Skins will be the homecoming visiting team for many, this season.
Oh cares, anyway?? Its just a lame duck year to clear Contracts and Cap space and to get Clausen some experience behind center.

This seems to be the biggest issue with the 1st episode.

The minimal character development. I still enjoyed it though. I think by the time it is over we will have a good idea of who's who. They definitely jumped right in this go around.
