Redskins will assign D-back to shadow Michael Vick

Quarterback Michael Vick presents many challenges to a Redskins defense that ranks last statistically in the NFL and faded after halftime during consecutive losses to Houston and St. Louis.

So how should the Redskins prepare to face the three-time Pro Bowler?

"I'm not sure if you do. I don't know if you can," Coach Mike Shanahan said. "Anytime a guy is averaging more than seven yards a carry [7.4], and he's got six touchdowns and no interceptions -- he's very poised and he's got a lot of weapons.  That's one of the reasons why they've had this success.

"He has handled himself extremely well. I've been watching Michael since he has come into the league. And to watch the poise he's playing with right now is really amazing."

Which QB would you rather have: Donovan McNabb or Michael Vick? See what our panelists think on The League blog:

Players have said the Redskins plan to "spy" Vick with a defensive back throughout the game. Linebackers and defensive lineman are neither fast enough nor agile enough to keep pace with the elusive Vick, so defensive coordinator Jim Haslett will always have a safety or a cornerback watching Vick's every move, players said.

But that doesn't necessarily mean the Redskins will be in their nickel packages all game. In fact, Haslett plans to shadow Vick with a defensive back from many of the team's base packages, players said.

The whole league is abuzz about Vick, and he has been sensational, Shanahan said.

"Well, in the two-and-a-half games that he's played in that I've watched him, yeah," Shanahan said. "He has a little bit different type of attack than he had when he was in Atlanta. I've played him a couple of times, and to watch him in the two-and-a-half games and that type of attack that they've had and the type of weapons that they've had, he's taking advantage of every situation."

Vick is running and throwing extremely efficiently, Shanahan said.

"When you can do both, you really present some problems," he said. "When I was in San Francisco and had Steve Young, Steve Young could do it all. He could sit back there and read.

"When he had to make a play when things would break down, he could make plays on his feet. That's what it looks like Michael is doing right now. He can sit back there pretty poised and obviously is very fast and elusive."

(INSERT scene of two die hard green face-painted Philadelphia Eagles' fans in the cheap seats before the Redskins v. Eagles game)

fan 1: So which quarterback do we root for again?

fan 2: The black one.

fan 1: This is gonna be hard.

I've been an iggles fan for eleven years and I've never rooted for a black quarterback.

fan2 reaching into his green hoodie: Well, consider it your Obama moment.

And put dat friggin' cheese steak down, ya' mope.

We need to establish plays at the line of scrimmage before we go with this attack down field philosophy. It is leading to a lot of 2md and 3rd and longs. the run game and short passing games needs to be set up for the downfield stuff to work. Two TE sets utilizing 2 of our 3 best pass catchers is not a bad idea at all, it would also help for when we actually run the ball if we ever actually run the ball.

Gotta be Landry, i hinted to this yesterday. The way he is playing the coaches have trust in him. His mentality is perfect for it and his speed is amazing for his size and physicality.

I have horrible flashbacks of Andre Carter losing ground to Bradford last week when Bradford rolled out. Michael Vick would have just blown his doors off. They absolutely cannot even begin to suggest that Carter is going to prevent a quarterback sweep or option. If I were Haslett, I'd think long and hard about giving Carter a rest in this one.

Facing Vick will be a picnic compared to the following 2 games against Aaron Rogers and Peyton. Do whatever you need to keep Vick at home and beat you through the air and take your chances. A pure pocket passer can destroy this blitz happy defense. If Matt Schaub could throw for over 400 yards, P. Manning might get 600.

I agree with the two tight end sets, but only if they go with one running back. They need more receivers out there. The two tight end, two back formation just doesn't get enough speed on the field to stretch defenses.

Wats up guys?!?!? I agree, hopefully the spy is LL30. I hope the defensive scheme this week is to take away the passing game, and make Vick run. I prefer him taking a couple of shots from Landry, instead of taking shots down the field to Desean. I think the matchup of the day will be Desean and Hall. I don't think Hall has really covered Desean in the past. But one thing is for sure, Hall can keep up with his speed. Unlike Carlos.

Agreed with only one RB, at the same time instead of using CC and FD as the two TE you could use Sellers as a TE, run a couple times w MS in the package so they think its a run only when he is in then play action it deep. But really the more FD and CC are on the field at the same time the better our chances of successfully passing will be.

If the game gets out of hand, Shanny should have Albert shadowing Vick. They could have several oxygen tanks, a defribulator and a surgical team standing by on the sidelines to resuscitate the big guy.

Really just wanted Sellers in to sell the personnel package for the play action later, guess it would work just the same with FD and CC, though i think Sellers blocks just as well standing up as either of them, tough its tough to defend his blocking lately he is slippin.
I really dont like the amount that we have involved Sellers into the game plan, he is far to involved. More passes to FD and CC less looks to MS.

Free Chris Wilson!

Let's end the Andre Carter LB experiment and put in #95 already.

At least C Wil can make tackles in space plus his pursuit angles are more sound.

Over the past 3 games Vick's completion % has trended down, but his avg yards/pass have gone up.

From what I've seen of Vick, he's been effective getting the ball to Maclin/Jackson on deeper routes behind the coverage.

We're gonna need to play Kareem Moore in deep center if LL30 is spying - that's not the traditional set that the safeties take in this 3-4, but I don't see it working any other way.

Take away the deep ball and force Vick to be accurate in the intermediate game.

Problem is that DJax/Maclin can run after catch - need to tackle.

"...roll with Dirty 30 as the shadow and hopefully he cleans Vick's clock a couple times."

Teams have used 'shadows' on Vick before, so I doubt he'll be fazed by this tactic.

The Plan Against Vick?:

--play tight coverage

--don't blitz and force him out into the open field

--make him beat you with his arm

--this game is bigger for K Moore than LL as the skins FS play as been poor all season (not all KM's fault, though)

--jam the receivers at the line and take the occasional 'roughing' call early to influence the refs to allow close play later

--all players in the front 7 must maintain their assigned areas and not overpursue as a speed player will abuse dudes with bad angles

--the iggles pretend to want to run the ball, so play 'nickle' defenses most of the game figuring you'll see the ball in the air

--finally, should Vick take off, go for the strip as he tends to hold the ball loose from his body or with his left hand

He might not throw an interception, but you can go for the strip or fumble.

And in any event, Vick and the iggles saw what the rookie S Bradford and M Schaub did to the skins' secondary over the past two weeks.

It gonna be an ugly game.

For us.

I think the Redskins' denial that they will play the game in the nickel makes it almost a lock that they will be playing the nickel all day against Vick. Maybe they usee LL as a spy, and maybe they don't, but I think you can get too caught up in containing Vick that you allow the Eagles' receivers can have a field day. The Eagles' receivers have speed, so this almost forces you to keep both safeties deep, but then, what safety spies on Vick? I think the nickel makes the most sense - only use a third corner deep and keep LL up tight as a spy.

Posted by: DikShuttle | September 30, 2010 11:11 AM | Report abuse

Vick is playing behind a very shaky o-line for a coach who forgets about running the ball for long stretches of games. The question to me is whether you sit back and wait for Vick to make a mistake throwing the ball, or pressure him in the hopes that you can force him to make a mistake. I think Vick is at his best in a "broken play" scenario, which happens more when you force the issue. So I would like to see the Skins sit back, try to disguise coverages and play a good bit of zone, and see if they can't generate sufficient pressure without blitzing. I refuse to believe Vick is somehow no longer liable to make mistakes.

But now that I have seen 3 games and the ugliness involved, I have had the optimism crushed from me. I'm now projecting a 3-13 season. I'm sick over it, but I don't see how they can do much better. Maybe they take a game against the Giants, but I expect them to improve. Another season down the drain. And what does the future look like? Sorry....Grim. You just took it that way. Hey, I called that dude czest (whatever?) the King of the NERDS, and he didn't freak out. He took it like it was intended, A JOKE!!! He even said something to the effect of "All my loyal subjects". Not trying to get anybody mad today, I think I did that enough to Stu!!!

FWIW Trevor Pryce signed with the Jets. The Ravens tried to play the roster game, and Pryce stuck it to them.

Clearly someone has to "sweep the leg" on Vick!!!

Jets bringing in former Ravens DL Trevor Pryce - thought we might go after him :(

Posted by: Lisa_R | September 30, 2010 11:15 AM

Me too...I'm starting to think that having played for Shanahan in Denver is a reason guys stay away from the Redskins instead going to them. I wanted to see us make a run at Brandon Stokley and they never as much as had him in for a workout...

Maybe I'm just outta the loop, but has anyone ever seen the ass on this chick Buffie? O...M...G...

I concur with Dik.

Let us commence with doing this.

Posted by: freakzilla | September 30, 2010 11:34 AM | Report abuse

I would like to make it clear that NEITHER monk nor RSH are "the guy who's always right".

That would be me. I'm the guy who's always right. Just ask Mrs. Shuttle.

Oh I do...called you Ogre last week I think haha

I was kinda looking forward to the McNabb v Kolb matchup in this one...with all the hoopla over the offseason...oh well...hope we bring Vick back down to earth on Sunday!

Posted by: PlayAction | September 30, 2010 11:34 AM | Report abuse

Stokley is older and slower....We need a new Great White Hope...

And that's why I was mad we didn't go after Shipley...He's doing good things in Cincy...and that would have been our #2 WR.....

Posted by: 4thFloor | September 30, 2010 11:36 AM | Report abuse

Good stuff TWISI...maybe now the Jets release Shaun Ellis and we can make a run at him instead...

I'm sure you've convinced him you are funny now.

And if you haven't, I'm sure you will eventually. Keep at it.

monk = stand-up comedian who takes time to explain punchline to every person who doesn't appreciate his joke = NERD

Maybe Furrey was supposed to fill that role for the skins...but he got donked on the head.

Brownwood, the picture of the "lady" with the ginormus rear end....in your opinion it's freakishly appealing...or freakishly off-putting?

Posted by: MColeman51 | September 30, 2010 11:42 AM | Report abuse

And he didn't go off the board until mid-4th.....wow....did no one watch Texas play the last 4 years?

brown, DL isn't exactly the problem...I'd rather see them find out what they have in Jarmon before they bring in someone....

OFMG! To let some tell it up here (psps) all his players mourned him when he left Denver, wore yellow ribbons around their pinkie fingers, and all held hands and sang 'Cry on' by 112.

Posted by: RedDMV | September 30, 2010 11:45 AM | Report abuse

4th, I wanted Stokley as a stop gap for this season, nothing more...you'd never hear me argue against getting a younger, faster option like Shipley...

The db from Maryland (can't remember his name), he's supposed to be a bad-a$$, maybe he can shadow Vick

take a game against the giants..it is obvious you have not watched washington play n.y. it seems like 60yrs since they have beaten them and as of now I don't see it changing. d. hall is NOT faster than d.jackson he may be able to stay with him for 10-15 yds after that jackson will hit another gear. washington has NO power at many positions namely NT if they could get push up the middle and force vick to move right or left that would give them a chance if no push he has middle, right and left or just sit back and throw, they need to change it up with the spy strategy different CB's even barnes spying and blitzing(he is a hard hitter at CB)

His record with the Falcons was never that great so we need to stop acting like he is impossible to stop
