Three defensive calls Jim Haslett would like to have back

Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett blitzed frequently in the second half and overtime Sunday as the Redskins squandered a 17-point, third-quarter lead and lost, 30-27, in overtime to the Houston Texans.

Haslett is an aggressive play-caller and blitzing is a major component of the team's new 3-4 scheme.

There were, however, three blitzes Haslett acknowledged he should not have called: on a screen pass in the third quarter that resulted in a 50-yard catch and run by Arian Foster and led to a touchdown as time expired in the quarter; the fourth-and-10 play late in the fourth quarter that resulted in a 34-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Schaub to wide reciever Andre Johnson; and the 28-yard pass from Schaub to tight end Joel Dreessen on third down that set up the game-winning field goal.

"Basically, it was three plays," Haslett said Wednesday. "The screen. Bad call. I take the blame on that. It wasn't a good call. We didn't play it the way I would have liked. It wasn't a good call for that situation.

"Then we played a Tampa-2, which they played here last year. We didn't play it right. They got a third down [conversion for a first down] on us. And then the fourth down, when he just chucked it up at then end, we should have had two guys on 'em. If you take away those three plays, we would have the game."

Funny -- TMQ also said the same thing about the blitz on the 4th and 10 play. So if it was so obviously not a good situation to blitz, why did Has run a blitz? My thought is that he did not feel the rush was generating enough pressure on its own.

LOL, you don't get to take crappy calls back.

3 calls I wish I hadn't made
1. going 3-4
2. nixing the 4-3
3. the 2nd half of the Texans super-choker

4th and 10

I can see the thinking that you call a blitz to force a rushed/bad throw from the QB.

He seems to regret the coverage in the end zone on that play more than anything.

Basically calling out Reed Doughty and Philip Buchanon.

Pretty much the same as DeAngelo Hall.

Man, Haslett is such a big meanie attacking the players' self-esteem that way. He needs sensitivity-counseling. After all you can't dog Reed Doughty like that, with him being all hard-working and having a bad ear and everything.

Also, Raiders should trade Campbell to AZ, where he should have gone all along. Much better fit for Campbell and much better than anything AZ has.

Raiders net out positive on it because they got Campbell for next to nothing and should be able to get something for him.

AZ nets out because their current QB is Derek Anderson.

Never been an Archie Manning fan, and his "no rings" quote was garbage. Archie didn't like that the Chargers thought Rivers would be a better QB than eli. Turns out Smith was right and its not been close.

AJ Smith put together a very talented team -- and foolishly decided it was better to have a mediocre coach in Norv than one who he didn't like in Schottenheimer. Bad choice.

I can understand blitzing on the 4th down play, but on 3rd and long when the screen was completed, they should have just backed off. Regardless of the fact that AJ is a great WR, if Doughty wouldn't have inexplicably started losing his balance like a 2 yr old, he could have easily batted that pass away.

AJ Smith is a brilliant scout/talent assessor.

He's also an awful egomaniac that let's his emotions get in the way of sound judgment.

First he canned Marty after going 14-2, now he's saying "eff you" to his pro-bowl LT and WR. And not only that, he's also blown his chance to get the best possible value for VJ. Rather than taking a 2nd rounder + conditional pick, VJax will walk away and the most SD will possibly get is a late 3rd rounder. And that's only if they don't sign anybody in free agency, and VJax doesn't give a parting shot by working his deal to eff the Chargers.

This could be a fireable offense. That's awful management.

Campbell needs a decent OL in front of him. When had that here, he had a 6-2 start and 100-ish rating.

Formula for Campbell is -- decent OL, big WRs, good TE, RB that can catch and run. AZ has all of those things, 'cept the TE where they are so-so.

Oakland has the RB and TE part, but their OL was almost as bad as ours in 2009, and it actually got worse as they had some injury issues. Their WRs drop a lot of passes.

Sorry to see Campbell blowing up in Oakland. Never understood why people thought it was a good fit. Can't put him behind a bad OL.

Gradkowski is the mobile guy who is a lot more like Jeff Garcia or romo, moving out of the pocket a lot more and throwing on the run. If you've got a bad OL, you want a guy who can get out of there (see vick in philly -- the philly OL is realy dinged up). Problem with Gradkowski is that he gets hit and hurt. In the last year, I think he's had surgeries for both knees and a torn pec.

I think that sums it up pretty well. Plus, you know a lot of guys will want to get out of SD so they don't get Vjax'd at some point. The next CBA will change the rules, don't know what they will be.

But I'm thinking a lot of players and agents will want to leave SD at the first opportunity, and not get caught up in Smith's ego trips.

What Campbell had when we went 6-2 was the best running game in the NFL (at the time) propping him up, allowing him to operate without pressure or expectation to carry the team.

Any QB will look alright when they have that.

Once that vanished we all got a glimpse of the "real" Jason Campbell - a flustered deer in the headlights who either holds onto the ball too long and takes a sack b/c he's too slow to read a defense and find a receiver or immediately checks down b/c he panics.

The Raiders were the only team stupid enough to take a flyer on Campbell. Now he's done.

No one is going to go out and get a QB who requires everyone around him to be perfect in order to make some plays and score some TDs...and that's what campbell is.

p1, I'm so surprised you're being so short-sighted on this, but something tels me you're not doing so through ignorance but more to keep backing your weak argument.

Listen, everyone, including me knows what Hall said was true. But it doesn't excuse the way he went about making his comments. What about this are you not getting? I'll simplify it for you:

Hall's comments: Good
The way he went about making those comments: Bad

It's that simple really.

I know you've defended Hall up here like he was your adopted brother. I get it, you adore the guy. But I hate to break it to you, but Hall's not perfect. He made a mistake the way he went about his comments something HE, Hall, admitted to. He said I should've went about it differently, but stood behind what he said.

"Hall emphasized he did not intend to offend anyone. "It comes out a little harsh, a little brash, in heat of the moment," Hall said. "If I could go back and say those words differently, I would have. But I said them and I meant them."

If he can admit it, why can't you? Oh, I forgot. You're always right no matter what the facts or the sources say. And why should you be wrong? You used to practice law. You know every damn thing.

Save the kleenxes. Use them to wipe up your weak ass point.

what a tough loss
I haven't seen the offense look that good in years and then to fold just like we always do, im used to seeing us s**t away leads at home, it's like our calling card.

if we could have run the football, we could have killed the clock and killed the texans

sure you can say it was those 3 terrible plays, but we tried to get into a shootout with the texans and we got blasted in the end

the general philosophy might be at fault or the fact that our personnel isnt ready to finish off games against really good teams, sound familiar?

but hey it was a fun game, mcnabb is the deal and im still happy w/ landry, orakpo and williams as our core youngsters going into the next few years

game still sucked

Posted by: wisdom80 | September 22, 2010 1:41 PM

At this point I would welcome mediocre when it comes to the run game.

The sad thing is that Williams went undrafted in last years draft because he ran a pedestrian 4.8 forty. What's even sadder is how much quicker he looks when compared to CP.

How about 3 players I'd like to give back....

Reed Doughty- Watching the reply last night really showed how terrible he is.

Stephon Heyer- I don't think a comment is even necessary. AWFUL...

Phillip Buchanon- Hasn't been productive in this league since 2006.

And then the fourth down, when he just chucked it up at then end, we should have had two guys on 'em. If you take away those three plays, we would have the game.

Woody Harrelson showed that white guys can't jump. Reed Doughty showed that white guys ain't got no technique. He knew he wasn't going outjump Andre. What he should have did is at the point where Andre catches the ball, his arms extended and stretched out, so thrust hisself between the ball and Andre's body, thus denying Andre any way to hang on to it. It called technique.

Agreed that we need more safeties with decent cover skills. We seem to be in between our second and third defensive regime change in four years, with a mishmash of all the previous regimes's notions on how to play defense- we're just all over the place. Sean Taylor has never been adequately replaced...And 40 times are not the endall-be-all of judge the speed of a player- like I said, McCluster and Dante Hall are 4.5s, but they've got GEARS which kick'em into the "Blue Bayou"..I believe Taylor and the Saints FS (chelada on the brain reads 5.3, sorry) are/were 4.5s..40 times are not the true judge of a man, particularly if you're drinking 40s of Hurricane..

We need more cover safeties, agreed, just sayin'..

I believe there was a weak-side blitz which disrupted the rhythm of the play and it ended up Andre, having completed his route, was standing in the end-zone waiting for Shaub to throw him the ball. One safety should be able to cover a motionless WR even if the WR can outjump him. Putting an additional DB on Andre means sacrificing manpower somewhere else and the play probably does not unfold the way it did.

SS Craig Dahl suffered a concussion last week

Starting DT Darrell Scott suffered a high ankle sprain and is out

Staring DT Clifton Ryan, who missed last week's game with migraines, still uncertain.

LB Chris Chamberlain is in a walking boot

YES. You DO want a mobile QB behind a crap line (see our first two games). Actually, I think our line is (was?) pretty improved considering.

But, what irked the dung outta me was when we threw Trent Green away like he was Colt Brennan's girlfriend's brother. I know it was a long time ago, but I thought that was very boneheaded. He was the only QB we had with any feet at all.

The other one, of course, was when Drew Brees was available and Redskins Park refused to even ACKNOWLEDGE he was available. I could say the same for when Doug Flutie was available, too. But, we're talking Drew Super Bowl Brees, here.

And the fans? Nobody said Nothin. Just stared at eachother. Like I"M The Crazy One. DONT THINK SO! I said Drew Brees. You people just stared at me! Now, look. LOOOK!

That's right. I also said Doug Flutie and I'm not taking it back. We've had BUMB QBs since Rypien got his big contract in, what, 1991? Trent Green was pretty good behind a trash pail line. Gannon was still a loose cannon back in those days, but had potential.

BUT WHEN DREW BREES WAS ON THE STREET, WE HAD G'DAMN MARK "I INVENTED THE CHECKDOWN, NOT CAMPBELL, AND I EVEN THROW IT AWAY ON 3RD DOWN, SO THERE" BRUNELL!

Lower case, all caps, what does it matter? Nobody listens. Nobody listens. They're too smart to listen. They already know it all. They play fantasy and madden. Real football is just a hybrid of those two insight-building pass-times. Shanahan, please, help us.

NOT. My Brother is the King on the throne. He goes 5, 6 times a day, easily. The trick is to eat only hotdogs. ONLY hotdogs. Packages of them, no bread, just ketchup and mustard. Every. Day.

OH, I almost forgot the most important part! Non-Stop Coffee intake. Non stop. Well, you can stop for an hour or so if it's hot, but you have to remember to switch to Pepsi, which you guzzle, not drink. Put down about 3-4 cans of Pepsi in that hour, and then right back to coffee. And hot dogs.

Sometimes he gets fancy. If pasta sauce is on sale, he's in for a week of that. If some Chinese mystery fish is on sale for cheaper than hot dogs, he's in. Sale chicken? Puts birds away, 2 at a time, doused in sale BBQ sauce. And he can eat buddy.

I used to yell at him for so many dumps. "No wonder you eat so much, you F#$%#r!" "Quit blowin up my toilet every couple hours!"

So, he's expensive when it comes to feeding him, caffeinating him, and allowing him to blast through rolls of toilet paper like nobody's business.

Yeah. Gotta love the Brother Man. There's just no being a Gracious Host when he comes to town. I call it at the door. "Buy your own coffee, these are your plates, don't touch the others and don't mix them in, buy your own Pepsi, and your own cigarettes. As your Gracious Host, I will supply the toilet paper for your Daily Dung Marathon."

Sadly, not kidding.

Red Dog tastes like Red Dog Piss.

God, I don't miss drinking lots of crappy beer.

I don't think they do make Red Dog anymore. They probably changed the label to "Belgian Wheat Micro Brew Ale"

I bought some supposed Belgian wheat beer a couple weeks back (it was on sale and had a nice label). Bought a six pack. Took the first sip, and wished I could have taken THAT call back.

And I was staring at six full bitter crap beers. What could I do? Polished 'em off as fast as possible. Wont let it happen again. I think I found out what happened to Red Dog, though.

Another reason to drink either Seirra Nevada and/or anything produced by Stone Brewery:

(Sept. 22) -- The California Beer & Beverage Distributors, an industry lobbying group, is spending money to torpedo Proposition 19, a November ballot initiative that would legalize marijuana in the state...................

Not all beer producers feel the same way. Two notable microbrewers, Sierra Nevada and Stone Brewing Co., have protested CBBD's campaign.

Sorry to interrupt the riveting poop topic (eye roll), but here's some actual Redskins related material from Keim over at the Examiner:

1. What I don’t know about Trent Williams: if he’ll play Sunday. What I do know about Trent: He couldn’t practice Wednesday because of his knee/toe injuries and he was limping noticeably as he returned to the facility after practice. Not a good sign.

2. But free safety Kareem Moore did practice in full for the first time since his Aug. 23 arthroscopic knee surgery. Not sure if he’ll play either, but, yes, this is a good sign. “I love having him because he gives you a little more speed on the back end, a little more athleticism,” defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said.

3. Back to Williams. If he can’t play, it seems rather clear that the players expect Stephon Heyer to fill in for him rather than move Jammal Brown there from the right side. “I guess they’ve got Steph over there and we’ll roll with that,” said Brown, a two-time Pro Bowler at left tackle in New Orleans.

And there’s this: “Hopefully Stephon can play at a high level for us,” center Casey Rabach said.

Also, keep in mind that Brown has not taken a snap at left tackle since last summer with New Orleans.

4. By the way, Brown did say he’s still not comfortable at right tackle. “Not really, but we’re still working on it,” Brown said. “It’s just making sure of the footwork and things like that.”

5. Wide receiver Anthony Armstrong (groin) and safety Chris Horton (ankle) also did not practice. Defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth (ankle) was limited. Armstrong said he will play, but players always are optimistic about their chances of playing. So who knows. But groin injuries for speed guys are never a good thing.

6. Haslett wasn’t bothered by DeAngelo Hall’s comments Monday. It helps that he’s a former player, no doubt, and understands where Hall is coming from. “The good corners I’ve been around all have that mentality,” he said. “I’d be disappointed if he didn’t have that mentality. I give him all the credit for saying that, to be honest with you.”

Nor was he upset that Hall said it was his team; his defense. “No! It is their team. Players play. Coaches, we coach.”

7. The problem with having Hall play the best receiver all game is that it doesn’t always make sense. Hall hasn’t worked much covering in the slot, which would present a problem if that’s where the receiver lined up. Also, if the Redskins want to disguise coverages, it’s harder to do so if Hall lines up across a receiver who then goes in motion – taking Hall with him.
But Haslett did say he’s “open to anything.” So there likely will be times where it happens.

8. Also, when the Redskins face the Colts and Reggie Wayne, for example, it’s likely that Carlos Rogers is a better matchup. Hall’s size – he’s 5-foot-10 – makes it tough for him to cover every type of receiver.

9. Here’s my story on how the Redskins blitz fared Sunday. My take? The blitz is not the issue; it was the coverage. Way too many guys running free. Also, it’s a lot of fun to watch some of these blitzes and how they’re orchestrated.

10. Want to know why Vonnie Holliday is valuable? Because he knows what to do in this defense. Haslett said it last week, but when you watch him it’s very subtle. He’s not a great player, but it’s the simple ability to do what they want that helps. Just having him slant to a side makes a difference. For example, he lined up at left end on one snap and slanted inside, taking the guard and occupying the center. The linebacker on that side went wide, taking the tackle. It creates a blitz lane for either the linebacker or safety. It happened a couple times. But if Holliday doesn’t do it the right way, it doesn’t work.

11. Gotta give Derrick Dockery credit for how he’s handling the rotation at guard. He said he wasn’t surprised, which is hard to believe. Then he said, “What are you gonna do about it? You gonna cry about it? Pout about it? You just have to go out and play ball.”

And he said this about Kory Lichtensteiger: “I mean Kory deserves a shot. He had a really good preseason, he had a good offseason and coach said he wanted to give him a shot.”

12. Corner Phillip Buchanon admitted that was expecting Houston to throw a shorter pass on that fourth and 10. Instead, the Texans threw 34 yards for a touchdown. Buchanon covered Andre Johnson off the line, then turned in and appeared to have passed him off to safety Reed Doughty. But Buchanon was supposed to stay on him so it would be doubled. He just blew the coverage.

"Andre looked back for the ball and kind of stopped and once he stopped I stoppec because I thought the ball was coming," Buchanon said. "Then he drifted and the ball was in the air."

13. Larry Johnson, of course, was a minor topic today. Though some players expressed surprise, it's hard to imagine them being too shocked. Johnson wasn't getting it done. He looked good during summer practices, but those can be tricky to judge running backs since there's no tackling. You don't get a sense of how a guy is really running.

But coach Mike Shanahan said there's a chance Johnson could return. Clearly, Chad Simpson was signed to help on special teams, likely as a returner. That could mean an increased role for Devin Thomas on offense (which likely would only happen if Armstrong can't play).

14. Forgot to address the Vincent Jackson trade rumors earlier. Here's one GM on why teams would not give up a lot for a receiver at this point in the season: "They're not giving him away and the team that's getting him, he's already missed the OTAs, the preseason and he'll have a three-game suspension. It makes no sense. I'll give you a sixth for him. And then you have to throw in a contract. It's too much to give up. When has a guy ever come in that's impacted a team during the season?... And when guys hold out, they never have the year that everyone thought they would have."

This GM was consistent in saying he didn't think Jackson would be traded because the Chargers asking price hasn't, and won't, change.

15. Haslett said he would like three plays back vs. Houston: the screen pass (in which the Texans caught them blitzing), the pass to tight end Joel Dreessen over Chris Horton on the game-tying drive and the touchdown to Johnson. He even said if you take those plays away, the Redskins win. That's a silly game to play; you can't take plays away -- and the Texans could say the same thing about a few plays as well. But in fairness to Haslett, he almost seemed to be half-joking when he said it.

az should go after campbell because he can easily learn a new offense again and again.

Lets be honest here for a minute.

The defense actually gave up a last second touchdown in the first game (although it didnt hold up), they then turn around and give up another last second TD that stood. Something has to be done in the secondary to prevent this from happening for what seems to be on a regular basis now. Im one to beleive that had "fat" albert been in commanding a double team up front one of the DEs or LBs would have been free to put more pressure on schuab. For the lack of a running game the offense was still able to put 20 points on the board (defense gets 7). Im glad Haslett admited to some mistakes that he made, but this should not have happened two weeks in a row.
