Zorn: Portis 50-50 for Sunday

Clinton Portis is questionable at this point and his chances of facing Dallas on Sunday are "50-50," Coach Jim Zorn said after practice today. Portis has a knee sprain that has worsened since the team last played Nov. 3.

Zorn remains optimistic that Portis will play, but conceded that "it would be a major issue for all of us," if he cannot. Zorn said that second-string back Ladell Betts may be back from his knee injury for Sunday's game, but that he is not "expecting" that result.

Should the Redskins be without Betts and Portis, Zorn said RB Rock Cartwright would continue to return kicks, but would have some of his other special teams work curtailed given the shortage of available runners. If Betts returns and Portis is out, Zorn said Betts would play ahead of Shaun Alexander, but that it very well could be " a community position."

Santana Moss's hamstring is still "a little tentative," but Zorn said he expects Moss to play Sunday. Defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery got an injection for his injured Achilles' and it's doubtful that he will practice this week, Zorn said. That means he is not likely to play Sunday.

Back-up quarterback Todd Collins will rejoin the team for practice Wednesday; he was hospitalized for a severe sinus infection and ruptured eardrum during the bye in Boston and could not fly back. Zorn said that despite what was clearly a painful bye week, Collins will practice Wednesday and is driving back from Boston.

Shawn Springs and Jason Taylor are still expected to play Sunday. Taylor's wound on his calf is now fully healed, Zorn said, and his swelling has dissipated. Wide receiver Malcolm Kelly will be pushed hard this week when the team puts on the pads starting Wednesday, with Zorn deciding this week whether to place him on the injured reserve list with his knee injury or try to activate him soon.

"I hope on Sunday I have a difficult decision [on which receivers to dress]," Zorn said, though he still spoke cryptically of being able to have the rookie down the stretch.

If 26 can't go I say give Rock the start. Given Dallas's weak run defense, what better week for him to go. And don't forget he got a 100-yard game a few seasons ago in the only game he's received serious playing time at RB.

Instead of towels, they should give out lanyards. Terrible lanyards. Maybe add whistles. Everyone loves whistles. Yes, terrible whistle lanyards. Make it so.

++++Yeah, the Randy Moss example really makes me hope that his performance this season so far was related to the desperate, poisonous atmosphere that Crazy Al Davis has created in Oakland.+++ Posted by: mgm2rr

Unless he was disguised as Bobby Petrino, it wasn’t Crazy Al that fined Hall 100 large and shipped his butt TOO Oakland. He couldn’t’ play in Atl, couldn’tplay in Oakland, but now everything will be hunky dory here in DC, right. Could be, but it’s like hitting 20. --CORK
+++Its hard to play at 100% for such an aimless team with no clear leadership or continuity in the organization +++

You’re right of course. What should they expect for their $70 million, professionalism? I’m not doubting the atmosphere in Oakland is poisonous, but 52 players WEREN’T cut from that team, and a Good Character Guys wouldn’t phone it in while trying to escape a bad situation.

I hope DH is deliriously happy here and gets all his Mad Skillz and then some back—but it is far from the done deal, slam dunk the Vinny-o-files claim.

Ugh. This could be B-A-D. Not as worried about the running game as much as how this will affect the passing game. Dallas will send everything they have on passing downs without Portis (or with a hurting Portis) in there. Neither Shaun, Rock, or Betts can block like CP. Thinking about D Ware lining up against the likes of Jansen without Portis in there is very scary.

my thought, too. I am pretty sure Portis will play and I'm pretty sure he'll be over 50%. I doubt he's 100%, but he's at least 85-90% right now.

This is gonna be :

1) Something to throw off the Girls
2) A way Portis can sit out practice without the, cough, media saying Portis does what Portis wants.
3) a way for Portis to get more rest since he really needs it.

Portis will play and we'll be fine.

Even if he doesn't I'm confident in Rock and Betts is questionable for Sunday as well, so maybe we could get some runs out of him.

Excellent point. But I'll say this about Zorn and Co. When it comes to injury reports they have mastered the art of pettifoggery.

Usually they claim a guy will be ready to go by game time, but then comes the opening whistle, and the dudes are in Mufiti on the sidelines.

Let us hope, better yet, lettuce spray that it's the opposite here and Portis and Moss show up with bells on. (which sure beats those crappy yellow shoes).

There was also the issue of the game being on Monday night. I suspect a lot of ticketholders have Sunday set aside for Skins, but can't make that late night commitment because of work. So they sell their tickets.

Posted by: frediefritz | November 10, 2008 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Rock Cartwright (in the backfield) was also part of several of those sacks on Jason Campbell. I love Rock, but why would the "committee" only include Rock and Shaun Alexander? Why isn't Sellers the obvious upstepper in this situation? Keep Sellers as the personal QB protector and become like the Titans yesterday. If the running game shuts down, the passing game has to open up. I know that at least SOME part of the preseason was dedicated to installation of a West Coast offense. Is there a back on the practice squad who can be elevated? It would be bad if the Skins became Denver before the half. Lorenzo Alexander is facing a long day on both sides of the ball. Also, why come are we only hearing about Portis' ding getting upgraded to an owie today?

"EVERGREEN, Ala. (AP) -- A man and woman were shot dead after an argument that witnesses said started over an Alabama-LSU football game, but sheriff's investigators said Monday they continued to investigate the motive.

The Conecuh County sheriff's office identified the victims as Dennis James Smith, 41, and Donna Kaye Hall Smith, 39, of Brewton. The two were shot to death about 7 p.m. Saturday in the rural community of Owassa in southern Alabama.

Michael W. Williams, 28, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder over the shooting at his home, where he had watched the game. He was being held Monday without bond. A sheriff's investigator handling the case did not know if he had an attorney.

An investigator said Monday that people watching the game at Williams' home said the dispute was over the game, which Alabama won 27-21 in overtime Saturday, but an investigation into the motive was not complete. The investigator also said alcohol may have been a factor.

According to witness accounts to investigators, Dennis Smith, an LSU fan, called Williams, an Alabama fan, after the game, and the Smiths then went to Williams' home, where a physical altercation led to the shooting.

Investigators said Dennis Smith had a pistol and Williams had a shotgun and fired.

Authorities said Donna Smith was a relative of Williams' girlfriend.

Relatives of both the victims and the suspect either declined comment or did not immediately return phone messages Monday from The Associated Press."

Re: the stadium sucking. There are PLENTY of people who would love to sit in a sucky stadium. I now have season tickets (sold my non-NFC East and Saints tickets to another fan - rule I have), but when I did not, I got some obstructed view seats for the Sunday night Eagles game a few years ago(we won). I was just so excited to be at the game. The seats were hysterical (it was like sitting in someone's basement and you actually had to watch most of the game from a TV because you couldn't see the field, but we were there and that's all that matters. my seats last year were in the very last row of the stadium, but we had a blast at every game. So if people don't want to go to the games b/c they don't like the stadium, then give up their tickets - there are lots of people that would glady take their names off the list and "suffer" with the sucky stadium. I mean, if you can see the field and find something to use to bang on the seats (I find that an empty plastic beer bottle works well) to make noise, it's the perfect way to spend some time on a Sunday.

Hall played RB in High School (Deep Creek, VA), but played only CB in college at Tech. He is fast as hell obviously, but I don't think you would want him to line up in the pros and expect him to run between tackles.

Alexander will be able to carry the load if CP can't go- but I am like most people and think that come sunday-CP will be good to go.

But like posted earlier, I believe the real problem is pass protection- something CP does extremely well. Jansen had a great run for awhile early in the season, but I he isn't nearly as good at pass protection as he used to be and will need a lot of help from the RBs or TEs to get through Dallas, NY Giants and, Eagles (all big games)

What's not breaking news is that CP is a bad mofo and will do everything he can to play. I think fredieefriz is right, he got hurt on that submarine job by Polamalu. If you look at the slow mo reply, we're lucky he didn't break his leg.

Man, I thought teams were supposed to get healthy during the bye week......really hope Ladell is ready.

Polamalu's hit on his knee also bruised his femur and that's what is probably going to take longer to heal...CP will do anything he can to play, but the Skins better hope that Bettis is ready to take half of the snaps on Sunday or Mike Sellers will be in on all passing downs to help against DeMarcus Ware. Portis is not only our best runner, but best blocker in pass protection. If Zorn says he's 50/50, it doesn't sound very optimistic.

CP's been dinged up since the Cleveland game and it only got worse with that hit on Monday night. If CP and Moss are both out on Sunday night, this could be a long night as Sean Alexander will curl up in the fetal position before plowing ahead for yardage or picking up a blitzer. Maybe Sellers gets his wishes for a few carries on Sunday night.

Heck man, if Portis can't go, I say use Mike Sellars at Tailback and bulldoze people like Brandon Jacobs does. Use Two TE and pound Sellars.

If Campbell has ball fakery skills there could be a chance. Fake play action, hand the ball to the Tip Toe Burglar who curls up in a feeble position behind Jensen. After the front seven whiz past Big J then TTB unfurls hisself from the feeble postion and scores mucho yardage before he trips over a a blade of grass and falls down.

Whatever - I will lose all respect for Portis if he doesn't play on Sunday. I understand he's on pace for 10000+ carries, and is the focal point of this team. Considering he had 2 weeks to heal a knee injury he hurt in the Steelers game, you would think he would spend Sunday night resting that knee instead of PARTYING IT UP AT PARK!! Hmm, the knee was obviously well enough for him to hit the clubs, but not play on Sunday?

Jansen can't run block against good teams(NYG,PITT) and he can't pass block against any team so we must get Heyer in there or else Campbell will get hurt.
