Bugel Returns to Redskins

We had access to a few players and coaches before the start of practice. Here's a brief overview:

Offensive line coach Joe Bugel has returned to the team after spending last week with his daughter Holly, who is battling a rare form of cancer, and family. Holly continues to battle the illness, according to the team, and Bugel has asked that we thank the fans and the Redskins family for their prayers and support. Bugel will not be speaking to the media, however, as he gets back to work this week and continues to deal with his family obligations.

"He's a family member to us," said tackle Jon Jansen, the longest-serving player on the roster. "It's hard to see a member of your family go through what he's had to go through. I can't even understand it. But we love to have him back, and anything he needs we're here for him."

CB Carlos Rogers said he came out of Saturday's game feeling well and expects to play more this weekend, maybe 25 plays or more. He took part in the nickel package in a limited role against the Jets, but said he didn't get a chance to get in on many tackles and really test his surgically repaired knee.

RB Marcus Mason (Georgetown Prep), obviously, had another fine night rushing but spoke more about his performance on special teams, which he realizes is how he can ultimately make this team. Again, I think he makes it as the fourth RB, but that's gotta be a guy you can trust to perform on teams. Mason was better positioned and got involved in some tackles as well. "I'm getting better," Mason said. "I didn't make any tackles last year."

TE Jason Goode (Maryland) said he suffered his turf toe injury before making the game-winning touchdown reception Saturday. He injured the toe earlier in the fourth quarter, and it's been a whirlwind for him since, going from making a big play in the game to dealing with an injury and facing possibly being cut in a few weeks with three tight ends ahead of him on the depth chart. For now, though, he is relishing the accomplishment, saying calls have come in from "family, Terps, friends, all of the above." Goode has a walking boot on the right foot and is expected to miss at least a week.

Reserve center Justin Geisinger, who in my mind has essentially made the team with no other backup centers here, says he will take part in some aspects of today's practice. Geisinger suffered a mild knee sprain last week but has had a nice camp overall. "It's a minor setback and I'll be ready this week," he said.

Nuthin' but love Coach Bugel and family!

I'd take the DEs 10 times out of 10. It's FAR more important to have a nice rotation of DEs than it is to have a bunch of pass catchers on a running team. Plus we wouldn't have to give up a 2nd rounder to get JT.

Posted by: brownwood26 | August 18, 2008 12:33 PM

The Skins are not a running team and have not been a running team for some years. This inspite of Gibbs trying to make them into a running team. We have not had the OL to be a running team and Zorn's offense will not make this a running team. Hence we drafted three "pass catchers".

I'm still going with Usain Bolt as the Skins new WR. Even Darrell Green couldn't run with that guy.

He has the character of a WR the way he was celebrating!

Bolt run was crazy. The kid could have gone 9.59

Best of luck to Daughter Hog. I think I know what's wrong with the line, Jansen's RV has made them week and used to luxury. Get that line meeting in a wood shed to drink and then we will have some players.

Don can you remind me again the skins single season rushing leader....CP in 2005...or how we made Betts look like a starter when he ran over 1000 yards in 2/3rds of a season on a team that couldn't pass....just idiotic, nice work bro!

Disagree. Skins OL is best at run blocking ... assuming they are all healthy.

Jason Goode injured toe in a boot ... thanks for all your hard work, but we need another WR on the field to lighten the load on the legs of elite. Please sign here.

Positive thoughts to the Bugel clan.

Posted by: dcsween | August 18, 2008 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Sadly don and obvi are both right. Left side is pass, right side is run blockers.

Hopefully we dont become predictable...

Also, is the draw play becoming our bread and butter?

JLa, how bout a breakdown of type of running plays we have seen this pre-season?

Posted by: Zebra | August 18, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

Best wishes to Buges!! Now, concerning Goode, will someone explain to me what turf toe is? Pls don't tell me it's when grass grows out of your toe. Got to go, back later

"brown, I'm not hating on Rock. I'm just not understanding the "Rock love". Most of the dudes that play on special teams are backups. I'm just not getting the "Hell no, Rock don't go" arguments up here.

Dude is a career backup. If he hasn't seen some serious PT thus far, chances are he never will.

"The Truth" in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on, please can the Gibbisms with the "Core Redskin" or "Real Redskin" talk. A real redskin is one who performs on the field. End of story.

As far as people screaming about Betts' 1K in 06', please enough already. As one "reg" would say (who also is anti-Mason, you know who you are) that was TWO years ago. Betts is sniffing 30 and Cartwright is a stand-out SPECIAL TEAMER and CAREER back-up.

Give a guy who's younger a REAL chance to show what he can do. Its funny how some of you to be hating on the guy, when most in the know say dudes either "off the bubble", "the reason they will carry 4 RBs", or rasing the question of who's expendable, Rock or Betts.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 18, 2008 12:41 PM "

I've never been flattered more than when I was just told I used a Gibbism.

And for the record, I want all four to stay. I'm mad at the people who want Rock and/or Ladell gone. That's ridiculous.

People act like they're the only ones that can see talent. If Mason was as good as half of yall think, he'd be 2nd string already and this wouldn't be an issue.

Maybe we could trade Portis for a 3rd rounder and start Mason/Betts? /sarcasm

Also a quick note that the Bulldogs season starts in about 11 days, 22 hours, and 52 minutes in Stanford Stadium aka Between the Hedges in beautiful Athens, Georgia against the Georgia Southern University Eagles.

My $.02. I want to see how JC responds in the game next week. Zorn sounded pretty blunt in his assessments. If he responds well I think that may say volumes about Zorn’s coaching ability.

I just replied to your email to the league account, but not on the league page... I wont be in town for the draft... is there an auto-draft function?

This week's game will answer a lot of questions, with the starters playing a significant length of time.
Oh, and beepbeep.

So we have seen just about what our starting O would do over the course of 2/3 of a game. They have played for by my math 20:09 minutes. All and all Campbell has 160 yards by this point thats not too bad is it?

BREAKING NEWS FROM REDSKINS PARK;

Right before practice started Clinton Portis has been caught physically assualting Washington Post's Jason LaCanfora in a remote area of Redskins Park. Redskin Park security arrived before LaCanfora could be severely injured as he has been taken away with only a few minor bruises on his face and a pair of broken Versace glasses. According to Park security the only witnesses to the one-sided tussle were Team Owner Daniel Snyder and his hair dresser Vinny Cerrato who both declined to comment on this untimely incident. At this time the whereabouts of Clinton Portis are unknown.

Replace Portis with Betts? Are you guys nuts? Have you ever seen Betts pass block. He is just atrocious. CP, on the other hand, will bring the lumber.

Is this a joke? Skins rushing YPG rank: 2008 (preseason), 4th; 2007, 12th; 2006, 4th; 2005, 7th.

Anyone else notice that Jon Jansen has been struggling in pass protection so far?? His position has been one I have been keying on to so how he's been doing and I have been disappointed so far. I know its been a long time since he played, but I wonder if he has slipped or is it just rust? At least Buges is back to get him in shape.
