Report: Joey Galloway signed by Redskins

Updated at 9:54 p.m.:

The Redskins have agreed to terms with veteran wide receiver Joey Galloway, according to a league source.

Galloway, 38, is a 15-year veteran who would provide leadership for a mostly young receiving corps if he makes the roster. He signed a one-year deal with the team, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Galloway began last season with New England but played in only three games and was released in October. Pittsburgh picked him up late in December but he didn't appear in any games for the Steelers.

Galloway, who is joining his sixth NFL team, was with the Buccaneers when Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen was running Tampa Bay's front office.

He is a four-time Pro Bowl alternate and has tallied six seasons of 1,000-plus yards, though none since 2007. That year also marked the last season Galloway was a regular starter in the league.

The Redskins now have 10 wideouts under contract for next season. Last year, Antwaan Randle El was used as the team's the Redskins' third wide receiver, usually lining up out of the slot. Since his release, they've yet to sign a wideout that automatically replaces Randle El in the rotation, though Galloway could be an option.

The team's other wide receivers include Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, Marko Mitchell, Anthony Armstronng, Marques Hagans, James Robinson and Roydell Williams. They also drafted UCLA's Terrence Austin laast weekend.

They did show Bruce Allen on his cell phone in the front row at the Verizon Center. Possibly had something to do with this signing.

All other things being equal, the Caps needed a trustworthy net minder this series, and didn't have one.

Bring back Olaf Kolzig.

until then, fire the manager.

and I think Crosby wins the debate as to who the more valuable player is to their respective teams.

Ouch...

Another old veteran body coming in. Good, bad, or otherwise, everyone is on notice, jobs are up for grabs in the Shannihan/Allen era.
Glad to see more competition, even if this is just roster fodder for the grueling two-a-days this summer. You need the bodies to make it through August. Keep bringing them in, old, young, preferably good, the more competition the merrier...
BTW First, not that I care.

I dont know if Shanahan or Allen watch Galloway for the Pats in the first few games last year, but I sure did and that guy is done, Brady tried to throw him the ball a few times and he either gave up on passes or just plain dropped them and then Brady just gave up on him.

This is a stupid move.

Does Shanahan think that we have gone back in time or something, Larry Johnson now Galloway even Willie Parker, does he not realise that human beings and particuarly athletes do this thing called AGING!!

Same old Caps find a way to get in the record books by losing. This team has no heart two straight years you loose a game 7 on home ice. Replay of the Olympics Canadiens beat the Russians again!!!

"The Washington Redskins reached an agreement with wide receiver Joey Galloway on a one-year contract that will give the 37-year-old wide receiver a chance to play his 16th NFL season, according to a league source."

Next we'll read that wide receiver coach Kenan McCardell is suiting up.

Galloway is the kind of crafty receiver who'll make McNabb's job easy--I expect him playing next Fall for us.

But, in all seriousness, is this a comment about the Class of '08 or what?

Increasingly, it seems like Kelly, Thomas, and Mitchell might not be all that.

You'd think they'd inspire enough confidence to where the FO could say, "Three young wideouts, Moss, Cooley, Davis--that's enough."

Are they?

I wonder.

We draft Austin, then bring in a 37 year old dude.

And if they aren't our 2008 draft has to be one of the worst in league history.

Kenen, get your hands ready.

You might be the first player coach in redskin's history.

I recall vividly Joey Galloway talking some serious "smack" of how Ohio State was going to kick some Florida Gator's rear.

I think it was 34-14 by the half, Florida Gators!!
Perhaps it was the beginning of the end for Galloway. The former Buckeye hasn't done anything since.

Why are sopme of you people freaking out? Isn't it obvious what's going on around here? All these veteran signings to 1 or 2 year deals shows one thing: we're clearing cap space and stupid contracts for when this CBA thing gets worked out. These are stop gap measures designed to bring veteran leadership in for the young guys on the roster until the majority of the team is young. We're dealing with the failings of the past regime and the lack of draft picks while filing out a roster. They say the future is now but I think this is just biding time until the roster is completely turned over.

I strongly disagree. The only young talent available cost draft picks because they are RFA or UFA cost way too much. This is just waiting out the CBA conundrum while puting some veterans in place to teach for a year or two.

Another body for camp used for comparisons.

Keenan to his young receivers..."now, you see Galloway over there? That's a perfect example of what's going to happen to your bodies before you know it. It's sad, isn't it? His mind is there, but his body just can't keep up. So, let that be a motivator to you...get yourself in gear now before it's too late like Galloway there."

Maybe that'll scare the youngins into producing.

99% sure he'll be Joey Goaway before the start of the season.

unbelievable.. I saw him, too ,up here in NE with the Pats..and he was terrible.

I think Allen must of owed him some money from their Tampa days, and this is payback. Hopefully, he is gone before camp is completed. Shame to take a slot, from a younger prospect, though.

Galloway, Westbrook, Stokes, all drafted in the 1995 first round (15 years ago!), none really amounted to much in the NFL. Not sure what they are thinking, but he likely won't make the cut anyway, so nothing to lose.

Shanny obviously wants experienced vets on his team, including those that are essentially washed up. It remains to be seen, however, if the young guys - Kelly, Thomas, Mitchell to name a few can step up and provide the production needed to be a winner.

If Galloway steps in and outproduces the previously mentioned WR's, we're in trouble.

And Galloway still runs a 4.0 in the 40. Just like "D-Mo" does.

Tool.

WTF is going on with the Redskins? You've GOT to be kidding. Joey Galloway? He's actually older than McCardell, right?

What is the point? Waste of space. Another uniform to wash between practices. Waste of time. BOOOOOOOOOO!!

And get rid of Wrecks Grossman before he has to take the field. I'd rather watch a rookie with potential develop than watch Wrecks Nessman add to his Blooper Reel. I'd honestly rather them bring Danny Wuerffel back. Or Patrick Ramsey.

I miss JC17 already, just THINKING about Wrecks angling toward the sideline to stop one of his INTs from scoring. He's not a very good tackler, either. Which is strange. You'd think with his INT record it would be something he'd have worked on.

Maybe he and Galloway will be on the practice squad. Let's hope that's it.

The youngsters gotta have veteran influence. Someone to look up to. Someone to learn from. Soak up their good habits and discard the bad habits. Why not have some older guys to help groom them? Most of these older veteran players will prob be gone in preseason. Dont get your panties in a bunch.

It's the same thing every off-season. Some of our fans apparently just started following the NFL. It's amazing, really. It's like people never learn that a signing in the off-season doesn't mean the player will MAKE THE TEAM.

Or, they don't even look at the actual deal, and get on here and complain as if the Redskins just signed Galloway to a 5 year 90 million dollar contract, and not the one year vet minimum deal that they actually signed him to--the same one they would've given to any other warm body to serve as TC fodder and an extra set of hands during two-a-days.

Posted by: redskins459 | April 29, 2010 1:42 AM | Report abuse

They could not find a veteran who is at-least still capable to being somewhat productive? This is just stupid. It's like Bruce Allen is using his father's playbook and trying to recreate the Over the Hill Gang... except unlike his father, these guys are REALLY over the hill... Need depth at running back? Ok, lets sign two 30 yr olds on the downside of their careers instead of finding a young guy to groom to be Portis's eventual replacement.. Need a veteran receiver to mentor the young guys... lets sign a 38yr old who has seen action in only 4 games the past 2 years. I will not knock the McNabb thing, yeah, he is getting up there, but at-least (we hope) he can still play.

If he couldn't get on the field with other teams, we shouldn't have considered him. Moss is our vetran who should be teaching the young'ns. We could use someone who is a legitimate #3 WR who can actually compete for playing time. NOT Owens, someone who is younger and has room to improve.

Whateves...dude probably doesn't make the final roster anyway.

For a one year vet minimum deal, he's an additional WR coach for Keenan McCardell to use in getting our young guys ready.

Smart move.

Gosh we all just can't enough of kind of ?Campbell sux" style humor permeating the board of late.

And if I interrupt the neveending merriment to read an objective account of the trade, inevitably they say campbell is a big upgrade for Oakland,

38 yr. old wide receiver? Obviously brought in to mentor the young wide receivers.. god almighty..why don't they just bring in Bart Starr to mentor Brennan and the other goofball we just signed. Maybe Cerrato is still in the building. This is some of the dumbest stuff the Redskins organization has ever done. Larry Johnson..Willie Parker..Joey Galloway..Hell bring T.O. in..Maybe George Allen is back

Just to play devil's advocate here, the Pats have almost routinely added a bunch of solid vets toward the end of their careers in the past and won SBs doing it. When you have quality leadership, you can sometimes get away with what they're doing. Not saying they'll have the same success as NE, but just sayin'...

I was a fan of the new regime but now its the same old thing, they are trying to buy a super bowl. Anyone who thinks jobs on the squad are up for grabs is fooling themselves. Galloway is 38???? NOw we will lose one of our young receivers for someone that maybe has 1 or two years left in him..

Calm down, guys. The Skins signed a 38-year-old broken-down wide receiver because he'll be a good influence on the younger players -- teaching them practice habits, how to watch film, etc. Because, you know, most NFL teams give up a roster space to a glorified babysitter to do the job a COACH is supposed to do.

Not to mention knowing what plays are coming. Good morning brownwood.

Like the little te-da-te yesterday afternoon about the FS position?. My advocacy with TERRELL WHITEHEAD has to do with finding young players in positions of need of course. Not being an advocate for that particular individual. He'll be a bust or an All-Pro or something in between. But he has some ability, and he's a post-draft player in a position of need on this team. I'm just frustrated by the REDSKINS lack of interest in players from local schools other than MD. or VA. TECH. Not to mention folks who continually post here looking at the trees (individuals) rather than the forest (team).

Posted by: glawrence007 | April 29, 2010 8:07 AM | Report abuse

I think the signing is great. Need someone on the roster that the young ones can learn from. How to actually run a route instead of go here, now go over there, okay where's the ball. Well I guess this play is over now what do I do? Galloway can show them how to run the route, and what to do when it breaks down, something that has sorely been missing. Cooley is the only receiver on the roster that currently seems to be able to do that, which is why he catches so many balls and is the clutch receiver. I doubt Galloway will make the final roster, but will be a nice addition pushing the others the details of their jobs. Any Wide Receiver that can still play a little at 37 is around due to their knowledge of the game and all those little things that separate the 3 year wonders, from the Hall of Famers.

Posted by: edwardwilsonjr | April 29, 2010 8:20 AM | Report abuse

I'm all for signing veterans. However, a good rule of thumb should be that if the veteran goes to new england and belichick can't use him...then he's not good enough and may be too old. If Galloway had anything left in the tank, belichick would've kept him around.

Jesus you fans on here really don't have lives. Do you just have such horrible lives that you need something to b*tch about so you come here and comment on NORMAL, TEAM BUILDING, OFF SEASON moves. Some of the things y'all call people you don't even know or would say to them face to face. (BLOGGING COURAGE). Really try decaff or something. This is NOT the final Roster, it's good sound management turning over every stone to improve a team that's been lost for a long time. This team and new front office needs "a mustard seed of faith" from it's fans not knee jerk reactions for every single move they make. Your not going to get a championship team in one year after years of mismanagement by just drafting 6 guys and a few FA signings. Let try breathing slowly and trusting the NEW FO for more than a couple of months.

(and the smart a$$ comments begin in 3..2..and here we go.....)

This team was 4 - 12 last year.... EVERY position needs an upgrade !! Shanahan inherited a mess.... He's got to clean house..... There are STILL a bunch of butt-heads on the team but he cant get rid of them (Haynesworth, Portis) UNTIL he finds their replacement. Hell, sign Jerry Rice and Irvin !!

Some of these posts are crazy! After having Cerrato for what seems like forever and Zorn for the last two years you would think we could at least wait until when they started playing actual football before people freaked out. The Redskins, since Snyder bought the team, have overpaid for players and undervalued draft picks. With the only picks Allen/Shanny traded we got McNabb who is probably the best QB in the division. They are addressing both our lines which have always been neglected. These free agent deals are 1 or 2 year min salary incentive deals. If they don't work out they don't get paid. Take the running backs everyone is complaining about. Why not bring in Parker and Johnson. The odds are one will suck. But if you have both one (Probably Parker) might pan out and then you just cut the other prior to season when salaries are guaranteed. I don't know how this season is going to turn out but I know my Redskins have been a joke the last few years and atleast now it seems to be back to a real professional team.

They also signed Brandon Lloyd and T.O. so they can show our young receivers what not to do and to amuse the coaches as they jaw at each other about how much greater they are than each other (or anyone else for that matter). Expect daily fights to break out between the two during training camp.

T.O. will finally get cut and return home to do sit-ups in his drive way in the hope sport reporters will visit and allow him to jaw about how much greater he is than anyone. Lloyd will get cut after he fails to catch the first 78 passes thrown to him.

Billy Kilmer was signed to provide competition at the QB position. Joe Thiesman hailed the decision. Sonny found out about it and threw potato salad at him the momment he saw him.

They dug up George Allen to run the Anti-Dallas spy campaign. George was seen stalking Jessica Simpson because he didn't know she and Romo already broke up (something she said was due to a "smaller" reality than she was led to believe).

JaMarcus Russell is now the team's nutritionist. He has already installed candy machines in all the meeting rooms and added donuts and deep fried butter sticks to the lunch menu.

Vinny Cerato was re-hired to help dismantle a now competent front office by offering his pathetic excuse for advice. He is also in charge of getting Snyder's lunch from the kitchen. JaMarcus Russell is, of course, selecting what he eats in hopes of Snyder geting too fat so he can score on his pretty, hot wife (if he can find enough energy).

Even if JaMarcus doesn't succeed he is hoping to be selected as the team's water boy. He was going to try out for the position but decided against it when he saw how far away it was across the playing field to the water cooler.

Greetings from Montreal boys and girls.....

Hey, you know what? Bring in the competition even if it's old dudes. May the best players win. If the Young'uns can't beat the old timers, then so be it. Clean house. Get rid of slackers, hanger-ons and wanna-bees. Build character (that's why there is no TO). Build a sense of team and camaraderie. Just ask the Caps how that worked out for them. No sense of team or structure. Just a bunch of stars playing individually (see Skins 2000). That's why the Habs beat them even after being down 3-1. Ovechcan't showering that kid in Montreal? Making comments about Halak being afraid? Theo making fun of Plekanec only to get beat by him in OT? NO CHARACTER!!!!!!! Just arrogance.
