JZ, Sir Mix-A-Lot and Rush Limbaugh

Since he opted not to go to Seattle, Dan Steinberg had a little time on his hands Sunday and you know what that means: more stuff for the Z Files. Today's installment features Sir Mix-a-Lot, Rush Limbaugh and shorts that only Chris Cooley could love.

Steinz also chronicles the return of Hip Hip Hooray as well as the Gibbsian "hard fought."

...

Zorn gave the players a Victory Monday, which means there won't be many of them at Redskins Park. We'll have some updates and Zorn will talk to the media around 12:30. Cindy Boren will chat at 11, Mike Wilbon at 1:15.

Good call p1, you'd hate for a guy to develop some rapport with JC, and actually turn into a viable weapon on offense.
When was the last game he got a penalty? What was it 5-6 weeks ago? None of this portion of your post makes sense.

Posted by: BeantownGreg | November 24, 2008 9:25 AM | Report abuse

Rapport is what practice is for. He's had 10 weeks to build "game-time" rapport w/ JC and the results are what exactly? Last week was the biggest game of his career with a whopping 3 catches for 14 yards, and he did fail to cover up Jansen at the line of scrimmage on a play resulting in illegal formation.

I'm all for giving Kelly a shot now that he's healthy, but Thomas has had plenty of opportunities and has failed to take steps forward. At this point we are applauding him if he runs the proper route and doesn't draw a penalty, and that's sad.

BTW, given that Thomas got NO snaps with the offense yesterday, the coaches would probably say that I'm making a bit more "sense" than you at this point.

Also a great story from Florida State if you haven't read it or heard about it yet. Mryon Rolle putting the student back in student athlete, missing the first half of the Maryland game because he was interviewing for the Rhodes Scholarship :

BTW, similar to the Arizona, NO, and Dallas games earlier this year, this game was won because Zorn did NOT rely on Portis to set the tone (you read that right). The tone was set through the passing game early on, and even though the passing game wasn't super-effective, Zorn never abandoned the deep threats. Portis' game was wide open late in the second half as a result.

4th quarter: 15 rushes, 5 passes. That's how the Redskins win. Open it up early, pound them late. The "midwest coast" offense is not as simple as looking at the run/pass ratio. It's when the running game is effective and used, and when the passing game is effective and used that are the keys to this offense.

p1, so based on your logic, what has kelly done to deserve pt, because Thomas has been playing on Teams all year long. The penalty was, as has been previously discussed not Thomas's fault, but keep believing what you need to.

Again, using your logic, this was the biggest game of Kelly's career, and he had 2 catches for 12 yards so your logic makes no sense.

My point is that the offense needs to throw them the ball PERIOD. Thomas isn't running the wrong routes, thats never been stated by the coach. They need to get the ball to the rooks to take the pressure off of Cooley/Moss.

Posted by: BeantownGreg | November 24, 2008 9:51 AM | Report abuse

I like the name Chesapeake Coast Offense over Midwest-coast.

I do think next season the passing game will be better if they keep this system. We may be in need of a WR coach to help Zorn get this game-plan across to that group.

Posted by: alex35332 | November 24, 2008 9:52 AM | Report abuse

One thing I noticed about Kelly, which is common for all rookies I am told is how soon he turns to look for the ball.

RAVENS-REDSKINS MOVED TO PRIME TIME
Posted by Michael David Smith on November 24, 2008, 9:46 a.m.
A league source tells PFT that the December 7 game between the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens has been moved to the prime time slot on NBC.

The tentative schedule released by the NFL had the Patriots at the Seahawks in the prime time Week 14 slot, but that’s a relatively unattractive game, so the NFL is taking advantage of the flexible schedule to put a better game in prime time. Patriots-Seahawks will be played in the afternoon.

The league uses flexible scheduling on Sundays from Week 11 to Week 17 in an effort to ensure that the best games get the best time slots. The game at Baltimore will match two teams fighting for playoff spots.

The other big Week 14 game is Cowboys at Steelers, which will be on Fox at 4:15 p.m. Eastern.

Anybody else notice our kicker can't get a 40 yard field goal there anymore and his kickoffs are coming down around the 15 all of a sudden with one getting to the 24? what's the deal?

Posted by: zjfr2 | November 24, 2008 9:55 AM | Report abuse

Seems to me that the coaches and other players were always more impressed with Kelly in practice than Thomas. Although I have to say, Thomas has been the man on Teams. he always seems to be in on the tackles.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Posted by: Original_etrod | November 24, 2008 9:57 AM | Report abuse

Bean,

I'm not talking about the 12-man huddle. The illegal formation penalty that got called on Jansen later in the game WAS Thomas's fault. He was not up to the line of scrimmage to cover Jansen.

Kelly got 2 catches for 12 yards in his FIRST full game action.

Last week Thomas got 3 catched for 14 yards in his TENTH game.

There is a logical difference.

Especially when the reports from Redskins Park seem to be that Kelly "gets it", but just can't stay healthy, whereas Thomas does not.

Posted by: p1funk | November 24, 2008 10:00 AM | Report abuse

Greg, I think it says something when it takes Kelly 2 weeks of practice to completely overtake Thomas on the depth chart, when Thomas has had the entire season's worth of time to prove himself. For this year at least, it looks like Thomas will be nothing more than a depth guy. Kelly makes the impression that he'll be a player. That's just the impression I get.

rc, the pats/phins game was entertaining, so you've got that going for you. I was really pulling for your guys, Joey Porter was no where all game long. I was somewhat impressed however, the phins have made a big turn around from last year, you guys have a good future.

Posted by: BeantownGreg | November 24, 2008 9:22 AM | Report abuse

Entertaining, schmentertaining. I'm not worried that we lost so much as HOW. And Porter was always going to disappear in one game this year, why did it have to be this one?

Anyway, I'm not happy with improvement - you hear me?? We should be 10-1 and already in the playoffs!! :)

This week might be a little ugly for you guys, the Giants do look a lot like men against boys in their games lately, but if you can get through it healthy and competitive, you'll probably only have Balmer to worry about the rest of the way.

Any chance tat Portis is active but sits for most of the game this week? If he's active the Gints have to game plan for him, but maybe Zorn rests him up because he will need to be studly against the Ravens.

I'm actually optimistic about Kelly, didn't flash or anything but a multi-catch game and now stupid penalties or formation lineups (meaning he's miles ahead of Thomas already), I think if he stays healthy he's the starter with moss by after the Giants game and ARE returns to the slot where he belongs.

Hey Jack. I did notice that. He doesn't give your coverage guys much chance, and if he keeps it up sooner or later it has to cost you a TD.

I don't think it's a strength issue with Suisham. I think he doesn't trust himself. He doesn't "let it rip" for fear of losing accuracy. I think the snap was low too, and it messed up his timing. Either way, he's just got to get fearless out there and just crank the ball.

Could be right but it doesn't explain the kickoffs psps.

Posted by: Redcoat | November 24, 2008 10:15 AM | Report abuse

The real short, high looping kickoffs are a strategy. He's done them a couple times during the year, and he did the same thing last year during the playoff game (remember the onside recovery from Mix?). It's just to throw the other team off, kind of like an alternative to the squib. I'm not a fan of them, but I do think they're done on purpose.

Posted by: psps23 | November 24, 2008 10:20 AM | Report abuse

Yes the kickoff distance is very concerning, Shizam has always been a little iffy on anything further then 40 yeards but he has always had great kickoff distance, it has been steadily declining for a month now and that just kills when they have to do noithing but run 5 yards and get tackled and they start on the 30+. Maybe we draft a kicker this year?

UGA does "directional kicking", which means they want to kick it really high and have it land at about the 15 yard line just in time for our guys to make a quick tackle at or before the 20.

Is this like what yall are talking about with Suisham?

If so, I hate it.

Posted by: TheTruth11 | November 24, 2008 10:30 AM | Report abuse

Skins have to learn to score more than 20 points in a game. To hold runners under 10 yards/carry. To stretch the field. Get some YAC and blow people out. Then we can worry about the rest.

brown;

I didnt know they posted their games so early prior to the season.

the guy who runs 506 does his updates for the week every thursday. I assumed he looks at the local airing schedule.

I can do it without the local air cast by using hte principles the NFL uses. Pitt was on thursday, ravens and eagles played in the early game, so we shouldnt have had any issues.

I honestly don't know if anyone is good at it, never seen it done successfully. Pisses us off all the time though, cause its either going out of bounds or the returner gets to the 30.

It's 12 now that the Ravens game has been moved to prime time. But it is something that bears watching throughout the season because the Skins-Saints game wasn't supposed to be on in our area but it ended up being on regular TV for some reason. So unless we get screwed by flex scheduling, we should be able to get the rest of the Skins games on TV.
