Zorn Gives Injury Update

Shawn Springs (calf), Jason Taylor (calf), Stephon Heyer (shoulder), Cornelius Griffin (shoulder), Reed Doughty (back) and Marcus Washington (hamstring) all missed practice with injuries, as we reported earlier. Veteran offensive lineman Pete Kendall was given a day of rest but will definitely play Sunday, according to Coach Jim Zorn.

"He's one of those old warriors," Zorn said of Kendall. "He'll be fine. We just gave him a rest."

Zorn does not have specific timetables yet on the others. Springs is expected to practice Thursday, and Zorn "hopes" Taylor can do the same, but then again he also admits he was optimistic that Taylor could have practiced today. Zorn said that if Taylor is able to practice Thursday and Friday, he would definitely face the Rams, with his two-week absence not a concern.

"He would be up and we would use him as much as he could go," Zorn said of the defensive end, noting the strong rotation of defensive linemen this season and the ability to spell players for a series or two if necessary. Griffin had an MRI Monday and will be watched closely throughout the week.

Zorn said he has not lost hope that Heyer could practice this week and possibly give him a decision to make at starting tackle.

Doughty was not on the field for practice and is dealing with a "banged-up nerve in his back."

The Redskins also suffered an injury in practice, with practice squad linebacker Johnny Baldwin carted off with a knee injury, Zorn said.

...

Zorn congratulated Clinton Portis on being named NFC offensive player of the week, but also made sure to keep it in perspective. "It's noteworthy, no question about it," Zorn said, "because in this league it's hard to run against any defense." ... Quarterback Jason Campbell and corner Carlos Rogers, Auburn teammates who are both enjoying breakthrough seasons, were the last players off the field after practice, running laps together well after everyone else had headed to the showers.

...

Randoms: Turns out Seattle is missing Zorn a bit. ... CBS broadcaster James Brown will be chatting at 11 a.m. tomorrow; Jason La Canfora's chat will begin at 1.

Posted by: RedDMV | October 8, 2008 3:53 PM | Report abuse

Concerned about Springs and Griffin. When those guys play well, they can change a game. Obviously the Rams aren't the most formidable team around, but a healthy Springs and Griffin are key to this team's overall success.

We've seen that we can do well without Marcus, Stephon, Taylor and Doughty on the field.

I'm with you Jason in trying to pick out the strengths of a weak team, but seriously their punting rank is at least partly a reflection of a stagnating offense. It's easier to punt 50 yards when you're punting from your own 20.

dealer, no joke. "Maverick" was our drinking word. I had a party of about 20 or so people at my place and we were completely hammered about 45 minutes in. And then Biden had this sequence where he had something like 8 "mavericks" and we had to appeal to the judge (my dog), who barked his ruling that, yes, Biden counted, too. At that point, we were beyond hope. I had run out of elitist wine, and had to switch it up to vodka and Campari.

I was at a wedding Saturday night and was ungodly hungover Sunday morning when I watched Tina Fey on TiVo. I darn near fell out of my chair. Brilliant stuff.

I posted this earlier in the week, and I still think the way Blache et al will attack is to Double Holt w/ Carlos and LL over the top, and not allow Jackson to get untracked. Make the lesser receivers and the TE beat us if they can. I don't think they can. Horton and or Rocky Mac can cover any of their journeymen TEs. On offense, I look for heavy heavy doses of CP and LB and I hope to see Collins handing off to Rock midway through the 4th. I also think Zorn will try to make sure that Tana gets some balls this week and a touchdown if possible. Of course, it will depend on Rams not taking away Tana like the eagles did. I'm just saying that Zorn will try to get him some plays since he was catchless in Philly. I would really really really like to see Redskins finally finishing drives with TDs vice FG's. Good news Suisham is 7/7 last two games. Bad news: Suisham is 7/7 last two games instead of 2/3 or 3/3. THe socreboard has not YET reflected the dominance the Redskins have been exerting agasint thier opponents especially the last two weeks. I assume that heavy, heavy, heavy emphasis will be placed on finishing drives this week.

Think that Springs and Taylor should not play if they are not at least 90%. I know we must take the Rams seriously but we need to take our best DB and top rush end's health even more seriously. We beat Philly on the road without them; we should be able to take STL without them. That said, I am definitely nervous about this game. Glad to hear the team does not seem to be letting up. I agree with Beantown Greg- it is nice to read that your franchise player is running laps after practice with 'Los.

To make sense of this you have to understand the world that Truth inhabits. It revolves around World of Warcraft and the "University" of Georgia. You're not a success because you didn't go to "U"GA and you don't even have season tickets to their games. And you're not interesting because you don't post about your WOW guild.

Any chance we hold out some of these "questionables" simply because we aren't exactly playing the 1967 Packers this week?

LMG, I'm pretty sure one of the blog peeps lives in greater Cincinnati, though I can't for the life of me remember who... I have this pesky doggone distraction, by which I mean "w**k", and can't keep my blog facts straight...

Nate, Chia, Willie- If any of you live in "A home perched on a hillside above a busy southwest Portland thoroughfare", um, oops.

"... I forgot that Rogers and Campbell were teammates. You don't hear the two of 'em share a lot of stories about when they were there. ..."

Posted by: RedDMV | October 8, 2008 3:53 PM

That's because the stories you hear about are their teammates ... Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams.

From the "we hardly knew ye" department ...

"The Redskins also suffered an injury in practice, with practice squad linebacker Johnny Baldwin carted off with a knee injury, Zorn said."

[to the tune of "Jimmy Cracked Corn"]
Johnny cracked knee,
And gets replaced,
Johnny cracked knee,
And gets replaced,
Johnny cracked knee,
And gets replaced,
Cause its only practice squad.

From the local Vikings paper:

Vikings working out punters

Vikings coach Brad Childress followed through on his harsh words for punter Chris Kluwe today, working out four punters after practice.

Asked on Monday night if Kluwe wasn't able to direct his punts out of bounds, Childress said, "You know what? if he can't do that, I'll find someone that can kick the ball out of bounds."

After practice officially ended, two punters were assigned to each practice field, as special teams coordinator Paul Ferraro and Viking scouts, including player personnel vice president Rick Spielman, looked on.

This may be a message for Kluwe more than anything.

Last October, he signed a six-year contract extension with the Vikings.

http://blogs.twincities.com/Vikings/2008/10/vikings_working_out_punters.html

They don't say who these four punters are, but I'm guessing they are the same four guys who get flown around from city to city during the season to put a flame under the butt of the incumbent punter (who then dramatically improves).

Still, signing a punter to a six-year contract? That's gonna leave a mark.

Am I the only one who thinks that the Philly organization is disfunctional? The head coach seems way overrated, overstuffed, and has serious family issues. The drafting has been terrible. The QB has lost it. Johnson has this reputation as a defensive genius but they're getting big points put up against them. What's the deal?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | October 8, 2008 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Mcnabb is the head disfunctionary.

++++What about the 4 quality starting RB's??? These are 4 good one in the NFC East...

S.E. Jerome
Westbrook
Jacobs
Marion "the Barbarian" Barber
Rank these guys to start your team ...today.

Posted by: cej75024 | October 8, 2008 2:34 PM++++

And WHY are there 4 quality starting RBs?

It’s the line(s), stupid.

Don't mean that personally, just a play on an old cliche. It's true though. Adrian peterson didn't do squat Monday because the blocking sucked, espcially on the left side.

Why, with two all pros? Because McKinnon hadn't playd alls ason due to suspension and they weren't in synch.

Skin s line, especially in in synch now. Which is why i believe jansen should remains at ORT.

sween,

Green Bay had four up to rattle Frost the day before: Scott Player, Ken DeBauche, Waylon Prather and Zac Atterberry. Those names might mean something to Frost, but I'm not sure why.

Kaneohe, enjoying your work up here, but please, please, I beg you, refrain from using the term "untracked" when you mean "on track," as above at 4:41pm.

Sorry, really truly sorry about the nitpicking, but that right there is one of my sports media malapropism pet peeves.

The Redskins owe a debt of gratitude to Manny Ramirez. He's on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

I have a feeling, the Redskins might have been had Manny not been Manny.

MacDonald's "ad" in there about Cooley's blog, worth peeking at.

I'm going to be in Phoenix (North Tempe, actually) for the Browns game. Where should I drag my friend so I can watch the game and she can drink?

Rgr Nate. Here's hoping 90k become gleefully unhinged in the face of S Jackson failing to get on track.

In a bit of irony, my Eagle fan buddy in my fantasy league has S Jackson playing on his roster.

man, when Nate is calling people out for poor diction, it is a testy day in Skinsville!

I always thought "untracked" seemed like a misnomer...so all these announcers are butchering the English lang? learning....

as good as marcus is i feel it is time for the skins to let him go. he has not been able to play much in the last few years. they could make him a backup and offer him less money. sorry but he is done.
