Keiland Williams again team's featured back

By Rick Maese

For the second game in a row, injuries forced rookie Keiland Williams to assume the role of the Redskins' featured running back. For the second week in a row, Williams seemed to answer the call.

With 30 touches, Williams had his name called more than any other player in Sunday's game. He had 68 rushing yards on 23 carries and 27 receiving yards on six catches. Quarterback Donovan McNabb targeted him eight times, more than anyone other than Chris Cooley and Santana Moss, who were both targeted nine times.

It's surprising production for a guy who wasn't even his team's featured back in college. At LSU, Williams started only three of 47 games.

Williams, speaking like a veteran back Sunday, credited the patchwork offensive line in front of him.

"I definitely feel like I should've been more productive on my end considering what they did," he said. "There was just a lot of yardage left out there. Like I said, they did a great job. I definitely feel like I should've been over 100 tonight."

Williams entered the game as the team's third-down running back. But by halftime, he was the team's only real option. Ryan Torain and his sore hamstring didn't even make the trip, Chad Simpson hurt his foot during pregame warm-ups and Clinton Portis aggravated his groin injury early in the game. That's a full load for any player to carry.

"There is no breather. You can't get tired. You can't tap your helmet and get spelled," said Portis. "I think that is two great weeks for him. It should build a lot of confidence."

For the second week in a row, fullback Darrel Young was used as the team's emergency back-up tailback. He had three rushing yards on three carries against the Titans. But it was Williams who was on the field for most of the team's offensive plays.

"When you have running backs that go down, you ask Keiland to take the load and continue to run with it," McNabb said. "Neither did he get tired or ask questions. He knew what he was supposed to do. He did a great job for us running the ball, as well as catching the ball out of the backfield."

Kieland rocks, the coaching staff deserves kudos for manning the ship through treacherous waters..

They did pretty good. Heyer was getting moved back a lot in OT. Surprising a guy that big has soooo much trouble holding his ground. Still he looked better at Guard than he ever has a RT.

Posted by: edvar |

Yeah, a great job by a replacement crew O-Line...But , still plenty of room for improvement, Cooley dropped too many passes (but made some great ones), the Skins still relied on Titans f***ups (the personal fouls to Lichtensteiger(great game!) and McNabb) to bail them out...We are looking more modern (and Belichick) in our offense, utilizing the tight ends and the screens more effectively than previously ...Definite improvement..

KW was a blue chip recruit that underachieved at LSU. He's a load that MS may ask to lose a few LBs (230) to hopefully pick up a little quickness.

I like this kid.

So? Meteor? or the Ginas?

Gotta be the Ginas, Scamp, although a sequel to the earlier Manning poutfest would also be entertaining.

Time to quit wasting time with Simpson and bring up Davis now. Same with Austin, for every one positive play Galloway makes he makes at least four that make you tear your hair out. Based on how Montgomery did today, I would keep him there. If Rabach is unhappy about that, then he will know how many of us have felt about watching his performance in the first 9 games.

Much as I'd like to see the Eagles lose tonight as retribution for last Monday, it's probably better for the Skins if they win. If NY loses, they're only a game ahead of us, and we've still got them twice.

Yeah, I'm still thinking about playoff possibilities despite our injuries and many weaknesses. Because otherwise, what the heck are we doing here?

IF you think that there is a problem with Danny Smith this season, then you haven't been paying attention. The Redskins have been consistently good at both kickoff and punt coverage, as well as both kickoff and punt returns. Those are the areas where special teams coaching makes the real difference in performance, and we are excelling at all of them.

If you watched the replay of the TD punt return today, you might have noticed TWO blocks-in-the-back by the Titans that were not called by the refs.

2 sacks were on McNabb not getting out from C fast enough and getting his foot stepped on.

I've wondered about this for a while. Seems like the Skins get an awful lot of soft tissue non-contact injuries. I'm wondering if our training is up to snuff.

(This opens the door to all kinds of Haynesworth/McNabb conditioning jokes, but I shall abstain, choosing instead to revel in our victory)

I apologized for bringing up the FACT that you said that ST21 was at fault for being murdered by people breaking into his house. You then proceeded to make an ass of yourself yet again by sticking to your claim.

Today I rightly said your post that Shanahan "benched" Landry when he was injured was stupid.

Your other points directed at me?

92 is a quitter. He didn't get hit by friendly fire (91), hear a whistle, or have a charley horse. He quit.

McNabb has been terrible this season but the OL has been worse. It was a mistake to bench him, but with the way he was playing..Would it have mattered? We'll never know..

Injury reports are intentionally misleading but guys missing games from injuries is not an attempt to "obfuscate", "bench", or "send a message to the team".

You can't admit you're are wrong and then you resort to name calling. You are a "Doosh".

Quit bringing your weak ass ginger ale to a scotch party…son

I thought they moved Lichty over, no?

I wasn't saying he played ctr. I thot they moved him over. No? m'bad.

AND that brings me bak 2 Dewschel44.

I can admit when I'm wrong. I'm just not in the ST21 case. I'll stick by that always, 'cause I know what I'm talking about. You don't.

Thanks for staying on point, to some degree, this time.

But here's a novel idea, try just disagreeing with a point instead of going to extremes... You can disagree with me without calling the idea stupid... Of course, you don't want that. U just want to be an SJK. Trust me, you're succeeding.

It most certainly is NOT stupid to think that a coach who is trying to make statements w/ his player management, evident by the McLovin' benching, would do the same to a player who opened the floodgates to an HOF sjkwhoppin. Again, disgaree all you want - but stupid? You must be lookin back in the mirror of that mobile home you call a house.

I fully admit I could be wrong - it doesn't mean I am - and it certainly doesn't mean I'm stupid.

btw - that's not scotch. That's pi$$, and you've been driking it all nite.

Nope. Dock started at left guard and rabach at center. When Dock went down Will Montgomery went to LG. When Rabach went down Will moved to C and Heyer came in at LG. Confusing enough?

I believe Matt Moseley's article says that McNabb was hit a lot today. All that I can say about this team is even in a beat down last week, they NEVER quit. This team at least is a fighter. Even with subpar talent.

If by "extremes" you mean logic then you are finally right.

I called your post that Shanahan "benched" Landry was stupid. But now you still want to call the tragedy of ST21 being murdered while protecting his family his fault. UFB

Never called you a name. Now I will call you STUPID. I also have this for you………..

I'll say it again...F U C K you.

Oh - just caught that. lol.

Bro, you're just so wrong. Obviously it's the murderer's fault. I'm saying ST bears responsibility for not actually protecting his family and himself by leaving them in an unsafe environment. I'll always stick by that statement because it's correct.

I know your mind is too strainded to comprehend risk analysis, so I'll end there.

And your statement has the same effect. If you call what someone says stupid, expect them to react as if you called them stupid. There's not really much of a difference there.

and btw, my exes say that statment much better than you do - even if your tits are bigger.

Am I the only one that thinks these new helmets have contributed to more concussions this year? Seems like every week there are several players leaving the game from concussions.

It may be because players aren't hiding them anymore to get back on the field because the medical staffs are all over them.

The problem is that they've made these helmets so protective and rock solid that defenders have no fear leading with them.

I have no problem with the league enforcing the rules. The Defense just has to adapt and Jerome Harrison will have to retire.

That's an effing stupid rule. There is no difference from a logical standpoint between what Eli did and what a "QB slide" is in the rulebook. For all intents and purposes, he gave himself up to be considered down. The Eagles shouldn't be gifted for that BS.

That should have been a 15 yd penalty instead of a 40 yd gain.

On the one hand the rule is stupid. If the QB hits the turf he's giving himself up. On the other hand the QB shouldn't be so damn stupid that he can't obey the slide rule as it's written.

If you think the special teams have been great, you don't have a clue. Yes, for the most part KO and PR have been better. However KO coverage is average as is PR. Do not forget the 3 or 4 kickoffs that went out of bounds. Do not forget jumping offsides(Phillip Daniels) on a FG attempt and giving up 7 instead of 3. That mistake was a season changer! How about missed OT fg against Houston. Today they can not line up right and the rekick results in a, wait for it, wait for it..TOUCHDOWN. How about a snapper that has difficulty well snapping. Today he had a bad snap on a punt(22yd punt) and on the end of the half FG attempt. How about in the season opener when we screwed up the FG that would have put us up 16-7? I guess that doesnt count because they won.
Please stop saying its all the players because the coach is the one putting them in the position to fail. The special teams coach normally has final say on who is punter, snapper and kickers are. Ill give him a pass on Durant Brooks, he was forced on ol Danny. All im saying is when will this 1/3 of the game be addressed for all their mistakes.

Anybody else notice Vick do "his thing" in the game tonight? Because I did.

4th and 1, 4 and change minutes left, Vick was well into his shell. No more running. No more extending plays. Just drop back, get rid of the ball, self-preservation. Seen it since his Atlanta days.

The Eagles will NOT win it all with Vick. As long as they come up against a decent defense, as the Giants have, Vick will cower himself into a non-factor.

He's gifted athletically, no doubt. But, what good is it when he cares more about getting out of the game "healthy" than who wins or loses?

Even sorry ass Eli ran for a first down with the game on the line. Yeah, he fumbled at the end, but his heart was on display. He was trying to WIN it. Vick looked shocked when Reed sent him back in to go for it on 4th down. He was already coming off the field with his cowardly head down.

How many 4th quarter comebacks has Vick been a part of? I've seen him fold and seen him fold and seen him fold again.

A perfect Coward. He should have electrocuted himself for lack of fight, the piece of dung.

I look forward to the day, hopefully in this year's playoffs, when Eagles fans come back to earth on this psychopath. He's a loser for good reason.

Posted by: Thinker_ | November 22, 2010 2:02 AM | Report abuse

Wow Thinker...how do you REALLY feel?

The Eagles are going nowhere...someone will provide a tough matchup for him and he'll fold like a lawn chair. Plus that defense is sketchy at best.

Right now the class of the NFC is the Falcons. That team looks poised for a run. I hope they pull it off...Tony Gonzalez is due for a ring and Matty Ice is legit.

I'm just crossing my fingers on all these injuries we had yesterday. We have paper thin depth as it is...I'd hate to see us even thinner, especially on the line.

Heyer has the longest legs and shortest body I've ever seen on a linemen. He is just the wrong shape for a lineman, he cannot get low enough and his centre of gravity is always going to be higher than the defender.

When I saw him at guard I was certain, game over. If he can't anchor against ends, he has no chance againt tackles. So, color me stunned because he played like a serviceable guard. He wasn't good, but competent was a huge achievement under the circumstances.

I don't see how his body shape will allow him adapt to guard, but he played better there than I've ever seen him play at tackle.

Posted by: WeNeedLinemen | November 22, 2010 6:10 AM | Report abuse

Rabach has kept his job because of how important his line call are. I didn't notice a drop-off after he left. If anything the blitz pick-ups were a little better.

I think KWilliams could be a real good power runner. He doesn't need to lose weight (230 lbs) , 'cause Riggo came in around that weight (depending on whether or not he had been drinking the night before). His head seems to be on straight, has respectful comments after the game, doesn;t seem that 'into himself', and seems to be a 100% team player. I think next year, with Williams, Torain , JDavis and one more HR hitting RB, we should be okat at RBs -- as long as they can become good blockers.
