Malcolm Kelly excited, energized by arrival of Shanahan

Although not every player plans to attend the voluntary three-day minicamp that begins Friday at Redskins Park, third-year wide receiver Malcolm Kelly is eager to get started.

Frustrated in former coach Jim Zorn's version of the West Coast offense, Kelly has been energized by the arrival of Coach Mike Shanahan and Shanahan's staff. Kelly has studied hard during voluntary team workouts, and said he's ready to show what he has learned while working the last few weeks under Kyle Shanahan, Washington's offensive coordinator, and wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell.

"I'm real excited," Kelly said in a phone interview Thursday afternoon. "Everybody knows that we're kind of learning on the fly, but they're going to expect you to know at least Day 1 materials.

"It's a lot of studying going on, but it's good. Again, I'm excited. I'm going to line up in so many different positions, and be put in so many different situations, just over this one weekend."

The West Coast offense the Shanahans are installing "makes you become more of a complete receiver. Just in everything we're going to do in this offense, the way it puts pressure on the defense and takes advantage of matchups, it's going to be a whole lot different."

Not every player is going to atend the voluntary mini-camp?

Now, that's odd.

I guess like AH, some players have decided to exercise their contractual right to 'do' mandatory, and 'avoid' the voluntary.

It only goes to prove that all the threads and bloggas screaming about Prince Al somehow being selfish and not a team player was just that: whining in the dark.

Quit yer whining and leave Albert alone.

Moe,

By not every player he must have meant "every player except for Albert Haynesworth"

Your pensive, bleating explanations are only making it worse... buck up and rinse the sand out yer vag, bro.

Not sure why, but this is starting to get right up with the JC and AH posts..

Malcom Kelly needs to become a little more relevant, before I care weather or not he is "excited, energized"

Based on his recent commentary regarding overall team participation in off season workouts, that would also include J Campbell as well, and especially so with his having signed his offer.

So, let me see, two guys out of 60 plus players aren't going to be at a voluntary camp, and it was worthy of, what, 4-6 threads from our fearless leader?

Please.

Leave Albert be.

Here's a poll for you:

Which WR do you expect to have the biggest impact next season for Shanahan (outside of Santana Moss)?

-Devin Thomas
-Malcolm Kelly
-Marko Mitchell
-Another WR not currently on the roster

I'm going with the darkhorse, Marko Mitchell. Book it.

yep... Clausen's arm and motion have been compared to Cutler.. And he is from a pro set. And Bradford, wont be available.

(Vinny likes to say Clausen is a sleeper that he discovered)

Because as we all know, if other people are selfish, it excludes everyone and anyone from being called selfish.

AS far as AH is concerned, what do you expect for your $21,000,000 bonus?

Don't you know I don't do nose tackle, because I'm all about individual accomplishment, not making my team better. Vinny and Dan knew that, why don't you guys?

I'm going with Kelly and Thomas. They will become the next Fitzgerald/Boldin combination.

Santana will be a productive 3rd receiver and Mitchell will enjoy his view from the sidelines.

Last year AH played pretty well and made his teammates better.

But I guess we should all know that Cork doesn't do facts, because he's all about his personal backasswards opinions instead of actually making the blog discussion better. Jason LaCanfora knew that, why don't we?

This will only happen if we trade back to say #8 or so and then pick him, getting a 2nd round pick to go with it which we then trade for Geither.

I think it's more likely that we'll pick Okung or Trent Williams and then trade Haynesworth for a 2nd which we then spend on Tebow, McCoy, or maybe eve Clausen since he could fall that far.

I'm glad he's excited but honestly, I don't think he's going to be as incorporated into this offense as he thinks he is. Which kind of sucks because I like him, but we'll see. Just don't think he has the speed...he ran a 4.68 40

Posted by: Bigfoot_has_a_posse | April 15, 2010 4:42 PM | Report abuse

"...we need a 2nd rounder to get another good offensive lineman. We need to make a trade soon."

Excellent point.

But how do you acquire the pick?

You could trade away the 2011 1st rounder for a 2nd and 4th this year.

That's a 1st, 2nd, 2 4ths, a 5th, and a 7th.

It would let you take two linemen in rounds 1 and 2, an inside linebacker type in 4, and quarterback at 4, special teamers at picks 5 and 7.

Is it worth it in a deep draft like this to trade away your #1 for next year?

Maybe.

I say pull dat trigga.

the deep ball is very important to a shanny style offense. I like Mccoys grit and instincts but his arm will disqualify is eligibility. From my understanding better prospect @QB next year. I hope we don't go Clausen he reeks of good ole Ryan Leaf.

Well I think Thomas for sure. Kelly and Mitchell prob share opposite side while Moss takes the slot. Add Double TE (Cooley on the strong side) single back set and a hopefully a decent O line (draft Okung). I know we still have Sellers but on some 2nd and long or 3rd and long this should be pretty good. This is the best set for us in my opinion. What do you think?

Posted by: Skinz49 | April 15, 2010 5:10 PM | Report abuse

jerry rice had 4.6 forty speed.. so what? kelly is BIG and has good football speed and hands he will have a great impact in the passing game if they fix the o-line as a matter of fact they have more potential talent at WR-TE than any position on the team and more than philly,if you have a complete fool for a head coach(zorn/porn)he held these young receivers back with his stupidity and weakness. mitchell will also be in the mix.

agreed about Thomas, with the caveat that we only had limited looks at his potential last season (given Zorn play calling, JC playing style, etc). but he seemed to do what he could with the opportunities. Kelly and Mitchell are still big question marks to me.

given the trend toward picking up cheap/disposable veterans for depth and competition at other positions, I wouldn't be surprised if we see the same for WR. and that's not a bad idea.

the idea of a double tight-end set has been hashed around a lot here. but realistically... how often would we see that in any given game? and would it be a real difference maker?

Posted by: moodlymoodlymoo | April 15, 2010 5:27 PM | Report abuse

I read all these same articles/posts last year. Everyone praising that guy... 1 catch for 6 yards in the opener on the way to a breakout season of 25 catches for 347 (a third of which came in the last game). OK, now I'm pissed. Game log:

1 for 6
4 for 41
1 for 18
0 for 0
1 for 8
0 for 0
0 for 0
bye week
1 for 4
1 for 18
1 for 36
2 for 50
2 for 13
1 for 10
1 for 9
4 for 25
5 for 109

I'll believe it when I see it and I'm not planning on seeing it.

Who's Malcolm Kelly?

Posted by: 21stCenturyCaveman | April 15, 2010 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Who cares if he is excited his career reads: Came into the league out of shape, got injured and dropped passes. I would be excited to, if a coaching change allows him to blame Zorn for his being stupid and lazy go figure. No breaks for you Malcom you still have to catch the balls McNabb throws high and low. JC gets no breaks neither do you.

If given ample opportunities, Marko Mitchell will be a Touchdown Maker!!!

Posted by: laboyde | April 15, 2010 11:18 PM | Report abuse

Malcolm could make it as a possession receiver - picking up hard first downs with his size and hands.

But his inability to get away for the long score against Oakland worried me. Speed is an issue if you line him up to go long.

I'm rooting for him and Marko to make an impact though. With the TEs, Santana and Devin as first choices, I think Mitchell and Kelly have work to do to get involved.

Posted by: stevebeagrie | April 16, 2010 6:03 AM | Report abuse

LEAVE FAT ALBERT ALONE

Man, you get the guy because he is the most dominant D player in the league WHEN IN SHAPE (His personal trainer got him in that shape).

Now he commits to going to get back in that shape (Again his personal trainer got him in that shape) because he knew he was out of shape under ZORN.

All his teammates like him and said last year when he was on the field he was unstoppable.

SO WHY NOT KEEP HIM AND SEE WHAT YOU GET FOR THE MONEY!!

Posted by: COLUMBIASKINS | April 16, 2010 7:55 AM | Report abuse

OK, so we didn't get Marshall. Maybe that's because they believe they have Marshall like talent in Kelly.

Let's compare physical attributes:

Marshall-
Ht: 6' 4"
Wt: 230 lbs
40: 4.52 sec
Vert: 37 in
Bench: None recorded

Kelly-
Ht: 6' 4"
Wt: 240 lbs
40: 4.54 sec
Vert: 38 in
Bench: 300 lbs

From what I can see he has the physical tools to get the job done.

I've long contended that the Redskins problem over the last couple of years is that they drafted young talented players and didn't give them a chance to perform on the field. Maybe with the right coaching this guy could be just as effective as Marshall has been.

He'll definitely be on my sleeper list for fantasy football this year. Hopefully, he's in a position to challenge for the #1 spot.
