Kelly Not Ready for Sunday; Heyer May Start

Jim Zorn said that Malcolm Kelly is not ready to play Sunday, but hopes that Stephon Heyer can start at right tackle.

Heyer's left shoulder is still sore but he has regained his range of motion. Heyer could practice fully tomorrow, and Zorn said he would list him as questionable for now.
"If it's game time [until they decide whether Heyer can play], then it's game time," Zorn said.

Kelly's ankle has not healed and Zorn said he continutes to get intense treatment

...

Corner Fred Smoot is still dealing with a hip pointer and has been limited in practice as well.

...

The Redskins may use a host of players Sunday to replace defensive end Jason Taylor, who is out after having surgery for compartment syndrome in his left leg.

Demetric Evans is in line to start, but given his role playing tackle in nickel packages and other duties, Zorn said the Redskins may use a rotation there. Chris Wilson is likely to get reps as a rush end on third downs, and the Redskins hope Erasmus James can get over his knee problems to be active this week. "It could be a committee [replacing Taylor]," Zorn said.

Linebacker Marcus Washington has played as an end before, and practiced with the defensive line in the past, but Zorn does not expect Washington to be used there much this week.

"That's not necessarily where we have him slated," Zorn said.

...

Zorn said Reed Doughty is likely to remain paired with LaRon Landry in the base defensive package, but with the Redskins using so many three-safety sets, rookie Chris Horton could start, too.

Horton has made plays every week and Zorn said the youngster will play a lot in Dallas regardless. Horton was seen signing a copy of "Horton Hears a Who" for a UCLA fan who mailed it to the team.

Another thing of note from last weeks game

1/2 of our completed passes were screen type plays. Where Moss or Cooley took a step back from the line.

That should slow down the pass rush a little, then we need to pound it up inside with CP and take deep shots all over the place.

Really keep em guessing.

And he wouldn't against a healthy Jansen? Even back when Jansen was good Ellis has always had good games against us...now that Jansen is bad it could be scary, if we have to play JJ I hope Yoder or Cooley play ever snap starting with a chip on Ellis or Ware or whoever is on the right side. Thomas is the weak link of their defense, he can't match up with Cooley, Yoder, or Davis over the middle, they can chip and still get 5 yards a pop for us. I think we shock the world and win this game b/c the west coast actually is the best style offense to play against this defense. Your not gonna win too often trying to out muscle them and your not gonna have time for the 5 step drops we used to try. Just like the Eagles did, you beat this defense with quick throws, screens and the occasional deep shot, we now have the system to do it. And I'm more worried about our offense than our defense, I think we've shown we can play the pass against teams with a lot more weapons than the Cowboys. Because Blache isn't as dumb or arrogant as GG Springs will man up with TO and he'll still get some but he won't dominate and Witten is great but just a TE he can be covered as long as you know where he is, to me this game comes down to stopping Barber/Jones and Taylor being out might actually help us here, cause evans is much stronger against the run. I say Redskins 21-17!

Not saying anyone said that he WOULD be back in a week.
Quote from Taylor NFL.com :
"It's all a matter of how well the body responds to the surgery and the nerve issue and all that. Day-to-day for me," Taylor said. "In a perfect world I'd play Sunday, but it would be tough to get off crutches on Wednesday and tee it up. I want to play as soon as I can. I don't know. ... It could be a week or a couple months. You never know."
Still don't see how what JLC said was stupid. Just pointed out that he won't be back in a week as some folks had speculated. Why don't you just call him fat and tell him to go to baltimore like everyone else?

Looking at our schedule, I like our chances in the 2nd half of the year.

it really helps to have non-division games in-between our divisional games which are at home.

I now say 3-3 in division, all wins coming at home.

Then looks like 3 or 4 more losses, maybe Pitt, Sea and Bal... if the first two get better and the third doesnt get worse.

Of course I can also see us going on a run. Shoot, if we win this week, I say we win the division.

That's because they've been through the wars with him in the past and have faith and love for him. But they aren't impartial, anybody can see that Jansen was getting abused during the preseason and he lost his job to a second year undrafted free agent, that says it all right there.

A note on Jansen;

his first pass pro in sunday, he and Thomas miscommunicated which led to a JC sack.

His first run play, he drove the dude 14 yards downfield.

It obvious putting pressure on the back move is too much for his reconstructed achillies and knee. Sometimes the strength just never comes back.

But when he can lean into a player with his upper body, the legs do a lot less.

If he is in, we run. if not, we pass. That simple.

we are in great shape! and look miles away from that debacle in NY to open the season. We just got the tie breakers against what most likely will be two wild card challengers and even if the next two weeks go poorly we get the Rams. Meaning at worst we should be 3-3 and right in the thick of the last wildcard spot with all the rest of our division games at home and still getting the browns, lions, and bengals...that means more than likely we need just three wins out of our other 7 games to get to 9-7. We should be able to do that and could still be looking at 10 wins this year, these last two games were the key to our season, if we had lost one or both then we'd have been under some real pressure on the road at Dallas and Philly, as it is, we should be loose knowing we have a chance to steal one or both but that we're ok if we don't.

Posted by: zjfr2 | September 25, 2008 2:34 PM | Report abuse

Yes but we could afford these luxury picks k squared...since....oh never mind.

oh and Realistic One, if you think REALLY hard, maybe bust out your abucus, you'll realize the following doesn't make a whole lot of sense:

"Dallas, 31-17.

Game over by the third quarter. Barber gets two 4th quarter TD's."

Think this game will come down to the wire. One score game. Skins +11.5 is a...dare I say the "L" word...no, I can't risk it. BUt it's a safe bet.

The fact is we are in the Best devision and we are in last place. This insnt back in the day with 3 divisions and 3 wild cards. Three teams from the east are gonna go so we are going to have to beat east teams to make it in. not saying these wins werent big they were, but were gonna need more then just tie breakers this year.

-------------------------------------------

17-3, 3rd quarter. Look, Wade is gonna bring the juice against JC. Wade and Garrett vs. Zorn and GB is a mismatch...MISMATCH. No one here talks about the important stuff, but that's one of the big matchups from Sunday.

'Skins D will play well, heck holding Romo to 17 after 3 is pretty good. But this O is gonna struggle. The turnover free season ends.

Barber gets an early 4th quarter TD to make it 24-3, the D loosens up and JC gets a few cheapies. Barber cleans up with another one, 31-17.

I've seen Carter, Taylor, Wilson, and Evans all get snaps outside. Don't know if James has seen action. Haven't seen Jackson either. My guess is he's right around 5/6 on the DE depth chart. For total DL, Alexander, Golston, Monty, and Griff all get significant snaps too. 10/11 on the total d-line depth chart.

I'm w/PDX - I don't see the skins resting any starters at any time during this season. Let's face it - it's a tough schedule and a long season.

Last time dallas saw this Redskins team, they got whupped. A wonderful Nasty Nasty beatdown.

Romo went 3 quarters and did nothing but get beat up. Barber never saw a hole bigger than the one on his backside.

dallas can not only be beaten, they can be massacred. What's important is they know it.

I agree Alex;

Sadly we could split in the NFC, go 10-6 and miss the playoffs.

i dont know who will win the West;

GB takes the North, our win over Detroit doesnt give us any tie breakers there.

South goes to Carolina, with TB nipping at their heels.

So we need to go 4-2 in division. I still think the gmen falter.

I'd like to say 21-20 skins but last time I made a prediction it went the other way so I'm not. (Arrogantly superstitious prediction finished)

Or since these days fights usually result in someone falling on the ground, we now may say: "I stomped that bama".

Some random others:

"I punished that bama"

"I tightened that bama up"

"I rolled that bama"

Use at your discretion.

Wade and Garrett vs. Zorn and GB is a mismatch...MISMATCH. No one here talks about the important stuff, but that's one of the big matchups from Sunday.

Posted by: The Realistic One | September 25, 2008 2:44 PM

My man speaks the truth. Only I think he's confused at the meaning of it.

You Cowboys fans are fooled into thinking Phillips is a good coach. Faaar from it. It's no surprise that a young, injured, "less talented" Washington team played you to within 5 points in Dallas, then blew you out by 21 in Washington. You were simply outcoached. And Zorn has already shown better offensive gameplanning in 3 games than Saunders did in 2 years. Zorn vs. Wade is a monster mismatch, in the worst way for the Cowboys.

I'll give you Garrett though. The guy's a stud. But Blache has already shut down two of the most prolific offenses in the league, with 2 of the highest rated QBs in the league. My money's on Blache washing with Garrett.

In the end, you better hope your "talent" carries you. Otherwise, you 'Boys will be in for a long day.

I don't know that we need 4-2 in div. but need to pick up a min of 2 wins (dallas and dallas, anyone?). If we go 4-2, we could realisticly WIN the division, no?

We have to look at Philly as our best chance for making the playoffs. Beat them 2x and we have a good shot.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 25, 2008 2:45 PM

Lets just go ahead and make it Dallas, honestly i wouldnt mind.

only two teams last year put up 30 on us and the Patriots were one of the two, the Eagles second game was the other. Our defense is better this year than last and there's no way they score 30 if special teams or turnovers don't give them points.

Posted by: Red of the DMV | September 25, 2008 2:58 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, but as i mentioned, i think we will stumble. i mean really. We were looking at 5-11, 6-10 and at best 7-9 this year intitially.

new coach, new offense... so I expect a hiccup here and there. Not in division tho... so going over 500 is a pretty good season.

In the silly predictions game, I say the final score this Sunday in Dallas is going to be 2-0, with the winner decided by a safety.*

* Preferably by the spirit of Sean Taylor possessing Chris Horton, who then believes Matt McBriar punting out of his own endzone to be Brian Moorman.

I'll take our ends over theirs any day, DT is probably even, I'll take Fletcher over anybody they have and I'll take a healthy Marcus and Rocky (which it finally appears we have) over there linebackers. With a healthy group of corners I think Springs, Smoot, and Rogers versus Samuels (so overrated), Shephard, and brown is a push, I think Dawkins has fallen off some so I give Landry the edge and I think SS is a push. So yeah I think we have a better defense than the Eagles. I've never seen as bad a gameplan/lack of adjustments as that Steelers game, they blitzed 8 the whole game and I felt like Vince Vaughn screaming "hot route, red seven, red seven, HOT ROUTE" at the TV. When Byron Sandwich finally got in there after the game was over he had the Steelers two longest plays of the game back to back on quick dumps to Ward and Miller. The Eagles blitz to stop the run but their secondary is overrated.

No doubt Dallas will come out hyped Sunday. I think they want to prove to everyone that they were on cruise control at FedEx last year.

I know as 'Skins fans we want to believe that we straight up got in their a__, but c'mon, you can't tell me if we had the number one seed overall in the conference locked up, we wouldn't have had the foot off the gas just a little.

But lets say if they did tank it on purpose at FedEx, it was all for nothing, considering that they were ONE and DONE once AGAIN, for the TENTH season in the row, or somehting like that.

Friends are hard for me to find right now considering that 6 out of every 10 people I know are Dallas fans.

Maybe more like seven.

Skins: 30 Dallas: 23

Funny...I'm not a 'Boys fan. I like how you read that into my comments, though.

Comparing what WAS did to DAL last year in Week 17 (with Gibbs coaching his last hurrah) to Zorn vs. Wade is just stoopid. Even Dallas haters would admit that. Sure, Wade is certainly no Walsh or Gibbs, but he's farther along the line than Zorn (at least right now...maybe not forever, but he is now).

Saying that this D will hold Garrett and his crew to 10 or 17...that's just laughable. No way. We're talking about a team that went on the road to GB and could have easily put up 35 or 40. And WAS is going to their house and holding them to two TD's (or less)? No chance. Flat out, no chance.

Stop drinking the Kool Aid and look at this matchup. Not just "Santana is gonna run all over their DB's"; look at where the games are won! A gimpy Heyer vs. Ellis. How Garrett will try and match up Witten down the seams against WAS LB's. Even the punters; a former Pro Bowler against a rook. The return game; Felix and PacMan against a team that just gave up a Bush PR for six.

I think Washington will hang better than most Dallas fans realize; they're talking blowout and it won't happen (at least not early). But by the 4th quarter, this game is a mismatch and Dallas wins going away.

Type of person who would likely root for the Cowboys: General Chuck Yeager, Rosa Parks, the Beatles, Betty Crocker, Ronald Reagan, Sydney Portier, John Wayne, Dag Hammerskjold, Andy Taylor, Stevie Wonder, the Fonz, J.R. Ewing (team owner), Judy Garland, Bjorn Borg, George Foreman, Johnny Cash, James Taylor, Hercule Poirot, Bob Hope, Earth, Wind and Fire.

Type of person who would likely be attracted to the Skins: Mr. Carlin on the old Bob Newhart Show, Sarah Palin, Barbara Streisand, Rush Limbaugh, Al Sharpton, Tony Kornheiser, Richard Nixon, Dick Cheney, Barney Fife, Joan Collins, Charles Haley, Joan Rivers, Leon Spinks, both Clintons, both Bush's, Kojak, Roseanne Barr, Jessie Ventura, John McEnroe.

Bank it like Bernanke! ;-)
