Kelly Reveals Thumb Injury

Looking for theories about wide receiver Malcolm Kelly's lack of production through the first four games?

He revealed today that he suffered ligament damage in his right thumb on the first pass play of the game against the Rams. Kelly said he's still able to play and practice but conceded that he's experiencing significant amounts of pain.

"When the ball hits it, every single time I catch a pass almost, it hurts real bad," he said. "But I have enough strength in it to catch the ball and hold onto the ball. But afterwards, I get up and it's just like pain starts shooting through it."

Kelly, who has 65 yards on six receptions through four games, said he has been told that he is at least 3-4 weeks away from playing pain-free and taking the field without tape.

"During the week sometimes when the ball hits it, it kind of feels a certain way - actually it feels pretty bad.," he said. "It's not like I can't go out and play a practice or anything like that. They just try to tape it up as good as they can. And then, come game time, you get that little candy shot in there, hopefully helps it out a little bit."

Hilarious. Since when does a receiver's thumb injury cause his quarterback to lock in on his first read?

6 receptions...with your signing bonus and salary.. Thats $700k per catch, so far?? I smell IR for the rest of the season. Congrats, Kelly, you hit the amateur GM Vinny Lottery in 2008.

"Kelly Reveals Thumb Injury"

It's my understanding the injury to Kelly's thumb occured when a buccaneer defensive back kicked him in the azz.

Where else would you believe Kelly keeps his thumb?

Posted by: CheyenneWY | October 8, 2009 3:03 PM | Report abuse

Chey - I doubt the Redskins will score 45 point combined over the next 13 Sunday's. This team is quickly heading to 3-13. The fact that the news around this team is about Sherm and GB after A WIN last week and A BIG GAME COMING UP is pathetic.

Posted by: authorofpoetry | October 8, 2009 2:47 PM | Report abuse

45 would be very difficult for a team to score without defensive or special teams TDs. We don't have those. We never get points from D or teams. Were lucky if we get 9 possesions a game. We don't even get good field position. If we scored a TD every single time we got the ball we'd probably only get the ball 7 times a game.

I asked my magic 8 ball if Zorn would be fired by 5pm today. I debated posting the answer up here, but it said “my sources say no”, so I won’t post it because I might get blasted for quoting unnamed sources. So just forget I said anything.

"I don't know what my role will be," said Lewis, 67, a longtime NFL coach and disciple of the West Coast offense.

How many people here have accepted a job where you have no idea what you will be doing?

Criticize him if you must, but Zorn deserves better. Either he's the head coach or he's not.

Ceratto should teach a course in publicly emasculating the people you hire to lead.

I think someone is trying to assist Kelly with an answer on why he disappears in a game... He needs an "excuse".
With his current catch and TD stats, he should not continue to be a Starting WR.

But, on the Skins..its not your ability and how you play but, the size of your Contract and/or your Draft position that determines if you start.

If Zorn is going to get canned it will happen the day after a game, or the same day if Danny just can't wait. The more likely scenario is he gets the axe after the Eagles game, which is followed by a bye week and would give the interim coach a little time to make changes. Only a stupid football team would fire their head coach on a Thursday... wait a minute...

From the times, O'Halloran is acting like someone insulted his mama....:

Things have gotten even crazier at Redskin Park with the Greg Blache-not-talking fiasco.

According to the Pro Football Writers Association, the NFL agreed to Blache not taking questions.

Blache will give a statement on Thursday and then secondary coach Jerry Gray will answer questions.

The Redskins are violating the spirit of the coordinator access rule so they won’t get fined.

As for Blache, coach Jim Zorn didn’t reveal much as to why Blache has stopped taking questions and ended his weekly appearances on Comcast and News 4.

“For Greg, he’s really needed a break,” Zorn said. “From his standpoint, we talked about it and I actually talked to the league about a break for him and they’ve agreed. I would put it as personal reasons. It is a needed break for him. That’s why I’ve allowed it.

“Jerry Gray will do an excellent job speaking the same language as Greg did. He will give you great information.”

Zorn was asked why Blache isn’t being held accountable even though he called himself the leader of the defense last week.

“But then he would have had to answer a bunch of questions,” Zorn said.

And with that, the PR staff had the subject turn to all things football.

What a circus.

Zorn was asked why Blache isn’t being held accountable even though he called himself the leader of the defense last week.

“But then he would have had to answer a bunch of questions,” Zorn said.

O'Halloran is just sour because he and the rest of the local media won't get their juicy "LOL" quote they've grown accustomed to.

In his line of work I can understand, but as a fan, I could give two sh**s about a quote.

Win some games with quality and quantity is all I ask.

Bean - While I appreciate the Times' coverage....There going straight 'Post Style' on this one. Dude is old and tired of answering questions from the local media who think they are taking questions from Obama in the Rose Garden. And the questions most of the times are always some hindsight/woulda/coulda/shoulda type. He's so tired of it, he even went to the PFWA before he made the announcement. He's trying to save a few years of his life by avoiding this tense non-issue issue.

BTW when was the last time the Moore guy from Indy spoke? And a few years back, Andy Reid NEVER let Moringwheg speak, nor DC Johnson.

In DC, eveything gets blown out of porportion. And reporters ONLY focus on the cover-up.

People complain about JC, but Romo is a guy who can't hit wide open guys 10 yards in front of him. Plus I'm not looking for a guy who is gonna give me a heart attack every other play (see throw completely across field vs Denver).

Posted by: Rypien11 | October 8, 2009 3:57 PM | Report abuse

I don't get why Romo being good, bad, better or worse has anything to do with JC.....who cares how bad Dallas' or anybody else's QB is, our's stinks.

Who I do think will be available one way or another is McNabb. I think Philly has wanted him out for a while now and back-to-back 300 yard games by Kolb will give them the excuse they've been looking for to replace him. If they either make him available by trade or cut I hope we pounce, I think McNabb when healthy is still one of the top 5 QBs in this league, knows the west coast offense, and still has 3-5 good years left. I'd take him in a second and rebuild everywhere else, worry about finding that young QB of the future later....

This week so far about 1700 have their picks in, despite us being 2-2 and Carolina 0-3, 93% of the people have picked Carolina......sadly so did I....

If that's the case I hope they don't send picks to philly to essentially rent him for a year. And I don't see the FO sitting around waiting a year for his contract with Philly to expire so they can pick him up as a FA.

“I had no idea what it was like there until I got there,” Hall said. “You can’t even really describe it. As soon as I got there, I could see right away that it was different. Things like the structure of football, the way you go about preparing and the attitudes and everything – they were just all [messed] up. There wasn’t any direction. It was just really a lot of chaos.”

Here's a clue, how about not starting him if he's not full go. Sure as hell can't get any worse as far as our #2.

Posted by: dieselfan44 | October 8, 2009 5:36 PM

He's not getting any better till an offseason surgery. He's full go ... he's got the candy shot.

You know Darnell Dockett from the Cardinals? Well...me and dude went at it on the field right after my QB threw an INT. Dude was big back then, but I brought him down....And there's video footage to prove it....

Q: Hey, Malcolm, why aren't you getting thrown to?

A: See, what had happened was...During the week sometimes when the ball hits it, it kind of feels a certain way - actually it feels pretty bad.

Tim Tebow = Gary Beban - (look it up)

He's gonna get drafted, sit behind a HOF QB, get frustrated and retire from professional football?

Skins out of the picture there, no HOF QB on our roster

WR-TE-WR.

"And then, come game time, you get that little candy shot in there, hopefully helps it out a little bit."

Nice.

I can see John Burrell walking into the lockerroom pregame shouting "the icecream man is comiiiiiiiiiiing!"

Hillarious and sadly on the mark. Although with the Lewis hiring I can't help but think that Snyder's going to make a run at Holmgren when the season's over. To get him you'd think he'd have to back out of the personnel process.

Young man, please take the time to come up with a better LIE than that!

Does the thumb have ANYTHING to do with running routes correctly? Or jumping up to catch a ball...

In the infamous words of Joe Wilson: YOU LIE!!!

Posted by: LuvMySkinz | October 8, 2009 7:04 PM | Report abuse

This is not the time Young Man to install an excuse. Fo Realz....

Posted by: 4thFloor

Unless he's dropping balls, which he isn't, it doesn't even qualify as an excuse as the thumb has absolutely no effect on his route running; he just isn't getting open. If he was and dropping balls, I might get out the violin.

And the Redskins continue to give us more entries into the Excuses Super Bowl - add this thumb injury and Blache's refusal to speak to the media and us Redskin fans will soon have to find enough paper bags to cover our heads.

This team is fully of whining ninnies - a hang nail will throw their patterns off.

This wide receiver should be named Michael Westbrook - he's full of excuses, lacks mojo, and would make a wonderful set of bookends with Michael Westbrook. Add the other draft bust at wide receiver and the Redskins are an embarrassment.

OOOOOH DADDY MAKE IT STOP HURTING MY TUMB IT HURT SO BAD; BUCK UP SOONER BOY STOP THAT CRYIN AND WIPE THAT SNOT OFF YOUR FACE AND BUCKLE UP THAT CHIN STRAP YOU'RE GONNA PLAY SUNDAY AND I DON'T WANNA HEAR NO EXCUSES!

Ok. That's no problem. Can we start Marko Mitchell then?

Posted by: DesiHungama | October 8, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Hey..Start me.

I am old and hurt but damn me if I drop the ball if you throw my way for 700K?

Posted by: DesiHungama | October 8, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

kelly's thumb is injured?..fine put d. thomas and m.mitchell in as the outside receivers. they are much faster than kelly anyway and kelly has done very little this season. If these receivers can't run the fade patterns have them come into practice early and stay late until they can, just practice until they get it right. will zorn be man enough to tell the player's that? enough of the b.s. excuses.

No I'm pretty sure this guy doesn't play hurt, at least based on the comments here

Suck it up Kelly, start earning that paycheck. Become a man. You haven't done jack yet.

Posted by: VegasJim | October 9, 2009 1:09 AM | Report abuse

I blame it all on Vinnie. He's the one who drafted this stiff along with the other stiffs Thomas and Davis.

Posted by: joeboggs | October 9, 2009 7:55 AM | Report abuse

It would be nice if the QB would actually throw to him, then maybe we can see if Kelly is good enough.
