I voted Kelly...but I ultimately think they'll both be productive players.

I say Devin has a better year, but only because of Kelly's injury history- if he stay's healthy, Malcolm on the X..

How does one not "get" the position of WR? He's played it for a year now, right?

Posted by: jboogie1 | August 26, 2009 9:56 AM | Report abuse

Route-running, technique, finding good angles/soft spots in the secondary.

Last season he came out and had trouble lining up in the right spots, pushing off receivers to get separation, stuff like that.

At lower levels (college and JuCo), you can rely on superior size/speed/athleticism to outplay sorry DBs who have no business covering you.

In the NFL everyone is a great athlete, and success depends on details and nuances.

Look at Jerry Rice and Wes Welker. Neither of them are "superior" athletes as far as size/speed go, but they "get" the position and were pretty successful at it.

Frak I agree, Mzk if he stays healthy and plays in 14-16 games. I predict that Kelly will average 3-4 catches a game Thomas 2-3.

4 qb's? i've never seen that on a roster. It will be interesting to see how much playing time each QB gets. Campbell better get a half. Then I wouldn't mind seeing Daniels/Brennan get a quarter each.

Posted by: brian58 | August 26, 2009 10:02 AM | Report abuse

4 QB's is not a normal thing but I am sure it is done from time to time, Chucky seemed to keep 8-12 QB's a season with TB. BTW, add him to the list of Coaches who somehow are not working.

Neither one will have a big year if Jason Campbell doesn't start throwing the ball already.

I'm going to go with Brother Malcolm over Devin the Dude.

Everyone raves about Malcolm. They seem to mention that Kelly has the skill if he can stay healthy, and Thomas is more of the potential guy.

Either way I expect them both to have decent to good seasons.

Greg,
I have long felt that the team has the WR's finally to do a spread the field get the ball to a bunch of guys system, like they do in NE. They just need to realize it.

I picked Kelly for the poll because of his height and deceptive speed. However I am hopefull there will be a rotation where all four guys get some play at the position. The important part is that the person in that position can make an impact early so that he can draw the attention away from Moss.

Posted by: cgshelton | August 26, 2009 10:16 AM | Report abuse

I think Devin Thomas will get underthrown more on deep routes this year but Malcom Kelly will have more passes sail over his head on intermediate routes.

Pretty sure Fred Davis has the best year of the youngins. I predict that FredDavis/ChrisCooley vs. JasonWitten/MartellusBennett will become an overplayed Sportscenter theme at some point this year.

Question -

I keep hearing people say that the drafting/development of Fred Davis is crucial to Zorn's schemes b/c they rely heavily on 2-TE sets.

I don't ever remember Seattle relying on running 2-TE sets.

I remember they had Jerramy Stevens there for a while who played alright when he wasn't bashing guys in the nuts.

Other than that?

So, we have an annoying troll who continually and repitiously violates the Post's "rules governing commentaries and discussions." He's proud of it, and neither Jason Reid nor Cindy seems to be interested in stopping him. Maybe they need more resources? They are more effective at this on some of the non-sports blogs.

It seems hopeless to appeal to the troll or to Cindy and Jason. Maybe the right place to direct complaints is to the Post's ombudsman?

Yeah, and how successful was Chucky when it came to developing QBs?

Keeping 4 Qbs is asinine, especially since neither Colt nor Chase have any real NFL prospects.

If you have to keep one, keep Chase. At leat he can scramble/run - which is an asset.

From a previous Mayor post:

"Brennan is down with the cool Chris Cooley set, and he possesses the type of swagger I hear owner Daniel Snyder likes in his players. But some in the organization believe Brennan has a bit too much swagger for a sixth-round draft pick who has done, well, nothing in the NFL."

Translation: Colt is an arrogant donkey who doesn't know the NFL game.

Based on his preseason performances, I don't think he's too far ahead of the developmental curve than Chase right now.

Posted by: p1funk | August 26, 2009 10:47 AM | Report abuse

Hope they both are productive, but Kelly is clearly the more NFL ready player. We knew Thomas was more of a "project guy" when he was drafted because of his lack of football experience.

But after a couple of years, I have serious doubts that Thomas is intelligent enough to ever get it done in the NFL.

Posted by: littlejohn6971 | August 26, 2009 10:50 AM | Report abuse

Jason Campbell has a flaw of waiting till the receiver is open before he throws the ball and not trusting the receiver to make the play if he perceives him to be covered.

I have not seen him overcome that so far. Zorn is giving him more time in this preseason game. If this flaw is not put to rest and Zorn does not address it, the Redskins are toast as long as Campbell plays with this flaw.

So you'd rather he be like Ben Rothelisberger and throw 17 TDs with 15 INTs instead of 13 TDs and 6 INTs? This may work when you have the number 1 defense in the league and the other team isn't turning your screwups into points. Unfortunately, we did not have the Steelers defense last year. Campbell needs to keep doing what he is doing. The rest will fall into place.

Betts is waiting to either get stopped on the 1 yard line or fumble in a key spot. I don't think I have ever seen him run over anybody and with knee injuries he is not going to out run people to the corner Plus is pass protection is suspect at best. I wouldn't trust Campbell to lead me out of a house fire. Even if you don't agree on Betts, Campbel has to go... I took me sometime, but I finally got Eddie Jordan out of here. Here are the NFL's number guides

-Numbers 1 to 19 are worn by quarterbacks, kickers, and punters.
Since 2004,[3] Wide receivers are also allowed to wear numbers between 10 and 19 if they so choose, even if there's an 80-89 number available.

-Numbers 20 to 49 are worn by running backs, tight ends (40-49, when an 80-89 number is unavailable), cornerbacks and safeties.

-Numbers 50 to 59 are worn by linebackers and offensive linemen.

-Numbers 60 to 79 are worn by members of both the offensive line (the tackles, guards and centers) and defensive line (the defensive ends, defensive tackles or nose guard).

-Numbers 80 to 89 are worn by wide receivers and tight ends.

-Numbers 90 to 99 are worn by linebackers and defensive linemen. In effect since 1984.

-Numbers 0 and 00 are no longer used, though they were issued in the NFL before the number standardization in 1973. George Plimpton famously wore 0 during a brief preseason stint at quarterback for the Detroit Lions. Jim Otto wore number "00" ("aught-oh") during most of his career with the Oakland Raiders. Wide receiver Ken Burrough of the Houston Oilers also wore "00" during his NFL career in the 1970s.

Posted by: alex35332 | August 26, 2009 11:19 AM | Report abuse

It should be noted that this NFL numbering system is based on a player's primary position. Also, if a player changes primary positions during his career, he does not usually have to change his number unless he changes from an eligible receiver to ineligible or vice versa (Jason Peters is a notable example, having moved between tight end, where he wore number 86, to offensive tackle, where he currently wears 71). Any player wearing any number may play at any position on the field at any time (though players wearing numbers 50-79 must let the referee know that they are playing out of position by reporting as an "ineligible number in an eligible position")

They're out there for a reason, same as Kendall. They're too broken down to participate in preseason. They'll get picked up if someone goes down after 5-8 games in the regular season.

You mean like the Skins, when Chris Samuels needs to sit by Week 4 and the coaches/FO finally realize what we already know - that a starting tackle combo of Stephon Heyer and Jeremy Bridges is going to have Jon-Jansen-like catastrophic effects...

Posted by: p1funk | August 26, 2009 11:23 AM | Report abuse

It seems pretty clear that Kelly is the more "polished" receiver, and Thomas is a slightly better athlete. Kelly has made more catches so far this pre season, and has been targeted more. Thomas is a better special teamer, not just a KR, but has the speed, strength, and attitude to make tackles.

Kelly seems like the safer bet right now. Thomas seemed like the safer bet all last year. We really need 1 guy to emerge, but ultimately we need both guys to emerge.

Oh Yeah I forgot, many commenters have already discarded both players from day 1, so there you have it.

Since the rocket surgeons at the WaPo have ignored our requests to permanently ban this guy for irritating us and wasting our time, perhaps if we irritate the Post, it will cause them to rethink.

I suspect the REAL reason they don't ban him is because he posts so often, and each one counts as a hit they can take to their advertisers to show "views" of RI.

May I suggest hitting "report abuse" for every one of his false/deceptive posts? Maybe the Post will realize we help butter their bread, and our wishes should be respected.

Rich Campbell says DThomas is fielding kickoffs today with Rock out of practice. That's how the guy made a name for himself in college...seems like they should give him more chances at both return positions.

a lot of commenters complain about not building through the draft. I wonder if they have actually done the research on which teams have the highest draft % on their roster.

I started to give Danny and Vinny credit the second they got Joe Gibbs to come coach, and Rodgers, Sean Taylor, Landry, McIntosh, Golston, Montgomery, Horton, Doughty, Moore, Orakpo, Blades, Campbell, Betts, Cartwright, Cooley, Dockery were all drafted by the skins

pabrian: "a lot of commenters complain about not building through the draft. I wonder if they have actually done the research on which teams have the highest draft % on their roster."

It's an uneven record, but certainly has its share of successes. Funny thing is that Vinny seems to do a little better when he has fewer choices (which with the Skins happens a lot). I would guess he's more comfortable getting linemen through free agency and other positions through the draft (as opposed, say, to Ozzie Newsome, who leans the other way) but the fact is, he's done some of both. Maybe when he's got 10 choices, he starts gambling and his success rate goes down.

If you have to keep one, keep Chase. At leat he can scramble/run - which is an asset.

Sound logic. Especially since if we end up using our 3rd string, it's probably because our O-line has officially broken down and can't protect anyone for more than 2 seconds.

Will certainly be interesting to see the Chase/Colt performances this week & next.

Not only that, but you can expect that the 3rd string guy running a first team offense isn't going to be that sharp - alot of miscues and broken-down plays.

It's always nice to have a guy who can at least pull the ball down and get 5-10 yards out of nothing.

With the O-line, it's all about surviving this season with whatever bubble gum & duct tape until we draft/buy our new O-line parts next year.

By the way, I've gotta say I'm really liking the WR situation, between Malcolm, Devin and Marko (they better keep MM!). One or more of these guys could be the real deal.

Posted by: chasgiffen | August 26, 2009 12:16 PM | Report abuse

Samson151, thanks for the response. It would be nice to see a list of who has the least amount of free agents on their roster. I suppose drafting DB's is the easiest thing because if you have enough speed you can probably make the transition.

The biggest problem with Redskins fans is the remeberance of our dynasty years and the expectation of having another. Most franchises never have one, and that was pre salary cap. We had the highest paid roster in the league those years which allowed us to have tremendous depth.

Parcells is famous for saying player selection is 50/50 at best, if your getting it right half of the time your doing well. We also lost our BEST player to tragedy, we would have had the best D in the league and way more turnovers. The team respnded with heart and the management kept the roster together.

Skins fans should get on the bus or go away, because the hope that we are so bad that Danny sells the team it ridonkulous.

Also, Packers apparently have a spare interior lineman, Scott Wells, (former starting center) who is recently disgruntled by being benched and replaced by Jason Spitz (and not, in turn, replacing either of the other two guards). Florio suggets he's got trade marked all over him. What do the Packers need that we got extra of? ... other than WRs ... they seem good at WR.

I believe our salaries now are the highest cumulative in the league, ala the Yankees..Difficult stadium, prices, consistently mediocre teams, Danny taking on the role of GM/Czar, more opponent fans then ours at stadium..We have a right to wax ebola towards the dysfunktion, its the American Way..

I'm not sure how blogs work and all for those who create them. Do they get any compensation for it? Any recognition? Anything at all?

If the more comment entries (posts) you get on a blog does it benefit those who provide the blog forum?

If so, who ever is posting the same ol' bs isn't going anywhere. I don't think they'll get blocked. Has anyone ever been blocked? I'm pretty sure there are enough people that have complained to the Post, and yet they're still posting.

Red:

It works like any media, if you show a track record of use/eyeballs/clicks/comments than you can sell more add space at higher costs on those sections, or at least aggregate the numbers from popular sections like RI, The Fix, whateves to paint a larger picture for site wise advertising.

Also they may get revue from those that purchase something from an advertiser that entered from here.

But no its not like every post is translating into .001 cents or anything.
