LaRon Landry is NFC defensive player of the week

Strong safety LaRon Landry was named the NFC defensive player of the week for his performance against the Green Bay Packers, the NFL announced Wednesday.

"Dirty 30" was credited with a game-high 13 tackles, 10 of them unassisted, and produced both Redskins turnovers during a 16-13 overtime victory against the Packers in Week 5 at FedEx Field.

Early in the game Landry forced a fumble that gave Washington possession of the football at the Packers' 21-yard line. And on the Packers' final possession in overtime, Landry intercepted a pass, giving the Redskins the ball at the Packers' 39 yard line. Place kicker Graham Gano ended that drive, and the game, by kicking a 33-yard field goal.

Through the first five weeks of the season, Landry is second in the NFL with 52 tackles. Number of tackles, however, is not an official statistic. Inside linebacker Rocky McIntosh leads the team in tackles with 66 (37 assisted and 29 solo), according to Redskins coaches.

Kudos to Landry!

...but I hope this squad doesn't let ANY accolades swell them up. I have a feeling Shanahanigans won't let 'em.

...too many holes on this team to let any concentration slip.

..amazing how different our outlook is this year, eh?

I was ready to kill'm last year for being the highest paid SS in the league, even though he was playing FS, and being so garbage but what a night and day difference it is to see him at the spot we drafted him for! Ditto on the well deserved!

Jim Hazlenutt's recent installation of a 3-4 defense had had an impact on the way opponents play us on offense.

First and foremost, the current defensive personnel is not ideal for this defense but we're moving ahead with it anyway. The D will only get better as appropriate personnel (a true NT as well as DE/LB hybrids) is added. We have to be happy with the play so far this year.

The stats don't mean a damn thing. This is a risk/reward type of defense so the only stats I car about are going to be sacks, turnovers and 3rd downs. Hazlenutt's aggressive blitzing practices are going to leave the D susceptible to their opponents picking up chunks of running or passing yards. With the personnel we have, we're going to be most effective by stunting linemen and LB's and bringing numbers in an effort to own the LOS.

Let me tell you, the Colts D gives up big plays and so do the Patriots. For this style of D, don't look for impressive stats in terms of yards allowed, look for a bend-but-don't-break style that aims more for shutting down 1 or 2 specific key offensive players, avoiding the 'big play' and beats the crap out of people with their safeties and LB's creating turnovers.

Get used to some ugly defensive play at times but this defense is only going to get better with contributions from the likes of Sackpo, Dirty30, Lorenzo, McIntosh, Jarmon and Moore.

LaRon has changed some minds from the dark days of last year. Hope things keep in the right direction.

I think the league got it right on this one. Landry had a beast of a game and teams are going to have to start game planning around he and Orakpo. I love it. Now, if Moore and Hall could take up Landry's weight room regimen, maybe they'll start beasting out as well.

Week 5 in the RI Peeps league featured a nail biter between Fins Eat Skins and the Omaha Steers. Steers had the Viking defense, while Fins, down 14 points, had Adrian Peterson on Monday night. As Peterson edged forward, the Vikes defense fell back. Alas, Steers (2-3) held on for the win. Fins (1-4) had a strong game, with 17 from Vernon Davis and the philly defense. Ray Rice had 28 to lead Steers.

4-12 (2-3) struggled, as only Santana Moss got into double figures, but East Coast Shaft (3-2) had 7 of 9 slots score 4 or less. In a snoozer, 4-12 wins, 50-43.

Houston Buffaloes (4-1) continued their winning ways, posting a 74-52 win over South Hill Skulls (1-3-1). Skulls struggled with the bye week and an injury to Mark Clayton. In fact, 4 of Skulls starters had goose eggs. miles austin led the Buffs with 24.

The Jackalopes (2-3) topped an injury depleted Noone Tampa (1-3-1) by an 89-69 score. Percy Harvin and the Bears defense led the Jackalopes with 21 each.

The Futaleufu Swimmers (3-2) got back to winning with the week's top score in a 99-82 win over He Nate Me (2-3). Malcom Floyd, Rivers and Chris Johnson combined for 80 points for Futa. The Jets defense led Nate with 16.

Future Winners (5-0) continued to be the leagues only unbeaten, with a solid 85-58 win over 35332's Zombie Hord (3-2). Unfortunately for Hord, his top scorers were on his bench, lesean mccoy and Crabtree combined for 36 -- for naught. Future's top scorer was also on his bench, Brandon Lloyd. Still, Future got 27 from hakeem nicks and 15 from Antonio Gates in the win.

The top 2 teams both won, Future leads the league at 5-0 and remains its top scoring team, with the Buffs 1 game back.

Over in the RI Hamster league, the Raljohn Realskins (3-2) put on a show in a 126-87 win over Shanallen Skins (3-2). The two teams made a huge trade during the week, with Forte going to Real and Andre Johnson going to Shanny. It changed the outcome of the match. Forte was the top scorer this week, outscoring Johnson, 36-9. Shaun Hill had 20 for Real, who had 4 others in double digits. Brandon Lloyd's 28 led Shanny. This also marked the 3rd time the league's high score, 126, has been reached this year -- twice by Real and once by Shanny. The combined 213 points in this game is also the highest so far.

Dealer (3-1-1) topped Coproliths (1-4) by a 92-85 score. austin had 26 for for Dealer, Chris Johnson 26 for Copro. Copro had a chance for a comeback win on Monday night, but Brett Favre's late surge proved too little. Of course, if Copro had simply played his Bear defense ... he would have won.

The Trippin' Billies (3-2) cruised to a 109-59 win over the depleted KoolAid Kids (1-4). Rivers and hakeem nicks were both 20+ scorers for the Billies.

In a battle of teams having bad weeks, E Funk All Stars (3-2) posted a 52-43 win over Butz for Utz (2-3). Funk led 42-37 going into Monday night, with LT going. Butz had Keller and Sanchez. Alas, LT won the day for Funk. Butz had 6 of 9 slots finish with 5 points or less, Mark Clayton's injury a key hit for Butz. Santana Moss led Funk with 12.

The unbeaten defending champ F Street Bombers (5-0), despite a heavy hit on byes, took care of Moss City Santanimals (0-4-1), 76-58. Ray Rice led F with 28, while Moss's 4 receivers managed just 7 points total.

The league's other unbeaten, Cal Salmon (5-0), got past the Geelong Skins 75-54. Malcom Floyd led the Salmon with 31.

This coming week features a huge matchup with the two 5-0 teams, Salmon and F Bombers going at it. While the Salmon have two starters on a bye, their bigger issue is the health of QB Aaron Rodgers. Meanwhile, the Bombers welcome back Big Ben. Each team has a Raider RB -- injuries have dictated the starter -- and its been a plum role, an average of 16/ppg have gone to the Raiders starting RB.

Last time we played the Colts at Fedex was 10/27/02. Ya'll may remember we introduced the 70 greatest Redskins at half time. Darrell Green was the only current player on that list. Skins won the game 26-21. This year at half time Russ Grimm gets his HOF ring and 50 alumni return for our "homecoming" game. Just sayin'.

You were a man last year when you were forced into a defensive position that didn't cater to your talents. You didn't whine. You didn't moan. You didn't stay home and take the Boss's money and then take jabs at the coaching staff. You manned up.

This year you are obviously the skilled professional that we expected. You have suddenly taken that Shampoo Pacific Island Cockerspaniel from Pittsburgh and allowed him to showcase his Girlie look on TV while you actually make plays. You have heart, drive, ambition, and a discipline that hopefully can rub off onto Two Ton Haynesworth.
