LaRon Landry's lead in Pro Bowl voting is healthy despite his injury

By Rick Maese

Despite missing the past three games, LaRon Landry still has a comfortable lead among the NFC's strong safeties in fan voting for the Pro Bowl. Though he's been sidelined with an Achilles' tendon injury, Landry has actually extended his lead in the past two weeks, according to the most recent numbers, and his 151,083 votes puts him well ahead of Arizona's Adrian Wilson, who has 79,755 votes.

The Pro Bowl teams are based on voting from fans, players and coaches with each group's ballot counting for one-third of the final total. Voting for fans ends Dec. 20.

Though he's lost some ground, DeAngelo Hall (202,390 votes) still has the second-most votes among NFC cornerbacks, trailing Green Bay's Charles Woodson (235,681).

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick leads all NFL players in Pro Bowl voting with 729,838 votes.

A few other Redskins are still ranked in the top-five at their respective positions:

At fullback, Mike Sellers (104,282) is second only to New Orleans' Heath Evans (132,694).

Chris Cooley (127,613) is fourth among tight ends and has fewer than half the votes of the leader, Atlanta's Tony Gonzalez (273,821).

Brian Orakpo (110,553) has slipped from third to fourth among outside linebackers, well behind the top vote-getter, Green Bay's Clay Matthews (285,063).

Lorenzo Alexander (52,809) is fourth among special-teams players and has less than half the votes of front-runner Heath Farwell (116,028) from Minnesota.

Among inside linebackers, London Fletcher (83,094) is a distant fifth, while Chicago's Brian Urlacher (173,960) has surpassed San Francisco's Patrick Willis (165,485).

The league will announce the teams on Dec. 28 during primetime special on NFL Network. This season's Pro Bowl will be played on Jan. 30 in Honolulu.

If only there were some magical list of 200,000 or so diehard Redskins fans that could vote for Redskin players, we'd sweep the fan vote.

hess, from the previous, good to hear you're doing well....hopefully the skins can get a win on Sunday, and build a little mo over the last few games...still curious as to who they're bringing in/up to fill al's spot...

I'm betting that the Redskins have built an air tight case against the guy. He ought to just let it drop rather than having it all come out.

Posted by: beep-beep | December 9, 2010 6:21 AM

Really? You know you're talking about the same crew that couldn't get their story straight about benching McNabb right? If AH had done all of those things during games, they were fools to not have fined or disciplined him at that time. They admitted to his agent that they had not documentated any of the action alleged. Shanahan's a liar. They can't even pull off a suspension. And people wonder why this team isn't a whole lot better than it was last year.

Landry and Hall are really the only guys worthy of a ProBowl look this season.

Orakpo's prodution this season is about on the same track as last season. In 09, he had 7 sacks at this time of the year, then he blew up in the Oakland game and recorded 4 sacks to up his total to 11.

Sadly, though, I don't see something like that happening this season, and he may be on the outs.

Too bad. The 3-4 was supposed to accentuate his pass-rushing strength, but it doesn't look to be any better than the 4-3 fit he was in last season.

The Skins have defintely sucked more over the past few weeks.... I think Landry's pro-bowl voting lead might have shrunk if he was a part of these last few awful games.

Posted by: Alan4 | December 9, 2010 9:30 AM | Report abuse

There's more than one way to build a team and more than one way to win a title. Let's just hope the current direction is the right one...

Posted by: brownwood26 | December 9, 2010 8:49 AM | Report abuse

That's very true, most people say build in the draft, which is good about 90% of the time, but then the Saints come along with their team of mostly Free Agents, and we have a little hope.

I just think this franchise needs some wins under their belt to get some momentum going. I don't believe in curses or bad luck, when it's our time then it's our time, I just hope I'm alive to see them win a SB or two.

As far as Belichick goes, I'm kinda torn. I believe he's a cheat, but I also believe he is a genius. Maybe his defense did contribute more in the beginning of the SB runs, but even though Brady had crappy stats during that time there was always 1 constant: He always came through in the clutch!

Lombardi is the best coach of all time cause he was the best motivator of all time, he had the total trust and respect of all his players, plus he had the good fortune of winning the first 2 SB's. Can you imagine if the Chiefs won that first SB, we might be calling it the Stram Trophy.

Brady is a better overall QB than Marino or Elway IMO. Marino was good in the clutch, but only in the regular season. Elway was also, and both could carry a team to an extent, but Brady is one of those special players, like Montana or Unitis, that could shoulder a team and lead them on their own.

Here's another debate: Does the Patriot Dynasty ever get off the ground if the 'Tuck Rule' never happens???

Maybe 'luck' does play into it!

Posted by: monk811 | December 9, 2010 9:30 AM | Report abuse

monk, luck is a HUGE, HUGE part of the pats success...Brady in the 6th, the SECOND of their 2 6th round picks that year.....we need a little luck like that for the redskins...

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | December 9, 2010 9:36 AM | Report abuse

The Benson example is an appropriate one...because I see the Redskins trying to build this team the way the Saints did leading up to their SB run. They had sketchy ownership and mediocre-to-average GM, yet they won a SB because they got a fine HC and a top flight QB. The jury's still out on whether the Skins did the same, but they certainly got guys with a proven track record for success.

Posted by: brownwood26 | December 9, 2010 8:14 AM

I agree with your overall point, but I think the Saints proceeded in a much different manner than the Skins.

Sean Payton came up through the ranks and got his first shot as a head coach with the Saints.

Brees was a 26 year old QB yet to reach his potential when he got the Saints.

The Skins are, and for years have been, obsessed with re-treads.

The Skins like to hire guys who peaked somewhere else, and tend to be on the decline... the Saints dis precisely the opposite.

The vast majority of that Saints team was home-grown. The receivers (Colston, Henderson, Meachem); the RBs (Bush/Thomas); 4/5 of the Oline (the only FA was center Jonathan Goodwin, but he'd been there for about 4-5 years). Same on defense - Sedrick Ellis, Will Smith, Tracy Porter, Roman Harper, etc.

2 of the higher profile guys - Brees and Darren Sharper - were FA pickups, but that team was mostly draft picks.

Conventional wisdom is that you build mostly through the draft, then use FA to add some finishing pieces, and this is what the Saints managed to do.

We've done the opposite. Build through FA and then use the draft to fill in some spots.

And for anyone who cares to admit the truth, this also, so far, looks like the Shanahan plan as well.

Yeah, but luck favors the prepared.

Teams like the Pats - who make a deliberate effort to stockpile draft picks - have a better chance of hitting on some big ones.

i think mcnabb is a place-holder. shanallen wanted an good quarterback who players could trust, who could scramble out of trouble and "make things happen" when crappy blocking necessitated it. i figure he's trying to build a good team around a good quarterback, so that when the young stud "quarterback of the future" comes in he doesn't get killed or become shell-shocked.

Right now, we have between the 9th and 12th Pick.......

Of the 8 teams or so ahead of us who may be looking for a QB are as follows:

*Cincy (If they are tired of palmer, but unlikely)
*Buffalo
*Titans (But they might not want Cam since he is similar to VY, but cam looks to be better than VY)
*PAnthers
*Arizona
*San Fran

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiid.....looks like every team under us may need a QB, save for Detriot.....

He looks like he won't last this far.....to #9-12

A PERSONAL NOTE FROM DAN SNYDER

Dear Friends

People often ask me, "Dan, what is your secret to making millions and millions of dollars each and every year?"

They go on to explain, "Well, because you don't appear to do much yourself, your so-called teams and products are consistently inferior, you seem to waste tons of money on worthless acquisitions, and even your brand name is considered racist and offensive to large numbers of people."

Well, after much soul-searching and deliberation, I have finally decided to let selected friends in on my secrets for success -- and this your very own personal invitation to attend my next seminar on how to can attain and sustain financial wealth and prosperity.

We'll unveil it all at a special presentation scheduled for this Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. in Landover, Maryland.

But you'll want to act quickly to reserve your seats -- which start at a mere $44 each for the “nosebleed” section, and run up into several thousands of dollars for the club level suites adjacent to my own. (Please note -- there will be additional charges for parking, concessions and amenities, etc.)

For more details, visit Stubhub.com and click on the link for "Redskins Tickets."

Looking forward to seeing you, and especially to seeing you spend all your money. In the meantime and as always,

Hail!

They'd better be. I don't think free agency has been the problem...just giving new arrivals contracts that upset/alienate the home grown guys. I do hope that trading picks for players is something Allen/Shanahan are ready to make the exception rather than SOP.. or put in the rear view mirror altogether.

Three reason Auburn's Nick Fairly is not "all that"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cameron Jordon - DT - Cal
Jurell Casey - DT - USC
Stephen Paea - DT - OS

All three of those guys are just as good as Mr. Fairly, if not better. Oregon handled all of them just fine. Even Jordan from Cal. Oregon imposed its will on the Cal defense for the last 9:32 of the game to run out the clock with an 18 play drive that ended when Oregon took a "victory formation" knee inside the Cal 10 yard line.

ESPN media pundits, and a lot of other national media, have already tabbed Nick Fairly as the reason Auburn will stop Oregon's offense. Really? GIGANTIC HUGE MISTAKE. See above.

Auburn will not stop, or even really slow down, Oregon's offense.

Hopefully not. We need top flight linemen. Both OL and DL. Contrary to what a lot of people think on the blog, we don't need to draft only OL and DL. But we need to use our top pick to either grab the best lineman available, or use it to trade back(not a likelihood, but we always need to be open to it).

but seriously folks... it would be GREAT if all the crap albert's done would come out. just to hear vonnie holliday talk about it is unprecedented to me. i've never heard a player "trash" a teammate like that.

someone mentioned needing recordings to prove anything. i don't know if that's legally the case. i don't know what legal standards would apply. seems to me like his refusal to play certain situations is "conduct detrimental to the team". that's pretty much common knowledge, right? as is his loafing during practice (and even games). is loafing during a game detrimental to the team?

For all those harping on the 'skins not being one player away, why the F are you hoping for the highest possible draft position?

The 'skins have multiple needs across the board and their are always studs available in the teens of the draft. Plus the farther from the top the 'skins pick, the farther from the draft the Eagles and Saints pick.

Somewhat agree...we can laud the Saints for their moves now that they've worked, but remember that Brees was coming off a bad injury to his throwing shoulder when he came to the Saints and only had maybe one or two really productive years in SD. That was a much riskier proposition at the time than what we've done to acquire McNabb.

Vilma was also coming off injury and didn't fit the Jets' 3-4, and Sharper's best days were thought to be behind him by the time the Saints got him. Coaching and some very good rolls of the dice got the Saints their title.

It's more about good fortune than anything...you set up your team the best way you can and hope for the best. If the Skins were 8-4 right now nobody's questioning the direction of the team. This way is only wrong if it doesn't work...

I think you're right, TWISI. And I think this will be the big change in strategy from prior FO's. They will not make the big splash, and overpay for the best player in FA. I think they will try to upgrade at each position of need. And this FA class should be much deeper than 2010. So there will be players available that will replace a number of our starters.

Impressive as he's been this year, I think the Skins have to pass on Cam Newton. He's a high risk/high reward proposition at a time when our main need is consistently solid interior players on both sides of the ball.

Newton is clearly an exceptionally gifted and telegenic athlete and who's having a magical year, but the fact that he's hopped around so much and has several unanswered questions about his behavior should raise some red flags in regards to his character and his likelihood to commit to a team over himself. (Sound familiar?)

Wasn't there another Auburn QB that had an undefeated season?

I'm trying to think of his name, but it keeps slipping my mind.

Anyway, the only way to go in the draft is with a center and a guard.

Hopefully trade back for another 2nd rounder or something.

but let's talk about the Bucs.

4thLinoleum, I wouldn't put too much stock in 'Oregon imposing it's will on the Cal defense' for two reasons:

c) College football is rigged

Fairley is a beast, but I'm not really a fan of cheap shot artist (See: Hit on Murray, Aaron). B*tch made moves such as that one brings up legitimate questions about character. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiid.....looks like every team under us may need a QB, save for Detriot.....

He looks like he won't last this far.....to #9-12

Posted by: 4thFloor | December 9, 2010 10:03 AM | Report abuse
__________

I'm not sure all of these teams will really be looking for a QB. Cincy will keep rolling with Palmer, as you have also guessed. Buffalo has found a pretty good one in Fitzpatrick and my guess is they will try to build around him. As far as the Panthers go, I personally have never thought highly of Jimmy Clausen, but I have to think that even though he's been horrible this year, he gets at least another year before they draft his replacement. The whole team is horrible, not just him, and they need lots of other help. I think that we're really left with the Titans, Cardinals, and 49ers as the teams looking for a QB in the 1st round. And frankly, I'm not sure that the 49ers are going to have a worse record than the Skins by the end of the season. 3 of their last 4 are winnable. If Bud Adams with TN hasn't killed over, it looks as though he's going to force VY on the coach. So the one definite is certainly AZ, but I'm not sure any of the others are definitely going after QBs in round 1.

Not sure I even want Cam. He looks great to me as a casual observer, but guys who haven't started very many games and have 1 great year in a spread offense in college have a big history of FAIL in the NFL. Especially ones that have character or maturity questions like he does. Most of the long-term franchise QBs come from pro-style offenses (obivously there is an expcetion or two). The Skins would really have to do their due diligence before making a pick like that.

Posted by: skinsfan713 | December 9, 2010 11:03 AM | Report abuse

The Skins have defintely sucked more over the past few weeks.... I think Landry's pro-bowl voting lead might have shrunk if he was a part of these last few awful games.

Or perhaps they're better when he's playing.

Posted by: wireman65 | December 9, 2010 11:04 AM | Report abuse

LaRon Landry's lead in Pro Bowl voting is healthy despite his injury

Is it too soon to re-up Landry?

And what do you think he'll think he's worth given his interior view of the AH issue?

If AH is worth a $21 million signing bonus as a part of a $48 million dollar deal, what is Landry worth?

The one thing I'd say about Newton is that he's not shown that he "loafs" on the field. In fact when the chips have been down for Auburn this year, Newton has stepped up. His off the field issues are a concern, but his play on the field seems to show he plays the game the right way.

I agree with your analysis on both points, but it sure seems like Bud Adams, judging from his recent press clippings, really wants to shove VY down the throat of the next TN coach, and Bud is off his rocker just enough to do it. I think the old Texas guy in him is really infatuated with VY. So I'm not sure TN is really going to take Cam. So we may have a choice when our turn comes. I would 'trade down' if Newton isn't there. I have seen enough of this kid to fall head over heels for.

He is like the perfect fir for the Shanny Jr Offense. Mobile and Accurate QB with pass 1st instincts, but never scared to run.

He can sit 1 year minimum....up to 2/3 years MAX behind McNabb. And learn to be a professional under him....

Crawford - left
Ellsbury - Center
Drew - Right

Cameron - Bench

That's a heck of an outfield, especially when you can bring a solid defender like Cameron off the bench.

Crawford's and Gonzalez's bats are just what the Sawx needed.

If your pitching holds,.....wow!

LOL in shanahans face! To arrogant bosses everywhere, even you have to play fair. 92 was ready to ply NT? I hope the players union overturns the suspension.

Shanny is a lying cheating prick who didn't want haynesworth from day 1 and has worked hard to devalue him, at the expense of the team and the fans. Guess what, bub? Players are employees and they have rights! Sorry, haters.

I'm sure I'll regret this, but here it goes:
Please stop. You made a bet at the beginning of the season that the skins would not improve. A pretty safe bet based on the last decade, but congrats, you won. You were right, the new crew failed to turn things around in one season. You won that debate. So act like you've been right before. Stop parading around and celebrating every perceived failure as if you ordained it. Quit acting as if any set back to progress somehow validates your intelligence or worth. It doesn't. It just makes you look small, petty and kind of stupid.

Never said I didn't. Just wanted to point out that DURING a game is not necessarily a good time for........wait a minute, you're not taking me down this dive ass rabbit hole again!!! I just think back then those NERDY pep talks worked, now adays the players are motivating themselves more and more now. Think about it, Lombardi's talks back then would be the equivalent to today's Ray Lewis or dumbass Keith Brooking trying to rev up the players in the huddle.

I'm holding out hope that the 'skins can take it one game at a time and put together a streak of four wins, a winning season, and a playoff birth because:

1) it's still possible; and

2) the draft isn't until April. So there is plenty of time to "less filling/taste great" the debate over building through the draft or free angency, qb with first pick or trade down for interior line men or draft a nose tackle, etc.

That debate can start when the 'skins are mathematically eliminated.

Now, having said that, Shanahan is 5-9 in his last three Decembers as head coach. [2008 1-3 including loosing the last three in a row, 2-3 in 2007 and 2-3 in 2006 his last winning season.] He did however go 4-1 in 2005, winning the last four, when his team led by Jake the snake went 13-3 and lost the AFC championship to the Steelers.

So there is precedent for anyone wanting sips for one more week from the punch bowl.

I for one am pleased with the direction of this team.

Still don't understand why people are calling Bruce Smith a "failure", bust, or whatever... dude was one of the more productive free agents signed during the Snyder-era.

I would replace Bruce Smith with Jason Taylor on your list.

BSmith gave the Skins 4 years, with sack totals of 10, 5, 9, and 5. Not great, but that's better than anyone they have right now.

Most of the guys on your list contributed next to nothing.

The 2 MAJOR disappointments are Haynesworth, who gets my vote, and Stubblefield.

Smith was at the end of his career, but still got 29 sacks in 4 years, and Gilbert sucked majorly, but at least the Rams were dumb enough to give us 2 1st round picks for him, that's the only reason he's not #1.

STAMPED....And Sean Gilbert netted us 2 1st round draft picks after one productive season and sitting out a season....

Posted by: 4thFloor | December 9, 2010 12:28 PM | Report abuse

So, if he makes the pro bowl... we can see him fall for the double move and blow coverage there as well :).... to me, having the starters picked by the fans is strictly a popularity contest.... the pro bowl should be for the deserving... that is why I take more stock when the reserves are announced... those are voted in by players and coaches... those spots are earned.
