London Fletcher is defensive player of the year again

For the third consecutive year, veteran inside linebacker London Fletcher was recognized as the Redskins' defensive player of the year Friday during the team's Welcome Home Luncheon.

Fletcher, beginning his 13th season in the league and fourth with Washington, is the Redskins' emotional leader. The durable player had another productive season in leading the Redskins to their third consecutive top-10 finish defensively. He was named to his first Pro Bowl.

"I'm truly proud each and every week when I get to go out there and play for the Washington Redskins," Fletcher said in the ballroom of the Tysons Corner Ritz-Carlton.

Fletcher stirred laughter in the crowd when he thanked Coach Mike Shanahan and General Manager Bruce Allen for giving him a contract extension. Center Casey Rabach and versatile linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, the team's top offensive and special teams players, respectively, were given extensions, so Fletcher decided to have a little fun.

"We'll have to talk," Fletcher said as he looked toward Allen and Shanahan, his face creased by a wide grin.

Fletcher, however, was serious about his outlook for the Redskins' future with Shanahan at the helm. "I'm really looking forward to this year, this great season we're going to have," Fletcher said. "We've got a great coach in Coach Shanahan.

"I think it's going to be great times. We're not going to continue to ride the coat tails ... of past players. We're going to go out and create our own history."

The steady Rabach, who anchored the offensive line during Washington's 4-12 season, was one of only two offensive linemen to start every game. The Redskins were among the league's most inept teams offensively the past two seasons under former coach Jim Zorn, but they will be much improved this season under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, Rabach said.

"I guarantee you next year, there will not be an offensive lineman up here," Rabach said. "We've got so many playmakers this year."

Alexander, who previously played the defensive and offensive lines, still will have a prominent role on special teams despite competing with Andre Carter to start at one outside linebacker spot. Alexander credited special teams coordinator Danny Smith for much of his development and called him "the best special teams coach I've ever been around."

Allen and Shanahan applauded each other's efforts as they try to restore the once-successful team to prominence. Shanahan spoke of the importance of having passion for football and buying into the team's plan.

My main man, Rick "Doc" Walker, was as smooth as always in his role as master of ceremonies. Doc handles himself well in front of a crowd. For a Bruin, anyway.

Tony Wyllie, senior vice president, and Betti-Jo Corriveau, vice president of community and charitable programs, and their staffs deserve credit for another successful event.

So poopy, you are a fan of "The Simpsons" I gather by the 4-5 posts of yours I have seen that directly quote the show. I am just curious, what season did "The Simpsons" jump the shark in your opinion...there is only one right answer.

-----------

Well one could argue that the show was forced to change after the death of Phil Hartman (Huts, McClure, etc.) but if you actually watch some of the more recent episodes a few times they're butt funny.

Not to say there haven't been some stinker-episodes here and there.

Umpire: Okay, let's go over the ground rules. You can't leave first until you chug a beer. Any man scoring has to chug a beer. You have to chug a beer at the top of all odd-numbered innings. Oh, and the fourth inning is the beer inning.

Chief Wiggum: Hey, we know how to play softball.

K, they weren't forced change. I blame Fox and ofcourse whoever began the migration of talent out of The Simpsons (it started in season five and all the quality people had been shifted out by the end of season seven) so by season eight The Simpsons as we knew them were gone. Some the new stuff (past 3 seasons) is OK on average, but it isn't really the same social and cultural humor it once was, now it is more sitcom gag humor.

So yes the answer is during season seven The Simpson's jumped the shark.

While I was reading the post I was thinking "so who was offensive player of the year?" First thought was Hunter the Punter, Zorn was .........

Posted by: wireman65 | August 20, 2010 2:52 PM | Report abuse

The Simpsons answer is less complicated than that. It ruled when Homer was the focal point. When it started with the Bart Star crap (Don't have a cow, man) it was putrid. Then it got awesome with Homer as the main character. Then they started this Simpsons go to Hollywood crap with guest stars and cameos and junk that just got in the way of Homer. Doh!

Posted by: mattsoundworld | August 20, 2010 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Well one could argue they were partly forced to change because Hartman's characters were classic's who appeared in a decent number of episodes. Since than, Hartman's characters (at least Hutz) have been replaced with Gil who is okay.

Oh, and season 8 and 9 have tons of classic episodes. Season 8 has TONS.

And speaking of mid 90's comedic genius, The Muppet Show made a short lived Sunday run that was hysterical, and, of course, News Radio with the aforementioned Phil Hartman was pretty special too. Was much better than watching Seinfeld or Friends, anyway.

Ross Tucker of SI picks the Reskins to win their Division

BNQuinlan @SI_RossTucker -- Every season a previous year's last place team won their division the next year. Who's your pick? Kansas City seems to have the best shot.

I'll take the Redskins. In fact, I am leaning toward picking them to win the NFC East based upon what I saw at training camp and in the first preseason game. They have a legitimate chance with Donovan McNabb and Mike Shanahan.

"Who cares what color Obama is?"

Obama's race seems to matter only to those people who say they are colorblind and believe in merit.

They are also the same ones who now fault the efforts of a man who came from a broken home and went from living on food stamps and the goodness of family to becoming President of the United States.

The suggestion seems to be stay half-black and poor.

Don't come from the slums as proving that America actually works denies the racists whatever points he'd like to make about laziness and shiftless behavior.

Obama was not elected on merit. His credentials couldn't hold a candle to either Clinton or McCain.

Now, was he elected because he was young, campaigned well, was qualified enough, or because he was a good story? Hard to say. But you tell me whether WaPo could have sold commemorative 'Old Hag President' issues if McCain was elected.

Obama was born into a CIA family, and has been preened for this position by Kissinger and the CFR, to do the peace song and dance show as a relief valve from US imperialism, but behind scenes essentially to carryout Bush'e policies (or expanding, as in robobomber attacks and taking rendition to include assassination)...All while maintaining that Joker's grin..

Both Pelosi and Reid betrayed America by not impeaching Bush/Cheney, and are to be hated for it, but Pelosi is right calling the Tea Party "Astroturf", not grassroots, as they are paid rabblerousers and trolls, paid for by Oil companies, War companies, Dick Armey, etc.

Obama winning the election is one of the most important milestones in American history.

Did he have the resume McCain did? No

However it was the perfect time for him to be elected.

Did he receive an overwhelming amount of the black vote? Of course.

Whether he was as qualified as another candidate will be a moot issue in 10-15 years.

He broke a color barrier that many people thought may never be broken, forever changing the makeup of American society.

Seriously?

He was elected because a few weeks before the election the bottom fell out of our economy, and the incumbent party of the Repubs was left holding the bag.

Up until that point the polls showed the race was very close with McCain having an edge in what had been the most important issue on the mind of voters - foreign affairs/war on terror.

Has nothing to do with race, youth, a good story.

Voters did what voters always tend to do.

Vote their pocketbooks.

I know the demographic breakdown, and have no problem with it. White people are the majority and they overwhelmingly chose Obama. Every black person in America could have voted for McCain and Obama would probably still have won.

I do, however, have a problem with electing leaders based on social attaboys. This country is at a cross roads which will have long term repercussions, and I was alarmed that this country was so quick to embrace a single party monopoly.

Thankfully, the Democratic party has split in two between conservative and liberal, effectively moderating itself. And thankfully Obama hasn't rolled out half the crap he campaigned on. So I'm not crying 'The Chinese are coming!' just yet.

But you have to be disturbed by an election so overwhelmingly affected by the media. And that is not Obama's fault, but it is nonetheless his cross to bear.

Why, because he didn't have the extensive experience the other two have?

Credentials are a matter of perspective. Bill Clinton didn't have a fraction of the credentials George HW Bush had in the 1992 election. Did Clinton not get elected on merit either?

Or does this theory arise simply because Obama happened to be a good story outside of merit?

Obama's color has nothing to do with the fact that he's a walking disaster of a President. I don't support him because I strongly disagree with most of his politics, not his race. People who voted against him didn't see a black man - they saw a man who they feared would steer the country down the wrong path, which (in my opinion) has proven true.

Clinton had experience as a political executive being a governor.

Clinton won a plurality against Bush and Ross Perot. Perot took a % of the vote that was going to go to Bush, and there's little doubt that was the reason Bush lost out despite the "read my lips" fiasco, which Team Clinton astutely seized upon.

Because once again...voters tend to vote their pocketbooks.

That includes Obama.

Seahawks given permission to talk to Vincent Jackson
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 20, 2010 5:46 PM ET
The Vincent Jackson stalemate with the San Diego Chargers finally has some movement.

And it could include Jackson moving North.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports confirmed with a Seahawks team spokesman that Seattle has been given permission to talk contract terms with Jackson. According to Coles sources, no significant progress has been made in contract talks since the Seahawks received permission in the past two weeks.

We're a little surprised the Seahawks admit the move publicly, especially after they weren't able to close the deal after flirting with Brandon Marshall earlier in the offseason. Cole reports that the Chargers seem intent on trading Jackson and his deep skills would perfectly fill one of Seattle's biggest needs.

It's unclear what the Chargers want in return for Jackson. Marshall's price -- a pair of second round picks -- would make sense to us.

I'd like us to get VJax, but you don't give up multiple 2nd round picks for him.

He wants premium $$, which is an issue that makes him worth less since there are only 3-4 guys per team that mgmt can pay $8mil+. We've already got TW in that area and McNabb will want $10mil+.

Plus, he's near the end of his contract. Unless he signs a long term deal, he'll be a FA next year -- and it'll cost $$, but no picks, to get him.

SD has to make a call. He can be a major deal down the stretch and in the playoffs -- for very little $$. But then he's gone with nothing in return. Or do they get a #2 pick, but hurt their playoff chances this year?

Albert is a sub-par football player. Shanny, the Col Nathan R. Jessep, needs to order a Code Red.

Players have to be shaking their heads in disbelief wondering if Fat Albert is indeed not committed. Forget letting him lead a proud bunch of guys out of the tunnel. This big tub of goo needs to just be left behind and for no one to give him the time of day anymore until he proves he is committed towards the cause and his teammates...

That said, it looks like it won't happen. Seattle wants him bad and I think they'd be willing to pay more to get him. Looks like we're stuck with what we have.

Here's hoping Devin Thomas makes it all a moot point and becomes our very own version of Vincent Jackson...

Tell him Ross from DC (that's me) recommended you. If he isn't there, ask for Monica. She's always working. If you go, let me know if Rachel and Phoebe still hang out there. You can't miss 'em. They both wear tight pink CC47 jerseys for every game.

You don't.

The Skins will never give him that much, especially with the Haynesworth fiasco and they still need to sign Donovan.

From SI.com on Philly's loss to the Bengals:

"Philadelphia's main goal was to get a touchdown out of its starters. In the preseason opener against Jacksonville, quarterback Kevin Kolb led the Eagles down the field on two possessions, but they had to settle for field goals."

"Same thing again in Cincinnati. Six possessions, two field goals. The Eagles kept their starting offense on the field for the entire first half and got less-than-desired results. Kolb was 11 of 17 for 126 yards, most of them in two drives at the end of the half when the Bengals began substituting. The most glaring disappointment: Philadelphia failed to score against a defense full of reserves after driving to a first-and-goal at the 7-yard line."

"We've got to be better than that,'' Eagles coach Andy Reid said. " You can't have the penalties in the red zone that we did."

"People who voted against him (Obama) didn't see a black man - they saw a man who they feared would steer the country down the wrong path, which (in my opinion) has proven true."

Someone must explain just what path the country is supposed to be on if Obama's is the wrong one.

I mean, check out George Bush's path:

Financial meltdown

Mortgage crisis

Katrina response

Two wars, one against a country that had nothing to do with a terrorist attack

A terrorist attack that was telegraphed well before it happened

The squandering of an inherited budget surplus

Government agencies that ignored scientific data that countermanded narrow hyper-Christian beliefs (i.e., no stem-cell research)

Tax-cuts during a war that caused the national debt to balloon

Interrogation and torture that never led to Bin Laden's capture

And so, the fearful crowd that bangs its gong to alert us all to President Obama's 'wrong path' walk and shout as if the one he inherited was some yellowbrick road of fortune.

When we all know it was a dead end of complete and utter failure.

The conservatives had 8 years under Bush to make their 'philosophies' about government work.

And we all know nothing they said would happen did.

Let Obama do his job without the whining, please.

Or: do us all a favor and take the nearest path to an insane asylum.

I don't get how the 2 year sample of Barry Obama's presidency somehow compares to be just as wrong as George Bush's 8.

The month after Obama was inaugurated, members of the Republican minority stated they would do nothing to assist the President steer the country out of a financial morass, and they sure haven't.

Imagine if, after 9-11, the Democratic minority decided to oppose everything from the Patriot Act to voting to declare war in the Middle East.

Folks would've howled, but the Repubs are doing it to Obama, and getting gangs of people on their side.

Listen: in the face of national calamity, the government either intervenes (1930s Depression) or stands on the sidelines (Katrina) hoping local folks fix things.

The Fall of 2008 witnessed an economic meltdown of historic proportions whose foundation lie in the 8 year application of policy that just didn't live up to the claims of FOX News, the Weekly Standard, and The Wall Street Journal.

So Obama's path is opposite of that which caused said meltdown.

Shouldn't it be?

"Ravens first team offense scores two touchdowns in four series, 'skins first team scores one."

I think the ravens are going to expose the redskin secondary via long passing.

Ray Rice will get some big gains as the skins linebackers look slow and tend to over pursue.

McNabb should put the ball up in the air to the delight of us all.

This might be the game where we start to see the 'two-tight' end approach unwrapped.

I can't see LJ/WParker having a big day rushing against the raven front 7, though.

I think the real game (the starters) will be a passing contest.

They practice it every day at Redskins Park. Running it against the Ravens is no different, except that they show it to Dallas.

The point of preseason is not to try out your offense (see Steve Spurrier). The point is to assess your players and see who you want on your roster and what your depth chart should be.

Shanahan knows what his offense looks like and he knows how to practice for Dallas. If they run two TEs tonight it will be to fool Dallas, not to disclose what they're going to do.

"What's the advantage of running it (two-tight set) against the Ravens?"

One advantage of showcasing the formation is to generate confusion.

Defensive coordinators will get tape on the ravens/jets games, think they have a tendency regarding the two-tight formation, prepare all week, then see K Shanahan run something entirely unexpected out of it.

Plus, there are endless variations you can create interms of personnel usage, packages, and motion: how does offering some of it not allow the players to see and then believe in a new way of redskin offense?

Let's see CC (tight slot) and FD (flexed strong side) to get a glimpse of what might become of the NFC best pass catching tandems.
