Lorenzo Alexander continues to make plays

In his second start at left outside linebacker, Lorenzo Alexander made several key plays to help the Redskins - who twice trailed by 10 points - rally for a 16-13 victory in overtime against the Green Bay Packers.

Alexander was credited with three assisted tackles. On a blitz of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Alexander shared a sack (for a 4 ½-yard loss) with inside linebacker London Fletcher, and he was sound in coverage.

Early in the second quarter, Green Bay ran three plays from Washington's 1-yard line. The Packers tried a quarterback sneak on third down, and Alexander and nose guard Maake Kemoeatu stopped the play for no gain.

With Green Bay leading, 7-0, Packers Coach Mike McCarthy decided to go for the touchdown on fourth down. Third-string tight end Andrew Quarless (Green Bay's first- and second-string tight ends left early because of injuries) ran a route into the right corner of the end zone, but Alexander played tight coverage and the pass bounced off him.

Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett demoted Andre Carter and promoted Alexander because Alexander is a playmaker, and Alexander continued to show that in the Redskins' second consecutive victory.

"Has and [linebackers coach] Lou Spanos, they felt like Zo, when he was in there [as a backup], was making some plays, so he deserved an opportunity to start," Fletcher said. "He's been doing a great job when he's in the ballgame.

"You can see him in special teams, he's running down there making plays. When he's on defense, he's making plays. Whether it's in the regular defense, when we're playing a 3-4, or a sub defense, when he's a down lineman, he makes plays. So he's a playmaker."

Poll on NFL.com right now: Which losing team has the best chance to turn it around?

Vikings 23%
Cowboys 11%
Chargers 38%
Bengals 27%

HAHAHAHA looks like everyone's written off "america's team"

Is there an over/under for Wade Phillips firing yet?

Posted by: Alan4 | October 12, 2010 10:20 AM | Report abuse

Props to Lo, he is a beast. A steady sturdy baller.
Props to Sellers, he tore GB up.
Props to Banks; did anyone else notice that on kick returns, Thomas just ran straight ahead until he hit someone? No moves, no cuts. Anyone else notice Banks doesn't do that?

I don't think Jerry Jones will keep Norv Phillips much longer, but we can hope...

I'm sooo glad that the Pukes didn't hire Shanny!
Despite the few eternal pessimists, he has quickly made a huge difference in taking over a train wrecked franchise. I'd hate to see that happening to the Pukes instead of us.

That Tampax character is particularly dooshy because he checked in to crow when the Pukes beat Houston, just before their bye, to say they were coming back ready to take control of the division. Of course, he's a no-show since 7:30 pm Sunday evening.

And above all, you try to keep the game close and tight knowing that where you see Manning as GOD, the colts see McNabb as Jesus himself.

And with Jesus on our side, we can knock the Devil out of the colts.

Love Zo...dude is what Redskins football is all about.

Rachel, out of that 4 team list you posted, only the Bengals surprise me. I had the Chargers finishing 3rd in that division (they're in 3rd place now, BTW), the Cowpies going 8-8 and the Vikes going 9-7. Since I picked them to go to the Super Bowl, to say that I overrated the Bengals is a massive understatement...

So DT11 was claimed off waivers by a team that was 2nd in the waiver order. Turns out he wasn't so lowly regarded after all.

No matter, Armstrong is stepping up to the plate where DT11 failed so many times before. This does, however, put WR easily in the top 2 needs for this team going into next year (along with NT).

Of course, Banks and/or Austin could surprise by then, lessening that need.

On that note, I would love to see Austin called up to the full roster at some point this season. Get rid of Williams, let Austin get in the mix at WR.

LoZo is starting to look like he can fill another clear void that was thought to be a need at the beginning of the season; OLB. He just has a knack for making a big play. And it's a huge boost to have a guy that can play so many positions on the field. Not just for versatility purposes, but also because the offense never knows what formation or defense you are playing while he's on the field. He could be covering a TE or he could be an interior rusher. The playcaller can't exploit a weakness if he doesn't know where the guy will line up in the first place.

Kareem Moore should spend an hour a day learning how to approach an open-field runner from the FS position. He's too damn good as a playmaker to leave off the field.

Lorenzo, behind O-Rack, is the best of an emerging platoon of DE/LBs for the Skins..Teams fear the sh*t out of our physical defense..

Fer the wrecker, I kinda like them squair honky Mannings or even meatpuppets Reid or Wise.."Let go of thou pissed-offed-ness, you'll live longer", said the Jesus Hippie...

Jason10, I think getting rid of Vinny was addition by subtraction, and is playing as big a role as hiring Shanny.

I am grateful to Jim Zorn for his role in getting Vinny fired... Shanny is now reaping the rewards. Do you think Shanny could get rid of Vinny's draft picks so easily if Vinny was still here?

Jim Zorn was not a great coach, but he definitely helped the team in the long run. Now, it remains to be seen if Shanahan-Allen can do a better job of building a team than Vinny...

NO don't fire Wade Phillips.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 12, 2010 10:27 AM

Don't worry...I've already predicted that Phillips gets canned and replaced with Norv Turner. He'll keep Garret as the OC and bring Ron Rivera as the DC. So lather, rinse, repeat on the Cowpies' struggles...you'll just see Romo play better as they lose...

Can we get rid of Galloway? Has he done ANYTHING?

Posted by: alex35332 | October 12, 2010 10:51 AM | Report abuse

Well Wade Phillips is a dumb coach. He always has that “dumbfounded look” on his face. He doesn’t look like he has control of anything. His team is so undisciplined. How can you have 12 penalties for 133 yards and expect to win a game? They had the bye week to prepare and it’s his job to make sure they’re disciplined and they were so sloppy in that game. They just aren’t a very smart team… a veteran Witten getting flagged for excessive celebrations.? And Jason Garrett is overrated. Why does he continue to throw the ball 40+ times when Felix Jones is averaging 7.3 yards per carry??

If we could somehow fuse Doughty's tackling and Moore's cover skils and hands, we'd have a heck of a free safety.

I'd say Jason Garrett should be fired.

The cowboys should be a run first team.

But they run, then pass, then run, the run, then pass, then pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass...

Vinny Cerrato must be on their payroll.

The thing I like most about the new staff is that they are making decisions based on production and talent. Not, names or salary. That's why we are winning, people are playing their ass of like ZO. In the past it's been about who's making the most $$ plays.

actually, five of galloway's seven receptions have been for first downs. his seven receptions match armstrong's production. and he has been open on deep routes that mcnabb has missed on....

not a galloway fan or hater, just stating the facts.

That possibility doesn't scare me in the least...A) because Cowher wants to bring in his own FO people and have more control over personnel (no chance Jerry steps aside again) and B) it took Cowher 14 years to get a Lombardi in Pittsburgh and literally NO owner not named Rooney would wait that long to get that kind of return on that investment. Cowher goes to the Ginas or the Panthers...nobody else even makes sense.

monk, what's your deal with Galloway? I don't want him starting either but if he's the best we've got to play the other side of Moss then that's what we have to do. I'd understand if he were out there at the expense of someone that can actually play, but he's not. Someone steps up, he goes to the bench. If not, he plays. Simple really...

I don't really have a deal with Galloway. Someone said he has made a couple first downs so I joked around. And when I called ztoichi77 a NERD, it was just a joke. I don't hate Galloway, but I don't feel defenses are afraid of him. And I think AA can emerge as the starter opposite Moss, so if Galloway IS starting, he is taking away a spot from AA. I have no problem with him being our 3rd receiver, and I know he's old, but if he can still go and make plays for us, I say "Run Old Man"!
