M. Williams, Daniel Struggle as Redskins Trail 21-0

The fun thing about the final preseason game is that every play is life-or-death for guys on the bubble. And midway through the second quarter, a single play spelled disaster for two of Washington's bubble guys.

Right tackle Mike Williams got beat by Jacksonville defensive end Quentin Groves, and Groves laid a big hit on Redskins quarterback Chase Daniel. The ball came loose and Jacksonville recovered at the Washington 15-yard line. Three players later, the Jaguars scored their second touchdown of the night - a 10-yard pass from Garrard to receiver Mike Sims-Walker.

So, if you're scoring at home: Williams, who seems to have an inside track as the reserve right tackle, is responsible for a sack, and Daniel, trying to take Colt Brennan's job as the No. 3 quarterback, gave up a costly fumble.

At the half, the Jaguars led the Redskins, 21-0.

Relieving Jason Campbell, Daniel was in the game for three possessions and failed to notch a single first down. (Though he did evade a sack at one point and scrambled past the first-down maker, a play that was negated because receiver Marko Mitchell - another bubble guy - was flagged for an illegal block in the back.) At the half, Daniel was 1-of-3 for 5 yards.

(Might be worth noting here that Daniel & Co. were still facing Jacksonville's first-string defense.)

Quick update on the kicking competition: Shaun Suisham is 0-for-0 in field goal attempts tonight, in a tight battle with Dave Rayner, who's also 0-for-0 at the half.

If you're looking for bright spots: Washington's young corners again struggled - especially Byron Westbrook and Kevin Barnes, it seemed -- but safety Reed Doughty did have a couple of big hits on Garrard, including a big sack and crunching third-down hit. Doughty, however, missed a great opportunity for an interception later in the quarter.

At the half, the Redskins had just 59 yards of offense (to the Jags' 209), which includes just 35 on the ground and 24 in the air. Daniel was their leading rusher; he had 17 yards on the three runs. The Redkins had only three first downs - all in the first quarter - one of which came via penalty.

This beatdown is immaterial. Different players out there.

Posted by: farstriker | September 3, 2009

How do I say this ... uhhh well, WRONG!!! This is the last game, the final audition before the regular season. At the very least the defense (after all the so-called "upgrades") should be doing better than this? The so-called "beast" they needed Brian Orapko is in there. Fletcher who is pushing 34-35 isn't, No Carlos Rogers who last year was 3rd string for awhile. And no AH, but you have to get used to that because HE NEVER plays 16 games.

You have to better than this in your last preseason game Dr. Zorn.

I haven't seen anyone hurt, except DThomas was hurt on a reception. Everyone just left him alone, so either wind knocked out of him or more likely he had all three balls rolled in the dirt.

Injuries? No, the rushing game is not really a factor for J-ville. Its all receiving ... Sims-Walker 4 for 63 and a TD, Willamson 3 for 35, Holt 1 for 31, Lewis 1 for 24.

The pass coverage appears to be non-existent. That means any pass rush will be ineffective.

Periculum, I shouldn't even be saying this, but you're severely wrong in your chastisement of the team. After the first series I believe, we took out ALL of our 1st string players, and the Jags did not. When you have first string guys going against second string guys, I wonder what would happen. Unless your the Pats during their nearly undefeated season, you're going to get smacked. Period. Shutup.

Some didn't even make the trip ...

Looking at the stats I see starters names (remember dude Blache (there are pseudo "starters" in his system) rotates a lot of people in and out using his packages): McIntosh, 2 tackles, Golston 1, Horton 1, Landry 1, Wilson 2, Smoot 2, Orapko 3, Doughty 3.

Peri, peri, peri--dude, it's the last preseason game.

This is NOT a dress rehearsal.

You might want to try watching the game. The pass was perfectly thrown over the under defenders and hit ARE in the hand without him having to slow down. He missed the pass before he ever got hit. You want to complain about JC complain about a play that is bad.

That is good, but the pass D is freaking horrible!

Posted by: dcwun | September 3, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

Let's analyze the comprehensive wisdom periculum offers RI:

"Portis needs to go."

"They will languish on the inactive list while Portis whines about not getting enough carries."

"I think "4-12" is probably going to end up being right."

"given that you can't rely on Portis."

"Watch Zorn lose at least 3 in a row."

"You really need Shawn Springs ... well its better for him he may get to a superbowl. That ain't happening under Daniel M. Snyder GM." (Note: surprising knowing how periculum talks about injuries)

" What has Mason done on 'teams? No Mason."

"4-12. Haynesworth plays in only 4-5 games. Danny sells the team to the Lerners."

"Ooops Dan Turk. My bad. He probably had testicular cancer and didn't do anything about it until it was way too late ..."

"Portis the Tortoise."

"Look who's talking pencil head."

"Here's the fifty cents your mom wouldn't give you kid. Go buy yourself a popsicle."

"Maybe they should draft Bryce Harper to play on the OL."

"When AH sits out 3-5 games, the DB gets torched, and the OL collapses and gets blamed for not getting Portis past Riggins ..."

"You will know that this was *NOT* a good offseason for Vinny"

"Re-upping Pete Kendall would likely also help."

"When he gets rid of "chums" like Cerrato and releases Portis"

"Hopefully AH will play in as many games and be as effective as Springs was."

This only in like a 36 hour span and he's taking his medication..! It could be worse, watch his clever and aggressive response.

Cork, you've been replaced..this is what periculum sounds like and looks like, only a little more obese.

Enough with the feel good story of the year...Williams loses 100 lbs...stick a slug in Old Yeller and let's scan the waiver wires from some competent help on at tackle. Cheers

Daniel's final drive of the game was a thing of beauty for the rookie! Perfectly thrown pass to Eloi deep, then he threw one touchdown pass over the middle (despite his height) to Yoder for a TD, and then threw a well placed ball to Mitchell for a TD on 4th and goal with 57 seconds left in the game after the first TD was reviewed and taken away since Yoder didn't "maintain possession of the ball."

Daniel haters, check the numbers; both of their stats from NFL.com paint the picture:

Brennan: 23/43 (53.5%),249 yds, 1 TD, 3 int, ran 6 times for 13 yds, QB rating of 49.5.

Daniel: 14/24 (58.3%), 143 yds, 3 TD, 0 int, ran 4 times for 39 yds, QB rating of 115.1!
