Malcolm Kelly misses practice, court date

Updated 12:07 p.m.

Malcolm Kelly was not at practice Thursday. Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Kelly had to deal with a personal matter and, like tight end Fred Davis, Kelly had a court date Wednesday to answer to traffic charges.

According to court records, Kelly did not show up for that date, which involved three misdemeanor traffic charges in Fairfax County.

When asked, Shanahan would not say whether Kelly's absence from practice Thursday was linked to the outstanding charges.

Cited for erratic lane change in Herndon on July 7, Kelly faced a $200 fine that was past due, according to court records. He also was cited for not having a driver's license during that same traffic stop.

Kelly also had to answer to a charge from a previous traffic stop. In April, he was cited for failing to obey a highway sign. He didn't show up for a May 13 hearing on that charge. During that same stop, he was cited for driving with a suspended or revoked license, which was settled nolle prosequi, which means charges will not be pursued at this time.

Kelly's driving record in Northern Virginia is far from stellar. In the past 18 months alone, he's been cited twice for failure to obey highway signs, twice for speeding and once for driving with a tinted or smoked windshield, according to Loudon County records.

Kelly is the third Redskin to generate news related to traffic offenses in the past 24 hours, joining Fred Davis and Trent Williams.

Shanahan was asked following Thursday's practice how he deals with traffic offenses and said: "You handle it a certain way. You sit down with players and talk about being responsible, that they represent this organization, and you expect them to handle themselves in a professional way....

"You sit down with them, especially young guys that make mistakes, and sometimes older guys that make mistakes, but that's part of the process. Once you represent this organization, you want them to represent it in the right way."

Malcolm Kelly misses practice for court date

Judge Moe Brown: You been impersonatin' an NFL receiver abit too long.

You do you have to say 'bout your sorry self?

Malcolm Kelly (begins to speak, then suddenly stops)

Bailiff (stopping to examine Kelly as he chokes while trying to answer the judge's questions):

You're honor, he would speak to defend himself.

But it looks like he pulled the muscle that makes his tongue work.

Glad they went to the bowling alley and not to the go kart track.

How come he missed so many court dates, wasn't like he was busy practicing, or playing for that matter.

I think instead of taking a break from training camp to go bowling, Shanahan should have taken the players on a field trip to the area DMVs.

"Kelly is the third Redskin to generate news related to traffic offenses in the past 24 hours, joining Fred Davis and Trent Williams."

Seriously? He "generated news?" That might be the stupidest thing I've read in months. Here's how I'd say that.

"I don't know or care anything about football and have probably gotten a speeding ticket or two in my life, however under the guise of being a sports reporter and despite the obvious hypocrisy involved, I'll spend three minutes checking public records online, write about what I find there, and then claim with a straight face that it's "news generated" by someone else.

Dude, you are beyond pathetic. Enough of this nonsense already. Go learn about defenses or something.

Virginia lays down the law.....

This is very very VERY minor on all 3, save for Sleepy trying to give the Police the Okie Doke on the wrong name....but he was prob just scared to get in trouble with Shanny......

Tired of reading bad news about this guy. He might just be fated to fail. Remember Taylor Jacobs was also drafted really high.

He probably doesn't need to show up at the court dates as long as his attorney is there, but still, the fact that he has court dates in the first place is a problem. Something tells me he'll have PLENTY of time to get into trouble in about three weeks......when he's out of a job!

He obviously doesn't want to be seen........ can you blame him?

Posted by: vegasskinsfan | August 19, 2010 1:08 PM | Report abuse

where there is smoke, there is fire, he lacks the dedication/commitment to even go to court after numerous offenses that just don't go away if you ignore them. Especially in VA. It shows his lack of respect for the process and the law. CUT HIM NOW and move on to people who want to be on the field and not a menace to society. it's a character trait that relates to what type of person he is. Can't make the club from the tub or cellblock six.....

I sure hope I get cut as many breaks as these knuckleheads get from the court system if I ever get a citation. Let's see, how to handle a court citation? Just ignore it, keep driving with a revoked license, drive like an idiot with a pimped out car, drive 90 mph on the most heavily policed road in northern virginia...I'm beginning to understand why they have to keep the playbook simple.

He was on his way up the stairs to the courthouse and pulled a hammy and hurt his knee, otherwise he would have made it.

Can't wait until Shanahan starts making cuts.. I see a WR right here that needs to go...

Is their anyone on the Redskin's who actually has a drivers license? Or is it a team requirement that you must get yours suspended to make the team?
