Marshall exploits secondary as Broncos take lead

Trouble in the secondary cost the Redskins dearly in the opening quarter against the Broncos.

Just a few days after strong safety Chris Horton was placed on season-ending injured reserve list, Kyle Orton and the Broncos exploited Washington's defensive backs on two big plays to take an early 14-7 lead.

Brandon Marshall scored both scores - a 40-yarder and a 75-yarder - and both times Redskins' safeties were nowhere to be found.

To start the game, the Broncos needed just four plays and two minutes before striking first, when Orton hooked up with Marshall on third-and-11. Cornerback Carlos Rogers was spun around on the coverage and had no safety help, which enabled Marshall to turn it into a 40-yard touchdown.

But the Redskins answered with a good drive. The play-calling offered a welcome mix of runs and quick passes. A 17-yard run by Rock Cartwright - his longest since 2005 - and a 24-yard pass to Fred Davis put the Redskins on the 5-yard line.

After an incompletion to Devin Thomas and a short Ladell Betts run, Jason Campbell hit Todd Yoder for a two-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-apiece.

On the ensuing kickoff, Shaun Suisham knocked the ball out of bounds, and Denver began its drive on the 40. They crossed into Redskins' territory but Correll Buckhalter was stripped of the ball by Lorenzo Alexander. Safety Reed Doughty recovered, but the offense couldn't do much with the bonus possession.

Denver took the next punt and needed just one play on its second scoring drive. Orton hit a wide-open Marshall again, this time for a 75-yard touchdown. It was DeAngelo Hall on Marshall this time and again the Redskins had no safety help. Fred Smoot was the free safety on the play and bit on a tight end crossing pattern while LaRon Landry, playing strong safety was chasing another receiver, giving Marshall more than enough room to operate.

Orton finished the opening quarter 4-for-4 passing for 124 yards and two touchdowns (he had a 158.3 passer rating). Campbell was 6-of-12 for 75 yards.

The Redskins are without Clinton Portis, but Betts and Cartwright combined for 42 yards on nine carries in the first quarter.

Nice, JC picks up where he left off last drive.

let's not give Zorn a pass! This offense looks better under Lewis with better use of PERSONNEL.

Posted by: rickyroge | November 15, 2009 1:41 PM

Guys have been open all year. The ball does not get to them. A weak QB makes an O and coaches look weak. Vinny still blows though.

JC needs to be benched.

Yeah...

I would go with Collins in the second half especially with the Oline playing well.

D. Hall out there b*tching because Zorn didn't review his non interception?

I would bench that guy now and have him out of the locker room by the start of the second half. What a moron and prima donna - what a waste of money.

no he wasn't they even showed the replay, and said it out loud, saying "the safety landry runs up on the underneath route and marshall just runs free" are you guys even watching the same game?

Posted by: zjfr2 | November 15, 2009 1:49 PM | Report abuse

If that's what the TV announcers said, so be it. I was listening to the radio and they were talking about how Landry wasn't playing the usual free safety position on that play. Doc Walker said they need Landry's speed at free safety...not playing the run.

By no means am I giving Cerrato a pass, but my NUMBER ONE frustration with Zorn was hearing every week why DAVIS, KELLY, and THOMAS couldn't get on the field. Also, Zorn never used BETTS as a change of pace RB

We still stink, but we look like an NFL Offense...with a SEC caliber QB

Posted by: rickyroge | November 15, 2009 1:57 PM | Report abuse

Yes the secondary looks bad but there is no pass rush whatsoever. Orton is just sitting there waiting for the receivers to get open.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 15, 2009 1:59 PM | Report abuse

The reason the Skins have a topped ranked secondary is because the running games against the Skins have been so successful.. You run first and then you throw if 3rd and long. Skins havent put alot of teams into a 3rd and long situation.

I've defended him but in this case Vinnie and Dan knew what they were doing. He's not a franchise QB!!

He also missed Yoder for a guaranteed six.

Posted by: kman2 | November 15, 2009 2:12 PM | Report abuse

This is the problem with the Skins...

Offense puts points up...defense gives up two bombs and cannot get off the field on 3rd down.

Posted by: rickyroge | November 15, 2009 2:12 PM | Report abuse

Skins play the size of the Contract (Snyder's directive).. So, you dont see these backup players until the starters are injured.

Conversely, Teams like the Patriots and Giants play the best player from each week's practice prior to the game. Its how they uncover great players and/or develop them.

fan-o-matic, it looked like a typical fg formation. then they shifted out into shotgun maybe? hunter smith and 2-3 receivers rolled right and most of the defense was keyed on that. then he threw all the way across the field to the left and sellers was wide open at the 5 yard line. brilliant call danny smith!

It's not the secondary it is the pass rush. No one is getting near Orton. He is sitting back there like it is an 11 on 11 drill in training camp.

It was clearly suggested by Mike Wise in a recent article ("Vinny's Guys")... Vinny does what Snyder tells him...Snyder pulls all the strings..and determines who Starts...
Otherwise do you really think all the draft picks of 2008 should still be on the team? Only Horton should of made the team that year...
Another one of many examples..Do you think Marko should be sitting behind Thomas or Kelly? . Nope.. Its the size of Thomas' and Kelly's Contract (and draft position) that keeps them on the team and/or starting over Marko.

This game hasn't ben pretty, but it sure has been entertaining. Per my usual comments trade Portis for draft picks, trade Carlos Rogers for draft picks, keep Campbell for QB depth next year but look to draft linemen and maybe a QB. Fill in other positions (CB, LB,RB through free agency.)
