Mason Gets His Chance to Play

After finally earning his way onto the Redskins' roster after three preseasons with the team, running back Marcus Mason got his first NFL carries Sunday.

A fan favorite who led the Redskins in rushing in the preseason, Mason (Georgetown Prep) carried the ball on consecutive plays early in the second quarter, rushing for three and two yards to move the Redskins to the Rams' 24 yard line. He finished with three carries for five yards.

"I got a little nervous," Mason said. "But after the first carry, I was okay. It was everything I expected. Just very, very exciting."

Mason was on the New York Jets' active roster for six games last season but did not see any action. He was inactive for the Redskins' season-opening loss last week at the New York Giants.

GUYS,

I can't stop....... This is unbelieavable that this team wants to crap on SOUPS. He's never going to be Brady, Peyton or soon to be Matt Ryan! Get over it. We need players to make plays.
1. Devin Thomas - Catch the football ( 6 points )
2. Sellers - Cathch the football ( 6 points )
3. Orakpo - The Refs will call that every time
4. Moss - Don't fumble the football
5. Landry - stop trying to knock people out, you are not #21, He was 6'3" 225, you are 5'10" 200 ( if you are lucky ) wrap up and tackle, you can be great!!

Peaceful, don't be a moron. ZORN is the problem... he is hamstringing the entire offense with his 1st and Goal series playcalling. Its simply atrocious. I can't actually find the words to accurately describe how bad his inside the redzone calling is.

Campbell played very well today. He is NOT the problem. He was hurt by two of his receivers DROPPING sure TD passes, DT and Caveman. ARE was being held in the endzone and therefore Campbell correctly threw the ball away high...and then the azzhat refs said it was too high. It was past 5 yds contact, and/or Defensive holding, take your pick.

I hear a lot about how Zorn's play calling is terrible...does everyone seem to forget how much worse our offensive playcalling was with gibbs 2.0 and saunders...i mean, i know we suck, but we are heading in a much better direction than we were with the failure of joe gibbs second tenure.

If JC was/is so great why doesn't he audible out of the terrible play calling some of you state? I still think Zorn is not confident in "his" QB. JC always moves the ball, from the 20yard line to the 20 yard line. He did have some drops today, but that's what an average team does. They are old and getting older in critical spots. JC never looks off a defender, he locks in like a robot.

No, but JC the "great" could audible to a fake hand-off and QB scramble to the opposite side, and run it in or toss it to the TE peeling off his block. Just saying JC isn't without options if the play calling is terrible. Truth is JC and Zorn are mediocre at best.

4th and 1 was not designed to go outside... it was supposed to be up the gut but they got pressure and he went wasy left.....in fact, look at Peterson, or even Fred Jackson cut back against the grain... That is where CP has lost it.

IF ANY OF YOU CLAIM TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE QB POSITION IN THE NFL THEN YOU SHOULD STOP CRITICIZING JASON!! Now back to a more important topic like this past April's draft where Vinny Dumbass failed to draft some young O-lineman and now with the season ending injury to Randy Thomas comes back to haunt this team and trust me there will be more injuries because as we all know the NFL season is a war of attrition and you as a GM you have to expect these type of situations but not Mr.Know It All(Cerrato) i'm not sure Wil Montgomery can fill Randy's shoes the Skins need to get on the waiver wire and fast.

CLEGG

Posted by: michael_b_clegg | September 20, 2009 6:41 PM | Report abuse

Campbell's lack of an NFL quick release handicaps him in the Red Zone.. When LBs and DBs are compressed, you need to have the ability to run at least 2 progressions and find a very small amount of separation in half the time you have outside the Red Zone.

Campbell doesnt have the 2nd Read progression skills (he locks in on the primary at the snap...see the tape(s)) or quick release.

Rams were a gimme win.. They are "Skins verson 2008" with a new Head Coach.. Without Thomas and with more OLine attrition, its going to be a long season. And Vinny had sooooo many chances during the preseason waiver wire cuts to pick up some NFL level OLine guys..

Wouldnt it be a surprise if the WASH POST writers listed all the waivered Starting OLine players the Skins ignored at the end of preseason. Experienced players who could've stepped in for Thomas.. But it wont happen, they're too afraid of Dan and his media empire.
Print is dying and Dan controls, tv and radio.

Well I hate to say it, but I personally doubt a rookie would be able to fill in for Thomas better than most people from the waiver wire, unless we had used our first round pick on a guard, of which i think there were none available for good value.

Moss is getting old, CP has lost a step, Samuels, Thomas, and Rabach older to old.... where is the good young talent? The young WR's can't run the routes or catch the ball and where is sleepy Davis? I thought he'd be a faster version of Cooley. If Cooley could run, he'd be all-world.

Just thought I would remind everyone that they won, are 1-1 and one game out of the division lead. Yes the playcalling reeks and they can't finish drives but they won. I am sure NE, GB, and PHIL would have been happy for a 9-7 win. Anyone who says they would rather see them look better and lose is a poor fan. Sure they could lose next week and end up 1-15 but until they do I plan to stand behind them. I was a fan during the George Allen days, he would have loved this game, except he would have thought the Redskins threw too many times. passes

Can we all please get along.... This is silly. We played a pretty good game. Last time I say this, "Players either make or don't make plays"

Today we were bad with making plays. 3 of the 4 big plays were with young KIDS.
1. Devin Thomas drops a TD ( not jason's fautlt)
2. Orakpo Personal Fould on the fumble recovery ( Not Jason or Zorn's fault )
3. Sellers drops a TD pass ( not Jason or Zorns fault)
4. It's your fault!

OK, be nice in Hawaii! Everyone is nice there. :)

My point is that the play calling is based on the coaches confidence in their QB. I agree with SkinsneedaGM about JC's slow release and that is why he moves the ball easily from the 20-to the 20 yard line. Cutler's TD pass to tie the game against the Steelers was to a very well covered WR, but he threw it quickly and accurately.

65,

A grip is recognizing when the QB's release is not the problem. It has nothing to do with his RedZone offense.

He played a good game today. I roasted him last week when his "pumps" and "releases" where problems. Not today. It's easy to blame the QB, but not today. You jumped on that bandwagon and deserved to be called for it. I'm sure you are smart guy in life, but just not on this blog today.

Sigh ...

Clearly the defense is fine, and will be fine. There are some issues but can be ameliorated with a good coach like Blache.

Bottom line: there is no offensive line. That is a flaw that will continue to play havoc with any offense I don't care who calls or runs the plays. The best best for this team was and still is a conservative west coast offense who's bread and butter play is short passes.

It the Ravens. The team appears to be modeled very much like recent Ravens teams.

Redskins still suck and can’t score points, so what is really the issue? Coach does not trust JC it seems and I understand why... He sucks and cannot make big plays down the field because he holds onto the ball too long ( balls were dropped but O-well). And the coach, well he sucks also and calls stupid plays. Also the wide outs are below average and cannot get open more often against a horrible teams (Well JC sucks so can’t blame them). So when will the stupid owner hire a real GM with a head coach with his own coaching staff and not be involved in football personnel / operations? Not in my lifetime it seems. So why don’t fans just boycott buying merchandise or going to games until the owner wakes up, I did like 6 years ago…The other local team, the Ravens have a well run organization and are much more competitive than the skins…

Sorry for my rant, but the skins suck even though a win…Hell rookie or 2nd year QB’s make better plays than JC has ever had his career….

Note to dargregmag: Have the Redskins been competitive in the last decade? LOL wake up did JC throw a TD, hell he almost got a tackled for a safety against, what??? A horrible team LOL? Keep drinking Snyder cool aid kid, buy a JC jersey, I only own a D.Green authentic….Hall of Famer sorry kid maybe I only like greatness not average. Sorry you never saw the skins when they were great.

Watch the Ravens game…..then you can see a QB that has potential

Zorn sees the film too.. JC locks on the primary outside the 20 or inside the 20.. All the football analysts say the same about him.. Slow release, no progression (ie. no second read).
Soooo, Zorn decides rather than get intercepted inside the 20, he will be conservative with JC and probably end up with a FG.

Exactly Salinas. I can tell you, the 6 or 7 strong contingent of Redskins fans at the Sports Bar I was in were irritated en masse with the play calling. Loudly irritated, LOL.

I 100% disagree...... Yes, he is slower in his progressions than many QBs. He still completes over 62% of his passes.

1. We had the 3rd most dropped balls in the NFL and he was a Top 10 passer. FACT!

2. TODAY, he threw 2 TD passes that were dropped, FACT!

3. Last week, he was scared and looked it, but still did not choose to run on 1st and 2nd downs yet throw on 3rd.

I'm not a "Johnny Come Lately", I do know football. So cut the "rhetoric" about Zorn and Campbell. Both have their faults, but I choose to support them.

Sellers is a great blocker not at catching the ball as seen in what...the past 3 years? Why not throw to someone who can or is made to catch the ball in the red zone?

"careful dude.. last time JC went out with an injury, 17 months ago, the Skins..... ummm they went 4-0 to the playoffs.."

They had an offensive line and a backup quarterback that was more like an assistant coach in the Offensive Coordinator's intricate offensive scheme. They had a running attack.

Collins would eventually get killed too. This would more like Spurrier's last year where the 3rd string quarterback ended up playing and not looking at all like his brother in Seattle.

You guys just don't get it... "Soups" throws to a covered WR, yet gets killed for it... Throws it to a RB, who by the way just signed an extension and is a professional, but he drops it? That is JC's fault? Really? How does this nonsense even keep happneing on this blog?

JZ is not a good coach. The Skins O has no fire. Whatever you think of JC he's not a fired up kind of guy, which I think this team needs. Even witout the drops we beat perhaps the worse team in the league by 17-7. We have no red zone "O".
Here's what needs to happen; bench Moss, CP and any othet "vet" you can find and put in the youth-This team is not going to the playoffs so lets see what we have. Then draft accordingly. And find out who coaches this mess next year.

look RI elite,

I am all for building a team and patience, etc. But Zorn doesn't seem to think there is anything wrong with his play-calling. How can you build and improve when you have no idea what your weaknesses are?

I mean are there any routes where the receiver runs away from the defender to a planned spot and the QB throws to that spot? Is it possible that if your RB is consistently gaining 2 yards, that you have to call something different?

Wow, the team is 1-1 and they should go ahead and give up. So does that mean all of the 1-1 and 0-2 teams should give up? No, I guess they shouldn't give up because they looked good losing. Do you think Tenn would have traded looking good scoring 31 points to win 9-7? I am by no means an expert but I thought the point was to win. Unlike some people it wouldn't bother me if they won 9-7 all season. Don't get me wrong the team has problems but until they are mathmatically eliminated I expect the team to make every effort to win every game, not play for next year.

Zorn is into his 2nd season as a playcaller yet I expect the world, or at least more than he has been able to learn thus far. I'm not an apologist cL, I'm just as frustrated as everyone else, but I think he is improving. He's just not there yet. First, I'm glad we won.

Haynesworth came to play today and was a beast.
Cooley earned his money today, and so did L.Fletcher.
JC played a pretty good game, but his slow release and indecision still kills, but overall he did a good job. His deep throws are running the reciever out of bounds instead of down the sideline so they can run under it. The first play of the game, his throw was too late, Kelly was open and if the pass was sooner could have gone all the way.

DT and M.Sellers need to catch the ball, those were TDs.

I always thought the shortest distance between 2 points was straight ahead, the sweep JZ called when it was 4th and less than a yard was the epitome of stupidity along w/most of his red zone play calling, just horrible!!
Throw a dam fade to M.Mitchell or M.Kelly!!

Get ready for another nail biting edge of your seat game next week against the lowly Detroit Lions who are winless from last season.

Most of the emphasis in the offseason was on the D, and now look R.Thomas is out for the year(that didn't surprise anyone did it, a true warrior but now its time for Mr.Thomas to retire). The Danny and his butt buddy Vinny sure know how to build a team from the inside out don't they?

our offense was horrendous, anybody on here excited about a win against the Rams by 2 without scoring a TD is a moron. That was a disgusting play-calling game capped off by stupid decision to go for it on 4th down at the 20 and then again at the 3. Against the Rams we get away with that, against good teams giving them the ball with 2 minutes and needing just a field goal is idiotic. To top it all off, when you need less than a yard a slow developing stretch play is a crappy call. JC isn't good, but Zorn is the biggest problem with this team, put them together and you have a 6 win team. I'm making the prediction now, the Lions beat us next week.

Posted by: zjfr2 | September 20, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

The only problem with trying to win 9-7 all year is that not many teams are going to help you out by only managing to score 7 points, no matter how well your defense plays. The reason so many of us are NOT HAPPY with the play calling is we know this team has enough talent to score TDs if the coach would make use of the talent.

As soon as ARE made that GREAT play on the GREAT JC pass to get 1st and goal at the 8, I turned to a fellow Redskin fan at the SB and said "watch here comes two runs that get stuffed, another lame 3rd down play and a field goal". Too bad I couldn't get down on that bet, easy money.

My unofficial count has at least 5 1st and goals in the first two games that have gone run, run, some other "interesting" play that fails, followed by a field goal.

If Zorn has tried to condition the rest of the D Coordinators in the League that we run wide inside the 10 on first and goal, congrats, he has done so magnificently. Play action with somebody dragging across the field the other way should be wide open. But what I really would love to see is him throw 3 jump balls to any combo of MK12, DT11, and Marko Mitchell. Heck, line all 3 of them up and run a draw on 1st down...would work better than the damn sweeps.

And if I'm the WR coach, I request JC throw 25 of these balls everyday after practice to my group and If I'm Blache, I get my CBs covering hard for all 25 balls. Then i hope hope that Zorn calls those plays on Sunday by osmosis. They can't mutiny, but they can all lead from below.

Watched NFL Red Zone all day...Knew a lot of the faithful would be calling for Zorn's head. I admit, I'm baffled as to why he sticks to complete predictability and then attempts to balance things with bone-headed trick plays. ( although the fake FG last week was sweet ).

I'd love to see Marko turned loose ( F Politics ) and let Mason have more touches as well. CP is a bit slower, but who wouldn't be after years with our O line.

Hopefully Zorn will learn from this. I'm not on the firing bus just yet--the guy is likable and smart, but as today proved yet again-he has a lot to learn.

The only positives, special teams was solid and the front 7 on D played well. Everywhere else was poor to piss poor. If you're happy with that TE good for you, I'm not. And if they play like that again next week, they'll lose. I watched that Detroit game today, they'll played MN tough most of the way till AP went off and blitzed the crap out of Favre. We don't have the same quality of line that MN does, we don't have the secondary that can handle Calvin Johnson, and we don't have AP. It took a Moss punt return to beat them last year and its going to be tougher this year, they look better and we look the same, so no I'm not a Dallas fan and I'm also completely not excited about a 2 point win against the Rams.

I am not excited that they only won by 2 points but I am certainly glad. Does that make me a dimwit instead of a moron. By the way I guess the fans of the 14 soon to be 16 teams that lose this weekend will be happy if they played well. I guess they will revell in the moral victory.

Bar none one the dumbest things you've said on here...and that's saying something.

Only the Redskins can make you feel bad about a win...count on a loss to Detroit next week. On the road, against a team desperate for a win and that has some pretty nice weapons on offense. Right now with Zorn calling plays, Detroit could line up 11 kindergarden kids and still hold the Skins to 10 points. If Zorn lasts the season, I'll be friggin' shocked.

Don't you all remember how surprised and concerned we were when the Redskins hired Zorn as O.C. with no prior experience, and then a few weeks later made him head coach.

No offensive lineman drafted?
We still can't sack the opponents QB.

All problems lead to Vinny.

yep.. just like those who point at JC's overall completion average, never mention that half are worthless completions.. For example last week's Giants game..
5 completions in the last 90 seconds when the Gints left the middle open and wanted the short completions to run out the clock and 4 earlier completions that were short of the first down marker. Thats actually more than half of his completions for that game. Yet, JC apologists would say he had almost as many completions as Eli.

Just watched the locker room interviews, and Sonny told Zorn that if he was the QB, he'd have called timeout when Zorn called that halfback option play (rather than run the play)... They went back and forth about it a little, and it wasn't as chilly as last week's locker room exchange, but it wasn't warm either.

I think cl is right: Sonny knows that Zorn is a sham.

Mista I like all those things... JC played great, D was great, CBs walked up a little closer which was a concern last week.

again, MY only beef is the 1st and goal series play calling over the first two games. Its not just one series, its all of them.

Lets suppose you absolutely HAVE to call a half back pass. Why not on first down?? Second, You think any D coord in the league doesn't teach to watch for Cooley releasing from the SS on a right sweep? Half back pass... its just stupid and ugly.

"We had a chance to hit that down there". Great Jim. Uhhhh, did your young WR forget how to jump and catch once you get inside the 10?

We have yet to see play action, fade, or fade route draw on 1st and goal. We have an inordinate amount of sweep left for no gain though.

But we can't blame everything on him this week...if Caveman and D.Thomas catch those passes..Campbell has 2 td's.

Just Win, Baby.

Offense improved markedly from last week. Red Zone is a fixable problem. Zorn concerns me, JC concerns me, Portis concerns me, Reinhart concerns me, but the fiesta trio is starting to come around, the oline in general protected well, and Cooley is a solid pro.
Defense got the ball out several times, Bulger is going to be in the jacuzzi until Tuesday, and Jackson was contained except for one play (that's on you, Laron). Even Tryon did ok.
This is a team that needs to get better, but if they take a couple of crappy wins against crappy teams... well, just win, baby.

Really and how many wins did they get with all those points. The Redskins offense was anemic last year but the team still managed 8 wins. I thought the point of football was to win games not score a lot of points in blow out games. Anyhow the Redskins can't be this year's Lions they already have one win.

I respect your opinion Moe and everything you said was true, it's not like we haven't seen this movie. Lack of production from the offense has plagued us for years. We have offensive weapons we don't use, we have a QB who has the physical tools to play this game, but lacks "it". We moved the ball well offensively between the 20's, but our offense has no resemblance to any other NFL team. This may be an unfair comparison, but I saw Phillip Rivers throw the ball into double coverage on a seam route without hesitation. I watched Trent Edwards last Monday night leave it all on the field. I watched Rivers throw a first down out of his own end zone. I'm not a coach but what's frustrating is that our problems are the same throughout coaching eras, both Gibbs and Zorn.

When was the last time we beat the crap out of a team on both sides of the ball? A win is a win but that's friggin' loser talk when you barely escape losing to a bad team.

I would be able to chill even if we had a new problem like turnovers, special teams, etc. but we haven't been able to score points AT ALL!

Campbell has been here since 05 and the Skins have been to the playoffs twice in that period.
JC never played a role in either appearance. And actually was leading the Skins to an 0-5 losing streak in 07 until injured and Collins went 4-0 to the playoffs, with the same exact personnel (Oline and WRs).
I think if JC had ever had to compete for his job, he would be a much improved NFL QB. The worst thing the Skins did for his development was to anoint him with the starting QB job because of the investment.

I also saw Rivers throw two critical INTs that hurt SD. Some teams feel more confident about overcoming mistakes then others. I guess the Redskins are not one of them. JC did attempt to throw out of the endzone, it was one of the few times protection was bad and he almost got sacked for a safety that would have tied the game.

JC definitely had a good game today; but like everyone else on offense, I think he was crippled by Zorn's ineptitude.

I have to admit I was wrong last week: JC is not the problem, the head coach is.

The lack of scoring has to be a result of his version of the WCO. When did he ever run the WCO before? Not as a player, and not in Seattle where he was QB coach, not OC.

It's frustrating because I watch a lot of NFL games each week, and when I see teams like Tampa Bay (who are obviously rebuilding, and yes, 0-2 so far) still manage to put up more points every week than the Redskin do, it can only be because of the Zorn playbook.

I think the guy's in way over his head. And perhaps the 6-2 start last year was only because at first opposing teams couldn't believe he was running such an easily defensible system that they were caught completely off-guard?

I think when Sonny said what he did about refusing to run Zorn's play (the HB option) if HE was the QB, he was telegraphing to everyone that this Zorn character is a fraud.

Oh, well, perhaps if the defense stays tough we can still get to 9-7 or 10-6.

I haven't given up just yet. And no one else should either.

All this talk of JC "locking on his primary receiver" is a lie.

His eyes were all over the field on the pre-snap. And after.

If that were the case, half the balls Cooley got wouldnt have been thrown.

I am so sick of these lack of football knowledge liars on this blog.
These dummies play Madden and think they know about audible calls..LOL

JC and ELI had nearly identical stats last week, just like they have over their entire career.

ELI had 6'5 Plaxico until this year.
AN O-line that had been together, the same 5 players for 3 years.
Eli was called "too passive, not fiery enough, not a leader", they wanted Tom Couglin FIRED...then he won a Super Bowl.

I pray and hope JC has a great season, leaves the team, and RUINS the Danny and the Skins for the rest of his career.

You fans and the owner you love so much deserve it.

How can it be Zorns fault when we had nearly the exact same problems under Gibbs?

Penalties, lack of scoring, etc.
Through two different coaches??

I think has more to do with what Portis said last year:

"I love Mr. Snyder, and Mr. Snyder loves me, I am gonna be here no matter what"

For crying out loud, they only hired ZOrn as HC after NOONE wanted the job, because this idiot organization hired the OC before the HC.

The problems with this team start at the TOP and go all the way down.

Its well known through out the league you come to Wash to get paid, period.
You want to win? You go to good places like Steelers, Pats, Giants..
Same as under Gibbs.

Anyone think that the Seahawks are a good team this year?

Here is the reason I ask: STL travels to both Seattle and DC.

Offense: Seattle scores 28, Redskins score 9.

Defense: Seattle gives up zero, Redskins give up 7, and more yards.

So tell me again about how the Redskins are a top 5 defense, and how great AH etc. are? I guess that makes Seattle a top 4 defense? How about that 'average' offense - they only scored 1/4 of the points as the Seahawks. They suck.

The koolaid is laced with cyanide at this point, esp. with the first of several oline injuries. Depressing

After the game, Kelli Johnson asked JC why he didn't throw the fade pass to Kelly...His response was telling. He said "it's comin'"

peace..
Zorn has been with JC 20 months, now. And Zorn was considered in the top 5 of QB Coaches when Dan hired him. Wouldnt you think if he thought JC could execute those plays, he would call them?? Zorn has to start JC because of the what the team has invested in him.. But, Zorn doesnt have to make stupid play calls that JC is incapable of completing. Zorn knows JC's limitations by now.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Zorn,

listen: you went for an entire game and scored 9 points, so why not try something a little different next week.

plan to have a series where you send a couple of receivers DEEP and take some chances. I am not talking about trying ONE deep pass and then giving to to Portis if it fails. just go in there and tell JC to throw deep on 6-9 consecutive plays. What are you afraid of three-and-out? you have done worse, interception? you have done worse

I think that Portis has a potential to be a toxic influence on the team. This statement says it all:

"I love Mr. Snyder, and Mr. Snyder loves me, I am gonna be here no matter what"

In a nutshell that's one of the major problems with the Redskins. Last year Snyder allowed Portis to openly attack Zorn, undermining the coach's authority. How can a coach control a team if the owner is going to allow players to openly undermine him out in the public media?

Zorn has made plenty of mistakes but Snyder is responsible for making it harder for the coach to do his job. How can a coach control a team if the owner is going to let players openly undermine him at every possible opportunity?

Frankly Snyder's response should have been to tell Portis that Zorn is the coach and that he supports Zorn's decisions. Otherwise the players have no reason to respect or listen to Zorn because they know that Snyder will have their back.

Yeah. And let's also be honest. Porits is a great back but he is past the halfwayp point of his career. Frankly I'm probably in the minority but I would have traded him away in the offseason. The problem is that, if he becomes unhappy later in the season, should Portis go on the radio and/or TV to trash Zorn without any consequences, it's going to create a toxic environment in the locker room. And Zorn is not going to be able to control the team.

Sndyer should know better. You can't have a coach's authority undermined in public and still expect the team to respect him.

I asked why he thought fans should boo; "because they wanted to," Smoot said. "You can't control them, you can just control what we did on the field."

And many others on the team sort of shrugged off the question, saying it doesn't really matter to them what fans decide to do.

"I don't pay attention to that stuff," Mike Sellers said. "It's not gonna make us lose the game. It's on us."

"Hey, fans gonna be fans, you know?" DeAngelo Hall said of the boos. "They love you when you're up, they have their opinions when you're down. But we've still got great fans, man. We've got to give them something to be happy about. I'm happy we got a win. We could have played a hell of a lot better though."

Snyderatto fails at life.
--------------------------------------------

Actually Sndyeratto hasn't "failed", at least not the Snyder part. Before he bought the team he was a very successful marketing executive. From a financial perspective, after the Dallas Cowboys, the Redskins are a very profitable franchise. It's the second most profitable team, only falling behind DAL when the new stadium in TX opened. The team is extremely profitable.,

I don't want to believe this; but part of me thinks that, as long as the team remains one of the most profitable franchises in the NFL, he could care less if they win or lose. It doesn't matter to him because he will still make a great deal of money since the stadium will sell out even if the team went 0-16.

I don't think that Snyder will change unless/until ticket sales fall, games start being blacked out, appearances in 4 PM games stop, bookings on S/MNF stop, and team loses money. But as the season ticket waiting list is extensive that's not likely to happen.

"The skins don't attack inside the red zone."

Again: going back to Gibbs, the redskins never attack the end zone from 30-40 yards out.

The closer the team gets to the end zone, the more it tries to run.

The result: a lot of long field goals.

Fix this and the points will come.

No, he isn't hitting the market anyway if the uncapped year hits and if it doesn't who cares, there wasn't a team in the league that wanted him this offseason, wait and see how the year goes first, if this offense continues on this way let him go if it starts clicking though and he has a solid year (3500 yards, 20 TDs, less than 12 INTs) then yes. But 5 years is enough.....another mediocre year and the experiment should be over...

I have to disagree with the comment that Snyder could care less if the team loses as long as it makes money. I think Snyder desperately wants to win as long as he is part of the process. Whether or not this will ever occur is debatable. Unfortunately the FO has had more failures then successes in its decisions. Unless this changes (either with existing or new team)the Redskins will never be consistently successful on the field. Give Snyder his due, he may not always spend wisely but he does spend money. If it was all about the money, he would never have allowed Gibbs to have all those expensive coaches and sign expensive FAs. Instead the team would be at the minimum salary level.

If Snyder wants to win, Rickyroge, you would think that he would realize that doing the same thing over and over again amounts to insanity. Then again, if we look at our counterparts in Dallas, as they haven't won a playoff game since 1996 (I think that the Redskins have won a playoff game since then), Jerry Jones doesn't realize it either.

I think that Sndyer can accept losses, provided that the team remains extremely profitable. Otherwise, if Snyder truly wanted to win, you'd think that he'd learn some from some of his past mistakes. The only lesson that I think Sndyer has learned is that he's not as prone to meddle with coaching decisions as before. But I do think that he needs to hire a good General Manager and give Vinny Cerrato his walking papers. But that's not going to happen unless the Redskins put in a 2-14 season.

jiacinto... Snyder wants to win a Lombardi Trophy so bad he can taste it. Desire for winning is NOT the problem. I actually think he has improved as an owner. He has learned to be somewhat patient and try to to build a team. His problem is that he plays in the strongest division in football, has a fan base that refuses to accept anything other than playoffs for starters, and his team has never been bad enough to completely blow up. And when it came close to being that... he pulled the trigger too quickly on changing the program especially in the Schottenheimer era.

He hit a home run with the Gibbs 2.0 hire, and then realized it Just Wasn't The Same and was stuck with St Joe. NO WAY he can run Joe, who also realized he was done and had the good sense and decency to let Danny off the hook.

So here we are with the Zorn master. Lots of promising talent, that is so far performing just good enough to be really, really frustrating.

I'm thinking that Zorn figures it out and stops running edge plays from first and goal and lets his QB and young WR make some damn plays for him in the Redzone.

Its all I can do... otherwise he gets run and it gets not so much blown up, but shifted and repackaged enough that there is no hope for a deep playoff run.

Which is all we, and Danny, want.

Manningham is the guy we would have if not for a bad moment with the wicked weed.
Loved to watch him at Michigan, should've let Zorn (who gives the hemp-laden vibe anyway) work with him.
Or would they have snuck off to the RV in the back of the lot to light up?
And would that have damaged the development of the offense in any noticeable way?

Gibbs 2.0 reached the playoffs twice..
++++++++++++
t's true that scoring wasn't electric under Gibbs 2.0 either. However, the Redskins DID run the ball well under Gibbs 2.0

Under Zorn, not only is the passing game only good between the 20s, they're not running the ball well at all, going back to the last half of the '08 season and through the first two games of this season.

SkinsfaninKaneohe--You might have a point. That is also one of the Redskins' problems that perhaps prevents massive change from happening. The team has been routinely in the chase for a Wildcard spot most of the recent few years. The team has put in mediocre middling results, but hasn't fallen or sunk to the 0-16, 1-15, 2-14, 3-13, 4-12, 5-11 levels that teams like the Browns, Bengals, Lions, Texans, and other teams endured. I think that, although I know it would be dumb to actually have this happen, the Redskins would sometimes be better off with a 2-1 season one year just so that Snyder can finally hit bottom and start over. My reasoning is that the Caps had to undergo several years of horrible seasons in the middle of the 2000s but emerged as a contender after rebuilding.

But I've always th toughthat the Redskins have had the talent to be up at the level of the Giants, Steelers, Patriots, and other contenders. The talent to win has always been there. The problem is that the team just seems to find ways to lose games through penalties, turnovers, stupid mistakes. Indeed, if we look at the 2008, they were in most of the games that they lost. The last real blowout that the Skins endured was the 52-7 defeat at the Patriots in the 2007 season.

Right now the Redskins are probably at best an 8-8, but I blame mismanagement and poor draft selection for it. I blame an owner who allows players to undermine the coach. I also blame an organization that, for whatever reason, just can't get its act together.

I don't think I was bad mouthing him.

I truly respect Joe Gibbs but I think the problem with Gibbs 2.0 is that he was too involved in the player personnel aspects. I think he relied too much on veteran players and did not value draft picks. This worked fine before FA and salary caps when you could keep aging vets like Grimm and Jacoby as backups but undermined the ability to develop the team for the long term. Look at what happened to the Redskins right after the last SB, the whole team seemed to get too old at the same time.

Off last year, I'm glad the 'SKINS played well enough to win, but I'm surely not pleased that we did not dominate a clearly inferior team. Too dammed many penalties and turnovers kept St. LOUIS in the game.

MONTGOMERY drew one penalty, but looked as good today as he did during the x-season. And he played out of position at RG. I knew THOMAS was done. I believe he will call it a career. SAMUELS is next, but his departure is not imminant by any means.

Still, we need two o-line draftees in the second and fourth rounds next year. You do not want to see RINEHART filling in for THOMAS or MONTGOMERY either. I believe ED WILLIAMS should play before RINEHART despite his badd-azz chin whiskers.

Still should pick CB #1 in 2010. If we can do something about CAMPBELL during the off-season in FA so be it. Otherwise, keep him through 2010 then draft a #1 QB.

Did you see the route DEVIN THOMAS ran down the sidline when he made the out-of-bounds catch? Too close to the side-line, and smothered by the DB. Why didn't he run a little more inside the side-line so he could fade out a bit and stay in-bounds while making the catch? The announcers laid it on CAMPBELL, but I think JASON would have put it in bounds if there had been any room to manouver.

I gotta' believe MARKO MITCHELL would have run a correct route and made the catch in-bounds. He is a smart receiver. THOMAS's route-running looks as dumb as owl-shyt. Oh hell, I'm just pyssed that he didn't make the catch in-bounds. Anyway, we won. No need for recriminations. I'll let the coaches do that.

still cant believe LB Henson's quote about Redskins fans working at McDonalds... given Snyders recent bad PR from reselling tickets sued from life-long fans..

Perhaps the most animated player was backup linebacker Robert Henson, who took to Twitter to repeatedly criticize the home crowd, saying he had never been booed at home like that before, and that his friends on the Rams were also surprised.

"All you fake half hearted Skins fan can .. I won't go there but I dislike you very strongly, don't come to Fed Ex to boo dim wits!!" he wrote, among many other jabs. "The question is who are you to say you know what's best for the team and you work 9 to 5 at Mcdonalds," he wrote later.

Zorn is 9-9 as a head coach, give him some slack. He has room to improve as a play-caller and clock manager but he will get beter if given the chance. lifelong, chill out.

I actually meant it as somewhat of a compliment.

Like, you know, the "No Name Defense".

Jeez, lighten up. The 'skins ugly win was a few hours ago, and Dallas just got FACED in their precious new stadium on their opening night.

Three INTs from DAL are the difference in this game. Take away the points that the NYG got off of those turnovers and DAL wins.

Another stellar night by Tony "Turnover"!

Don't care the Giants were able to get the turnovers.

Giants were the benefactors of some crazy lucky/fluky plays. But I don't care.

It's all in the game.

EAT, SUCK and DEAL with it, Cowboys fans.

lmao

Evidently people in Wales, UK are even more crazy than people in FL
-------------------------------------------
Tesco has been accused of religious discrimination after the company ordered the founder of a Jedi religion to remove his hood or leave a branch of the supermarket in north Wales.

Daniel Jones, founder of the religion inspired by the Star Wars films, says he was humiliated and victimised for his beliefs following the incident at a Tesco store in Bangor.

The 23-year-old, who founded the International Church of Jediism, which has 500,000 followers worldwide, was told the hood flouted store rules.

But the grocery empire struck back, claiming that the three best known Jedi Knights in the Star Wars movies – Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker – all appeared in public without their hoods. Jones, from Holyhead, who is known by the Jedi name Morda Hehol, said his religion dictated that he should wear the hood in public places and is considering legal action against the chain.

"It states in our Jedi doctrination that I can wear headwear. It just covers the back of my head," he said.

"You have a choice of wearing headwear in your home or at work but you have to wear a cover for your head when you are in public."

He said he'd gone to the store to buy something to eat during his lunch break when staff approached him and ordered him to the checkout where they explained he would have to remove the offending hood or leave the store.

"They said: 'Take it off', and I said: 'No, its part of my religion. It's part of my religious right.' I gave them a Jedi church business card.

"They weren't listening to me and were rude. They had three people around me. It was intimidating." Jones, who has made an official complaint to Tesco, is considering a boycott of the store and is seeking legal advice.

Tesco said: "He hasn't been banned. Jedis are very welcome to shop in our stores although we would ask them to remove their hoods.

"Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Luke Skywalker all appeared hoodless without ever going over to the Dark Side and we are only aware of the Emperor as one who never removed his hood.

"If Jedi walk around our stores with their hoods on, they'll miss lots of special offers."

Eli manning was actually complaining about the gina's not scoring touchdowns in the redzone, and they scored 30 plus points....this is the mindset of a winner.

Sorry, didn't know your context, just wanted to point out that they weren't undrafted FAs. But you are right the way they are talked about in the absence of Plexico makes you think they are a bunch of nobodys.

So once again the ginas are off to an early lead in the division. Their defense looked suspect tonight though...Dallas' defense too. Only if we had some offense, we could actually compete for the division, our defense is not the greatest but after watching these two teams it reminds me how difficult it is for opponents to score on our defense.

Good to see the idiots are out in full force today. 23/35, 242 yards, 8 different receivers hit, drives of 13, 14, 9, 13, and 15 plays, four full-field drives led inside the 10 yard line, and 2 dropped TD passes on 4 red zone attempts, but the problem with this offense is Jason Campbell.

Yep. The idiots are out in full force.

Just saw the game. Wow. Is Zorn fired yet?

2-point, scratch-it-out win over the Lambs? Totally impotent offense? And he really looked like a deer in the headlights when caught on camera.

Radical change in (coaching) leadership is needed. This just won't go anywhere against more legitimate teams.

And boy is D Hall overpaid. And why did Carlos Rogers give Steve Jackson a 10+ yard cushion on a 3rd and four? Nutty.

Posted by: chasgiffen | September 21, 2009 12:32 AM | Report abuse

A couple of observations:

We need to get Orakpo on the D line where he belongs. This nonsense of having him chase TE's around in coverage just doesn't make sense.

Campbell does take too long to deliver the ball. Manning, Romo and Bulger all get the ball out WAY faster than Soup. Not good.

We need to practice the friggen fade rout this week with Kelly and Mitchel. Throw the DAMM route already.

I never see us try to throw to the back shoulder to covered receivers. Especially on long balls. Need to work on that. everybody is doing it (except us apparently). It a pretty exciting play.

Why don't we throw to the back out of the backfield more? Can Portis catch? Apparently not very well, that's kind of limiting.

Fred Davis should get more time at fullback.

I hate to say it, but the Redskins are not going anywhere this season because of this offense.

I was really optimistic after the preseason, but this is getting ridiculous. 19 points scored by the offense in the last 8 quarters (throw out Hunter Smith's slow motion TD run). That's less than 10 points a game, folks.

I predict that the Redskins lose to the Lions next week, giving Detroit its first win since 2007. Remember, you heard it here first.

See you at the game.

The Cowboys lost that game because of Romo's horrible interceptions.

Try comparing how the Cowboys O.L. did against the Giants D to how ours did.

You can't.

Zorn made two nice adjustments from last week, but still has an enormous way to go, and remains a terrible play caller and game planner. Stretch play in the Red Zone? Awful.

1. Unlike last week almost every running play had a lead blocker, usually Sellers, tho I saw one play where they pulled both guards. Never saw it again, that I recall.

2. Zorn made an effort to get Moss open. He slotted him, put him in motion, put him in trips. He still wasn't very effective. Is my mind slipping, or didn't Moss work hard off season bulking up in the weight room? He may be stronger, but I wonder if it has slowed him down.

On defense, I'm still very concerned with Hall who got beat by a tall receiver on a fade route for a TD, and whose coverage and tackling was better, but less than brilliant.

Biggest positive surprise to me was linebacker play. Fletcher is playing at an all Pro Level, but so did Rocky Mac today. Too bad the two fumbles didn't stand up for him. Orakpo, looked better than last week in coverage, and Horton PLAYED like an LB, crushing some people...

I feel the very reason this offense is not working out is that the Redskins do not have the personel to run the West Coast offense. I still believe JC has it, just needs to learn this offense more and with better play calling and better weapons. Zorn can only do so much, he needs the weapons to make it go. Moss and Portis are showing their ages. All of the other players we posess comes from Gibbs 2.0, and are not suitable for a West Coast style. We not only need better players, but players that are consistent game in and game out in this offense. Regardless of what idiotic Cerrato thought, D. Thomas is not working out. We were better off drafting DeSean Jackson. So what if he's only 5'10? At least he's a potential Pro Bowler to Thomas' brick hands. Jackson is also thriving in the WC offense. Boy was the 2008 draft a big pile of crap other than Horton. Draft better talent, and hit FA and waiver wire. Pick the guys suitable for this system and drop the dead weight that was Gibbs 2.0

Is it just me, or does PRED48 drop down to SS backer on passing 3rd's when Orakpo goes to RDE?

Brilliant!

Great we won. Yay.

Umm, we are gonna need to score inside the 10 at some point this year if we want to keep winning... as we don't get to play the Rams the next 14 games.

And Henson??? I'd run him outta town faster than Zorn wanted to call that moronic timeout while the clock was still ticking.

You're so eager to attend a funeral that you're willing to bury them before they're dead, Brownwood.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | September 20, 2009 8:43 PM

If someone is on their deathbead with a life-threatening illness, it's pretty safe to start planning the funeral, no?

I've seen this movie and I already know the ending...they did this last year against Detroit and Cleveland and actually lost to this horrible Rams team at home. They screw around and let bad teams hang around, usually enough times to beat them in the end. There's no logical reason why they can get 17 points against the Giants D and yet can't get in the end zone against a mediocre Rams D. And just wait until they crap the bed against Detroit next week...the blog will be on fire!

Fire on the blog? Wow, won't that be something. You and the other pyromaniacs who are trying to turn a 9-7 win into a loss will be back again? Ooh, at least I can look forward to that.

Okay. I'll wait. But you're so afraid they'll win that you want to start pizzing on them now.

Today we are 1-1. We have the same record as Philly, Dallas, New England, San Diego and -- your fave -- Pittsburgh. We won yesterday and they lost. We're winners; they're losers. And, unless Detroit can pull off a miracle, we're gonna be 2-1 next Monday, regardless of your fervent hopes that we will lose again.

Sorry if I don't get a boner over a 9-7 win against the worst team in the league like you do. You may lovingly eat any crap sandwich served to you by the burgundy and gold, but I expect this band of overpayed professionals to bring their A-game against ALL comers, not just the division opponents and elite teams. Dogging it for 60 mins and settling for 3 pointers in the red zone is inexcusable.

And I would hardly call Detroit beating us a "miracle". A miracle would be the Redskins scoring 30 points in a game.

Lions 12
Redskins 5

The Lions matchup well against Skins... and no danger in this being nationally televised.
